"You say Gamecube had more 3rd party support but it was all garbage. It really was."
Oh for gods sake...
The Rogue Squadron series, Splinter Cell, Time Splitters, Tony Hawk, Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil, tons of excellent sports games, etc. There were dozens upon dozens of good to excellent third party titles across all genres on the GameCube.
Now I must decide whether to sell one of my physical copies of the free games, or hang on to them and sell the digital download code instead....decisions, decisions.....
Comics aren't 'cannon' though. There have been all sorts of alternative storylines, deaths, rebirths, reboots, etc, for most every character. It's not like Spider Man has one cohesive storyline throughout his existence.
It has nothing to do with EA either. It's Disney that made this call because they are making a new trilogy and want to follow their own timeline, not a bunch of books and comics that have come out since 1983.
And one of your sources, lai.com, is a company (which I've never heard of) which appears to have had minimal (none?) success providing translating services for games. Therefore, they have a bias to present a rose tinted outlook when talking about the global game market, as they are trying to get companies to hire them.
Most of the information they source has nothing to do with video games either, and is just makes references to demographic changes and potential market growth in Asia. It makes no mention of the fact that China has pretty much banned all console game companies (so far) and is a hot bed for piracy either.
Read your articles, and they all pertain to mobile/MMO PC gaming. They have nothing at all to do with console gaming, which is what we are talking about here, and they also lean heavily on 'potential' market increases.
As of now, looking at the sales figures for current consoles, the biggest numbers are coming from North America.
Nintendo has been making 99% of their income since 1980 on video games, or licenced products pertaining to their video game properties, and haven't relied on cards, board games, or toys as a significant portion of their revenue stream for decades. You say 'Nintendo', and people think 'video games', nothing else.
Microsoft is known for many things. PCs, Xbox, software, phones, etc. Sony is known for films, personal electronics, games, music, etc.
Again, whether or not Nintendo made playing cards in the 1900's or plastic toys in the 1960's is irrelevant, all they are known for now is video games, and it will be hard for people to take them seriously if they extend their product line into things outside that realm. They have been out of that game too long, and it may be too risky to try and branch out into those other ventures again.
I've seen you mention that Panasonic CEO 'quote' more than a dozen times before in support of your argument that marketing/hype isn't a good thing.
Can you even find a link where that quote is proven to exist? If the CEO 'always said' that, you should be able to easily find a written example of it, right? I've googled it before, and came up empty handed.
PS4 became the fastest selling console (ever?) on the back of hype and strong marketing. It most definitely works.
The Wii-U had neither hype nor marketing, and look how it is doing so far...
So again, please, where is that Panasonic CEO quote?
Translation: "I have no evidence to support my belief, so I'm going to insult the guys who were right and go watch footy on TV and pretend this never happened."
It's also a pacific island, and was added as a humorous way to discredit your notion that more consoles/software are sold in a region where 50% of its inhabitants are likely subsistence farmers.
Again, any numbers to back up your belief? Because a simple google search for 'Wii sales by region' or 'PS3/360 sales by region' immediately shows that USA/North America makes up well over half of global sales on it own.
Could you provide me the 7th generation console sales numbers for Guam, Myanmar, Vietnam, Brunei and Indonesia please? I'm fascinated by your assertion that this region is the largest gaming market (ignoring the fact you are comparing the sales from a single country, USA, to an entire geographic region encompassing half the earth) and haven't produced any evidence to support it.
I think he is trying to imply that China could potentially become the largest market, while ignoring the fact that currently, yes, the US is the largest market for video gaming. All it takes is a simple look at console/software sales numbers to show this to be true.
You think it took Nintendo 9 months to make 6 new courses for Mario Golf (most of which are remakes of N64 ones) and 4 new characters!? And that the game was delayed to produce it??
Come on...nobody can be that dense!
Golf games (and all sports games usually) are traditionally released during the seasons they are played. This was supposed to be out last summer and evidently wasn't ready in time. Then Nintendo delayed it until the following spring, when people play golf. They weren't going to put out a golf game in the winter!
