Re: Video: Why Didn't Square Enix Port The Kingdom Hearts Collection To Switch?

Brink

Nah, I don't believe all of that reasoning. If Kingdom Hearts keeps being remade and ported to every other console in existence, then it can be ported to Switch, and likely profitably.

However, I think the real reason goes to the performance requirements and, as he stated, the cartridge size. The Switch can't run PS4-grade games. This is why I hope we'll see a proper port on the Switch 2.

Re: Streaming Giant Netflix Acquires Its First Video Game Developer

Brink

@HeadPirate I'm very glad you got a load of deals from streaming and DRM-protected distribution platforms. I have zero problem with that! In fact, maybe someday I'll take advantage of the same.

Why can't physical media coexist though? I own lots of books. I like the fact that I own them and can hand them off to anyone and be certain they will last without a random megacorporation intervening in my business. I don't get why you insist to frame it as, "Physical media is stone age, LOL. Streaming is the only way!"

I'm mainly concerned about game preservation. As many a defunct online game service and MMO foretells, even the best and biggest won't be around forever. And if it is, do you really want its preservation (and, ahem, pricing model) to be in the hands of a soulless corporation whose only initiative is money? It will eventually be that way for some games, since that is the goal of business: Make MORE money, which sometimes means squeezing more out of the consumer through shady means. I mean, just look at Gacha. I don't trust these companies. Look at Stadia too! "Pay for an expensive streaming service AND pay full price for games!" Ugh! 🤢

Also, your argument that it's less expensive is true for now. But it will not likely be true forever. Netflix is a perfect example. Now there are a gazillion streaming services hoarding exclusive content which put together costs more than cable did. Now it's also getting to where you can't even own the content either, meaning someday one of my future daughter's favorite childhood movies might be lost to bitrot or will be stuck behind an exorbitantly priced paywall when she gets nostalgic in 30 years.

All of this can be easily avoided too! Emulation means that so many files can be saved and stored with ease. The latest games have massive file sizes, sure, but you can still store them if you have the memory. Memory gets bigger and cheaper with time. Back in my dad's day, he was impressed at the upgrade from kilobytes to megabytes. Now we're moving from gigabytes to terabytes! Talk about progress 😆

Re: Chibi-Robo! Inspired 3D Platformer Misc. A Tiny Tale Confirmed For Switch

Brink

I adored Chibi-Robo on the GameCube. I remember the days when I was a kid and 100% completed the game.

I played Park Patrol but wasn't able to get into it as much. Then all the following stuff looked like a poor direction for the series. Except that Japan-only DS game which looked like it was more like the original game. Bummer that we never got that one.

This one looks like a Chibi-Robo type game that I could really sink my teeth into! 3D platforming sounds like the best direction a game like Chibi-Robo could take to make the gameplay itself more interesting and compelling. As long as the character stories are in it and are fun, this is looking to be a better successor than we could have hoped before!

Gotta love indie devs!

Re: Video: The History Of The 'Silhouette' Super Nintendo Emulator Might Be An "Elaborate Hoax"

Brink

@Tourtus Oh man, that would be the absolute best. It's never even occurred to me because of how console-centric they are. They have been releasing new games on smartphones, but I don't think that translates to porting evergreen titles on PC. Someday, hopefully!

But that someday likely isn't anytime soon, sadly. They recently had a massive hit with NES and SNES Classic Minis, and they are also able to sell 10-year-old Wii games at a full-price mark-up with QoL improvements and moderate graphical updates. I wish it made the most business sense for them to put their retro games on PC, but that sounds like a 10-20 year plan, if that, not a 3-5 year possibility. Might as well not get my hopes up.

Re: Random: Don't Worry About Masahiro Sakurai's Health, He's "Okay" Right Now

Brink

After Ultimate, it's difficult to imagine anymore iterations on the base formula of Smash Bros. I'd prefer an Ultimate port with a handful of character additions next time rather than building an entire game from the ground up. Ultimate is just perfect basically.

Either that or a totally different spin on the base gameplay. That would probably upset fans, and maybe me as well. But it would be fun to watch the gameplay evolve around a much more limited cast of characters, like 10-20. I see no problem with it if we have Ultimate as the "traditional" style.

Re: Talking Point: As The Fan-Made 2D Metroid Prime Game Is Shut Down, Where Do You Stand On Nintendo's Takedowns?

Brink

@Juicy_MV True, although that doesn't address my point. It's not that Nintendo has no legal right or precedent to take down fan projects. Absolutely, it is. However, many people say it is required for Nintendo to take these projects down or else they risk losing control and ownership of their IP. If that is true, then Sega is either brazenly careless about that risk or the legal ramifications for allowing fan projects to proceed are not as bad as people think. Sega doesn't seem to be hurting from their decision to be so open. Meanwhile Nintendo is incurring tons of bad publicity by taking projects down.

Which company is making the better move?

Not sure. I tend to fall of the side of the consumer rather than the company, however.

Re: Talking Point: Every Pre-BOTW 3D Zelda Now Has A Remake, But Which Is Best?

