Earlier this week Rockstar Games rolled out a new update for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition fixing a range of issues.
At the time, it was also mentioned how the update would be made available on the Nintendo Switch in the coming days, and it's now officially arrived. This bumps each game (Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas) up to Version 1.0.5 on the hybrid system.
Rockstar hasn't shared Switch-specific changes included in this update yet, but you can view the general changes for other platforms over on its official support page. Various issues and bugs have been fixed - such as rain appearing indoors during cutscenes.
Have you updated the GTA Trilogy on the Nintendo Switch yet? Tell us down in the comments.

Still not gonna buy it
Too little, too late.
@Fiyaball yes. You are absolutely correct
I’m definitely buying these games because I love them to much and haven’t played them since PS2. Hopefully within one of these patches they make the draw distance further for the vehicles… it was bad on the PS2, I remember getting mad at a few missions because a vehicle appeared right in front of me while chasing/racing at multiple points… instances like that are unacceptable on current hardware.
Can’t download the update if you didn’t buy the trash game to begin with. Lol!
I loved these games as a teen and I was going to get it day 1, but not with all the issues. I am still willing to jump eventually but after more patches and a sale.
To be honest all I'll probably do is run around playing with the cheats anyway. I just want to fly a tank using the turret turned backwards as a propellant rocket in 3 and VC... And then shoot missiles at unsuspecting cars when I inevitably crash land. I guess I don't need them to be perfect for that kind of gameplay haha
Not buying til they fix the lack of original music!
I got them and the update is getting better but needs to work on framerate and draw distance since the bugs are finished....and now there is no excuse not to put the whole game on the cartridge since it got delayed.
More patches and a heavy discount needed.
I'll go download it. Not expecting much...
At this point, any sort of updates unrelated to frame rate and resolution is kicking a dead horse. It's a wasted opportunity.
@EVIL-C This is what I did with Cyberpunk 2077. Now with version 1.31 on PS5, it is a great experience for 15 EUR.
‘Here have some icing on your turd sandwich!’
Why so all big game companies suck nowadays... used to just be EA and maybe one or two others, but almost all big studios just... completely lost their soul and... suck now.
@BlubberWhale because their black, cold hearts have succumbed to the Great Green Dollar Witch.
Wont even consider it before it's on sale and can boost decent resolutions and performance. 480p 20fps, what a joke...
Continue to fix them. Add a discount. Sell them individually. I might bite.
I'd give Rockstar £12.99 for a fixed version of Vice City with full soundtrack intact.
@Fiyaball the perfect comment to this mess
@PBandSmelly You're close. In fact it's an urban fantasy game, with small emphasis on combat and big emphasis on diplomacy and deep economy mechanics. The game would be a big hit in Russia as it would allow you to roleplay as a worker class character, with win condition being merging EA with Activision and achieving shared ownership of workers over this supercompany.
I wonder if there will be a second review once it’s had quite a few patches
I just love how upon their original release these games were praised to high heaven glitches, bugs and all. As soon as they released on modern consoles just about as buggy as they always were everyone rips them to shreds.
Whatever at least rockstar is trying to make them better. The effort alone makes it more likely that I'll pick it up on switch when it's available physical that is.
Speaking of which how bout someone get Kotor on switch physically? This digital only crap especially for a game like that needs to stop.
@Sahnec : Don’t mind if I poo!
I suppose “Don’t mind if I doo-doo” also works, but sounds less funny.
Please note that there is nothing specifically for Switch yet. They are still General, only fix prominent bugs. Frame rate, in SA at least, is still fluctuating between extremes.
The thing is with these patches, gta has been out 2 weeks, so if they would have started this whole project 2 weeks earlier the game wouldn’t have released in this state, or is that being naive? Xx either way zero interest xx
I've been impressed with the speed of the patches - good job taking ownership of the issues and fixing them Rockstar.
Rockstar have learned a very difficult lesson in overseeing and managing an external developer.
I can see why, and respect, Nintendo being very particular with who gets their grubby mitts on their IP. It's frustrating at times... I look at the lengthy hiatus of Donkey Kong, Star Fox and F-Zero, but ultimately it's worth waiting for the right development team to bring the goods.
Rockstar were always going to struggle with this one as its clear as day they haven't been keeping tabs on the development. This against a backdrop on Swit h of people wondering why GTA5 hasn't come over too...
On a positive note to end... what have Rockstar been working on that they completely took their eyes off the Trilogy?
Man, what a disaster this game has been.
I won't download it because I'm never going to buy this travesty! I had the physical edition pre-ordered but as soon as the game launched and all the bugs and issues being reported, Rockstar has now lost me as a customer forever! I won't buy this and I won't be buying any other rockstar games ever.
This was just absolutely unacceptable and there are so many other great games and too little time so this helps me narrow down my list by never buying and worrying about another rockstar game from this point on.
Looking forward to picking this up when it's fixed. The enhanced controls should help. I played the original versions which were previously available on the PS4 recently and the controls aren't great by today's standards.
@Spider-Kev
Only a handful of songs are missing from the games, and you probably wouldn't even notice which ones were gone if you played them.
you can't polish a turd

I only wanted San Andreas. A single 20 year old game with updated controls might be worth £30 to me but until we get the GTA5 style controls promised, there are plenty of other games to spend my money on.

