Update [Wed 30th Dec, 2020 00:00 GMT]: Skunkape Games was nice enough to reach out to us, and well, it turns out it has already teased Season 2 on Twitter. Below is an "early look" at a remastered location from the first ep, Ice Station Santa.
"We hope that playing Sam & Max Save the World gives you cheer this holiday season. Meanwhile, we're looking ahead to 2021..."
Original article [Wed 30th Dec, 2020 01:55 GMT]: Earlier this month, the crime-fighting duo Sam & Max returned to the spotlight in Sam & Max Save the World Remastered.
If you were hoping for more remasters, you're in luck. In a recent Reddit AMA, Skunkape Games - a small indie developer comprised of former Telltale employees - confirmed season 2 and 3 were on the way. In fact, the second season has been in development for some time now:
"We started work on remastering Season Two before the Save The World remaster even came out! Surprise! How well Save the World sells will help us determine the scope for the remasters of seasons 2 and 3."
As noted, the sales of Save the World will determine the scope of the next lot of remasters. If you want to show your support for the the series, but aren't entirely sure what to expect, why not read our review - we awarded the six-episode compilation eight out of ten stars, and said it was entertaining as ever.
Are you eager to get your hands on remasters of seasons 2 and 3? Have you played the remaster of Save the World yet? What did you think? Let us know in the comments.

I wonder what they'll censor next?
Didn't take long for somebody to complain did it? The remaster of the the first season is great regardless and I hope all 3 get some special physical version.
Awesome news!
@BloodyMurder Then ask them.
Brilliant, the second season is a particular highlight for me. The remasters are fantastic too, there’s a lot of love and care put into them. The devs clearly feel passionately about the series and it’s good to see it being revisited.
I gave season one a go. I thought it was great! I’d love to play more!
@BloodyMurder was there stuff censored?
I never played the original, so I wouldn’t know.
Loved the first game, never played the others, am very excited.
@Alpha008 They rewrote jokes that they felt had aged badly. They also recast Bosco so that he was portrayed by an African American voice actor instead of a white one. There’s also the fact that the original voice actor had this article written about him last year. Not saying it was definitely a factor but still, perhaps played a part in the decision. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-03-19-devil-may-cry-5-voice-actor-pulls-racist-and-transphobic-videos-from-his-own-youtube-channel
After they censored the first game I have zero interest in anything else they do with this. No thanks, I'm sticking with the originals.
@JayJ Have you even tried it?
Im glad they remastering some classic serieses. Just wish they would go further back and remaster sam and max hit the road, loom and the dig and other great lucas arts classics. Wouldent mind if they brought the remastered monkey island games to switch eather. I mean the first two are remastered anyway and think its about time curse and escape get a remastered also.
Great! Was hoping for this. Loved the first game on Wii, but gave up on the 2nd as the frame rate and sound clipping was SO appalling at times. I am rarely one to complain about these things, but it was to the point I never got far with it and sold it.
@nessisonett That whole “people should only play people of their own race” thing is 1) quite racist and 2) stupid, since you’re not going to get that for international dubs anyway. Samurai Jack was played by a black actor, is that racist?
The other thing seems like a more possible factor.
As for the censored jokes, lame, Sam and Max were always quite edgy and pushing the boundaries (like in the cartoon when Max leans over in a prison shower and there’s a “Don’t open until X-Mas” sign on his butt).
Would like Hit the Road personally. Switch needs all the Point and Click adventure games.
@eltomo Yep! I'd love to see Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis happen!
@SmaggTheSmug it’s more “stop passing over minority talent to give white talent job number 506”. Many actors that are minorities talk about the struggle to get hired/call backs even now. Anybody that thinks interviews are without bias is deluded.
Also there is nothing wrong with matching talent to the character when you can as they sometimes offer insight to the culture one is trying to write but has no primary source of. Example: Disney’s Pocahontas and Mulan (animated versions) had script rewrites because the leads (both from similar cultures to their characters) suggested changes that would make more sense. Mulan also had a very Asian heavy cast (not all Chinese but they tried to get more Asians) and Asian actors tend to not have may roles in western animation.
There are many people in the business, it isn’t wrong to look at all the talent available. And people still hire based on their biases; racism didn’t go away because someone on the internet said so. And racism is full of micro aggressions that stack up to become a wall people have to climb. They shouldn’t have to climb that wall. Merit should be enough but because our society has pressed advantages on some and hardships on others they have that wall plus the actual work of entering their field.
@eltomo i agree totally. Would love to get some of the real classics remastered on switch.
They just didn't cast the right person to play Bosco, I don't know if this was the director's fault or the VA's fault but he just really lacked energy in his performance and delivery. I hope they do a better job with Seasons 2 and 3. Honestly I think the guy they got could work for this but he needs to bump things up.
At the very least they need to be open about changing stuff like this from the start because it doesn't help their case to justify it retroactively like they did.
