@sanderev I just did a quick google search, and found two free art exhibits in my area.
I then expanded to a big city, New York City, and found they have free exhibits there.
Free art exhibits are absolutely a thing.
Edit: Also, if this was a pack-in with the Switch 2, perhaps could have created positive word-of-mouth, unlike the situation the game created with how they announced it and released it.
@BrokenCiv "Gone are they days of gaming sites actually reviewing a COMPLETE game." Those days have been LONG gone. It was a thing during the Wii U's launch, and probably even during the Wii before it.
Reviews should be read more as, "previews", unless they clearly state the number of hours played, imo.
@antisumo I'm curious, did you actually play and beat GoldenEye 007 on the N64 when it first released, and unlock all the cheat codes for it back then?
The ones I've seen complaining the most either never really played it, or only played it in a multiplayer vacuum with friends, they never really played the single player campaign (or, if they did, it wasn't on the N64).
For me, I got it day one when it released on the N64 and absolutely loved it then, and had a blast with it Thursday night, into the early hours Friday morning. I beat it using the default setup and a Pro Controller. Just wish I had the Switch N64 controller, for proper controls.
I would add Speed Limit to this list, because it takes players through a variety of pixelated gameplay styles from games of the past, but in one game, and it's pretty fantastic. It's not super long, but it has a speedrun mechanic to it if you like to attempt speedruns after you finish it.
I find this a bit odd, because Next Level Games behind made the NHL Hitz games, and Mario Strikers plays almost exactly like those games, just soccer instead of hockey.
How would they go, "Mario platformer soccer styled" as a concept, to, "Let's just use the NHL Hitz engine we're experts with and make it soccer game instead of a hockey game, and with Nintendo characters." is beyond me, but the NHL Hitz game engine was fantastic and those games were a blast, as was Super Mario Strikers, and I'm excited for the new one.
@nukatha WAIT, she was in the OG Stargate? Or, one of the spinoffs? I watched almost all of the OG back in 2019 and early 2020, but never quite finished the final season (need to get back to it). I really enjoyed it, but I haven't attempted to watch any of the spin-offs from it.
But, on this, I haven't played and beaten a LEGO game I think since LEGO City Undercover on the Wii U. If you are looking for a solid LEGO game, I would definitely recommend LEGO City Undercover, and it can be found pretty cheap these days with sales.
A Pro makes sense imo, just for better performance in Nintendo first party games. I believe it's happening, though knowing Nintendo, it won't be for another 10 years.
I think Nintendo will price it at $399.99, drop the OLED to $299.99, and keep the Switch Lite at $199.99.
I think Nintendo will treat the Switch like Apple does the iPhones, new models frequently. Little updates/upgrades, but the subscription model being a key from model to model, and the online is here to stay and the future for Nintendo on the financial side, along with the new games and hardware, as unfortunate as that might be for consumers.
Every publicly traded company is pushing some sort of "membership" it seems. Fast food restaurants with their apps/purchases, grocery stores, to even retail stores. Subscription models and "memberships" are what they want, and Nintendo has it going now with the Switch.
I've never played the Xenoblade Chronicles series, but have heard good stuff about it.
Mario Strikers might be a day one for us, as it will probably be a super solid local multiplayer game, + it has online, and I'm guessing is coming from Next Level Games.
I was glad to see Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, especially the fact it appears they're porting the Wii version which had the local multiplayer in it. I'm still not sure about Kirby, as I just have never gotten into that series, despite us owning several Kirby titles in the house.
Switch Sports was kind of, "Meh", to me, but I'm guessing it'll be a decent enough option, especially if the bowling is solid and tennis. Just hope the Joy-Cons work as well as the Wii Remotes did.
Splatoon 3 I'm guessing will be super solid, as they've had basically 5 years to work on this one, or at least flesh out ideas and make it better than the previous two, which were solid.
The Portal bundle I'm kind of interested in, because I've never played and beaten either of the Portal games, but with getting a Steam Deck possibly soon, I might be looking at that route for any of the Portal games.
The Metroid Dread announcement was met with good reception in our house from the Metroid fan. Boss Rush mode seems like a smart idea, and making the game easier, so that maybe more players finish it, I think is a good thing. Now, we just wait for the Metroid Prime Trilogy HD remaster news, with the Metroid Prime 4 news.
Still waiting on the New Switch/Super Switch/Switch Pro announcement, but realized that Nintendo often reveals or announces new systems after Directs like this.
I'm thinking like E3 last year, then in July they revealed the Switch OLED. Hoping that might be the case here, because if they're really stretching out the OG/OLED Switch until 2024, that's just odd to me as I feel like some of Nintendo's very own first party published games could run/look just a bit better if the system had a slight bump in power.
BUT, I'm kind of glad they didn't announce a New Switch, because that means I can just hold onto my Steam Deck reservation and have another awesome handheld/docked system in the house.
Overall, I thought it was a pretty solid showcase of games. Was there a single FPS game shown though? Oh, the one thing that SUCKED, I literally bought EarthBound on my Wii U 2 weeks ago, using some points I had on the eShop and NOW Nintendo announces EarthBound as part of the NSO..........
Copying/pasting/editing/adding slightly to my comment from the other post: I'm believing they will announce the New Switch/Super Switch/Switch Pro, and they are announcing it tomorrow just a few weeks before Valve releases the Steam Deck.
Valve announced the Steam Deck, what, 2 days before the Switch OLED pre-orders went live? Nintendo will announce the New Switch with either a 2/22/22 release date, or one random date in March, maybe alongside Kirby's launch?
