I don't have SCART so I'm using component cables for my GameCube. I do have a VGA box for my Dreamcast, though. And I agree, it looks great!
The TV I use for both consoles doesn't support HDMI but it does feature VGA and DVI connections. I actually use the VGA slot for my Xbox 360 since it's an older model that doesn't output to HDMI anyway. I eventually need to purchase a HDMI to DVI adapter that also outputs audio so I can de-clutter the living room TV somewhat.
I think I just forgot to take mine back out when I moved. I have way too many consoles to keep them all connected but I normally keep my Dreamcast snuggled up against my GameCube since they're both top-loaders. (The GameCube stays out so I can play GameBoy games in 480p. )
What's even better is that the Vita is not actually a Playstation Vita. The screen is way too big, the Sony logo above the direction pad is missing, the PS button should be oblong, the PSVita logo is missing from the bottom middle, there's a button where a camera should be, and the start and select buttons should be much, much smaller and oblong. (And that's just everything I noticed.)
Edit: Wait, I forgot to mention the charge cable. The actual plug is smaller and wider and features the Playstation logo.
I would think fans of DOOM, and by extension id Software, would argue that Quake III reigned supreme. (That said, I will totally concede that UT trounced Q3A when it came to team-based gameplay. And I would also concede that both UT and Q3A are way better in the multiplayer department than DOOM (4).)
I have a Dreamcast but I may go with your emulator suggestions so I don't have to dig it out. Although, I don't exactly remember why I put it away in the first place. I <3 my Dreamcast.
Also, to anyone concerned about our discussion of downloading a copy of an otherwise, unreleased game. Please know that the creators of ToeJam and Earl gave it their blessing and Sega has yet to say no.
I wasn't aware of the Dreamcast beta so thanks for pointing that out!
That said, I am one of those (seemingly) rare ToeJam & Earl fans that prefers Panic on Funkotron to the original. I also really enjoyed Mission to Earth. It felt like a good compromise between the gameplay of the first two games.
Regarding the new game, I love the animation style but I am also worried it will play too much like the original.
I can totally relate to post #54. Back when I was a teenager, I rented a film from the anime section of Video Avenue thinking it was a magical girl anime like Sailor Moon. And it kind of was, only it involved A LOT of something else too! I should also mention that the VCR I watched it on was located in the living room. As were my parents.
Edit #3: But in all seriousness, maybe the thumbnail image for the article should be changed? It's not exactly "safe for work." Then again, I'm not sure that Nintendo Life has ever purported itself to be.
I haven't played Super Mario Odyssey yet but my tastes pretty much line up with yours. I love Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy came pretty close to matching its magic but I just prefer Super Mario 3D World overall. It was the perfect blend of 2D and 3D style gameplay and the power-ups felt new and inventive to me.
@LuckyLand
I love Super Mario Land 2, and it's a shame newer titles haven't borrowed more ideas from it. (Did Super Mario Galaxy even feature low-gravity?)
As someone who just purchased the Wii U version, I am kind of bummed to hear that this feature has been excluded. That just seems odd to me given that Nintendo plans to release the DLC for Wii U.
The Virtual Boy holds a special place in my heart and I would love to see more software released for it. It was a unique system with a small library of well crafted games which featured gameplay that can't really be replicated elsewhere. It's an absolute shame Nintendo didn't port any of the titles to the 3DS. An imperfect version of Mario Clash or Teleroboxer is better than no version at all.
@daveisbored
I was not aware of any homebrew, ports, or rom hacking efforts for the Virtual Boy. Thanks for sharing!
I would love to play Super Mario Run but last I checked, it doesn't run on Bluestacks or Android-i86x and my Nexus 7 tablet is dead. Here's hoping that will change with the latest update. (I doubt it, though.)
I'm fine with Nintendo being secretive about what they're working on. It's the lack of transparency behind their business decisions that bothers me. Production of the NES Classic was seemingly halted for no reason at all and we had to wait nearly 6 months to be told that it would be resumed in 2018. I suspect the real reason behind production ceasing was because Nintendo wanted to divert their money and resources toward either the SNES Classic or the Switch. Nintendo could have easily said as much and very few people would think less of them. They could have even kept our hopes up with a blanket statement like, "We may resume production in the future but we have no plans at this time."