@SmaggTheSmug is a prison rape joke edgy in 2020? Was it really edgy when the game first released? I'm leaning toward no. It feels like lowest hanging fruit to me.
@nessisonett interesting... thanks for letting me know.
Well, regardless of if it’s controversial or not, the guy who played Bosco did a fine job. Very entertaining.
Banang! Banang!
@Braneman While I dont see the issue with making changes, I agree with everything you said. They should of plainly said what was changed. In not doing so they left themselves open to those complaints. And I couldnt get used to the new Bosco voice either. Of course, if I'd never played the original release then it wouldnt matter.
@RudeAnimat0r it was fairly edgy for a kids cartoon from mid 90s. However, I never felt like Sam and Max were "radical edgy cartoon humor" like South Park. I always saw them as nihilistic, occassionally intelligent, Loony Tunes.
I'll take 'em both (most likely).
Devil’s Playhouse is so good, would love to go through it again
@Losermagnet "nihilistic, occassionally intelligent, Loony Tunes."
THIS
@Renart The original? Yes, but I refused to buy the remaster due to censorship. I am not giving them any money for that.
I remember playing this on a macintosh way back as a kid and not having any clue what to do in this game
Need those physical copies, lads.
This comment thread is the first I've heard of censorship...and I'd like to know the difference between that and "changing jokes that aged badly." It does depend WHY they aged badly, after all. I want to give some benefit of the doubt since this remaster crew was apparently around for the first release too. I expect more outrageous cuts to happen when new people come in and mess with stuff.
@Ryu_Niiyama Micro aggressions deserve micro attention.
I have a feeling the effect will be opposite: VAs will be pidgeonholed into playing only characters of their race. I bring up Samurai Jack because it’s a great example of someone not playing their race: Phil Lamarr as a Japanese character. I have a feeling now the few black VAs will only play black characters.
And again, it doesn’t make sense internationally. There aren’t any black VAs fluent in Polish to my knowledge. Who is supposed to play Bosco in a Polish dub? The original Sam and Max had one, with star actors in titular roles.
@RudeAnimat0r How is a rape joke ever not edgy? Not to mention the whole idea behind Sam and Max is “police brutality and loving it”.
Ah here we go again, we need to buy the first season if we want the rest. Season 3 is the only one I never played because it was not on Wii like the first 2. I'd rebuy the first 2 if I could get all three on one cartridge or something. Or even separately, I'd be more inclined to rebuy what I already own if I could get something physical for my money.
I don't really mind they cencoring jokes that are outdated HEAR THAT WORD outdated, All jokes aside I really need to try the games it sounds like its A really lot of fun to play And its not even that much money looks worth the price, bet once I play it i'm going to die waiting for the other remasters.
@Braneman This. Honesty is the best policy.
When asked about this, Skunkape said that there would be no changes to the dialogue, when it came out, they said along the lines of "forgot about it" yeah nice try.
Because of this, Skunkape studios may be on my strikelist for me.
I don't know which season it was, but I got the season titled The Devil's Playhouse free back on the ps3 via plus. Really enjoyed it. A lot more interactive than some of Telltale's other games (not a complaint, as the stories are generally great).
I never heard of this series before the remastered version and I gotta say, I love it! I don't know what jokes have been censored or whatever but it's still pretty funny for someone new to the game like myself. I do hope to see more Sam & Max on the Switch going forward
Huh... so if they don’t censor it, they’ll get in trouble, and if they do censor it, they’ll get in trouble.
Bit of a no win situation there.
@SmaggTheSmug Edgy can either be read as sharp or provocative. I would argue this joke is neither. It's not particularly clever, nor is it provocative, given its been there, done that target.
Your interpretation may differ.
I'm really excited for Seasons 2 and 3 being remade, but there are quite a number of jokes in Season 2 that might be on the chopping block. But at the same time, I never thought Sam and Max would even make a return at all because of the police brutality cases in 2020.
The jokes that were changed didn't ruin the experience for me, but I can see how they kind of fell flat compared to the rest of the script. Not "censored" as some people would say, but flawed. If Stunkape does make changes, I think it would be best if they talked it over with parts of the community to see how they would be replaced.
@Braneman Bosco doesn't appear in Season 3, but I got your point. They at least let Ogie Banks (The new Voice Actor for Bosco) to come back to the recording booth to re-record some lines for a patch (Already on PC, soon to the Switch port) I'm willing to forgive the quietness of his tone because I heard he had to record the lines at home.
@nessisonett I doubt that was the case because if it was, they would of re-dubbed Jimmy Two Teeth as well, since they shared the same VA in the OG versions.
@Stuffgamer1 They changed about a dozen or so lines out of over ten thousand+, or about 0.1% of the script. I like to think of it like changing a single note of a piece of music. Some people mind the change more than others.