The announcement will be just weeks before the Steam Deck is supposed to launch, and help keep positive press around Nintendo, while even potentially retaining some of their fans that might of been looking at going the Steam Deck route (myself).
I'm also hoping for Metroid Prime 4 news, and I feel at the very least a teaser trailer/first look might be done, as it's been 3 years since we last heard anything other than, "We're starting over with development on it."
BUT, if they don't really show anything on Metroid Prime 4, I'm expecting them to do a, "While work on Metroid Prime 4 continues, here's a look at the Metroid Prime Trilogy for the first time ever in full HD. It will be available for download on the eShop at the end of this stream.", and maybe do something like, "A Special Edition physical retail bundle will release with the New Switch".
Outside of that, I hope for maybe a new DK game announcement/teaser, since we haven't seen/heard anything from DK in a while.
I haven't really seen any of the most recent rumors, or when/where they originated outside of these articles, but apparently Mario Kart 9 is maybe in the works? I feel Nintendo does one Mark Kart game per home console, so if they show Mario Kart 9, I fully expect it to be for the New Switch, but I'm probably 100% wrong.
Also, it's been nearly 8 years since Mario Kart 8 released on the Wii U, so if the next one isn't ready, that's interesting, it probably is though, and Nintendo is just waiting for the right time. Again, I feel a new, more powerful, system is that opportunity, but I'm probably 100% wrong.
I think the New Switch will be $400, the Switch OLED will drop to $300, and the Switch Lite remains at $200.
I'm believing they will announce the New Switch/Super Switch/Switch Pro, and they are announcing it tomorrow just a few weeks before Valve releases the Steam Deck.
It's all part of the battle that's about to happen. Valve announced the Steam Deck, what, 2 days before the Switch OLED pre-orders went live? Nintendo will announce the New Switch with either a 2/22/22 release date, or one random date in March, maybe alongside Kirby's launch.
@JakedaArbok This is exactly why I'm getting it. My PC struggles with anything on the new side of PC gaming, BUT I also like to play on the TV a decent bit.
Right now, I plan on using the Steam Deck in a docked fashion, much like the Switch.
For the entry price, I'm hoping it's a solid entry level type of gaming PC, and one that I can also bring out and about if I choose (which, I doubt, but it's not a bad option).
Also, I really do like the fact that Valve is not a publicly traded company, even though I know they're partnering with one/some to produce this. I would rather go this route, than get something like the Xbox and support Microsoft at this point.
@Arawn93 I've been saying this for the last few months. Personally, I feel that a new Switch system, the Switch Pro/Super Switch, whatever they will call it will be released this year.
The Switch will be 5 years old next month, and I feel like the games they have scheduled for release this year would benefit from a more powerful system, even if it's not a huge jump.
I feel like Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4, Splatoon 3, and some others (Bayonetta 3, etc.) this year make good bridge games for the new system, where Nintendo can showcase, "These games run at 30 fps on the OG Switch, and will run at 60 fps on the Super Switch."
I'm wondering if we might get the new Switch announcement sooner, than later, and maybe it launches with/around Kirby in March, but I do feel that a direct tie-in with Breath of the Wild 2 at the very least will happen with it.
I think the Wii and Switch have helped show Nintendo the importance of a Zelda title for a new console's launch day.
@Arawn93 I'm sure they have that data, but the fact is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was included with the OG Switch during this time, so it's not really comparable imo, unless they are showing the sales breakdown here?
"And here's a humbling thought, in Q3 alone (1st October to 31st December) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 4.61 million units."
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was "free" with the OG Switch during this time, so not really humbling if Nintendo counted those Mario Kart 8 Deluxe copies as sales.
@Troll_Decimator Glad you mentioned Atlus, as that was years ago and I had completely forgotten about it.
The Persona series might be one of Sega's best-selling series right now then?
But, I agree on the "too many 'dead' IPs", I just think Nintendo has been teaming up with them for a decent while on the Mario & Sonic games, and I would imagine most of Sega's stuff like Sonic sells best on Nintendo platforms, but I could be 100% wrong there. Then there are things like the Bayonetta games that go back to Nintendo stepping in and helping fund the development of Bayonetta 2, and now 3, which makes them exclusive to Nintendo, while Sega still owns part of them? Or, something? Not sure the asking price for Sega, but I do think Nintendo just keeps partnering with Sega, until Sega can't play the publicly traded company game anymore because "investors" aren't seeing a return, and then Sega's like, "Hey Nintendo, would you like to own our IPs since we've worked together for a while now?"
Also, I literally learned of Sony buying Bungie from this piece, as that news went under my radar entirely... Weird times.
I've said Sega makes the most sense to me before in recent times, as I feel like they are struggling probably the most out of all the companies that could be bought out.
And, if you look at Nintendo's and Sega's relationship, it makes the most sense with Mario and Sonic, imo.
They've been teaming up for the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games titles for a while, but Nintendo just added the Genesis section to the Switch's Expansion Pack online out of nowhere really (was anybody expecting that section?)?
I feel like Sega is probably struggling the most with being a publicly traded company, and keeping up the, "More profits. MORE profits. MORE PROFITS." game they must play.
I do think Nintendo could really help the Sonic games shine, and give them the development time they need, but I'm not 100% sure it makes sense if Sega's finances show the majority of the Sonic games sell better on the other platforms, as Nintendo likes to keep games exclusive to their systems.
