@Crono1973 My problem is with people accusing Nintendo of acting the way they always have, and reacting like they've been deceived somehow. Nintendo is a company and they're not above doing the same crummy things all other companies do. The consumer can complain all they want, but as soon as somethings changed there'll just be something new to complain about. Fact of the matter is we got some great Super Mario games on the Switch, during a horrible year for mankind, and I'm genuinely bummed that people are more invested in airing grievances than they are in playing some cool video games.
Does no one remember when they slapped the original Mario All Stars on a Wii disc and called it a day? 3D All Stars isn't all it could've been, but that's more typical of Nintendo than not. You know what you're getting into: buy it, or don't. Anything else is just sour grapes.
@johnvboy eh, personally I think both political ideologies have been making an effort to discredit the other. But, respectfully, I don't want to discuss politics.
@WoomyNNYes that gave me a chuckle. Love classic simpsons.
Also, it's been mentioned previously in the thread but bears repeating: best buy preorders are up with free, release day delivery shipping. I usually go amazon, but you win this round best buy.
Physical is the way to go for me. It may not happen much now, but digital storefronts on older consoles will be phased out and then you're relying on your digital only copy you currently have downloaded to last you and in most cases it'll be tied to that console. When my Wii U kicks it (it'll happen) then no more Earthbound Beginnings.
Plus, I like instruction manuals and other physical ephemera included in some physical Switch games.
It's nice, but as others have said it's not very Ghibli (well, Miyazaki at least). I feel like the in-game models bear a closer resemblance to Ghibli than this image. On the plus side the landscape is about right, I think.
So I'm trying to come up with an alternative name for "walking sim" and I'm failing. In a broad sense it's a sub genre of adventure game, and while I could probably come up with something (given enough cups of coffee) it will never replace whats already synonymous with the genre.
It's like trying to come up with another name for 'hamburger'. They're not ham, and they're not from a burough (i.e. burg) but the US adopted that name and now it's stuck.
Yeessssssss. Finally a perfect score. I often rush through these at work (employee of the month right here). But this time I told myself I wouldn't rush it.
Kaiju and monster fans be on the look out for another game called 'Dawn of the Monsters'. I read a preview about it in NF magazine awhile back. For a sec I thought this was that game, but it's not! 'Dawn' will be a brawler.
I dunno, the game looks...fine? I don't like that they're basically saying "look who's cottails we're trying to ride!". Especially when they're trying to get financial support. Another Crusade needs to figure out what it's about. What it emulates from Super Mario RPG isn't important, it's what it does to set itself apart.
2008 (I think) was the year of cammie dunway and the wii music e3. I can't remember the year in terms of game releases, but I know that was one of the few times I was reconsidering video games as a hobby. Even through the bad, bad stuff (Iwata passing, droughts, etc) I was never embarassed like I was then.
@Aronin Shin Megami Tensei is a long running series with a bunch of spin-offs, one of which is Persona. Mainline Megten games don't have social sim elements like Persona. They're more straightforward, challenging RPGs. However, that isnt to say they're entirely free of player choice
I'm stoked. The Megten games aren't even this year, but i'm happy. I wasnt expecting much so it was a pleasant surprise.
I think anybody seriously upset with Nintendo about this should maybe reflect a bit. Ninty couldn't of planned for 2020. The drought sucks, but we're all feeling it.
After playing this on my ps2 recently I cannot tell you how many times I muttered to myself, "I really wish this was on the Switch". I'm totally stoked for this. Now Atlus, just release all those other great ps2 games on the Switch and I won't bother you ever again. Promise.
@MrBlacky I want to say they aren't but I haven't researched it myself. As @ChromaticDracula mentioned, there's Utz brand potato chips as well as japanese panda crackers (the brand name escapes me). While it's possible they're the same parent company, I think it'd be unlikely.
Side note - this game was the first time I'd ever heard of Utz brand potato chips. Now I see them everywhere.
Edit: I googled it, and evidently it was partially inspired by both Chibi Robo's small size and that he travels across the world in the game:
I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else: Chibi Robo! Zip Lash. You can collect real brands of candies and snacks at the request of a handful of characters. Once you provide a certain snack they crave, they go on about how delicious it is. I actually thought this was really cute. You collect candy from different countries, so it wasn't like it was all stuff I could buy locally. It reminded me of the Duracell battery from Pikmin 2. It's product placement, but it doesn't feel so blatant.
I plan on buying this rubbish. A Hat in Time has put me in a 3D platformer mood so I'm gonna get this and New Super Lucky's Tale soon. Thanks to those who gave detailed comments about the update. I'm looking forward to trying this out.