During this delay, its likely the team went back and kept busy for a couple months by producing a handful of new holes for the game which would then be added as DLC upon it's release.
You and everyone else complaining about "day one DLC" keep ignoring the fact that the main game was in all likelyhood finished several months ago, but was delayed until after the winter in a completed state. Some of this time was used by the developers to make new courses and characters that were not going to make the cut in the original game had it been released when it was supposed to, and were instead added as DLC.
It's not something to get angry about, nor is it a conspiracy by Nintendo to eventually jack up the cost of a Mario game to $90....
With Mario Tennis single player, you are only playing against the computer, but with Mario Golf you are playing against yourself, and honing your skills each round. I find Mario Golf a much more satisfying experience because of that.
I played Mario Tennis Open for about 6hrs total before I got bored of it and sold it, yet I've played Mario Golf 64 for hundreds of hours since it was released in 1999 and am still hooked.
"Why doesn't my pizza come with 15 toppings?!! They already have all the ingredients in the back! They should put them all on for free and not charge me extra!"
Iwata was referring to "holding back" content from the main game and releasing it as DLC, not delaying the release of the initial game...
I'm the first guy to criticize Nintendo when it comes to bad decisions (overpriced VC releases) but this one is perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned.
The game still has just as many playable characters and courses (if not more) than any other game in the series, and at least in North America, it is launching at a price that is cheaper than many other first party 3DS releases.
So already you are getting more for less.
Then give the hardcore Mario Golf fans the option to almost double the amount of playable holes for only another $15? That's a great deal.
I'm glad they are releasing the DLC within a month or so of the games release so those of us who would want it sooner can get it, instead of just sitting on it until Sept-Nov just to artificially delay it.
You are rustled. Your lengthy and emotional reply proves it.
A 4.5% increase in sales at this point is nothing to celebrate, and is basically meaningless. You can bet your bacon that nobody in the Nintendo corporate offices are pleased with that number either, so enjoy your solitary optimism!
"the Wii U seems to have turned a corner on it's image somewhat, and in a month with no big releases, it's done 4.5% better then last year. Quick! Someone find a reason to crap all over that little ray of hope!"
You are celebrating a negligible one digit increase in sales percentages for the month compared to the previous year? Really?? And consider said negligible increase as a sign that the Wii-U has 'turned a corner'??
With the amount of quality titles on the system now compared to this time last year, a meager 4.5% increase in sales couldn't be considered anything less than a total disaster.
Ya....this game would be a huge hit in North America if it was all spoken in Japanese, while all the regional and cultural jokes and references thoughout the game (which would only be enjoyable and understandable for a Japanese citizen) would be subtitled in english using literal translations.
I don't even think that guy read the article beyond the headline. Here is the breakdown...
"Among those who bought the system, 74 percent said they bought it for games and DVD movies, 20 percent for games alone, and six percent for DVD movies only. In actuality, however, 52 percent of the participants who own the PlayStation2 said they are currently using the system for games, and 15 percent said they're using it for DVD movies"
It says only 6% of those polled bought the system just to use it as a DVD player. Nowhere does it say that 60% of PS2 owners did that.
But can you move you character around and stuff, or is it like you feed them or give them an item, and then just sit back and watch them walk around and do things?
If you care about Mario Golf so much that you already preordered it (which I have done as well), why would you not be interested in getting to try out the demo a month and a half before it releases?
No one is holding a gun to your head and telling you that you must purchase an extra course or track for Mario Golf/MK8 several months after they release. Its totally optional, and you can enjoy the game with or without it!
The last COD game I owned had several DLC releases, I didn't buy a single one, yet still got hundreds of hours of fun out of it playing online and didn't feel 'ripped off' at all.

Exactly. IGN has its fair share of "Nintendorks" working for them now, and even lost a couple last year who now work for Nintendo!
IGN is no worse than any other gaming site when it comes to Nintendo, and are actually probably one of the more fair ones.