So yeah, not entirely sure who Nintendo might look at buying next, but it's probably few and far between, and they seem to just be fine with working with companies to produce Nintendo games for their systems, like the Hyrule Warriors games.
@HeadPirate I don't think Microsoft has commented that Game Pass is profitable, unless that's a recent update? When Phil Spencer was asked about it, he didn't say profitable, but "...Game Pass is sustainable.".
They're forward thinking with it, and want it to be like a Netflix, but the issue will be like Netflix in that it burns a ton of cash for content, and as more competition has entered that streaming market (Disney, NBC, Paramount, etc.), Netflix has started losing subscribers.
@Not_Soos Microsoft is a gigantic company, and gets tons of its money from government contracts. It's the last of the console manufacturers I would hope to have bought Activision, or any other gaming company, and really, knowing how they operated at the executive level in the offices from what has been reported, Activision's office environment would be about the same, so I guess Microsoft buying Activision makes sense?
@KITG_GROUP I am really curious (personally, I think they are, which probably means they aren't) if Nintendo will announce a Super Switch/New Switch soon, like maybe even before the end of January, for a March release. If I'm Nintendo, I pull a reverse Valve, and announce the Super Switch is releasing BEFORE Valve can get the Steam Deck out and shipping.
When did Valve announce the Steam Deck? Wasn't it like the 2 days before or the day before the Switch OLED pre-orders went live? It worked for me there. Took any interests we might of have in the OLED and basically dumped it in the trash.
We already own an OG Switch, so the OLED wasn't even really an upgrade for us because we play in docked fashion 95%+ of the time.
Now, reverse this, and say Nintendo says, "The Super Switch will be launching on 2/22/22, at $399.99", I actually might PAUSE on my Steam Deck and have to seriously think about keeping my pre-order for it.
If Nintendo doesn't announce it soon, I'm sticking with the Steam Deck.
@gcunit Nobody said (well, I didn't, did I?) the Switch is the same as the Wii and DS, just that Nintendo only has one system on the market now, so Nintendo isn't competing against itself now and having to produce games across two systems and selling two different systems.
Nintendo only has one system on the market now to develop games for, not both a handheld and also a home console. They're not producing games for two separate systems, they're producing games for one system, their market should be concentrated to the Switch.
Mobile competition has been around since the Wii days. The iPhone came out in 2007. The iPad came out in 2010.
I'm not saying that Product C in 2022 should outsell both Product A + B, but with Nintendo's own sales history of systems, it should outsell one of those products easily, because there is only one Nintendo product on the market right now.
If the Switch had failed, like the Wii U in terms of sales, what was Nintendo's backup plan? To keep the 3DS going? I doubt it. I think Nintendo had plans for Switch price drops (like with the 3DS after launch), and quickly, if things didn't go like they hoped, but sales did fine and an initial price drop wasn't needed.
@ChromaticDracula Shadows of the Empire was the first N64 game I bought after I got my N64 as a Christmas gift. Loved it then, and it's still super solid.
I replayed the Boba level just 2 weeks ago, when The Book of Boba Fett released, and I replayed the entire game last year, I think in May, not 100% sure. The jetpack was done really well, and the level designs were pretty fantastic with letting you explore for the hidden "extras" in the levels.
The game is still absolutely fantastic, imo, and I feel it would benefit greatly from a remake, mainly one with proper lighting. Some of the areas on my TV were SUPER dark, and I had to turn the brightness all the way up, and even then, it was crazy dark and I would just mash the walk button and HOPE to get out of the areas.
Edit: Also, on the "non-canon" part of Shadows of the Empire, I do think they could solve a few of the non-canon issues pretty easily, because the game wasn't big on animated cut-scenes, but instead used still images for the N64 version. They could replace the still images with still images of canon characters in those scenes (I have a few that would work well, I think), and the replace the names in the text files accordingly.
@KITG_GROUP I was about to say the same thing. This is Nintendo's first generation in a long while to not have multiple systems out, the Switch should be doing better than the Wii at the very least.
I think the key here is price points. If Nintendo can maybe get a Switch down around $150, then maybe it would help more, but I'm not sure they care if their profits are meeting/beating the previous years.
I'm kind of curious what might happen if Nintendo announces a Super Switch, one that is fully backwards compatible with the Switch, and has a game like Wii Sports with it at launch with it? But, any "new" system that isn't a continuation really, would probably just be considered another "new" system, which means sales would be splintered overall, and the Switch doesn't do as well as the DS side.
Not sure what/if they do to keep the sales momentum up outside of more software, and price drops on the hardware side to get it further under the $200 range, again, not even sure they care about that at this point.
@Mince What if Nintendo just condenses the market slowly? So, they announce and release the "Super Switch", and say it is 100% backwards compatible with all Switch games, right? No loss there, and it's a benefit for all Switch owners to upgrade over time.
They release the Super Switch at $400, Switch OLED drops down to $300 (replacing the OG model) still, and Switch LITE still at $200. Over time, they just simply replace the older models with the Super Switch model, because, aren't those chips going to stop being produced soon according to NVIDIA? Not 100% sure, but that's what I thought I had heard?
The one issue I see for them, is if they have figured out someway to produce the Super Switch Nintendo games like Metroid Prime 4 on one cartridge and the OG Switch could read it and a Super Switch could read it as well? Not sure what that might require on the software side/hardware side, and if that is even possible yet, but I'm thinking if there was an actual solution here, it would be less confusion at retail space: "Buy one game, it plays on either system." Instead of the, "This game only plays on THIS system." type of deal.
