Re: Poll: Super Mario Galaxy Movie Characters Compared, Film Vs. Game Designs - Which Are Best?

DennisLofgren

I picked movie for most, mainly because outside of the leads, these designs are just higher fidelity replicas of what we've seen in the games, in other words, very true to the source material. They've made some more creative decisions in terms of the lead characters and that's where its more hit or miss for me. I thought Fox looked amazing, but I didn't like Bowser Jr.'s eyes and I'm still not into how Mario looks in the movies, they changed his proportions way too much.

Re: Poll: How Would You Rate The Nintendo Classics Virtual Boy Launch Games?

DennisLofgren

I haven't played a lot yet but I do like VB Wario Land and Red Alarm so far. I am excited to play Mario Clash, Mario's Tennis and Zero Racers. But regardless, the price of admission was always gonna be worth it for me simply to get to experience Virtual Boy as authentically as possible. Which, as a longtime Nintendo fan, I am very happy that I have finally gotten to do with this!

Re: Labo VR Will Reportedly Be Compatible With Virtual Boy For Switch Online

DennisLofgren

@Max_the_German Its gonna suck really bad if Switch 2 is the only way to play these games without stutter because the LCD backlight is not gonna look good in the headset. This would mean that we'd have to wait until the (hopefully on the way) Switch 2 OLED to get the perfect combo of correct refresh and perfect black levels.

I can't wait to see Digital Foundry's (presumably John's) review of this. I feel like he will be able to properly assess it from a technical perspective and how it compares to the original experience.

Re: Labo VR Will Reportedly Be Compatible With Virtual Boy For Switch Online

DennisLofgren

@Max_the_German Most displays, even non-VRR ones usually have different display modes. What VRR does is allow how to dynamically change the refresh rate while keeping the image active. A mode change like this will cause the image to go black for a moment while it changes the mode. Back in the day, TVs had to have both 50 and 60 hz mode for NTSC and PAL. If you've ever switched between 50 and 60 hz in an old PAL game, you know what it looks like.

The Steam Deck doesn't support VRR but you can use the Performance panel to make it display different static refresh rates natively. The LCD model I believe can do anything between 40-60hz while the OLED can do 48-90hz. The homebrew Virtual Boy emulator that was made for Nintendo 3DS was also able to set the 3DS screen to update at 50hz.

So I would say its highly likely that Nintendo will make the Switch screen change into a 50hz display mode when using the Virtual Boy app. I would say the only reason they wouldn't do this is if they were oblivious enough to the stutter that running 50hz content on a 60hz display causes so to not think of doing it.

Re: Labo VR Will Reportedly Be Compatible With Virtual Boy For Switch Online

DennisLofgren

@boxyguy Of course you can play them without 3D, you can do so in Virtual Boy emulators.

The difference between the 3DS and the Virtual Boy is that the 3DS was designed to be played in both 3D and 2D modes, Virtual Boy was only designed to be played in 3D. Nintendo always strides to recreate the intended experience in any of their reproductions of them. So this is not a technical feasibility issue, this is a design boundary they don't want to cross because they feel it will misrepresent the intended experience.

Re: Labo VR Will Reportedly Be Compatible With Virtual Boy For Switch Online

DennisLofgren

There is no way it can't be compatible with Virtual Boy. Its just displaying two viewports on the screen that are shown through lenses in a headset made out of either cardboard or plastic. There are no electronics. The only reason it wouldn't be compatible is if Nintendo put some form of chip inside the Virtual Boy headsets but even if they did, there is no sensor in the Switch or Switch 2 consoles that would be able to pick up on whatever that chip is. The only thing the Switch has that could pick up on that is the NFC sensor but they reside in the controllers and not the console itself.

Re: Digital Foundry Delivers A Tech Analysis Of Assassin's Creed Shadows On Switch 2

DennisLofgren

@wizzgamer As OrtadragoonX mentioned, that was during a completely different time where Moore's Law was still applicable.

The other aspect I wanted to note on your statement is that the NES was using cheap and outdated tech, which is why any of the handhelds at the time were able to output a result that was even comparable. The PS5 was cutting edge on release, using (at the time) to-be-released tech from AMD. The only reason why handhelds today can even approach it is because of how scalable modern games are. Not even a potential PS7 handheld is likely to be able to beat the PS5 in raw compute at the glacial pace we're going now.

Re: Digital Foundry Dives Into Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition's "Big Downgrades" On Switch 2

DennisLofgren

Every time I go to the comments on Nintendo Life on an article covering a DF video, its full of people who do not understand the point and purpose of their work.

They are not telling you that you can't enjoy this version of the game, all they are doing is informing you about it. There are times like this where there are clear downgrades but the game still plays well but other times where some versions are just bad and then its good to have their detailed reporting to keep developers accountable and allow the average gamer to make an informed purchasing decision. Maybe you see this video and think "wow that looks so much worse" and you also have a PS5, then this video tells you "if you wanna play this game, the PS4 version on PS5 is a better experience, but Switch 2 runs well too".