@coned
1: no, I said not everyone is
2: that child (@killerBOB) thinks that people won't miss content.
3: that child (again: @killerBOB ) never played the originals
4: no one asked for your feedback
I can see R* cancelling the physical release altogether
Can you imagine the crazy amount of SD card space (your cost) they will take up fixing this game?
I will buy this when 1. It has been patched sufficiently to provide a good experience and 2. It is $30 or less. It'll be worth it at that point.
And this is the problem of converting to mobile and then converting it back. Why didn’t they start with the original code.
I was so into it when they announced it, but now, will wait to see what the physical is like when released
They've added a haze toggle to SA. Vice City (which I've mainly been playing) is running pretty OK now.
@Slowdive yep, Vice City hand held is now looking pretty decent, the resolution and fps are looking better. It needs some shadows at night though, even if simple blocks under the cars like the original.
@Palaws this is what ive been saying, they have no reason to release this physically, they are not stupid, they know any momentum they had going into this has been lost, i don't see any benefit in releasing this physically.
@Gamer_Zeus I completely agree. The momentum has been lost, pre-orders cancelled, and my experience with LA Noire was that R* pulled the plug early printing and stocking them at retailers, and that was released in a totally playable state at the same time as other platforms. It wouldn't be a surprise to see them cancel the physical, it's an expectation sadly
One thing about this fiasco of a release is I learned that even if it came out 100% as intended, it's just not the versions of these classics I'm looking for. This should have either been unadulterated ports of the most up to date versions of the games fans have played for the last twenty years, or from-the-ground-up remakes that meet today's standards for graphics, writing and gameplay. Even if the "definitive editions" weren't completely broken, they are neither accurate enough to satisfy my sense of nostalgia, nor improved enough to be enjoyable in their own right.
What's the point of giving character models individual fingers and more expressive eyes if they're still wildly gesticulating their freakish torsos and limbs with every word? How does it improve the immersion and sense of scale when you're able to see proxy-Las Vegas from proxy-Los Angeles? Contrariwise, if you have to futz with things, why not add swimming/bikes/planes to all the games, or include more enterable/interactive areas so the environments feel more alive? How about rework some of the more cringy parts of scripts to bring them up to 2021's more inclusive standards?
As is, this GTA trilogy just seems by design to be the worst of all worlds.
I felt like I had to say that this new update made these games so much worse. People should know that there is a truly insane amount of flickering in all 3 games now on Switch. In Vice City the neon lights are like strobe lights now and it looks terrible. The leaves on the trees no longer blow and instead just flicker. Textures all around and street lights flicker like crazy. Same with San Andreas. So so so much flickering. Textures,lights,light poles all flicker like crazy. Lights on buildings flicker way worse than they already did. It's not as bad in 3 but there is a lot flickering now after this update. It's very disgusting. This update is terrible and made these games worse and not better. None of this was happening before this update.
@Spider-Kev
With those noodle arms, you shouldn't be calling anyone else "feeble" lol!
Btw, cool cosplay 😎
@KillerBOB:
Photo is from over 10 years ago. Cell camera was crap. I'm a lot more muscular than I look in that picture.
@Doctor_Pancakes
The original PC Versions are fine, they're are not full of Bugs, as the new Versions and have better Graphics as the Draw Distance etc. as the PS2 Versions.
And you can modificate them.
Oh, I bought UT Dat one but haven't touched it when seeing the slew of glitches on it. Won't play it til it's playable the way it should be. 'Dying Light' has been keeping me busy 👍🏾
Unless they do some major fixes for the Switch version before whenever the physical release comes out then hard pass
I feel so sorry for the people that bought the switch version of this mess
Vice City plays great. The other two not so much.
I'm still going to get the physical Switch version, but not until it's been updated, patched, smoothed out, ironed out etc etc, and maybe even re-reviewed and becomes an enjoyable experience. I genuinely think it'll get there in the end. Might just take a while.
@Azuris I have no need for a gaming PC though. Between my iPad Pro and a business laptop it just doesn’t make sense with our budget. From what I have seen in just two patches I am very impressed with what they have accomplished, went from garbage to playable yet poor ports that do have some improvements I know I’d enjoy seeing. Playing these on the go is priceless to me. They will continue to improve these games well into next year, may be asking a bit much at this point but maybe they’ll even fix the body horror nightmares that are the San Andreas character models.
@Longondo more likely one of your kids broke it and you never noticed. Or you know this is a fake post. If one game can do it any game could.
@Doctor_Pancakes
I can understand the portable Point
But i am not so sure that they'll will be allowed to spend as much Time to repair the Games.
There are Bugs in they implemented in their Smartphone Ports.
So just in Case:
Any halfway modern Laptop will run the PC Versions
No need to spend Money on a gaming Laptop.
And if they manage to make them lesser broken, you'll have Fun.
Those are great Games.
Framerate still not 30 fps. Nice going, Rockstar lol.
This is the new Cyberpunk 2077.
I'm playing the 'Double Pack' OG Xbox versions on my 360. GTA3 & Vice City had a lot of work done including new car models, new textures & a rain effect with individual drops splashing on the screen. Soundtracks fully intact, updated to bring the best out of the console it's ported to, nearly 20 years ago. THESE are the current 'definitive' versions.
No. Just no. Do not support this company anymore.
I am not gonna argue the need for improvements to the game, but for all those crying foul when Nintendo doesn't get major titles on other consoles I don't want to hear anything from anyone so quick not to support it when it gets here. Rome wasn't built in a day. It's definitely okay to hold game publishers accountable for good quality, but if you are just gonna bash something and throw it to the wolves just because it isn't perfect don't be surprised when other games pass up Nintendo again.