The Super Switch is coming out this year, 2022, with Breath of the Wild 2. Nintendo wants Breath of the Wild 2 run at 60 fps, and the Super Switch is the solution.
The Super Switch will be 100% backwards compatible with all Switch games, but will run NEW Switch games at better FPS, and higher resolutions.
I'm guessing we will get the announcement soon. Super Switch at $400. Switch OLED at $300. Switch Lite still at $200.
Games that will feature the better FPS and resolutions will be: Splatoon 3 Bayonetta 3 Breath of the Wild 2 Diddy Kong's Racing Metroid Prime 4
maybe even Kirby's game in March.
The Switch OLED was nothing but a stop gap for the holidays, so Nintendo could have more chips made for the Super Switch this year.
Super Switch releasing with Breath of the Wild 2, at the minimum, if not before then in March with Kirby?
@fafonio From the rumor mills on the internet, and what I can conclude based on looking at everything, it appears that there were leaks from inside Monster Games regarding Nintendo and contracts Monster was working on for Nintendo.
Nintendo takes leaks extremely seriously, and there's other evidence/rumors to this from reports regarding companies like High Voltage (supposedly was working on the OG Splatoon, somebody leaked they were working with Nintendo, Nintendo gave them a few weeks to find/fire the leaker, they wouldn't/couldn't, and Nintendo canceled the contract?), and from what it looks like, the rumors here are probably mostly true?
Somebody at Monster leaked some info, Nintendo found out there was an issue, Monster either wouldn't/couldn't figure it out, and their contracts were canceled.
ExciteBots was absolutely awesome on the Wii, and I was hoping to see more craziness like that from them, but when you look at the timing of the leak/rumors, it would appear Nintendo cutoff all ties with Monster because of the leaks, and Monster immediately went back to making NASCAR games, which is something they hadn't done since they started working with Nintendo.
"These captures were likely taken on PC, PS or XB (Image: SEGA)" Umm, you mean Super Switch/Switch Pro? By next year, we will of course have the most powerful home console system Nintendo has ever released ready for the holidays, right? 16K support in handheld. 32K support while docked. Bundled with Nintendo's new Nintendo DS 32K TV, that folds up like a picture frame on the wall when both panels aren't needed. All for the low, low, low price of $4,999.99
Considering what happened with the "news" of the leaked Pokemon game and another site, I'm wondering if NintendoLife will be silenced and quiet after they get their cease and desist for using Nintendo's name in the site's title?
Don't bite the hand that feeds you....I think is the phrase?
@RupeeClock My guess is that Nintendo probably isn't even manufacturing the standard model anymore, and will use the holidays to clear inventory of it. My guess is they only have the Switch Lite (maybe for now), and the OLED in production.
@SwitchForce I don't know about the Switch versus Steam Deck on price, only because we're talking Nintendo here. They do what they want. If the market reacts poorly, like with the initial 3DS price, they might correct quickly with a price drop.
I just think the $400 price might be what they're aiming for with a "Switch Pro", because they're pricing the OLED at $350. I think they're setting any expectations of a higher powered Switch to be priced more.
If they announce the Switch Pro is $400 and it has Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4, Splatoon 3, etc., all running better on it than the OG Switch, I think they'll try to make the case for the $400 price. Will the market be okay with that? Not entirely sure, especially if the Steam Deck takes off and has great word-of-mouth after its release, but it's going to be interesting moving forward.
And on the 4K side, I was just saying that for me personally the 4K isn't a big factor, as long as it runs the games at better fps.
@Ulysses I think the Switch Pro (whatever they call it) is coming like the N3DS, and that they will use games like Breath of the Wild 2 to showcase its better performance. Breath of the Wild 2. Metroid Prime 4. The next Donkey Kong. Probably even games like Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, and others next year.
They can showcase them with something like, "These games will run at 60 fps, versus 30 fps.", and that alone will be enough for many. It doesn't even have to be 4K for me, if the performance is simply better.
I am a bit curious if they're even producing any more of the base unit now, which I doubt they are, and I'm guessing it's just the OLED and Switch Lites they're making now. I think they'll use the holidays to clear inventory of the old base units, keep the OLED at $350 for the holidays, then drop the OLED to $300.
I'm hoping the Steam Deck might cause a bit of a disruption, and maybe make Nintendo think about pricing going forward, because I reserved a Steam Deck because of its price and don't even plan on picking up/looking at a Switch OLED until our base unit has issues.
Now, if they announce a Switch Pro at $400, will I want it day one? Probably not if the Steam Deck works fine, and our OG Switch is still running fine, even if performance is better. Will we get it if Metroid Prime 4 is on it day one? Unfortunately, we probably will, because Nintendo knows games sell systems, and they're holding their "big" cards for the Switch Pro, I believe.
An upgraded Switch makes sense to me, even just in terms of Nintendo's own first party games and their performance. Breath of the Wild 2 at 60 fps, instead of 30 fps. Splatoon 3 at 60 fps, instead of 30 fps.
If the reports are saying late next year, that's a bit sad, as I was hoping for an earlier 2022 release...specifically 2/22/22, and maybe that can still happen?
I do think Breath of the Wild 2, Splatoon 3, and other 2022 titles like Bayonetta 3, and others like Metroid Prime 4 whenever it's ready, will be showcase titles for the Switch Pro, to help make the "sale" of the system and its better performance.
If this doesn't have a Mine Cart Madness roller coaster, I'm going to short Nintendo and Universal, and probably find a team of lawyers for a class action lawsuit on behalf of DKC fans everywhere.