Yeesh. I get the feeling paper mario has become Nintendo's 'Star Wars'. Just stop making them. If Nintendo doesn't understand why people prefer the old games, and most people aren't happy with the current releases then I think it should just stop. I get exhausted from this constant cycle of "new release announced-hype-disappointment-hate".
I appreciate you naming your island 'Twin Peaks'. Classy.
I think I have a personal problem with a game adding content via updates later. I dislike the notion that what I paid full price for is not the "full" product. However, Animal Crossing is the perfect fit for that kind of content rollout. I still don't like it, but it wasn't as bad as say Kirby Star Allies. I was finished with the game by the time the extra content eas released.
My biggest grievance is with the quality of the content being released. I don't think what they've done has been very fun, frankly. I love the game to pieces, but I find a lot of the extra characters and their content to be tedious busywork. Gulliver use to quiz me about a real world location, now I just have to dig up 5 mcguffins. It's those kinds of details that make the day-to-day experience a bit of a slog.
I've always read the title as 'live alive' (with the first pronounced phonetically as "liv") but thats just my personal interpretation. Never heard of 'a live evil' but I like that one too.
Japan's actually not as bad at first glance - notice the scorch marks in a 'V' shape implying the hellscape is consuming the heaven's above....okay it's still not great but it has subtlety.
Edit - looking at it again there's kind of a face in the smoke above the pillar.
@PoorGeno Your comment has given me a lot to think about. We may not share the same sentiment about this subject, but you clearly have strong convictions that you've put a lot of thought into and I can respect that. Thanks.
@PoorGeno sorry to interrupt a line of dialogue that didnt involve me, but after reading your well worded response i'm left wondering - do you sincerely think that anybody is forming beliefs around a video game? Do you think that this man's message will be received?
Personally I don't, which is why I want your opinion.
@UmbreonsPapa yeah, can't we go back to disliking games because they're bad? Not because they don't meet our personal values.
I get that this guy is guilty of stirring up controversy. But who cares? None of it actually matters. History will not remember him as an arbiter of change, or any of us for that matter. If anything, getting worked up validates whatever point he's making.
@RPGamer I get it - it's certainly questionable. The game director's track record is pretty iffy too. I've only watched the Persona 4 anime but it seems like they really bungled Kanji's character. In my head cannon he's a gay man coming to terms with his sexuality, but i guess...he's...not?
@Collette That's been my impression too, more or less. Respectfully, Erica is a minor character that doesn't matter much in the overall scheme of things. She's "part of the gang", so her friends speak to her informally.
I feel like the fiction here is fine as is. Is it tasteful or tactful? Heck no! Did i mention that you get a pair of glasses that lets you see everybody in their underwear?
@RPGamer For the sake of conversation I wanted to say that I never felt like Erica was shamed in the story. Sure, some friends she's known for a long time talk to her like jerks....but her friends are a huge bunch of jerks. Vincent in particular, hence his predicament in the events of the game. But being a cisgender male my perspective and knowledge is limited.
But (and i'll try really hard to avoid spoilers so dont read the rest of this sentence of you want to keep things secret...) I'm surprised I only ever hear people talk about Erica. It makes me feel like people havent played the game. Thats all i'm gonna say about that so far.
And I welcome any constructive discussion. At the very least you can say that Catherine got us talking more about this subject.
@Wolf_Link Kind of but not really...closer to zero escape than hotel dusk. Check out some gameplay videos of the tower climbing sections because the gameplay is divided into narrative sections and then tower climbing. It's much more fun than it looks, but it could be a deal breaker.
You'll probably dig the narrative. It's a bit darker with some horror elements. It focuses mostly on the main character's love life and personal growth, but it may make you question some things about yourself too. As someone who LOVES 999, I really enjoyed Catherine.

Re: Video: The Problem With The Super Mario 3D All-Stars Release
@Crono1973 Fair enough. But wouldn't you rather share your experiences with the game(s) then get keyed up about something you can't control?

Re: Blood Bowl 3 Brings Violent Fantasy Football To The Nintendo Switch In 2021
When this is released (as long as it's not a disastrous port) we should get a league going.
Re: Blood Bowl 3 Brings Violent Fantasy Football To The Nintendo Switch In 2021
Great game thats existed since the mid 80s. Great mix of strategy, risk mitigation, and bawdy antics.
Re: Feature: All The Paper Mario Games, Ranked By You
The sticker star rating seems fitting. While I don't think it's as bad as it's made out to be, it's a very 'meh' game.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Paper Mario Game?
Perhaps I was born a console generation too early because I like Super Mario RPG waaaaaay more than any Paper Mario game.

I like instead of a straight poll we rate each individual game, because everybody knows those dice are loaded.
