Nintendo of America has confirmed you can transfer your Wii Virtual Console purchases to the Wii U.
Executive Scott Moffitt told ABC News you'll be able to move across past VC purchases and play them on the Wii U. Moffitt said there'll be a lot of restructuring necessary — Wii U will support multiple online user accounts for instance — but at least you won't need to shell out on buying Super Mario 64 for the fourth time.
We imagine the Wii U GamePad will be enough to play your collection of classic titles, but as Wii U uses all Wii controllers you might want to hang on to your Classic Controller all the same.
Thanks to Daniel for the tip!

I think that sound is a lot of you reversing your Wii U purchasing decision
Though it's weird that ABC News says:
"ABC News has learned that there are no brightness controls for the touch screen Wii U GamePad controller, which might have been a good option for saving batteries. This is in line with how other Nintendo handhelds operate; the Nintendo 3DS offers no control over screen brightness."
Tell that to my 3DS, dude.
Great, maybe I can get the titles off the wii that won't play disks at last
Oh God, it looks like I might be buying a Wii U after all. I wonder if WiiWare will be transferable...
But what about save data?
Hm, I think I'd rather keep VC games on my old Wii, hooked up to a classic tube-TV in a back bedroom. The WiiU is there to bask in the HD glory, and classic games look hideous on a flatscreen.
With a hard drive storage option, I'll be classic-gaming for FOREVER
...Now would it be too much to ask for the games to be displayed in the correct aspect ratio?
Yay! I hope we can transfer WiiWare too.
I wonder if R-type, TMNT, and other titles removed from the service will be able to be transferred. I hope so, but I need confirmation from Nintendo.
The console is pefect. We just need one or two big Nintendo games to make it a great launch!
I hope VC games will be able to be played on the Gamepad.
Yes! now I can play the classics on the new system.
I hope VC games can be played on the gamepad.
excellent news
There's one of my fears put to rest. Now, with an announcement that the VC service will continue to be supported on Wii U, I could rest easy at night.
Last question: can you play VC games on the gamepad? Do this, and the universe will surely explode out of sheer awesome.
Yes! That is something to rejoice about and I literally quit buying stuff because I didn't know if I could transfer them to the new system. Ok I am sure this will seem like a stupid question but will the Wii U play Wii games?
@Rawk_Hawk: If we can re download games no longer available I imagine the same thing will apply to games no longer on the shop. Probably will just be just a matter of linking your Wii Shop account.
But will they still be on the Wii too?
It always irked me about Nintendo systems that you couldn't just simply download stuff you already had downloaded on another system, and with transferring it would go away on the first system it was on.
@Metal_Slugger
Yes, Wii games are supposed to be backward compatible with Wii U.
@FluttershyGuy Thanks!
Hopefully I can just redownload them. If I to transfer them from my Wii to Wii U, that would be a bummer.
Well, it's good news. I really just think Ninty should have just published all the announcements online and not had a conference, lol.
@Metal_Slugger
You're welcome. That, and this news will save me from having to keep my Wii connected (I assume). Which is important, since I need all the space (physical and plug in) I can get!
@FluttershyGuy me too I have literally no more connections or much space. It's looking like a no brainer purchase for me if the price is right. I actually can't wait to try out Wii games on the Wii U with the better color accuracy and resolution. I bet those games will look like new ones with the new system.
wait i got excitebike for wiiware cuz it was on club nintendo and its saved on the wii, not on a sd card, what do i do? And will the data be saved cuz i finally got 500 points online
@Metal_Slugger
I want to see how the VC games look in 1080P, and hopefully be able to play them on the GamePad too.
Something else I'm interested in seeing is: If the Wii U can emulate the Super FX chip, so we'd see Yoshi's Island (would be pretty good to launch on VC at system's launch with NSMBU) and Star Fox.
Yeah oh and those of u complaining about it being deleted on ur wii... Think about this, if they were both on the wii and WiiU u could give away ur wii for free to someone and have lets say 80 + games on both wii u and the wii u currently had, and that would be stealing
And WiiWare purchases?
@FluttershyGuy that would be nice to be able to play them on the Gamepad. I really hope there is improvement with the vc games on the new system. I went from an old tube tv to a hd tv not to long ago and about cried when I seen how vc games looked on it.
