Really that's one of the main things I like about the guy. His art has a definite, edgy Tim Burton vibe. It's like when he releases a game, you'll know it's from him.
Or if you see a game hyped for a while here but never released, you'll know it's from him.
But even without this personal attachment I'd fail to see how anybody would regard this as the weakest in the classic series.
Yep, 4,5,& 6 actually deviated from the norm, and well.
Sure 1 & 2 had robot screens and the robot weapons, aside from those two things the games were fairly standard run and gunners. 3 added the great slide, but didn't go far beyond it. Then the later NES games were released the level designs become more involved and more enjoyable. Gravity Man's stage is sublime, Blizzard Man's submarine was great, as was traversing the oil and water in Centaur Man's stage.
And hey the lack of dud stages was great no lame Crash Man stage, Wily Stages that didn't suck, twas great :3
I feel a 7/10 with a strong warning that you need to be a strategy or RPG buff first to really get something out of this would be more appropriate.
But that's a terrible way to review something. By trying to please everyone, no one will be pleased. By that logic nothing should get above 7 as no genre is fully embraced by all.
Edit: I'd prefer reviewers to rate games based on how good they are, rather than by how many demographics that they appeal to. Also a 7 has some unjust ramifications, it'd turn off some strategy fans as they'd see it as short of greatness, as well as turning off people on the fence as the score is nothing special. With the current score there are still people who have said they won't buy it since the genre doesn't appeal to them, I like to think that most people would be at that level of common sense, instead of below.
meh rpgs are not my thing but this game looks interesting. i might download it.btw 10/10????!!!!! should be 9/10 imo
imo complaining about the score of a game you've not played is something silly people do.
For someone who doesn't mind the controls, the DS version is completely better. Better graphics, more content, multiplayer, etc.
Not really. Sure the controls are managable, but the original controls leagues better, you can boldly go out and do all sorts of risky maneuvers, that just often aren't worth trying with the DS as it's much more awkward to perform precisely.
The graphics mean little, and the added content is nice, but it's saturation. The extra content isn't up to the standards of the regular content, it's kind of nice that it's there, but it's nothing major as it's a bit of a step down from the core game anyways.
A seven looks harsh to me. Aside from the controls it's a phenomenal game. I'd find 8 or 9 reasonable (I'd probably go 8 m'self, since this is an ambitous remake rather than a completely original game), since the controls are the only real issue, and they're not that bad.
I'm suprised at these scrap the dual screen comments, some games made fantastic use of both screens (like TWEWY), while most others were used more simply to provide great practicality (like pretty much every RPG).
@Donatello I'd agree with MM3 being overrated, as far as the NES games go I'd only place it above 1 and 2. It definitely did have the weakest set of robot masters though, once Snake Man is defeated the stage select is only orange and blue.
I find 2 incredibly overrated, it was pretty standard all around, it had a few excellent themes, but it also had that terrible boss that was only prone to crash bombs, and the Wily stages were dull as a whole.
4,5 and 6 were generally much better than the first three, by straying from the mostly standard gameplay they flourished. There were awesome levels like Gravity Man's, Star Man's, Blizzard Man's and such. Everything being more vibrant was nice too

Re: Mega Man Zero Collection Announced for June Release
Hmm, I don't think I'll get it, already have 1-3.
Although it is tempting as they're phenomenal.
Re: Oh Look, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Sold Better Than Expected
That tagline is painful D:
Re: Dedicated Castlevania Fan Beats NES Version With Dance Mat
Impressive, I tried SMB with the mat before but quickly moved along.
Castlevania would be much more playable since you aren't holding down B the majority of the time.
Re: Review: Kaiju Busters (DS)
The choice to review a mediocre import game that no one has heard of is kind of questionable...
Re: Review: Mega Man 4 (Virtual Console / NES)
I agree with Corbie, this is the best Mega Man on the service at this point, and second best in the series.
Although personally I'd say 6 narrowly beats this for supremecy, and 5 is not far back in third.

All bark, no bite.
I wonder if he'll ever get a WW game released...

