Surely these should be released as a collection, rather than individually.
I’m surprised people are enthusiastic about this rip off. I get it- they’re old Sega games, and people like them. But selling such outdated titles as individual games to a modern audience seems opportunistic and greedy to me. Nintendo can barely get away with it, but Sega? Nope.
How about you go and get to work on some new games that are actually good, Sega?
Yooka Laylee seemed to be too ambitious for it’s own good. After level 1 it was a disjointed, inconsistent mess, with problematic cameras, huge, empty worlds, and the hub world was just awful.
I think the team ran out of juice too quick when they realised the scale of what it was they were trying to do. If Yookas Worlds were half the size and had less than half as many Pagies, it would have allowed them more room to explore creative ideas and characters.
Very disappointing. Especially since Yooka and Laylee’s designs are so incredibly brilliant. I just love their design.
@mailman Capcom never withdrew Monster Hunter from the Switch- Capcom are notoriously profit driven. They never released MH on Switch because it doesn’t have the same install base as PS4 yet. MH came out on 3DS because the console was already successful.
I think you are looking too much into this. Third parties are slow to come to the Switch party because they are cautious after Wii U. Nothing more.
@Danrenfroe2016 It’s like a lot of games from back then. Particularly those on PS, Xbox and Dreamcast.
I just finished Crash Bandicoot N Sane trilogy, and I am genuinely shocked that people consider these games anything more than okay.
Undercooked world, poor character design and a completely incoherent control scheme. Not to mention the fact that the same 10 or less levels are just regurgitated over and over and over.
Utter tripe.
Shenmue is a mess. And Sega remaking it will be nothing less than ridiculous. Just wait and see. Sub 65 on metacritic, guaranteed.
@BradC40 Even if it is a port, if you, like 99.9% of the world, haven’t already bought it for full price on Wii U, I don’t see any problem with charging full price for such a great game. Nintendo invested the money in making it, so they deserve the reward.
@Crono1973 Just thought I’d say, thanks for the good discussion on this subject. Very interesting points raised on such a polarising topic.
Seems like people need to be more aware of the ways in which hacking can be of benefit to both consumers and games developers. Where is the middle ground legally and ethically? Who decides?
If people such as myself don’t participate in the hacking community, then it is difficult for us to claim to know much about the moral boundaries it may or may not be trespassing with regard to piracy.
@Crono1973 Yeah, it’s clearly not a black and white scenario. Its a shame that the benefits of hacking are so entwined with the negatives, like piracy.
I will admit to getting more than a little impatient with Nintendo’s non existent policy regarding HD remasters and Virtual Console availability. Its easy money, too.
@Crono1973 Oh don’t get me wrong, most corporations are just as bad.
I’m just speaking from more of a legal, easy now, point of view.
There will definitely be positives to hacking, in terms of consumer rights. I suppose there isn’t even any point in debating it- hacking is here to stay anyway.
@DragonbornRito
How is piracy not a valid argument here? Of course it is!
You may want to play an old game that is out of print and impossible to find, but you are not entitled to play it.
Besides, cars don’t work in that analogy anyway- it isn’t exactly easy to print a copy of a modified car that I can give to thousands of strangers. Totally different.
If you do not own the rights to the game, you do not have the rights to duplicate and distribute it.
Whether you agree or not is irrelevant. Also, there is never any victimless crimes. Somebody out there will own the rights to that game you harmlessly copied without buying. Surely it is up to them when they choose to distribute and sell their products?
Seems that theres a little bit of an entitled mentality surrounding this topic.
@Crono1973 If you modify a car, you lose the warranty, don’t you?
I think the problem here is that hackers generally do not simply archive games that they have already bought. They duplicate it, and share that product with others who don’t want to pay for it. Which is piracy.
If you wanted a copy of a rare game, surely you could track one down? And if not, then feel free to buy the rights to said game. Then you could morally reproduce it.
@shaneoh Whether you think it is right or wrong is totally irrelevant.
It’s not your decision to make.
If you don’t own an IP, you have absolutely ZERO say in what does or does not happen to it. Your moral sense of duty is worth nothing.
When you buy a game, that copy us yours. But the IP, and what happens to it, is not your decision unless you pay to own it.
If Mario disappeared because Nintendo chose to get rid of him, it would be a huge loss. But surely it’s their decision to make, because it’s their property?
@SimonMKWii So you’re saying that most hackers buy a copy of a game, then, and only then, do they back it up and duplicate it, with no intention of distributing it whatsoever?
@shaneoh But it isn’t yours to archive. You don’t own anything about it, therefore you have no right to archive it.
I could steal priceless art from the Louvre because I believed that I should be the one to preserve it, because I didn’t trust the French for some reason (I like the French, by the way) and the Mona Lisa was my favourite picture ever (it isn’t).
But would I have the right to do so?
Then again, what was the creator’s intention? If they gifted it to the Louvre, because that’s where they wanted it to be, then definitely not.
By the same token however, the artist, or creator on this instance, sold their work. Therefore they relinquish all control as to it’s ultimate destiny. If the Louvre bought it, then it is theirs, fair and square. The private ‘curator’ would still just be a thief.
@Caryslan As I have already pointed out, I actually do like Sega.
I own a Genesis, Saturn, and a Dreamcast, with an embarrassing number of accessories!
I don’t agree that any Sega console was as good as the Wii U, but thats a personal opinion. I can understand why the Dreamcast could be seen as more iconic, but in terms of quality of games library, Wii U beats it, for me, anyway. But I loved the Wii U. Genuinely a shame that more people didnt buy one, because it has some all time classic games. I’m gutted to lose Miiverse too
I do like Sega. But they aren’t a ‘great’ games company. They have had great moments, but they can’t seem to achieve it anywhere near consistently enough.
@UmbreonsPapa I get what you are saying, but Nintendo have their own great IPs to work on, as you pointed out.
If Nintendo bought Sega, who exactly would be benefiting? Financially, Sega doesn’t do big numbers. It doesn’t make sense in terms of business. Let Sega pay for their own games- and hire more skilled and ambitious developers. Sega seem more destined for the pachinko machine aisle, tbh.
@Agent721 Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of Sega games. But nowadays, they’re struggling hard.
Nintendo also don’t need Sega- why pay for Sega to produce games, when Sega will produce them and release them on Switch anyway? After all, Nintendo aren’t a charity for has-been games developers.