Sucks that I was never able to download any awesome VC or WiiWare games, and now my Wii was stolen about 7 months ago. Luckily, I still have some of my first and favorite Wii titles (Brawl, Secret Rings, etc.), but I will never get that save data back.
Still not buying it.
I hope I can still transfer with my Wii...
That's what I've been wanting to hear!
Fantastic news.
YAY! Jeez i can't believe people still aren't sold. Nintendo has listened to their mistakes yet people still aren't going to buy it. Gosh this system is gonna rock. Trust me, i'm not trying to be a fanboy, this will be awesome.
I can't decide whether I want black or white.
First a black Wii U, then Pikmin 3 and New Super Mario Bros.U, and now this? This is nice! But, one last thing, will gamecube games be uploaded to the virtual console? I can't live knowing I won't be able to play F-Zero GX, Melee and Mario Sunshine again.
Smart move. I wonder once their transferred to the Wii U if they'll automatically be registered in your account. I hope so. We'll have to wait and see.
Thats great that you will be able to transfer your titles. I probably wont since I plan on keeping my Wii still after I buy the Wii U.
I'm not surprised. This is what I was expecting. It's almost certain that you'll be able to transfer the save data as well, especially since it's separate from the game file. As for how I'll play the VC games, I'd like to use the Wii U Pro Controller since it's wireless. I like the Classic Controller Pro but I don't like how I have to have it plugged into a Wiimote sitting next to me.
I'm going to be extemely interested to see how this is going to work with the PAL versions notorious 50hz VC games. I can see a lot of compatability problems here and, now that Nintendo openly embraces HD, they are going to look increasingly ridiculous if they keep trying to serve up substandard VC ports.
Here's to making GameCube available on the Wii U VC!
Just another thing that could have been announced at the conference, anyway, hooray!
Not a surprise, but its still good they're saying its a go.
Still would like to know about the new download site:
A) If any external drive will work for storage (got an old 120 gig lying around, empty and ready to be formatted). And...
B) Will this mean the VC might start to include Saturn, Dreamcast and Gamecube titles down the road?
Horray for Aussies!
Now that's out of the way, I am so glad that all my money hasn't gone to waste buying those few VC titles. Hopefully the Wii U will have an improved VC service i.e. More games, correct displays, remastered sound and controls, etc.
If the WiiU uses restore points like the 3DS does, I'm totally moving ActRaiser over from my Wii.
Using restore points to cheese my way through the end-of-game boss gauntlet is the only way I ever see myself reaching the credits.
@Pengaweeno My point exactly. I care almost as much about preserving my saved data as transferring the games themselves. This is something Nintendo needs to get with their portables that just because game and save were housed cartridge does not mean that things have to stay that way. If anything they should take it a step further separating online and offline save files.
This was expected. Wii U still doesn't impress me.
Most of my Wiimotes are of the pre-Wiimotion plus variety. Will I be able to use my old type Wiimotes on new Wii-U games without buying a ton of Wiimotion plus dongles?
@Silver_Dynamo
yeah great idea, make it to where we cant even recognize our vc games
Still not sold. Gonna wait, just in case they pull a Sony.
That would be awesome if I can play Super Mario Sunshine and other VC titles on my Gamepad, while my mom watches the Food network. I really hate that channel.
Meh I was gunna keep my Wii for classic gaming anyway =)
WiiU better not be as fragile as the Wii can be then.
True user accounts and a Wii->WiiU transfer system. THIS is what I was hyped to hear about at E3. Offer Gamecube, Sega CD, and Dreamcast games on the VC and I will be super psyched.
@FluttershyGuy
Didn't Nintendo already unofficially confirm continued support of the VC by saying that it would have Gamecube games available on it? I thought they said this sometime last year when they mentioned that the Wii U wouldn't play Gamecube discs.
Well, it looks like there is some good news today after all.
Real Nintendo user accounts? Awesome. About time.
Transferring games? Cool.
But if it's the 3DS transfer where you lose your games on your Wii, lame. If I buy an App Store game, I can download it to both my iPod Touch and my iPad. And if I had more iOS devices, I could put it on those too. That's how it should work on Wii U.
What about games like TMNT for the NES? Will those games be able to move to Wii U?
Why should Nintendo just GIVE you free stuff by increasing the amount of content u have by 2? I mean if you have all VC games on Wii U and all that u paid for on Wii that's practically stealing U pay for it on wii and move it to wii u, no WAY anyone should allow you to keep on one AND have again on another, I do think though there should be a way to switch back and forth from VC wii and VC wii U, but having 2 of the same games and only paying for it once makes ZERO since!!!