Re: Review: Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube)
I consider this to be the worst mario platformer made, everything feels too much like work and the mario magic is few and far between
There's a sentiment I can agree with, halfway through the game the fun ends, and the chores begin.
Re: Review: Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube)
Super Mario Sunshine still shines brightly as a classic Mario adventure.
Nope, and you've done classic Mario games a disservice by claiming so.
Re: Nintendo Download: 5th April 2010 (North America)
This is a pretty good week. It's also the worst week in a little bit.
Yay Wii Shop!
Re: Virtual Console Confirmed for DSiWare
VC-Reviews look, let's keep it this way.
Re: Review: Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (Virtual Console / Nintendo 64)
10/10 that's quite unexpected!
Re: Miyamoto: 2010 Will Be Great For Hardcore Nintendo Fans
There's a better game coming out this year, it's on the DS.
It has the words "Dragon" and "Quest" in the title, it's made of lots of love and slimes, it's going to be amazing!
Re: Ogre Battle 64 Hits Europe This Friday
Sweet, I guess I now have 4000 more Wii points already spoken for.
I still need to start the SNES one.
Re: Nintendo Download: 15th March 2010 (North America)
Saved by The Source, it's rondo time!
Re: Nintendo Download: 15th March 2010 (North America)
So excited, but no point cards to be bought in town.

Re: Review: Final Fantasy II (Virtual Console / Super Nintendo)
FFIV is a top tier RPG. However I've not played the original, so I know not how it's aged.
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th March 2010 (Europe)
I'd love it if NoA was to punk NoE and release it here on Monday
Re: Top DS Toilet Timewasters

This article is really ...ew
I don't see how people take so long to use the washroom, 3 minutes is more than enough time. Not much gaming can be done in that time.

Re: Review: Super Mario 64 DS (DS)
Been waiting a while to pick this one up from Gamestop used. Soon as it goes under $30 im in.
It's that expensive?!
Why not just go with the VC version? The controls are perfect, so it's a better experience anyways.

Need some Rondo next week.
The overrated, mediocre Kirby game can wait.
Re: Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
Well 10 years later and the aesthetic is still repulsive.
Re: Trailer: Metroid: Other M FMV Teaser
Whats with this girl, Metroid is all about killing things as a robot!!
Re: First Impressions: Sin and Punishment 2
Aesthetic is still semi-repulsive. (Well atleast it's not repulsive like the original)
Not something I'd buy as I like my games better than good.
Re: WiiWare Market Grows to Nearly $60M USD in 2009

Re: Castlevania: The Adventure is Reborn in Europe Next Week
Bad news, vampire slayers.
It's a weak Castlevania entry, with a particularily weak soundtrack.

Re: Nintendo Download 15th February 2010 (North America)
Seems my next points card is already used up, I haven't gotten points since Christmas, so I've yet to get the first PW
Re: Mega Man 10 Coming March 1st
That's cool, maybe I'll have to go through 7,8,9 relatively soon then...
Re: Sonic Playable in Super Mario Galaxy 2?
At first I was like eww, but now that I've thought about it, it could be quite good.
It could have the fun of SA1&2 (they weren't polished at all though)
and the polsih of SMG (which wasn't much fun, it just had some excellent presentation).
Re: Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 Coming to Wii
The animation looks fairly poor at the moment :l
Re: Review: Legends of Exidia (DSiWare)
I don't see why so many people think that they can't make small RPGs...
They've been done before...
Re: Review: Legends of Exidia (DSiWare)
I assumed a 6 at the end of the body of the review.
Re: Nintendo Download: 1st February 2010 (North America)
Update is uninteresting...

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - February 2010
The sooner Mega Man 4 is released, the sooner the VC will have a new best Mega Man game!!
MM3 is quite good, but 4 is quite better.
Re: Mega Man Zero Collection Aims Westward
I've only not played the fourth game, let us see if the added content is worth it
Re: Castlevania: Rondo of Blood ESRB Rated

Let's hope Bloodlines is soon to follow.
Re: Phoenix Wright May Still Appear in Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom
If they added Phoenix, I'd have to pick it up.

Is this the Japanese RPG DS fans have been waiting for?
No, there are already tons of great ones...
Re: Muscle March Coming to WiiWare on Monday
Clearly the people calling this gay are just uncomfortable with themselves, and are none of anyone elses concern.
Re: Muscle March Coming to WiiWare on Monday
Ooh only 500, I'll probably get it somewhere down the line.
Although it'll be quite a ways down that line...
