how about a whole development company that's the spiritual successor to n64 rareware. and nintendo can bring them into the fold to develop for wii-u. hey, a man can dream ;]
will probably cost in the region of $20 a pop. i'm expecting to be able to stream to the gamepad at the least and if nintendo get their finger out...720p up-rendering (while keeping the titles with no widescreen mode at their original 4:3 ratio).
then there's the small issue of the controller...eg. you can't really play f-zero GX without analogue shoulders. GC pad adapter please!
being able to do this was meant to be a selling feature of the console (switching to the gamepad anytime) but it actually turns out to be special feature that little content is supporting so far. i've known this for a while but it does not seem to be widely understood. Nintendo has confirmed you will not be able to play any existing VC/Wii content on the gamepad.
echoing others sentiments on the UK front...waiting for premium to get closer to £250...whether that's at launch or not. amazon should also be setting a better price soon...they're always considerably lower than the likes of HMW.
@Jukilum true, but i'm more talking about games that have local multiplayer anyway. for example, Pikmin 3 has a co-op mode, but you can't play online. Miyamoto said it wasn't practical to implement due to the games complexity. i don't believe that's excusable in 2012 or a sign that they're taking the online gaming element seriously.
'snaking' never ruined anything, just nobody was bothered about the advanced techniques until the game went online. two serious racers going toe to toe in MKDD/MKDS is as thrilling as the series has ever been. MKDD is my all out favourite for it's superb track design.
fond memories of MK64 but it didn't have the smooth, refined handling. and the original SMK for it's simple but deep hopping round corners mechanic and amazing soundtrack. Wii/7 are more like kids versions with the neutered drift system, although 7 is a step up from the Wii version...worst in the series for me.
worrying statement. i hope it has a good amount of competitive multiplayer gaming too. you know the bread and butter stuff. seems nintendo want to focus more on the community side of things than actually implementing online multiplayer/co-op in all their titles...
these cost a lot on ebay, good gift for NA. i wouldn't mind one but not for the money. EU gets the SNES classic controller though
i picked up the gold classic controller pro recently (can often find the goldeneye bundle very cheaply) which also matches up nicely with the zelda remote. matte finish too
lol that everybody wants the transparent XL. guess it shows you the launch colours aren't saying much. i think i'll wait for some better colours or a limited edition bundle before getting one. as much as the OG is uncomfortable, the hori wheel makes it loads better.
nintendo please make a purple majora's mask edition XL if and when the game drops, as in the fan mock-up. pleeease
nintendo have been the top dog in terms of profits and user base expansion, so to change their strategy would make little sense. things are getting a little tough in the marketplace, but they have no reason to be sweating it. i can see more people going for wii-u (for nintendo exclusives) and a high powered PC for the next 'generation' of gaming.
MS and Sony will probably put out hugely expensive boxes that are trying to be PCs, prone to failure and put even more effort into pushing non-gaming content. such is the lack of vision, gameplay innovating features will continue to be ripped off from nintendo. i know i will never buy a MS console again and while the PS3 has some really nice stuff, I've had more than enough to keep me occupied between the wii and steam.
comment about online is worrying so hopefully it will still have reasonable online functionality.
in fact there hasn't been much in the way of online gaming being confirmed for wii-u, compared to info on its social hub. being able to take any co-op or multiplayer game online should be a given in 2012, i'm looking at you pikmin 3 ¬_¬
music/rhythm games hold a special place in my heart, having been involved with konami back in the boom of dancing stage in europe. they missed out big by not pushing some of the more 'obscure' instrument titles on consoles outside japan, judging by the eventual mania that was GH/RB.
rhythm heaven wii is the most fun and fresh take on the genre for some time. brings a big smile to my face and an utter joy to play.
this guy is such a clown, but the thing about developers for franchises like COD wanting a more conventional controller makes sense.
the comment about nintendo getting lucky with the wii is quite inciting and ignorant, as if they are just shooting in the dark with their hardware design. i guess they got lucky with the DS too?
screen shouldn't have been made quite so big with more emphasis on battery life - a better portable console on two levels. i could easily forsake 10-20% of that screen expansion for more juice in the tank. understand they wanted to make it really big so its seen as a pure sideways revision/alternative, but meh...
still want one, 3d should be better and the thing will be more comfortable to play on standard 3ds gives me terrible hand ache without extra grips on a lot of games...
i'm definitely not satiable, maybe reggie is on to something here. but nintendoland is not what i call 'leveraging' the franchises, more like a take away.
the 8-bit/GB games in particular are vastly overpriced to start with. these price drops are more like what the prices should be from the get go. and they're still overpriced IMO.
it's been taken down now but i pre-ordered one earlier, as did a few friends. obviously the date and possibly colour was wrong. but pre-order price promise states they have to stick to the lowest price offered up to launch, unless they cancel all the orders. in this case that'll annoy a hell of a lot of people. from reading around it's not very likely, but there is a chance people will get a great deal...some big pre-order misprices have been honoured by them in the past. it wasn't random either, the incorrect info came directly from amazon's suppliers.
i hope it won't be launching for much more than £199 regardless. but given the numbers that seems a very aggressive price point with hardly any profit involved (20% is VAT). anything close to £300 and i can see a flop on these shores. £199 and people were snapping the orders up like crazy today. i'm not sure the $180 manufacturing cost is reliable or confirmed either, i'm hearing the base cost could be a little more than that. lets see how it plays out
the closer to £200 the better it will sell, i think £280 is a little steep to be garnering good sales in this economy. especially when the 360/ps3 can normally be had for under £150. £280 seems like a predictable price point, but i predict poorish sales if it launches for that.
the games aren't actually being rendered at 1080p, at least for now. everything shown so far has been 720p, no AA (according to reports). as with the 360/ps3 it can output a 1080p signal but barely any games natively render at this, nor will they.
but can you play VC games on the upad? potentially a HUGE selling point for the Wii-U but it wasn't clarified or even mentioned. shocking really...and none of the gaming 'journalists' out there happened to ask about it either.
edit: i discovered that this hasn't been decided yet ;d nintendo if you're reading....make it so please!
i guess the miiverse isn't really very interactive at all. a whole hour (at the very least) to have an interaction with anyone on there. it's a shame nintendo still don't understand concepts that underpin the whole social/internet element to gaming. a parental control and flagging/banning bothersome posts/posters would be ample. thank god for steam.
7/10? and the comments...this is a totally different planet to the responses i've been reading to Nintendo's showing. and that's just the Nintendo fans i'm talking about. 4/10 would be a stretch, this was a huge dissapointment and while it's not exactly the end of Nintendo or this console, it's a very unconvincing start.
they've had over a year to get stuff together. lack of 1st party product and at best below average third party support. mainly ports of old games that will not sell or sell the system.
in fact MS, Sony and Nintendo all gave terrible presentations. a horrible E3 for console gaming.
very dissapointing show all in all. 1st party titles predictable and few or mini-games, besides pikmin. couple of interersting 3rd party titles but so far a real lack of support from the main studios.
gamecube all round best - majorly ergonomic and well designed, it still puts the 360 and sony pads to shame. n64 honourable mention for its z trigger and analogue stick which had a very satisfying stiffness. it was great for larger hands where you lean your thumb over from the left side and get really tight control of the stick. and the snes one pretty much nailed it for 2d gaming with the button layout. it's still the cornerstone of button layouts today.

@sinalefa i believe an entire runthrough of DK takes approx 60-90 mins, something like that.
this hank guy has serious skillz. after playing the arcade game you appreciate the raw gaming ability needed to get high scores in DK.