@FiveDigitLP
I do remember that now, thank you for reminding me. At the time, I wasn't sure of it being a case of a Nintendo Rep not truly "in the know" making a claim that had no truth. I was pumped for the DSi before it's release, when a rep made the statement at some event that it would have VC. We didn't actually get handheld VC until, of course, 3DS.
I hope there was truth to that person's statement, though! Lots of GameCube games I missed out on. And (while nothing's been said about them on VC) I never got a Saturn or Dreamcast, so those added to the VC line up would open so many doors!
@LordOtakWiiU
Love the name change!
EXCELLENT!!! This kills off any hesitance I have over the Wii U. I don't care about the save files, I just want the damn games I paid for available. Wii will miss you, Wii of 2006.
That's cool I guess. It isn't enough to get my blood going about the Wii U, but it's one more thing to check off the list.
I ain't getting rid of either of my Wii systems even if I get the Wii-U so this is a moot point I can't imagine selling off any of my gaming consoles but anyway...
Great! This had me worried for almost a year. Now as long as they put GameCube games on VC...
@nin-freak apparently you missed the announcement of Pikman 3 and New Super Mario Bros U
Fantastic news. I was waiting to buy classic games for this announcement - I would like to purchase all my snes games, but I didn't want to waste the money if I couldn't transfer.
Thank you Nintendo! I love you very much! Oh Lord Jesus!
@LordOtakWiiU
They're not "increasing content by 2". Letting you have your download titles on every machine you own that you bought from nintendo would be meeting industry standards.
If I want to , I can install my steam games on every PC I own.
If I want to, I could install any iOS games I owned on an ipad, iphone and any other Apple device that supported it.
If I want to, I can install any Xbox live games I bought to multiple machines (As long as I'm signed into my Live account on that new machine).
Nintendo NOT offering this service allowing you to access your download titles on all the machines you own is just nintendo being stupidly backwards again.
How about transferring Wii (disk) game data to Wii U? I don't want to start all my games over. =(
Hopefully this also include Wiiware games. When my Wii got some minor damage a year ago, I bought a shiny new Wii, but with no Wii transfer tool availabe,my 30 Wiiware games are forever stuck on the old Wii, and I sadly had to buy a lot of them again for my new Wii. I will not accept buying these games for the third time...
"Katsuya Eguchi, the Nintendo designer on hand, said work had begun on way to transfer "everything you've bought." " I guess this includes WiiWare?
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117695-E3-Transfer-Nintendo-Virtual-Console-Games-to-Wii-U
If they announce I can play my GameCube games on it too (my discs that is - not re-buying 60-odd games) then they'll have a sale - until then I'm sticking with Wii and PC.
@adamical For the iOS appstore it depends on the publisher. Some publishers require a separate purchase for the HD/iPad version.
@oldgamesonly: In a good way or a bad way? The best aim for the service would to allow newcomers to experience the classics while refining the content just enough so it doesn't feel stale to the vets. By refined I mean rendering the game in HD resolutions, remastering the sound and improving the controls if need be; not a full HD remake, that would just ruin it.
this is the BEST news so far
YES!
To quote Daniel Bryan:
YES!
YES!
YES!
@Betagam7 I agree, if Nintendo are going to continue to offer a VC service on Wii U, they will need to address this issue. We probably wont find out until the console launches and someone transfers their games. Lets hope someone at Nintendo is looking at ways to improve the VC for PAL gamers.
Ah, I feel much better about this now!
I want the VC to receive an overhaul- button customization, display options, scanlines, save states, online play- I want the VC to impress me.
Right now it seems tacked on- wasn't even mentioned during their conference..
I kinda figured this, but like someone asked already, what about the save data? That's the one that really matters, cause if not, then I have to keep my Wii. Case in point, if I don't need extra hardware sitting in my house, then I'm trying to get rid of the clutter as I have no need for a Wii U and Wii if Wii U does what Wii does and more. Stay tuned I guess....
@Madgear
It's not happening. No console has ever supported two generations prior of media. I can only assume you won't ever be buying a console again then, since the PS4 certainly won't support PS2 discs, the Xbox 720 won't support Original Xbox games, the 3DS doesn't support GBA games and the Vita doesn't support PSP UMD games.
