@Ralizah sorry for interjecting since your @ wasnt directed at me, but in any case: Accessibility options and difficulty options aren't mutually exclusive. Giving someone the ability to play something they otherwise wouldn't have been able to due to physical infirmity or disability is quite different from altering the balance of a game designed around learning from repeated failure (like Dark Souls).
@Mgalens Dark Souls 3 bananas? What is this madness you speak of?
I recently had a lengthy discussion on this site about whether all games should include difficulty options, or assist modes. I came away with the impression that, in most cases, people are in support of that (I'm not). So I'm kinda surprised the comment section thus far is opposed to improving accessibility. Chances are folks - you're gonna get old or, God forbid, disabled and have trouble physically playing your games. This is important stuff. I think it was a bit asanine for him to criticize Ninty for gimmicks, but otherwise it's a great subject.
@Shunk1 i feel that. I think the choice of actors says a lot about the direction the movie will take. These people arent voice actors - they're Hollywood actors. They're choosing marketability and publicity.
Having said that, Jack Black as Bowser feels right.
@Shunk1 sure....i.....guess? I'm not really sure how to react to that. My point is that Mario isn't actually Italian, and isn't a good representative character.
It's entirely possible Mario won't be Italian in the movie. I suppose people would be even more upset, if that turns out to be the case.
That's real neat and all.....but does anybody really care? I think Nintendo is overestimating the value of their retro catalogue. Once the Playstation generation really comes into their own, there's going to be a lot less desire for NES and GB games.
Edit - for some reason the video wont embed in this thread...but follow the link. Its worth it. The shift at 1:00 puts me in a chill vibe and always gets me ready to play the game.
I've always found Brendan Fraser likeable. Not sure how the man is in real life, but based on Monkeybone, The Mummy, Airheads, and that one voice over he did in The Simpsons ("this just in - Powersauce bars are awesome") he seems like a cool dude.
@RupeeClock yeah probably. Either way, he didnt give Metroid a big green smiley face and a lobster claw for a left hand so I think it's a decent job. Back in the 80s lobster claw hands made you awesome.
I think part of the issue may be that representation is a much more complex issue than what a children's video game can illustrate. You can have the best of intentions, but it doesnt mean that the message will resonate the way it should. Lets keep things friendly in the comments - peace and love everybody 💛❤💜💙💚
@John_Koshiro I second this piece of trivia, and add that in Earthbound there is a bit where a man is treasure hunting in the Dusty Dunes Desert that is meant to be self referential.
I can sympathize, if your community was given so much money and ended up with that. They're pretty ugly, and chances are if you know anything about Mario you'll immediately make that association.
Somehow, there's an english version on my SNES mini. And I'm glad I played it, because so very little lives up to 15 years (and running) of anticipation.
Theory 1) Nintendo truelly didn't anticipate how fast people would hack those things, and how popular that became. As a way to no longer foster that behavior they stopped the classic consoles.
Theory 2) It's too costly, for one reason or another, to do an N64 classic or Gamecube classic. Controllers, larger game files, whatever.
Theory 3) they want to support classic titles on the Switch, and dont want people to have an alternative to their own service. I'd say this is the most likely theory....if they actually had decent support for classic games on Switch.
For a very specific type of person (say, someone who wants to play most (all?) Of the Zelda games) sure. Everyone else - no. I enjoyed the Wii U a lot, but it would be impractical to invest in it now, when you could probably get a Switch for the same investment.
I dont play video games competitively, but I do play some board games that way. And let me tell you - they do not go well with cheese. Nothing makes the experience more boring for me.
I really enjoyed seasons 1 & 2, but never got around to season 3. I heard it was more-or-less trying to be Game of Thrones and that it wasn't as good as the other seasons.
Star Fox 64 might be my favorite N64 game. It's arcade-style, shoot 'em up fun; but it has depth with multiple paths and high score challenges. Voice acting even! It may be perfect.
@TheFrenchiestFry thats fair. They do love to call back to the 80s cartoon a little too much. I prefer that over all the reboots though. I cant keep track of TMNT.
@johnvboy It certainly seems like that can of worms has been opened. I....don't have much of an opinion I guess. I grew up in the 90s and I feel like there used to be a saying something like "Don't like it? Don't buy/watch/play it". I may not like it, but I don't have to play it. I think the back-and-forth we're witnessing isn't even about the game anymore 😕
@BulbasaurusRex Thank you for posting that. It's that simple - game has an AO rating, so putting it on the eshop would violate Nintendo's policy. Thread over....?
@johnvboy I get what you were saying that, AO rating aside, Nintendo refusing to list a game would be putting themselves in a precarious spot. It gives the impression that they rejected it for moral reasons, and with that comes backlash. I may think these games are wet, hot, garbage - but I can see where someone who likes them feels like they're being...mistreated maybe? Regardless, it's Nintendo's call. It's their storefront and they can decide what they want to sell. That is a form of expression itself.
The hyper defensiveness is strong in this thread. Anybody trying to defend the game from "supression" or "censorship" is misinformed. You're being played like a fiddle (I suppose he is the super seducer, after all). Richard La Ruina's games aren't erased from existence, there just not available in all stores. Nobody owes this schmuck anything. Meanwhile he's going to gain publicity from an audience trying to position him as a victim. You want to give him your cash? Go ahead.
Typical reactionary comments. The game probably shouldn't be banned for explicit content if it doesn't contain any, but regardless the games are probably trash. Big whoop.
I'd like to see this concept but with the genders reversed. A woman tries to seduce a bunch of men. Starring Brie Larson.
@BloodNinja what you said about role playing board games is the way to look at this, I think. It's the progenitor of the video game genre, and if a game focuses on emulating stats, rng, etc then I think it's attempting to be an rpg. Those elements may exist in Zelda, but the focus is on interacting with the gameworld and not stats or a "build".
Yeah - back in the 80s before RPG became a major console genre I'd say so. Now I think it's the quintessential adventure game and obviously not what we typically consider an RPG.
I love the Mother series more than most, but it's difficult for me to seperate the games from their sprite-based artstyle. It would be like seeing Zappa without his 'stache.
I would rather see Super Mario RPG in this artstyle. Feels like what that game was going for anyway. A remake would be good but a proper sequel would be amazing.
@SmaggTheSmug your comment made me remember something:
I just started Bloodborne recently and there's a trophy you earn for beating the first boss. The % displayed of players who also earned that trophy was less than 50%. I was shocked. For a game as popular as that, less than half the people even played far enough to finish the first boss encounter.
"Completing a game" has always struck me as a strange construct. It makes sense for linear games with an end point, but what about games like Tetris? Or Street Fighter? When are they done? My perspective is a game is done when it stops being fun.....well..... That's what I would believe if I didn't have a horrible compulsion to finish things I don't even like.
Played it on PS4, and it's a hard game to recommend. I enjoyed my time because there's not much else quite like it, but it's not fun to play and the plot is borderline nonsense. If you like David Lynch films (and I do) and you can tolerate some jank then you're probably fine.
I don't want to pile-on, as the game will probably be as fun and functional as the rest of the Pokemon games, but it feels lazy and out of touch. Maybe it's because I've been playing my PS4 a lot lately, but seeing Diamond and Pearl I'm deeply underwhelmed that it looks like it could've been a 3DS game.
I think New Pokemon Snap and Legends look much better and much more inspired than the mainline pokemon games have in years.