@Duncanballs Thanks for the feedback! I've been watching some Cruis'N Blast streams the last few days, and was thinking if this raced like that one, but with more crashes, that could be really cool.
I like arcade type racing games more than simulation, but I haven't really given a simulation racer a good try in a long while, maybe the genre has improved?
If this races like Burnout (at least 3, from my experience), that's awesome, but if it also plays more like the old Destruction Derby games, that could be interesting too. Not sure where this will fall?
@Ravenmaster I'm looking forward to the Steam Deck's release, and was so glad Valve announced it before the Switch OLED's preorders went live. While I wasn't leaning towards getting the OLED, or even really thinking about it, the Steam Deck helped seal that decision quickly. I'm hoping the Steam Deck helps disrupt the market some, and at least might help the Switch Pro be more reasonably priced next year when it releases.
I play our Switch docked almost entirely, and I'm hoping the dock for the Steam Deck, at least the official one in the works, functions well and supports the system in a decent manner. I'm planning on playing it docked a lot, but if it's as comfortable as the Wii U GamePad, I'll probably be playing it in handheld mode as well. I rarely play the Switch in handheld mode, because I find its form factor uncomfortable.
I thought the price was going to be an issue, and wrote this before they announced the price/release: "If Nintendo fails the Switch at launch, it's a hard road to recovery, like what happened with the Wii U.
I think the Switch needs to be under $200 for major success and for it not to end up like Wii U, but maybe Nintendo will try $250 for launch to get all the hardcore fans' extra cash early, then drop it to $200 for the holidays? Maybe the Switch will be more powerful than the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One combined with Duck Tape, and Nintendo will say they are going for the higher end market to justify a higher price? Maybe, but I don't think so.
Second, Nintendo's partnership with Nvidia and Nvidia's own Shield Tablets that have released on the market since 2013. When was the last Nvidia Shield tablet released? November 2015. What was it priced? $200.
The Nvidia Shield K1 has an 8", 1080p screen. The Nintendo Switch? 6, 720p screen. The Nvidia Shield K1 did not include a controller, but I am assuming the Nintendo Switch will include the Joy-Cons, and of course the docking station, in a base bundle.
Sony dominated the PS2 era, and they controlled pricing. Nintendo better not forget that. It didn't matter the GameCube was $100 less at launch, because Sony dropped the PlayStation 2 down to $199.99 about six months after the GameCube released, and that basically sealed the deal for Sony winning that generation. Will Nintendo really gamble and release the Switch at the same price as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One? I don't see how that is a recipe for success, even if they have exclusive games and big exclusive third party titles. I think they need to "hit the ground running" with the Switch, and not stop.
Resident Evil 4, and all those Capcom deals on the GameCube. Didn't matter."
@larryisanassman Yeah, we have a 256GB card in our Switch, but still have about 75GBs left on it. We don't download a lot of huge games, but the compression that Nintendo does, and others, on the Switch is pretty awesome. I just don't think it will be a huge issue, and I think most pre-ordering the Steam Deck know what to expect.
@larryisanassman It's no different with the Switch though, especially if you're going the digital route (which Steam is) with games (some are only offered that way). I have used either SD cards or external HDDs since the Wii/Wii U days.
I don't think this will be a problem for the target audience here.
@rosemo Depends how you look at some of the things you mentioned.
Here's my truths about the Steam deck: 1. I don't care much about the screen, because I'm not super interested in the handheld gaming aspect. Our Switch is docked 95%+ of its time in the house. We have a base Switch from launch, and we don't plan on upgrading to the Switch OLED. There's no reason for us. I plan on using this in a docked fashion a lot. 2. Personally, I find the Switch to be uncomfortable for handheld gaming sessions. I found the Wii U GamePad to be more comfortable. From what I can see, it appears the Steam Deck is closer to the Wii U GamePad's form factor, than the Switch's, and I'm glad for it. 3. The performance between the $399 model and the $529 model is the same. Directly from the site: "There is no in-game difference in frame rates or graphics quality between the three models." But, will it run games better than the Switch? From what we know, yes. 4. I'm most interested in using this as a docked device though, so I'm on the "notify me" list whenever they have info on the dock available. If it's much more than standard docks already out, I'll skip it and just get one already on the market for less probably. 5. The Switch OLED is $350 at launch, plus another $60 for a game, plus another $80 for an extra Joy-Con set or $70 for a Pro Controller for comfortable local multiplayer. I don't think most Steam Deck owners are getting this for local multiplayer, but I could be wrong. So, $500 minimum for the Switch OLED, game, and controllers for local multiplayer? Plus the online subscription if you're playing online multiplayer? 6. If you own any wireless game controller, you should be good to go without needing to buy extra, as they can be synced with the Steam Deck. The only thing I think most will end up getting extra would be a dock for it, which I'm hoping is less than $50. So, $450? 7. If the Switch Lite could be docked and streamed to the TV, and/or used with a monitor like the Steam Deck, I think it would be the same comparison. The reason I won't buy a Switch Lite, is because it can't be docked. But, even if not, you have to buy the Switch Lite for $200, a game for $60 (assuming 1st party Nintendo title), and then an extra controller or two, $70 or $80, and/or the online multiplayer service for it as well. You're close to $400, without the ability to dock it.
I think Valve might be trying to go for the "low end" PC market, and I'm here for it. If anything, I hope this might help the GPU market see price reductions, and help with some of the crazy prices we have seen the last year+. I'm glad to see a non-publicly traded company attempt something like this, and I think this is Valve trying to help carve/keep some of their Steam market, as competition is heating up on that side of things with every other game service out there now (GOG, Epic, Xbox Game's Pass, etc.).