Edit: Also, I realize Nintendo had not announced the SNES Classic at that point. They still could have explained that they wished to divert their resources elsewhere.
I rarely sell what I purchase but I wound up doing just that with Super Mario Sunshine. The game was beautiful, the music enjoyable, and I liked the new mechanics. It was the god-awful Shadow Mario and coin challenges that killed the experience for me. They amplify all of the game's flaws. Stripping the player of FLUDD, the very thing that makes Sunshine unique, was also a mistake.
Wow, that video takes me back. I was lucky enough to visit that exhibit as well although I don't remember when. I know I played Wacky Worlds and Mega Man: The Wily Wars so I'm guessing it was around 1994 or 1995? I recall being amazed at the opportunity to play something that had not been released yet.
I am Groot! I am Groot. I am Groot. (I am excited! The last game in the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes series was a pleasant surprise. I just hope the staff at Traveller's Tales are not spreading themselves thin with all of the games they have in development or are currently supporting. --Translation provided courtesy of Rocket Raccoon.)
In the United States, patents, such as those for video game consoles, eventually expire and become public domain. This is why many clone consoles exist.
You can buy a Wii U console second-hand. You might even be able to use it without agreeing to any of Nintendo's terms and conditions provided the previous owner already did. I don't feel paying an "entrance fee" should factor into whether or not it is immoral to play a video game on a platform other than the one it was intended for. (Also, sorry for the late reply and thank you for yours!)
I think it's presumptuous to assume Winter Drake developed Breath of the NES for the sole purpose of promoting an original work. As a fan of Zelda, would you not want to play the prototype Nintendo demonstrated? This guy just realized he could create it himself and share it with others. His acceptance of the possibility that Nintendo would attempt to stop him isn't evil, it's pragmatic.
Also, to say that all fan-works should cease to exist just because the IP holder does not like them is absurd and borderline censorship. Furthermore, there are numerous fan-games which have been released that Nintendo has left alone. There are even websites solely dedicated to fan-games of a particular series. Even if you agree with Nintendo, they are inconsistent in their (misguided) attempts to protect their IP.
You cannot violate a company's terms of use if you never agreed to them in the first place. (And you wouldn't have if you were playing Breath of the Wild exclusively using CEMU.) Also, I scoff at any company that tries to dictate how I use their products. Terms of use should only apply to services and even then I think companies abuse the notion of what is considered a "service."
That's a good point about Bleem! and you also reminded me of what happened to Lik Sang. One difference that may work in the CEMU team's favor is that crowd-sourcing is more common place now. That could help with their legal fees should it come to that.
While I do think adding support for Breath of the Wild this close to the release date is in poor taste, I can't really fault the logic behind that decision. Doing so is a strong testament of the CEMU team's skill and I seriously doubt they would have drawn in as many donations had they not. Wouldn't you want to be able to pursue your passion on a more full-time basis? The funding should enable at least one of them to.
Legality-wise, the US court system has ruled in favor of emulation in the past but I do think it is unwise to "poke the bear." Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo attempts to threaten Patreon into freezing the funds coming in. But who knows, maybe this will lead to a big Supreme Court case with the EFF defending and technology companies will finally be forced to stop eroding our rights as consumers. One can dream, right?
I'm kind of bummed because I just bought the Shovel Knight amiibo when I didn't have to. I was also planning on buying the game for PS Vita and Xbox One but now I may not if the price is going to increase.
I like the option but I find it cumbersome to use so I keep it off. (I have a regular 3DS.) 3D images also look blurry to me and hurt my eyes after a while. (Although oddly enough, I can play my Virtual Boy for hours.)
Things like DRM and region-protection are anti-consumer, and I find anti-consumer practices to be morally wrong. Section 1201 of the DMCA may make it illegal to circumvent these practices, but I, along with many others, feel this law is unjust. (As PlywoodStick pointed out, the EFF is suing the US government over it.) So trying to deny the existence of a moral or even a legal grey area is an oversimplification of a complex issue.