@LordOtakWiiU
I think you were trying to say it makes no "sense". But it does.
I just downloaded a new app to my iPhone. It instantly appeared on my iPad as well. I bought the app, I own both devices. Apple lets you register so many devices, it's not unlimited - and Nintendo could very well do the same thing. It's certainly not "stealing" ROFL.
I will be fine if they are just transferred, I don't require them to stay on both - but it certainly would be possible. It would be really smart of Nintendo, actually - and include 3DS, too. So you buy a game in one place, play it on all your registered devices.
If I sold my Wii, I'd unsync my account and wipe it anyway.
Very glad to hear this confirmed, it was my big ? besides price. And I'm so glad they are offering color choice this time - black all the way for me. The white gets yellow too quickly (and I don't even smoke). I never got why they make colors such a hassle - just give us a choice. And now they are.
Can't wait to preorder mine.
@Kreegs07
I'm assuming I'll be kissing TMNT goodbye. I can't see them legally being able to let you transfer them, since any "transfer" is going to be virtual; you won't be hooking your Wii up to your WiiU, it will all be done server side through NIntendo, I assume. Since the game no longer exists on Nintendo's side, I'm presuming we won't keep those. I have a lot of nostalgia for that game, but again it's such a PITA I probably won't cry over it. So long as everything else makes it over, I'm a happy guy. So many games I bought at the beginning and still have yet to play - if we can truly play them on the Wii U Gamepad without having the Wii U on the TV screen, I'll get TONS more play out of them.
I'm not doing it. My Wii can play GCN games so I want a console that can play NES-Wii games. Sure, I could buy a used GCN to go with the Wii U, but those things break down an awful lot.
good to hear we can transfer our games over to Wii U, I love playing the classics
A logical but none the less welcome announcement. Hope something similar is available for WiiWare also.
@Rebel81
Every iPhone app is playable on an iPad, it's just if they aren't Universal apps they are effectively "emulated" and don't take up the full screen. I can still put them on as many iOS devices as I want. If I upgrade to the new iPhone or iPad, I can take all my apps with me and still keep them on my old iPhone and iPad too.
That's what would be ideal with Nintendo, as well.
What would have been better in my opinion is Nintendo releasing GBA games to the 3DS VC and the Gamecube games on Wii U's VC.
@Silver_Dynamo
i was making a joke but i hope games never get butchered
Woot! Woot!
That's definitely good news
Now just waiting on that GameCube and Game Boy Advance VC announcement......
@James Good grief and they [say you know who, don't mention them it opens a can of worms] news is full of dis-information.
You should probably make a 3DS myths article.
Ok lets clear this up.
The Wii-U is backwards compatible with the Wii but not the Gamecube.
However Gamecube games will be avaiable to download on the Virtual Console.
PS: A Gamecube disc can hold up to 1.2 GB of data so your gonna need a big SD card.
PSS: 1.2GB is probablly gonna be expensivbe to download.
but can you play VC games on the upad? potentially a HUGE selling point for the Wii-U but it wasn't clarified or even mentioned. shocking really...and none of the gaming 'journalists' out there happened to ask about it either.
edit: i discovered that this hasn't been decided yet ;d nintendo if you're reading....make it so please!
That's a relief... that was the final info I was waiting before deciding to buy WiiU. I just hope I can play my VC and Wiiware games directly on the WiiU [Awesome] GamePad!!!
@qazwsxedc You can get like a 60GB SD card.
YES!!!
I wonder if, with the Wii U's capabilities, we can get some VC titles that would have had technical issues on the Wii. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Earthbound and the original Star Fox come to mind.
The GameCube download possibilities also sound very exciting! Great time to be a classic gamer!
don't care. nuff said
alright!!!
Aiyah! I did not expect this!
Awesome! Thanks for the great news!
Now I was thinking... can we play VC titles on the Wii U Gamepad?
why dont they just coe out with a prt controller to plug in the older classic controllrs sutch nes snes n64 an gmecube ifthey bring the gamecube gam on the wii you trough shop online or make a newcontroller lik a dog bone build to play these casc games better tha would be awsum
if it werent for motion games, i'd be collecting money to get it (unless i can pay in parts) and buy it if i like it
i cant move all day like that cuz of my handicaps, so controllers (like the older ones) are the only option for me