Brink

People are underestimating the improvements to Skyward Sword HD. Sure, there are some things Nintendo probably should have done better. Late game fetch quests should probably have been simplified a la Wind Waker HD. Maybe a little flash could have been added to the visual upgrades to dazzle more, yet the style of SS is so particular that I bet such an effort might mess with the purity of the style. Despite these, it seems to me they've changed enough about the actual gameplay that it's the most improved experience of all the remakes. I'm no SS apologist, it's my least favorite 3D Zelda by far. But the amount of QoL updates raises the quality of the game from "tedious & preferred to skip" to a fun ride.

Re: Final Fantasy VII And VIII Remastered Are Coming To Switch In One Physical Pack

Brink

Pumped!!!! I always wanted this since the beginning!!

This really should be a trilogy cart with FF IX included. If Witcher 3 with ALL DLC can fit it all without a download... C'mon Square. Quit holding out on us.

Perhaps a worldwide release with all 3 on a cart with no download will come. Till then, this is a great step in the right direction!!

Re: Square Enix Confirms Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Will Be A Digital-Only Release

Brink

I'm hoping it's been Square Enix's plan to release all 3 FF PS1 games physically, only on a "trilogy" cartridge! That would make the most business sense, since the 3 titles separately are not full retail price. All together they will add up to about that magic $60!

Seems to be the trend. The best indie game makers especially release digital then wait to release physical until all the content is ready to put on the cart complete. I prefer that to "partial digital release" like what happened to poor Mega Man.

And I almost exclusively buy physical too! I refuse to give into the "digital only" stuff, because I want to actually own my games.

Re: Doug Bowser Says Nintendo Is "Closely Watching" Streaming Technologies

Brink

@dres Wowie, this was an aggressive message. Especially since you assume that I live in the States and insult the country.

The point was that there are countries that do not have this infrastructure, and that includes countries not in the U.S. that also play games. Nintendo is Japan-centric and they have this in place. Maybe some European or other countries also have incredible wi-fi and data.

But hey, even in Japan, I bet you there are some areas with dead spots. What do you do if you live deep in the mountains and have cruddy wi-fi/data? This is just a reality right now. Maybe this will change 10-20 years from now.

Re: First 4 Figures Reveals Its Fourth Sonic The Hedgehog Resin Statue

Brink

Bahahahaha!! Beautiful but not my hobby, way too much for me. I would hope that people who are really into figurine/statue collecting would find the price appropriate.

I would love this, but I could also buy a Genesis and all the classic 2D Sonics for that price. Probably all the Dreamcast and Saturn consoles and Sonics too.

Re: Nintendo Switch Lite Officially Revealed, Launches This September

Brink

Great move by Nintendo.

New Nintendo 3DS XL is around $200, so pricing the Switch Lite any cheaper would be a bad marketing move.

However, once 3DS line is through, I bet this will drop $50 in price, alongside the normal Switch. Then you get closer to the inexpensive handheld vision for Switch Lite, where everyone owns one due to the cheaper price.

Re: Nintendo Posts Job Listings For Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Sequel Dungeon Designers

Brink

I might be done 100% completing Breath of the Wild by 2021, so good timing I guess?

Was thinking it might be a 2020 release, but oh well. We need to enjoy our games. Live in Contentment vs. Living in Hype Land.

I would like to play/replay a lot of Zelda games leading up to that release, which will take a ton of time. I also have a backlog the size of a barge for all sorts of other games. Time to get to feasting on these games!

Re: Review: Super Mario Maker 2 - The Last 2D Mario Game You'll Ever Need

Brink

@kepsux Sorry about that. I will edit my comment.

Most talk about the NSMB games as "samey" and they'd be right. They are good games, though! The first two NSMB games were innovative takes. The last 2 were more of the same, only a bit more refined.

What 2D Mario needs is a new art style and brand new worlds to explore, a la Odyssey. The level editor is great, but no replacement for the main games.

Re: Review: Super Mario Maker 2 - The Last 2D Mario Game You'll Ever Need

Brink

I really love NintendoLife. I'm sorry though, I really do NOT like that title.

Imagine for a moment that 2D Mario is your favorite game series. Then being told that no more games will be made for the series since a level editor for the past games exists.

If Nintendo did this for 3D Mario or Zelda, giving us no new games, just level editors, we would all be understandably upset.

I like the level editor, but there is plenty of room for innovation that a level editor cannot do.

The New Super Mario Bros. series became a pretty samey take on 2D Mario. Yet they still sold gangbusters for the first few titles. Imagine the same level of innovation and care given to a truly fresh 2D Mario, similar to Ori or Cuphead or Hollow Knight. 2D Mario would have loads of wonderful new titles for everyone to enjoy. I want a 2D Mario that expands the universe of Mario similar to what Odyssey did.

Re: Nintendo Promises More SNES Classic Edition Stock Is On The Way

Brink

I could not believe it. I walked into Walmart after work at 6 pm. The nice lady in the electronics section said they probably didn't have any. Then we looked and 2 were sitting right in front of me.

Thank whichever article it was that alerted me to Walmart's 3-day restock at 2 pm. I walked out of that store fist-bumping the air.
