Re: Video: The Problem With The Super Mario 3D All-Stars Release

Losermagnet

@Crono1973 My problem is with people accusing Nintendo of acting the way they always have, and reacting like they've been deceived somehow. Nintendo is a company and they're not above doing the same crummy things all other companies do. The consumer can complain all they want, but as soon as somethings changed there'll just be something new to complain about. Fact of the matter is we got some great Super Mario games on the Switch, during a horrible year for mankind, and I'm genuinely bummed that people are more invested in airing grievances than they are in playing some cool video games.

Re: Feature: Keeping It Physical In A Digital Age

Losermagnet

Physical is the way to go for me. It may not happen much now, but digital storefronts on older consoles will be phased out and then you're relying on your digital only copy you currently have downloaded to last you and in most cases it'll be tied to that console. When my Wii U kicks it (it'll happen) then no more Earthbound Beginnings.

Plus, I like instruction manuals and other physical ephemera included in some physical Switch games.

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch 'Walking Simulators' And Narrative Games

Losermagnet

So I'm trying to come up with an alternative name for "walking sim" and I'm failing. In a broad sense it's a sub genre of adventure game, and while I could probably come up with something (given enough cups of coffee) it will never replace whats already synonymous with the genre.

It's like trying to come up with another name for 'hamburger'. They're not ham, and they're not from a burough (i.e. burg) but the US adopted that name and now it's stuck.

Re: Another Crusade Wants To Be Super Mario RPG's Spiritual Successor

Losermagnet

I dunno, the game looks...fine? I don't like that they're basically saying "look who's cottails we're trying to ride!". Especially when they're trying to get financial support. Another Crusade needs to figure out what it's about. What it emulates from Super Mario RPG isn't important, it's what it does to set itself apart.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

Losermagnet

2008 (I think) was the year of cammie dunway and the wii music e3. I can't remember the year in terms of game releases, but I know that was one of the few times I was reconsidering video games as a hobby. Even through the bad, bad stuff (Iwata passing, droughts, etc) I was never embarassed like I was then.

Re: Feature: 10 Of The Most Blatant Snack Sponsorships In Retro Gaming History

Losermagnet

@MrBlacky I want to say they aren't but I haven't researched it myself. As @ChromaticDracula mentioned, there's Utz brand potato chips as well as japanese panda crackers (the brand name escapes me). While it's possible they're the same parent company, I think it'd be unlikely.

Side note - this game was the first time I'd ever heard of Utz brand potato chips. Now I see them everywhere.

Edit: I googled it, and evidently it was partially inspired by both Chibi Robo's small size and that he travels across the world in the game:

Re: Feature: 10 Of The Most Blatant Snack Sponsorships In Retro Gaming History

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else: Chibi Robo! Zip Lash. You can collect real brands of candies and snacks at the request of a handful of characters. Once you provide a certain snack they crave, they go on about how delicious it is. I actually thought this was really cute. You collect candy from different countries, so it wasn't like it was all stuff I could buy locally. It reminded me of the Duracell battery from Pikmin 2. It's product placement, but it doesn't feel so blatant.

Re: Talking Point: Does Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Rollout Of Event Updates Make It Feel 'Incomplete'?

Losermagnet

I appreciate you naming your island 'Twin Peaks'. Classy.

I think I have a personal problem with a game adding content via updates later. I dislike the notion that what I paid full price for is not the "full" product. However, Animal Crossing is the perfect fit for that kind of content rollout. I still don't like it, but it wasn't as bad as say Kirby Star Allies. I was finished with the game by the time the extra content eas released.

My biggest grievance is with the quality of the content being released. I don't think what they've done has been very fun, frankly. I love the game to pieces, but I find a lot of the extra characters and their content to be tedious busywork. Gulliver use to quiz me about a real world location, now I just have to dig up 5 mcguffins. It's those kinds of details that make the day-to-day experience a bit of a slog.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #50 - ActRaiser 2

Losermagnet

Japan's actually not as bad at first glance - notice the scorch marks in a 'V' shape implying the hellscape is consuming the heaven's above....okay it's still not great but it has subtlety.

Edit - looking at it again there's kind of a face in the smoke above the pillar.

Re: Random: The Last Of Us Director Admits He's A Nintendo Fan In Podcast With Reggie Fils-Aimé

Losermagnet

@UmbreonsPapa yeah, can't we go back to disliking games because they're bad? Not because they don't meet our personal values.

I get that this guy is guilty of stirring up controversy. But who cares? None of it actually matters. History will not remember him as an arbiter of change, or any of us for that matter. If anything, getting worked up validates whatever point he's making.

Re: Video: Catherine: Full Body Gets New Switch Trailer Ahead Of Next Month's Launch

Losermagnet

@Collette That's been my impression too, more or less. Respectfully, Erica is a minor character that doesn't matter much in the overall scheme of things. She's "part of the gang", so her friends speak to her informally.

I feel like the fiction here is fine as is. Is it tasteful or tactful? Heck no! Did i mention that you get a pair of glasses that lets you see everybody in their underwear?

Re: Video: Catherine: Full Body Gets New Switch Trailer Ahead Of Next Month's Launch

Losermagnet

@RPGamer For the sake of conversation I wanted to say that I never felt like Erica was shamed in the story. Sure, some friends she's known for a long time talk to her like jerks....but her friends are a huge bunch of jerks. Vincent in particular, hence his predicament in the events of the game. But being a cisgender male my perspective and knowledge is limited.

But (and i'll try really hard to avoid spoilers so dont read the rest of this sentence of you want to keep things secret...) I'm surprised I only ever hear people talk about Erica. It makes me feel like people havent played the game. Thats all i'm gonna say about that so far.

And I welcome any constructive discussion. At the very least you can say that Catherine got us talking more about this subject.

Re: Video: Catherine: Full Body Gets New Switch Trailer Ahead Of Next Month's Launch

@Wolf_Link Kind of but not really...closer to zero escape than hotel dusk. Check out some gameplay videos of the tower climbing sections because the gameplay is divided into narrative sections and then tower climbing. It's much more fun than it looks, but it could be a deal breaker.

You'll probably dig the narrative. It's a bit darker with some horror elements. It focuses mostly on the main character's love life and personal growth, but it may make you question some things about yourself too. As someone who LOVES 999, I really enjoyed Catherine.
