I just noticed this thread being all crazy and had to look through it. Interesting stuff. Couple thoughts:
-Video games are basically toys (look in your heart, you know it to be true) so they tend to undergo lots of changes to improve marketability. I personally dont like changes being made to classic content, but likewise a first time player isnt going to know (and they wont care either).
-Censorship (and I hesitate to really call it that, but...) isn't that bad. At least in video games it isn't. Seriously. They changed a stage background. WHO CARES. I feel like decrying censorship is just a way to avoid sounding like a child.
I think a parallel of a game thats been announced yet years away from release would be movies that are "green lit" but take years to produce (or get cancelled or languish in developmental hell). The difference is gaming culture fixates on that initial announcement, as there's usually few to no updates afterwords. If Nintendo (for instance) had quietly announced Bayonetta 3 is being made, then followed it up with progress updates, then dropped a big juicy trailer when it was close to being released I think the response would be different. The game still might be crap, but that's just how it goes when you consume media.
But instead game companies need you to be excited because when they announce the game they want you to drop whatever it is your doing and make a preorder or buy a console (or both). Maybe the fact that they stand to benefit financially from early announcements is part of the issue.
Until there's evidence supporting his claim I'm gonna remain skeptical. I bet Star Fox Zero's developmental woes and underwhelming publicity in 2015 had as much, or more, to do with it.
Back in the day I just collected the Final Fantasy games and had my SNES that I grew up with. Now I have collections for DS, 3DS, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, PS2, PS4, and Switch. I cannot be trusted with money.
@Quarth Yeah I've noticed it too, and I take the bait. Like this article for instance - I couldnt even find out what it was that was going to be censored from the game. Scroll to the comments, see mostly fire, and add to it. I typed up about 2 or 3 lengthier comments before I thought better of it and deleted them. I hate to think NL does this intentionally, but they have to be aware that posting certain articles leads to nerd warfare in the comments.
@idrawrobots NOT SUDOKU!!! ANYTHING BUT THAT. My grandpa was pushed to sudoku, and he hasn't been the same since. Some of those puzzles get pretty hard you know. (Jk, No offense intended 😉)
I must of missed this article the first time around. Crazy comments section. A few thoughts:
1)you can totally cheese Dark Souls. I killed the Hellkite Drake with arrows and it didnt do squat to retaliate. You can poison the Capra Demon by throwing crud over the doorway. You can beat the giant rat to death by hiding in a doorway.
2) options are always good. I personally would like Cuphead to be a little easier because I enjoy the visuals and I've already pulled out all the hair on my head.
3) when i was a kid, renting video games, I PRAYED that there was a finished save file on the SNES cartridge I got. It meant in the short time I had I could see a lot more than if I had to play through the entire thing myself.
@Braneman While I dont see the issue with making changes, I agree with everything you said. They should of plainly said what was changed. In not doing so they left themselves open to those complaints. And I couldnt get used to the new Bosco voice either. Of course, if I'd never played the original release then it wouldnt matter.
@RudeAnimat0r it was fairly edgy for a kids cartoon from mid 90s. However, I never felt like Sam and Max were "radical edgy cartoon humor" like South Park. I always saw them as nihilistic, occassionally intelligent, Loony Tunes.
Didn't take long for somebody to complain did it? The remaster of the the first season is great regardless and I hope all 3 get some special physical version.
I have distinct childhood memories of waking up on Christmas morning, well before anybody else, sneaking to the present pile and finding a SNES-shaped gifts with my name on it. By the time everybody else was up, i'd already been playing Donkey Kong Country 2 and Yoshi's Island.
@Clyde_Radcliffe same. I've got a PS4 and sometimes I'm overwhelmed by the amount of games I have (not even considering 3DS, DS, PS2). I have more stuff right now than what I will be able to finish in my lifetime 😑
That Trace Memory sequel for the Wii never was released in the states (not sure about elsewhere). I'd like to see that. Oh and Captain Rainbow, Mother 3, the Chibi Robo DS game that never made it out of Japan.
I miss having obscure Smash Bros characters. It's neat to have Sephiroth murder history's greatest platforming mascots, but I wish Smash could highlight something I didn't already know about.
I think that "Geno deserves to be in because he's popular" isn't the point - it's that he's obscure. He's only been in one game (not counting Superstar Saga cameo) and he's unique in that he came from a collaboration between two companies 25 years ago. Plus his move set could've been great. I'm excited for Sephiroth too, but Geno has more relevancy when it comes to Nintendo and their history. Whether or not we like Super Mario RPG is irrelevant.
@gaga64 as far as i can tell he didn't reference the rhyme at all. He says it just like it's quoted in the article. It has a pretty tenuous connection to the original, like saying a character named Miss Mary who happens to be on a steamboat is referencing that rhyme.
Just change the stupid line. For crying out loud it's not like his knees are a main character (although they've received just as much publicity lately 😒).
@khululy and that's totally cool with me. Offering an opinion on the actual text is of so much more value than trying to discredit the entire thing because the notion that it's been tampered with. Personally I haven't been aware of anything in-game that made me take notice or cringe, but I've only played the first two episodes.