I have one reserved, and I rarely play games on my PC. Last time I did and finished one, I think was May 2020. I think this gives me an easier way to play my Steam library, and for less than $500.
I enjoyed Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii a lot. Did everything in the game, and finished it on all the difficulty settings so I could 100% it? 101%? Whatever all that was. But, it was my only Metroid game that I ever remember finishing.
Our oldest son is a HUGE Metroid fan, and he has been requesting that I play through the series. Today, I plan on firing up the OG Metroid and giving it a start. From there, I plan on going through the entire series.
@datamonkey If they weren't a publicly traded company, this would/could be more likely to happen. But, as a publicly traded company, they almost all go this (stupid, imo) route of stock buybacks that prop up the price. Apparently, stock buybacks used to be illegal until 1982.
Now, what could Nintendo have done with $900 million instead? Nintendo has around 6,000 employees worldwide (5,944 according a quick google search), and let's say they divided that amount equally among just their employees, how much would each employee get?
900,000,000/5,944 = About $151,413 per employee (if my math is right).
Now, as an employee, would you rather your company buyback stocks, or would you rather your company give you a one year bonus of $150,000?
Just finished this game, and I'm curious how many hours it took them to finish this the first time? The game provides that data, and my first time playing through was absolutely insane. I died. Died again. Rescued a bee. Died 100 more times. Rescued a bee. Died more.
The title for the game is 100% spot-on, and I don't think I will ever actually beat the, "Impossible Lair". The Not So Impossible Lair was challenging enough....
I doubt the majority of owners of this one have finished, but would love to see statistics on it.
I'm interested in the Steam Deck for a few reasons: 1) It's like the Switch with portability, but looks more comfortable (hopefully less hand-cramping, and more like the Wii U GamePad in design) for handheld gaming sessions. 2) Works with docks for getting it on TVs quickly and easily. 3) Valve is a non-publicly traded company (right?), and I see this as a way for them to go around Microsoft and the PC/console side of things. They're releasing it without Windows, bypassing the need for a Windows license, but they're keeping their base plugged directly into it. 4) At $400, it allows me to play some of my Steam games better than my PC and it allows me to move it around more easily than my desktop PC. 5) Am I part of Steam's target audience? Yes, I think I am. I have a Steam account, but rarely play my PC games on my PC, because I prefer sitting on the couch/chair. Could I get a gaming laptop or upgrade my PC? Yeah, but I like this form factor a lot, ever since the Wii U GamePad, but I also really like that I can/will dock this around the house on TVs, and use it for even streaming PC games more easily without having to upgrade my PC. 6) PC gaming for under $500? I think it's a gamble, because it's Valve's first "console" really like this, but it's a gamble I'm will to take. 7) My plans for the Steam Deck are to probably play it from a dock on my TVs and using a controller the majority of the time, but hopefully I'll enjoy it handheld mode some as well.
@Entrr_username Yeah, the key is in the wording right at the end... "...at this time."
Not that there isn't another model being worked on. Not that there won't be one released next year. Just no model, "...at this time." "...have no plans for launching any other model at this time."
Switch Pro, whatever they call it, will launch when Breath of the Wild 2 does, that's my belief. Maybe BotW2 is getting a slight development delay, and they'll release the system earlier with the likes of Splatoon 3, but I think BotW2 will be it's big launch title in 2022, but I could be 100% wrong.
@HeadPirate I have two reserved already, so there's that. Until it releases next week though, I can be playing it on our Wii U, and Wii.
Do I think this will happen though? Absolutely. (Which means it probably never will.) Why wouldn't it? Not sure about the visual upgrades and what not, but I do think the Metroid Prime Trilogy makes sense on the Switch, as it has sold extremely well and this would be almost like more, "free cash" to Nintendo on those that double-dip on the games.
But, I am one that does absolutely believe a Switch Pro is still happening, just not until BotW2, Splatoon 3, and/or something like Bayonetta 3 are done and ready for launch with the system next year.

Re: Review: Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour - Surprising, Delightful, And You Know Where It Belongs
Re: Review: Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition (Switch 2) - A Superb Port Of An Incredible RPG
@BrokenCiv "Gone are they days of gaming sites actually reviewing a COMPLETE game."
Those days have been LONG gone. It was a thing during the Wii U's launch, and probably even during the Wii before it.
Reviews should be read more as, "previews", unless they clearly state the number of hours played, imo.
Re: Round Up: Here's What Switch Online Players Think Of GoldenEye 007 So Far
Re: Best Pixel Art Switch Games
I would add Speed Limit to this list, because it takes players through a variety of pixelated gameplay styles from games of the past, but in one game, and it's pretty fantastic.
It's not super long, but it has a speedrun mechanic to it if you like to attempt speedruns after you finish it.
Re: Super Mario Strikers Originally Started Out As A Platformer
I find this a bit odd, because Next Level Games behind made the NHL Hitz games, and Mario Strikers plays almost exactly like those games, just soccer instead of hockey.
How would they go, "Mario platformer soccer styled" as a concept, to, "Let's just use the NHL Hitz engine we're experts with and make it soccer game instead of a hockey game, and with Nintendo characters." is beyond me, but the NHL Hitz game engine was fantastic and those games were a blast, as was Super Mario Strikers, and I'm excited for the new one.
