Playtonic — the folks behind Yooka-Laylee — just announced their publishing arm, Playtonic Friends, and now they're announcing their next title: Blossom Tales II: The Minotaur Prince, a sequel to the original Zelda-inspired adventure game by Castle Pixel.
"Think A Link to the Past meets Princess Bride" is the pitch for Blossom Tales 2, with the developers focusing on "marrying fun gameplay with memorable storytelling". The sequel is a love letter to retro action-RPGs, which is very much in Playtonic's wheelhouse — take a look at these screenshots to get a feel for the game and its inspirations:
Blossom Tales 2 has been slated for a 2022 release on Switch and PC.

That’s pretty sweet. Day 1 for me
Zelda X Chrono Trigger X Princess Bride?
I'm in.
I mean, I liked the first game and I'm happy that it's getting a sequel...
..but I hoped this would be more original. In fact this seems to copy Zelda even more agressively than the first game.
This is bigger news for me, personally, than the Direct! I loved the first one! This is awesome news. The first one cribbed from Zelda quite a bit, but I loved the narrative vehicle.
Original was great so will keep an eye out for this
Wow that's great news. This is a sequel I look for each time there's an indie world. First game was so good, and this looks even better. Reminds me of links awakening.
The first Blossom Tales was great. Will definitely get this one too.
I’ve had Blossom Tales since the week it came out and I still haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe it’s about time I sorted that!
Nice! I'm s still playing through the first one and so far it's great!
The owl and the Eagle on top of the tower are practically copied from Link's Awakening, the ocarina is the same as in OOT.
Taking inspiration from Zelda is fine, but they could be more creative with the way they handle the source material.
@NintendoJunkie did u not play link between worlds? It's stolen from that.
I would love this series if the graphics weren't so horrible. If it could just look decent, like stylized instead of just as square & squatty as possible in a 8 bit world.
If I bought games based on description alone, this would be a day-one buy.
Anyway, nice to see Playtonic branching out. I've really enjoyed both Yooka-Laylee games.
Instant buy. Loved the first one.
Awesome news! I love 2D Zelda titles and got the original Blossom Tales for free with my nearly expired gold coins when it was on sale for like $3 or so. Was going to give it a play through this fall. If I like the game, which I’m sure I will, then I guess I have the sequel to look forward to next year!
Blossom Tales is a sweet and endearing love letter to Link to the Past and I’m very happy to see a sequel on its way.
@chipia I played Link Between Worlds, but don't remember the mana system tying into bombs and arrows? I'll have to rev it up again.
The graphics aren't great but they didn't drive me too crazy. Not enough to get turned away at least.
@twztid13 Just checked... You are totally right.
@NintendoJunkie it's still a good, fun system, it just wasn't their idea.
Hopefully they learned from the first game. The latter half was just really annoying to play.
Nice! Really enjoyed the first one
The original was... ok. There was literally nothing that stood out though. The storytelling was unique, I guess.
Those character designs, riding that line between cute homage to straight rip off, eh? Joking aside, I played the demo of the original and while fun, it was a bit too saccharine for my taste.
I thought the original was fine. It didn't do anything special, fresh, or unique, but it was enjoyable enough. I fully expected a clone of A Link to the Past and it did everything I expected and nothing more. I was interested in that, as I hadn't played that type of game in.... gosh, at least a decade probably. I'm not sure I'll rush out to grab the sequel because that itch has been scratched.
Almost forgot: I loved the storytelling style and humor. Not that it was gut-busting, but the jokes were cute and the grandpa/grandkids often said something that made me smile either with humor or cuteness.
The first one was a great game!
Even if the second one isn't as good as the first one, it could also be a very very very good game.
The trailer won me. I'm hyped!
The first one was fine, but I'd like to see a more unique take on the formula to get me to buy a second entry in this franchise.
Blossom tales was a good time waster, although the story change mechanic (where in a certain section you either fight ninjas or pirates as the enemies) is heavily underutilized. I kinda liked that one even if it's cosmetic it feels. Will it get another shot in the sequel?
Hopefully they will fix the biggest problem in the first one: it was too short and I kept hoping for more
