I want this to turn out well although the theme is rather niche. With kart racers riding high on the success of MK8 I'm surprised we haven't seen that Diddy Kong Racing sequel. I miss Diddy in MK, he always looked so animated and barely in control.

This may be ridiculous but they have listened to their customers. Where are the themes for my Switch?

You can play Carmageddon IN a Tesla though, just with irl consequences! Seriously though, this is redundant if you have a Switch/phone/3DS/PSP or Vita. Which gamer has a Tesla but none of those devices?

I feel that Ultimate is bloated with echo fighters and questionable additions and also under developed when it comes to everything except the actual fighting. Smash 4 is almost perfect imo, building my trophy collection keeps me interested. The extras in 4 are like an interactive Nintendo history lesson with demos & links to eshop VC. Imo Ultimate does the fighting & character/stage/music selection better, everything around that is lacking.

I agree and partially explained. Proprietary memory cards & other anti-piracy measures, over engineered & expensive hardware with 2 models at launch, lack of investment in software and advertising and failure to utilise the upscaler on board OG units to dock to a TV are some of the reasons. The PSP was loved for many reasons then Sony managed to convince us all not to buy the Vita. I got mine for £25 in mint condition in 2014 & immediately researched the 'mystery port', yes it was going to be a Switch but Sony abandoned the idea in favour of Playstation TV. I bet a Sony exec cried when Switch was announced!

PIRACY SOLD PSPs!! They sold many more units than software. Every cloud, eh. Look what happened to Vita sales when they doubled down on the anti-piracy! They basically got rid of the silver lining.

Here's a crazy idea Nintendo - make your immensely profitable back catalogue available for humans to purchase legally and use an industrial strength poltergust to vacuum up all the money! If you don't make more than 15 million in a year I'll be very surprised, no need for expensive lawyers! Hacking in general is inevitable but only damaging if revenue streams are affected. Anything before Wii U or is no longer on sale is fair game as no harm is done.

Great article. For me a large part of the attraction to Nintendo is the anticipation of their next unique and inventive hardware & software. The Switch was developed mostly under the 'conventional' Nintendo philosophy of the old guard. I am very interested to see how the new management moves the industry forward. One thing is for sure - Iwata's Nintendo is no more and the next generation of hardware will be a strong indicator of the company's evolved philosophy & motivation. Please don't go dark side, Nintendo.

It deserves the record of most durable controller as my original controllers are still tight as a drum after 20 years! Modern controllers are crying in the corner.

GameCube is my favourite console although I lent mine to a friend and he sold it for £15! I have every game I want except Paper Mario TTD & play on my Wii. It's funny how a GameCube compatible Wii is cheaper and far more available than an original 'Cube, my friends didn't even realise they effectively own a 'Cube and can start collecting & playing. Even the controllers are easy to buy! (Best controller ever btw)

Mushihimesama is my favourite CAVE game so far! Dodonpachi doesn't quite hit the highs of Mushi or Espgaluda II for me personally but it is pretty fantastic & very similar. More complex than Mushi but less than Espgaluda II. 8 different versions! I think you would like ESP.Ra.De, high price but beautiful work by M2.

A tiny shuffle in the right direction! I would like Nintendo to pump a wee bit of money back into the eshop - I enjoy the tunes and layout of the Wii U eshop, it's a nice place to be. Just copy that.

Black Flag is the piratey one, and my favourite. I personally believe they missed the opportunity for a fresh IP there as it is very light on the assassin stuff & introduced enough piratey stuff to justify a new series.

Same reason COD and shark cards are big sellers - gaming is MAINSTREAM! Just like pop music, bland and familiar mediocrity seems to appeal to the uninformed masses as they are told it's 'good'.

I agree. Seems strange and inconsistent that the Wii U stayed at a high price because it WASN'T selling yet the Switch stays at a high price because it IS selling...

I'm playing the 'Double Pack' OG Xbox versions on my 360. GTA3 & Vice City had a lot of work done including new car models, new textures & a rain effect with individual drops splashing on the screen. Soundtracks fully intact, updated to bring the best out of the console it's ported to, nearly 20 years ago. THESE are the current 'definitive' versions.

Had to stop playing this when I became a father, poorly babies are not my bag no more....

I was looking forward to the exciting reveal of Nintendo's new treasure trove of nostalgia but when it hit home how consistently miserly Nintendo has become I ordered an Everdrive & now have every game plus ROM hacks on OG hardware for £70. Refurbished my old controllers with GameCube sticks for an extra £25. £95 for everything & I own it all, hard to argue with that value. I had my wallet ready for you too, Nintendo....

I am genuinely shocked by Nintendo's strategy. Satoru Iwata would be sad to see how his fellow gamers are being exploited. As a comparison, when I bought Wind Waker on GameCube I got Ocarina of Time, Master Quest and Majora's Mask for free. Imagine if BOTW2 included BOTW & Twilight Princess on a free bonus disc.

This game has a ridiculous amount of content! Live Wire have hit their stride with these CAVE ports. No need to get salty about the ambiguous nature of the genre though, I can't think of many shmups with the meta explained in-game. The reviewer should try M2's sublime Esp.Ra.De, the only shmup with detailed meta in-game I can think of.....all in Japanese! I must have spent 3 hours translating that, as a comparison the Dodonpachi 101 took 25 minutes to read & well worth it.

I still love and play N64, although I notice the chugging at first I'm having fun & oblivious within minutes unless it's agregious. Modern racing games should always be 60fps though IMO.

I was convinced that 1st person view would become a standard option in every subsequent game, I guess it was a one-off to showcase the 3D effect.

Wait til you have to change the batteries in a PS3, PS4, PS5, joycon etc in a few years. Major hassle, my Xbox 360 controllers & Wii motes suddenly seem progressive for sticking with AA cells...

Nice idea, GC is my favourite controller although it lacks buttons for some modern games. I have dedicated Smash original controllers and 2 for all other games. They're still tight as a drum after 20 years! No drift, chunky rumble, dual purpose triggers, ingenious face button layout. Just looking at a GC controller makes me happy as does holding one.

I miss the rubber chicken with a pulley on it, more games should have those

@DashKappei Same here! When I learned of arcade mode I waited for it to hit Switch & can't wait to give it a bash again later. Anyone who likes this may also like Broforce which has great online multiplayer.

Ironic, they've become the very thing they satirized and commited grand theft on their customers!

I reckon the devs finally tried playing the cart after all the QA was done by digital customers and realised there is a fatal glitch that fries your Switch. Who knows what unpatched nonsense is on those skeleton cartridges!

Doom Eternal, I perform best on this version because of the gyro aiming turned up high with very little smoothing. Amazing port job, I like to think my cash went towards the first patch!

@VeneBoy Yeah, I've been gaming since '86, a lot of modern gamers don't realise that NES, SNES, Megadrive, Dreamcast, GameCube etc.. had games at 60fps 30 years ago. 30fps became standard as graphics & AI became more complex & as long as frame pacing is spot on it feels fine.

@HammerKirby Yeah I sometimes use it but it's so much faster on Switch. Also with multiple uses it tends to mess with my PS4 & require a reset occasionally, whereas the Switch is happy to start - stop constantly. Plus I sometimes grab it & carry on in portable.