Re: You'll Have To Pay To See Baby Yoda In LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
@nukatha WAIT, she was in the OG Stargate? Or, one of the spinoffs? I watched almost all of the OG back in 2019 and early 2020, but never quite finished the final season (need to get back to it). I really enjoyed it, but I haven't attempted to watch any of the spin-offs from it.
But, on this, I haven't played and beaten a LEGO game I think since LEGO City Undercover on the Wii U. If you are looking for a solid LEGO game, I would definitely recommend LEGO City Undercover, and it can be found pretty cheap these days with sales.
Re: 'Switch Pro' Trends On Social Media After Massive Nvidia Leak Reignites Speculation
Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2022 Nintendo Direct?
Re: Nintendo Direct To Air Today, Wednesday 9th February 2022
Copying/pasting/editing/adding slightly to my comment from the other post:
I'm believing they will announce the New Switch/Super Switch/Switch Pro, and they are announcing it tomorrow just a few weeks before Valve releases the Steam Deck.
Re: Feature: Our Predictions For The February 2022 Nintendo Direct
I'm believing they will announce the New Switch/Super Switch/Switch Pro, and they are announcing it tomorrow just a few weeks before Valve releases the Steam Deck.
It's all part of the battle that's about to happen. Valve announced the Steam Deck, what, 2 days before the Switch OLED pre-orders went live? Nintendo will announce the New Switch with either a 2/22/22 release date, or one random date in March, maybe alongside Kirby's launch.
I'm also hoping for Metroid Prime 4 news, and I feel at the very least a teaser trailer/first look might be done, as it's been 3 years since we last heard anything other than, "We're starting over with development on it."

Re: Random: Here's The Nintendo Switch-Like Steam Deck Compared To Some Other Stuff
Re: Nintendo Reconfirms Release Windows For Major Upcoming Switch Games
But, I'm probably 100% wrong.
Re: Metroid Dread Is About To Become The Best-Selling Game In The Series
@Arawn93 I'm sure they have that data, but the fact is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was included with the OG Switch during this time, so it's not really comparable imo, unless they are showing the sales breakdown here?
Re: Metroid Dread Is About To Become The Best-Selling Game In The Series
"And here's a humbling thought, in Q3 alone (1st October to 31st December) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 4.61 million units."
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was "free" with the OG Switch during this time, so not really humbling if Nintendo counted those Mario Kart 8 Deluxe copies as sales.
Re: Talking Point: Who Is Nintendo Going To Buy? Don't Be Shocked If The Answer Is "Nobody"
Re: Talking Point: Who Is Nintendo Going To Buy? Don't Be Shocked If The Answer Is "Nobody"
Re: Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard, Now Owns Call Of Duty And Crash Bandicoot
Re: Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard, Now Owns Call Of Duty And Crash Bandicoot
Re: Talking Point: As Lifetime Switch Sales Jostle With The Mighty Wii, Can It Possibly Catch DS?
Re: Talking Point: As Lifetime Switch Sales Jostle With The Mighty Wii, Can It Possibly Catch DS?
Re: Aspyr's Star Wars Games On Switch Are Currently Up To 50% Off (US)
@ChromaticDracula Shadows of the Empire was the first N64 game I bought after I got my N64 as a Christmas gift.
Re: Talking Point: As Lifetime Switch Sales Jostle With The Mighty Wii, Can It Possibly Catch DS?
Re: Analyst Predicts 2024 Release Date For Next-Gen Nintendo Switch Successor
Re: Analyst Predicts 2024 Release Date For Next-Gen Nintendo Switch Successor
The Super Switch is coming out this year, 2022, with Breath of the Wild 2. Nintendo wants Breath of the Wild 2 run at 60 fps, and the Super Switch is the solution.
The Super Switch will be 100% backwards compatible with all Switch games, but will run NEW Switch games at better FPS, and higher resolutions.
I'm guessing we will get the announcement soon. Super Switch at $400. Switch OLED at $300. Switch Lite still at $200.
Games that will feature the better FPS and resolutions will be:
Splatoon 3
Bayonetta 3
Breath of the Wild 2
Diddy Kong's Racing
Metroid Prime 4
maybe even Kirby's game in March.
The Switch OLED was nothing but a stop gap for the holidays, so Nintendo could have more chips made for the Super Switch this year.
Super Switch releasing with Breath of the Wild 2, at the minimum, if not before then in March with Kirby?
Re: The Studio Behind Excite Truck And Excitebots Has Been Acquired By iRacing
@Orpheus79V that was part of the rumor/leaks I think, and part of Nintendo's plans for what they wanted to do with the Switch launch. NintendoLife covered part of it a few years ago on the Diddy Kong Racing side: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/06/rumour_was_monster_games_working_on_a_sequel_to_diddy_kong_racing
Re: The Studio Behind Excite Truck And Excitebots Has Been Acquired By iRacing
Re: Gallery: Here Are Six New Screenshots Of Sonic Frontiers, Coming To Nintendo Switch Holiday 2022
"These captures were likely taken on PC, PS or XB (Image: SEGA)"
Umm, you mean Super Switch/Switch Pro?
By next year, we will of course have the most powerful home console system Nintendo has ever released ready for the holidays, right? 16K support in handheld. 32K support while docked. Bundled with Nintendo's new Nintendo DS 32K TV, that folds up like a picture frame on the wall when both panels aren't needed.