I hope that Miyamoto is spending gradually less and less time in that building. Much as I love the man- it’s time to step aside.
I wonder what the canteen is like...
Re: Looks Like Playtonic Is Ready To Reveal Its Next Game
@the_beaver I thought gameplay and physics were fine. Camera and content were lacking, though. And generally buggy.

Go play your Sonics and play nice

@thiz Doom was okay, maybe even very good. But let’s not get carried away, yeah?
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?
For Nintendo Life staff, you guys don’t seem to play an awful lot of ‘real’ games.
Lots of mobile puzzlers and casual stuff.
Come on guys- up your ante
It’s kind of embarrassing.
Re: Sega Reveals Shenmue 1 & 2 Remaster, But It's Skipping Switch
@mailman This isn’t a sign of anything. Take off the tin foil hat and leave the bunker locked for now.
Re: Sega Reveals Shenmue 1 & 2 Remaster, But It's Skipping Switch
Oh for goodness sake, Shenmue wasn’t that great to begin with. Go back and play it. Hugely outdated mechanics.
I’d prefer Power Stone tbh. Or Remastered Sonic Adventure games.

You better ask your mum about Santa too, while you’re at it.

Another Mega Drive Rom plugin console.

Re: Zelda: Breath of the Wild And Super Mario Odyssey Win Big At BAFTA Games Awards
What a misguided attempt at appeasing to the ‘walking simulator’ non-gaming masses.
Just shows how irrelevant the BAFTAS are. It renders their awards to Odyssey and BOTW void.
Just ridiculous.
Re: Preview: Getting Funky in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on Switch
@Marios-love-child Agreed. New Switch owners shouldn’t mind paying full price for a top class game if they never owned a Wii U.
Wii U owners who bought the game however...

@Crono1973 Do the negatives outweigh the positives? I’m just more concerned about the long term impact of the negative effects.
And a lot of the positives you list were responses AGAINST hacking.
Also, modifying cars is in no way equatable with hacking and game copying.
I can’t exactly modify a car, then stick it in a photocopier to distribute to thousands of strangers can I?

Aaahhhh, pull the other one!
Re: Hacker Praises Nintendo's Switch Security Efforts, But Says Console Is "Completely Compromised"
@SimonMKWii Because it doesn’t matter how many copies there are- it matters who legally owns it, because they’ve ponied up the dough for it.
The Louvre can sell prints of the same works, sure. But they still own the IP, or the image copyright.
Re: Hacker Praises Nintendo's Switch Security Efforts, But Says Console Is "Completely Compromised"

@Crono1973 I don’t believe that most hackers have only the intention of preserving old games.
Come on now, that’s not realistic.
That’s more like a by-product of piracy, than anything else.

It’s nice to know that we live in a world where people are determined to destroy absolutely everything good and wholesome, with not an ounce of mercy.
Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
@Caryslan Oh, and the Saturn definitely, definitely was NOT a better console than the N64.
You must be trolling.
Re: Video: See How Well Gravity-Defying Racer GRIP Performs On Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Power Couple are so ‘handsy’.
They need to restrain those hands a little. They are stealing the show.
Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
@ThanosReXXX Yeah, 5 controllers and 5 VMUs unwrapped, another 5 or so controllers in use, along with a few open VMUs
Dreamcast packaging was cool.
Though my Dreamcast stopped working a few months back- need to get it fixed.

Wish there was more places like this. The future.

@ThanosReXXX I have about 5 Dreamcast controllers still unwrapped in their original packaging.
Had a bit of a Dreamcast ‘moment’ a few years back.
A cool console, no doubt.
Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
@richyque I played, and loved my Wii U, you monster!
Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
@richyque Luck had nothing to do with it. That’s like saying that all successful companies made it on ‘luck’.
The Game Boy, NES and SNES didn’t fall out the sky, you know.
Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
@ThanosReXXX Dreamcast controller alone was a nightmare of conflicting design.
Having the connection lead on the bottom of the controller? I mean, what the hell??

Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
@Agent721 It would be nice if Sega had a revival, or rebirth. Maybe some ambitious new management. Feels like they are circling a drain right now.

Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
@Agent721 If Nintendo thought it was worth buying Sega, they would. But they know that Sega is a rotten brand.
Re: No, Sega Is Not Returning To The Home Console Arena
Sega have never made anything particularly great. Quirky, stylish, and so-bad-it’s-good, but little more.
The people who would be excited by a new home console by Sega still haven’t realised that Blast Processing never actually existed.
Xbox already replaced Sega as the white trash gaming company of choice anyway.