Good lord this comments section is still going on with the censorship stuff?
Listen, I'm a big Sam and Max fan. I own all the games in various forms, the cartoon on DVD, the 'Surfin' the Highway' collection of comics that Telltale had a hand in publishing (as well as 2 artbooks they published 'Age of S&M' and 'The Effigy Mound'). In addition to this I have other various collectible. Point is - I know the property. And if I felt like this was some major betrayal of the characters I'd be the first and loudest one to complain. IT'S NOT. Heck, I know the cartoon had many scenes changed from how they were originally written because the network was too concerned. This stuff happens in the background of our favorite media all the time. So seriously, stop with the censorship witch hunt. If you want to complain about the quality of the rewrites i get that. Or the writing of the upcoming VR game. The trailer looked horrible.
@TG16_IS_BAE I'll meet you halfway and say that it probably would've been fine to have left the script the way it was. Sam and Max don' really have a big enough profile for it to matter. But the worst case scenario (however unlikely) is major backlash, and that's not what the people who worked on this remaster (and likely the other two) need, let alone the franchise. Whether we like it or not, they made the safest choice while maintaining the spirit of the characters. Unless the big agenda in 2021 is hairless cat rights, then they're boned.
@Sun-Wu_Goku Who's truly the coward when people aren't able to to accept a creator making minor changes to their creation? I find your comment ironic given your Goku pic. Do you realize how many changes that series has undergone? Is Toriyama also a coward for allowing it to happen? Whatever your favorite movie/game/whatever is I can say with certainty there have been changes made to it that you aren't aware of. It's called editing.
@TG16_IS_BAE If it came down to it I'd rather have an asanine discussion over well meaning censorship than a potential social media circus about a skinhead reference. Personally I found the joke funnier after they changed it to 'hairless cats'. What would you have done if it were your game?
I've finished the first two episodes and it's the best this game has ever been. As for the censorship stuff - it seems like maybe a dozen or so lines were altered (not necessarily removed, but changed to "age better") and I gaurentee you'd never notice if you hadn't read about it.
It wasn't that long ago that it was fashionable for gamers to complain about Nintendo altering games for the west and shout "CENSORSHIP!". Now it's fashionable to defend the persecution of media because of things deemed "INSENSITIVE!". "We need our 16 year old waifus, but no racism please as it gives me a mix of self righteousness and indigestion".
It's a dumb joke, in what is probably a bad movie. Condemning it won't stop our kids from treating each other horribly. It falls on us to take responsibility for our actions and theirs, not waste time and effort policing a stupid, pointless Paul Anderson + Milla Jovovich shindig. I can't imagine the scenario where this movie harms anyone (other than maybe its audience).
I immediately dislike the connotation of calling something "Earthbound inspired". What does that even mean? Quirky? Earthbound itself is like 50% Dragon Quest.
@Maxz Finally, somebody gets right to the point and explains this to me. Thank you! Now I'll finally be able to talk confidently with my friends about this 'Brie'.
It sounds like this was all probably an error in Twitter's algorithm. Much less exciting than the comments would have me believe. I feel like having those types of heavy conversations on a site called 'Nintendo Life' is like holding a press conference at a landscaping company.
@illmatic20xx We really are. I'm really disappointed in the leagues of people stuck in their own political narrative that they force others to be a part of. We're never gonna get anywhere if you can't even read an article about a comedic sim game without reading a comments section that descends into a gaggle of blue and red geese.
Buh. In an effort to try and bring this back to relevancy: i've played some of the older Tropico games and they're pretty good. Not the most polished games but an interesting spin on a sim city type game.
I don't see anything in the article mentioning the US election. He refers to the last few days as being "tense" and clearly they are because several people are seeing fit to bring their own personal politics into a comments section about a Nintendo game. Is it bait? For the sake of conversation let's say it is - well stop taking it. Even fish won't take everything placed on a hook. Why should you?
I'm a bit surprised how many people in this thread are opposed to cloud based gaming. I tend to buy my games physical and I dislike being "always on", but I feel like the notion that it's going to replace all major 3rd party support is a bit of an overreaction. I think it's more of a compromise to be able to play games Switch owners probably weren't going to get otherwise.
Also - it just so happens I've been playing the RE2 and RE3 remakes on PS4. Both are great and renewed my interest in the series. 3 seems to be a bit contentious, but I liked it just as much as 2.
If all that's gonna come of it being officially released is 1) People complain because they think it's making homophobic or racist social commentary (it's not) or 2) Nintendo censors to mollify those people, then I say nuts to that. It's a lose - lose.
Earthbound is my favorite game, but Mother 3 is like this weird illegitimate child Nintendo had. They'll talk to it on the phone but they won't invite it over for holidays because they're not sure how to introduce it to the rest of the family. I am tired of waiting to see if it shows up.
@raygboyd333 as much as I want Travis, charging the beam katana might be a strong reason for him not joining. It's a trademark of the character and it could be incorporated into a move set well.