All for the low, low, low price of $4,999.99
Re: Doug Bowser Comments On The Battle Against Joy-Con Drift, Says Nintendo Are Making "Continuous Improvements"
@J-Fox I literally was scrolling to type this exact thing. Like, we're not even to its 5th year yet, does he have a time travel machine?
Re: Steam Deck, Valve's Switch-Like Handheld PC, Gets Pushed Back To 2022
This just confirms the Switch Pro is releasing 2/22/22 and Nintendo will beat Valve to the market at $399.99 and Breath of the Wild 2 is ready....
Re: Nintendo's Switch Exclusive Metroid Dread Is Already Being Emulated On PC
Considering what happened with the "news" of the leaked Pokemon game and another site, I'm wondering if NintendoLife will be silenced and quiet after they get their cease and desist for using Nintendo's name in the site's title?
Don't bite the hand that feeds you....I think is the phrase?
Re: Round Up: Here's What The Critics Think Of Nintendo Switch OLED
@RupeeClock My guess is that Nintendo probably isn't even manufacturing the standard model anymore, and will use the holidays to clear inventory of it.
My guess is they only have the Switch Lite (maybe for now), and the OLED in production.
Re: Patent Reveals Nintendo Is Working On Upscaling Technology
Re: Patent Reveals Nintendo Is Working On Upscaling Technology
Re: Rumour: Developers Have Reportedly Been Working On "4K Switch Games"
Re: It's Official, Super Nintendo World Is Getting A Donkey Kong Expansion
If this doesn't have a Mine Cart Madness roller coaster, I'm going to short Nintendo and Universal, and probably find a team of lawyers for a class action lawsuit on behalf of DKC fans everywhere.
Re: Wreckfest Brings Destructive Demolition Racing To Switch This Fall
@Duncanballs Thanks for the feedback! I've been watching some Cruis'N Blast streams the last few days, and was thinking if this raced like that one, but with more crashes, that could be really cool.
I like arcade type racing games more than simulation, but I haven't really given a simulation racer a good try in a long while, maybe the genre has improved?
Re: Wreckfest Brings Destructive Demolition Racing To Switch This Fall
If this races like Burnout (at least 3, from my experience), that's awesome, but if it also plays more like the old Destruction Derby games, that could be interesting too. Not sure where this will fall?
Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?
Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?
I thought the price was going to be an issue, and wrote this before they announced the price/release:
"If Nintendo fails the Switch at launch, it's a hard road to recovery, like what happened with the Wii U.
Where am I getting the sub-$200 price idea from? First, a rumor from 2015. You can read it here:
https://kevincallahangames.wordpress.com/2015/06/29/exciting-times-coming-next-year/
Second, Nintendo's partnership with Nvidia and Nvidia's own Shield Tablets that have released on the market since 2013.
Glad that didn't matter, and that I was wrong.
Re: Barry The Bunny Brings "Challenging" 2D Platforming To Switch For Just $5
@NinChocolate Was it Kung Fu Rabbit? I own that one, and played it a decent bit, but not sure I ever finished it....
Re: Round Up: First "Hands-On" Impressions Of Valve's Steam Deck - How Does It Compare To Switch?
@larryisanassman Yeah, we have a 256GB card in our Switch, but still have about 75GBs left on it. We don't download a lot of huge games, but the compression that Nintendo does, and others, on the Switch is pretty awesome.
I just don't think it will be a huge issue, and I think most pre-ordering the Steam Deck know what to expect.
Re: Round Up: First "Hands-On" Impressions Of Valve's Steam Deck - How Does It Compare To Switch?
@larryisanassman It's no different with the Switch though, especially if you're going the digital route (which Steam is) with games (some are only offered that way). I have used either SD cards or external HDDs since the Wii/Wii U days.
I don't think this will be a problem for the target audience here.
Re: Random: Here's What The Nintendo Switch Looks Like Next To Valve's Steam Deck
@Snaplocket It's interesting, because Steam has more than 100 million monthly users, and Nintendo has sold just under 90 million Switch units.
Sounds like a great opportunity for game developers to try and be on both.
Re: Round Up: First "Hands-On" Impressions Of Valve's Steam Deck - How Does It Compare To Switch?
@rosemo Depends how you look at some of the things you mentioned.
Here's my truths about the Steam deck:
Re: Fans Celebrate All Things Metroid As The Series Turns 35
I enjoyed Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii a lot. Did everything in the game, and finished it on all the difficulty settings so I could 100% it? 101%? Whatever all that was. But, it was my only Metroid game that I ever remember finishing.
Our oldest son is a HUGE Metroid fan, and he has been requesting that I play through the series. Today, I plan on firing up the OG Metroid and giving it a start. From there, I plan on going through the entire series.
Re: Nintendo To Spend Up To $900 Million To Buy Back Its Own Shares
Re: Review: Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair - A Delicious Mix Of Donkey Kong And Zelda
Re: Valve Responds To 'Switch Vs Steam Deck' Comparisons, Insists It's "Going After" A Different Audience
I'm interested in the Steam Deck for a few reasons:
1) It's like the Switch with portability, but looks more comfortable (hopefully less hand-cramping, and more like the Wii U GamePad in design) for handheld gaming sessions.
Re: Nintendo Denies Claims It'll Make Increased Profits With Switch OLED, "No Plans" For Other Model
@Entrr_username Yeah, the key is in the wording right at the end...
"...at this time."
Not that there isn't another model being worked on. Not that there won't be one released next year. Just no model, "...at this time."
"...have no plans for launching any other model at this time."
Still hoping for some new DK game.....
Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Trilogy For Switch Ready To Go, According To Industry Insider
