Re: Industry Veteran Peter Molyneux Warns The Indie Craze "Won't Last"

@WiiULoveGBA

I think the comparison to punk was dead on. Originally that style of music represented rebellion, a new attitude, doing things your own way on a small budget, not mainstream, etc. Sounds just like the current indie game scene.

Then punk began to change in the late 80's early 90's where punk bands were signed by major music labels, their sound changed, marketing and recording budgets went up, and their music became more 'manufactured' by the label who owned them.

That's just what Peter was warning would happen to indie developers if they were bought up by EA, Ubisoft, etc.

If you dig around, you can still find a few 'non mainstream' punk bands recording their own stuff, but the vast majority of what kids today consider punk is stuff that's just as mass produced and sterile as current pop music.

Huh? I fail to understand why the author thinks this was a 'doom and gloom' statement.

It's not as if Molyneux was criticizing indie games or their developers. He was just saying that a lot of these studios are going to likely be bought up by other companies. Is that an 'incendiary' statement? It sounds completely plausible and rational to me. Oculus Rift was just sold to Facebook for gods sake!

He then goes on to say how he prefers working for himself, and gives reasons why, if he was an indie developer currently, he wouldn't 'sell out' to a bigger company. It all makes sense and doesn't sound negative at all, so why did the author try to spin it that way?

I also had to lol @ this sentence "It's an incendiary quote from a man known for incendiary quotes". A thesaurus could have been helpful there!

"Wii U launch sales were stronger than PS4 sales in Japan"

PS4 surpassed the Wii-U's first week sales LOL.

"The Wii U didn't sell as poorly as the PS4 during its first launch weeks in Japan."

The Wii-U launched in the busy holiday season where everyone is buying consoles for themselves and as gifts. PS4 launched end of February LOL. Not really all that surprising that the Wii-U sold more units at Christmas LOL.

"The PlayStation 4 has dropped off in sales from launch week, while the Wii U continues to hold steady week over week."

The PS4 is experiencing shortages everywhere, so naturally that would affect it's abilty to sell more units LOL. The Wii-U is holding steady selling 7-9,000 units a week LOL. That is horribly embarassing LOL.

"Good luck with your prediction that it will surpass Wii U by April-May when it's already trailing behind. It might ONE day***, but it's going to take a while."

PS4 WILL surpass Wii-U LOL. It's inevitable LOL. It's surpassed it everywhere else already LOL. You are clinging to this "Japan sales" thing when it doesn't matter LOL. PS4 has sold more consoles worldwide in 3 months than the 14 month old Wii-U LOL. And without the benefit of being available for two holiday seasons, like the Wii-U was LOL.

***You were supposed to emphasize the "MIGHT" not the "ONE" LOL.

@dumedum

Not upset LOL.

Just wanted to point out how ridiculous your assertion is that the 'PS4 has failed in Japan' LOL.

You are bragging that a system that launched at the end of February 2014 hasn't sold as many units in Japan as a system that launched in December 2012 LOL.

You are incapable of having an intelligent debate LOL.

PS4 will obviously catch up to and surpass the Wii-U in Japan LOL.

When it does I will return to this post and let you know LOL.

See ya around LOL.

Re: 3DS Faces a Renewed Vita Challenge in Japan as Home Consoles Underperform

@dumedum

Ya, because PS4 is sold out in Japan. LOL.

Also, PS4 has only been out in Japan for a few weeks, so I don't know why you are comparing it to the sales total of the Wii-U that has been out for 14 months. LOL.

PS4 will have outsold the Wii-U in Japan by April/May, and the Wii-U will never catch up the PS4's worldwide sales totals after that LOL.

Re: Soapbox: Ignoring The Objectification Of Women In Games Won't Make the Problem Go Away

MikeLove

@Ryno

Ya, because none of those problems affect young males either, right?

Plenty of males have eating disorders, body image issues, obsessions with working out and low self esteem based on their bodies as well. Lets not pretend these issues are exclusive to women.

For every game that "objectifies" women, there are ten that objectify men as hyper aggressive, musclebound meatheads, yet there are no special interest groups whining about that.

What America do you live in?! Religious beliefs, especially Christianity/Catholicism, are mocked or criticized on a daily basis in films, televisions shows and news programming in the US.

And the US media doesn't support sex/nudity?! The US produces and consumes more pornography than any other country on earth combined!

People have the choice to watch it or buy it, it's not like its banned and doesn't exist. Same should go for games. If there is a market for it, it should be made available. Just because it contains religious subject matter that some people find offensive, doesn't mean that the game shouldn't be allowed to exist.

@Yorumi

I have played games where I drive cars through crowds of people, make drug deals, beat up women, shoot up innocent people at airports, ect. I don't really care, nor do I take it seriously or get offended by it. If I don't like it, I don't play it or watch it. It's that simple. If your hypothetical 'racist' and 'homophobic' games had cool graphics and made interesting use of the gamepad, I would probably play them too!

My view is 'let anyone play and enjoy what they want' while yours is 'what people play and enjoy should conform to my personal beliefs'.

When you bring up the phrase 'common human decency' while talking about vidya game content, it's a sign you are taking things too seriously.