Re: Nintendo States Its Intention To Acquire More Development Teams

DennisLofgren

I don't know about the legality of purchasing Game Freak, considering their three-way ownership deal of Pokemon between GF, Nintendo and Creatures. That would mean Nintendo would have a majority stake in the Pokemon brand and I'm sure there is something in the deal blocking either of the three from acquiring another one of the owners. But I think GF would benefit greatly from being directly managed by Nintendo and having access to their network of partner studios.

Re: Square Enix Confirms Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Runs At A "Stable" 30fps On Switch 2

DennisLofgren

@Lightsiyd

Hate to break it to you but this game would also run at 30fps if Nintendo made it. FFVII Remake (especially the Intergrade version) is a way more visually complex game than anything Nintendo has ever made. That's not a knock against Nintendo, its just that they target more stylized looks that can thrive on simple tech. This game is using more high detail and realistic methods to achieve its stylized realism.

Also if it was as easy as just run a program on your game to optimize it, we would have it and it would be widespread. A lot of people seem to think optimizing a game is just pressing an "Optimize" button or lowering resolution. But the reality is that optimization could mean a lot of different things depending on the game and how it was made. It usually stems from inefficiencies in how things were made and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. These teams have hundreds of people and (for example) every coder could've written 50 functions that weren't as optimized as they could be. Because during development, especially early on, optimization isn't the goal. The goal is to get everything into the game so you can tell if it works and is fun to play. So when you get much later in the development process and you have to optimize, you just have to go through everything by hand and look for things you can improve which is a very manual and tedious process.

Re: Developers Reportedly Still Struggling To Get Switch 2 Dev Kits

DennisLofgren

My theory on this is that Nintendo, in an attempt to try and replicate the Switch 1 success with Switch 2, studied the Switch 1 launch window and are trying to do everything all over again. Including the fact that nobody wanted to make games for the Switch 1 in the beginning.

I think Nintendo is therefore deliberately holding back dev kits to not overcrowd the launch period in order to recreate a similar flow of games coming to Switch 2 as back on Switch 1.

Maybe this made sense in the first couple of months but at this point dev kits should be everywhere. If devs start porting now, they wont even have anything ready to go for months anyway.

Re: Super Mario Party Jamboree Updated For Switch 2 And Switch (Version 2.1.1)

DennisLofgren

They need to add the increased resolution to the base game of the Switch 2 edition. I think its absolutely ridiculous that only Jamboree TV has increased res.

I would actually go as far as to say its false advertising. The game is called "Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV". Indicating that the base Jamboree was improved for Switch 2 while in fact it is just the regular unimproved game with a Switch 2 expansion.

Re: Nintendo Survey Asks Switch 2 Users About Their Experience So Far

DennisLofgren

@SpaceboyScreams They didn't lie about the screen being HDR, it technically is, but not in all the ways we generally think of HDR. It can accurately display more details in the lights and darks (well displayed in the fireworks demo in Welcome Tour) but where it lacks is brightness control since it only features one uniform backlight. Which sucks. But at the very least the hardware supports HDR and when inevitably an OLED model comes, it will be able to automatically support brightness control in all HDR supported games without any added work from developers.

As for the value of the console, its of course subjective. DK Bananza is coming in a month but apart from that, take this time to catch up on anything you missed! It probably looks and plays better now on Switch 2. I'm finally playing Pokémon Scarlet after quitting it due to the terrible performance on Switch 1, and I'm having a great time!

Re: Two Samus Figures Based On Metroid: Other M Are Making A Return In 2026

DennisLofgren

For anyone who has ever wondered "how is it possible Other M is as bad as people say it is? It was made by Nintendo and Team Ninja" its not. Its a great game held down by a couple big missteps in both gameplay and story departments. The only mistake in terms of gameplay is how it controls, which is with only a Wii Remote. A remaster could easily remedy this. Otherwise it is a much more 1:1 conversion of 2D Metroid into a 3D environment than Prime was.

As for the story, most people say its bad, but not for the right reasons. Most people just didn't like how Samus is portrayed like human in this game. With relationships, opinions and respect for others who she has history with. Most of it portrayed through an inner monologue. People say it changes her too much, but it really doesn't. Most Metroid games start with us reading her inner monologue, they just voice acted it here.

While I wouldn't actually call the story bad, I would say it could be better. But its mostly in how it wraps itself up towards the end with some strange plot choices. Most of the time, the game is an intriguing murder mystery that kept me hooked through the multiple playthroughs I've done over the years.

Play it for yourself, make up your own conclusions. This, mind you, could be said for a lot of the "internet hive mind" opinions.

Re: Accessory Manufacturer Genki Responds To Nintendo's Switch 2 Lawsuit

DennisLofgren

@Jeronan

They should offer refunds, yes. They do offer replacements in case of broken or lost shipments. I also prefer direct contact info but a form is fine, you can at least contact them somehow.

I'm not trying to argue they are some kinda saint of a company, just that they make good products that aren't dropshipped.

Nothing of what you're saying is what I asked for, which is proof that their products are dropshipped. How to prove that is finding identical products on sites like AliExpress that are literally the same thing but unbranded.
