Finally, a new first-party game for Switch! As a Wii U and Switch owner, this was my most anticipated Nintendo game even before Switch launched. At this point, I had assumed it would be released for the next hardware. If it runs at 60fps smoothly on Switch, I won't complain.
@NeonPizza @LEGEND_MARIOID My understanding is that Monkey Ball is challenging when controls are 1:1 and frustrating when they are not. Is that correct? What titles would you recommend to someone that hasn't played any?
@Not_Soos I agree. Vicarious Visions still exist, but they are called Blizzard Albany. I hope that they are working on Tony Hawk and Crash. Phil Spencer said that he would like those IPs and Spyro to be worked on, but I don't know if that's for him to decide after the big acquisition.
If any other publisher did what Nintendo does regarding pricing of ports/remasters, everyone would bash them. The most vocal Nintendo fans tend to justify everything that they do, so Nintendo gets their way always. Moreover, they have released three consoles during the last generation (3DS, Wii U and Switch) and started porting Wii U games in 2017, selling them full price without any kind of discount even after merging the NNID and Nintendo accounts. Contrarily, the real remakes like what Capcom does deserve the new release price tag. Ninten-ports-don't.
I'm honestly excited about this. I have Majora's Mask on N64 and 3DS and, while I prefer the N64 game because the 3DS version is a watered-down version, the original game has an awful frame rate, even the Virtual Console version on Wii and Wii U and the performance feels even worse on modern TVs. Old TVs dealt with that better. Actually, the CRT TV I played the N64 game on was able to smooth the frame rate miraculously and the added lag was bearable.
@floxi Not magic but reality. It does run 60 fps smoothly on mine. I don't know what version you tried, what custom OS and version you run and how it performed on yours. I only know what my eyes see after having completed the game 100% with all the Skulltulas.
@Lizuka I know that not everybody likes that style. I didn't like how Octopath Traveller looked on Switch, but on Series X in 4K it looked much more better and I loved it, not just crisper, more beautiful graphics but also chests were easier to find.
@120frames-please Yes, I mean that, I was wondering if someone ported that Majora's Mask Ship to Wii U like they did with Ocarina of Time. I have a Switch but not hacked.
The trailer screamed trilogy to me and I remembered what the series creator teased in 2021, that was reported here on NL. Then, I read Midori's words that someone linked. Moreover, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are Square Enix's more important IPs and the older titles are too old to not be remade, as those lazy mobile/Switch releases have shown. I will be buying these on Xbox, but happy that they will be available on all platforms. I would also like IV, V, VI, VII, VIII and IX, but at least I have those on DS/3DS and are easily playable, although I only have played IV so far. 🤣 I thought that it was more difficult but better than Final Fantasy IV, that I also bought for DS.
Anybody knows about a Wii U port like the excellent Ocarina of Time Wii U port? It's incredible having it right there next to the official 20fps version, running in 60fps and HD.
@Ironcore It's also worth mentioning that the graphics of the original game (60fps) have aged perfectly fine, even more obvious if you are able to output at a higher resolution.
@fenlix That's one possibility of course, but the noticeable lack of "III" in the trailer and what the series creator teased back then (link provided), makes me think otherwise. But hey, perhaps you're right and we only get III, with or without the "III".... I think that they are going to release a trilogy/bundle.
@batmanbud2 "I've seen some people your age say Mario 3 hasn't aged well."
What age do you mean? There's a big gap between GameCube and NES. Yes, I think that the older Mario games are better. Quality seemed to decrease after Wii.
@Daggot Right, the remake of III was announced in 2021 and the engine was created years before for Octopath Traveller. That and the wording of the trailer makes me think that it's not just the third game, not to mention what the series creator teased in 2021. On top of all this, Dragon Quest is one of the main Square Enix properties and the original games are too old to not be remade for current platforms. The first one I played was IV on DS and I loved it.
They listed "Switch", but maybe it's for Switch 2 and they can't stamp the real name of Nintendo's next console yet.
@Not_Soos Fair comments! The Thousand-year Door and Superstar Saga are the funniest Mario RPGs and the script is what makes them stand out, so I would have never touched the best part of any of them.
"I really need to get a life, btw. I just beat the game yesterday, and I've already put FOURTY TWO hours into it. I don't even know how that's possible."
😮 Wasn't it released four days ago? I thought beating Senua's Sacrifice (10h 7m) and Hellblade II (8h 43m) was too much playing for four days LOL.
@DarkFighter The old controller button layout was perfect and the A button being the main and big button on GC and Wii made controls intuitive then.
Nintendo should add settings in the game's menus because since SNES and other systems (like Xbox) where the main button is the one on the left, some people never got used to how DS, 3DS, Wii U and Switch made the right button the main button.
I know you can map buttons in the console menu, but it's better when you are able to customise at least the front buttons within the game, like Breath of the Wild (partly). Running and jumping will always be like SNES taught me and DS reversed that.
@AlexanderDaniels Funny (and sad) that the definitive version is the Gamecube version: uncut and 60fps.
The news in this case is that the trailer reads "Dragon Quest HD-2D: The legacy begins" and that means more than "III", in my opinion. So today, they not just confirmed the platforms Xbox, Windows, PS5 and Switch (2?), but also teased that it's not "III" but "the legacy", like the series creator teased in 2021:
I think that Retro's DKC games weren't as good as Rare's, but Donkey Kong 64 was not Rare's best platformer, so I voted for a new 3D game. Of course, I would love Diddy Kong Racing 2 (and a remake of the first game) if Microsoft and Nintendo agree on terms.
I would like the new Donkey Kong game to be a proper 3D platformer if developed by Nintendo, because Super Mario Odyssey was more about exploring dull environments. It would be great fun if it included the original DKC stars: DK, Diddy, Dixie and Kiddy... and Kremlings, obviously!
I know someone that works at Nintendo. I am able to share with you some of the new experiences that we will be able to enjoy during the first years of Switch 2, but please keep it secret or else Nintendo would incarcerate him.

@N00BiSH I understand. It was a good idea because Mickey was not that popular in video games and films at that time, so it could have been the Fantasia of video games, but it was not.
@cyrus_zuo Poor thing. So, it's not just me who thinks that the camera is the worst thing about it even if it's not the only bad thing about the game 😅.
@Kekshook Just three weeks to go and perhaps Digital Foundry will make a video about it. I hope that it turns out well and that you'll enjoy it. I tried the demo on Xbox One X and the frame rate was a bit choppy, but I should give it another go on Series X. The game seemed original and interesting.
@Kekshook I don't want to raise your expectations but heck, I think that Microsoft asked their studios, "Which of these x games would run well on Switch?" (EDIT: I meant Pentiment and Grounded).
@Kekshook I think that it will run and look fine on Switch. It seems that they selected these two games carefully (EDIT: I meant Pentiment and Grounded).
@ottoecamn Some people like to be absurd about everything, history included. I always wonder what they had done back then.
@IronMan30 I'm checking the news here and I'm happy that the sequel is going multiplatform because I haven't played it on Switch and will play this definitive version on Xbox. Similarly, on PX are reporting the Xbox games that are coming to Switch. I think it's perfectly fine.
@Mgalens I agree and that's why I prefer to play these on Xbox. However, I wonder if Nintendo and Microsoft will finally agree about Diddy Kong Racing being re-released. That would be huge.
ahhh every time i see controversy on this site the tagged handle banjo- isn't far behind. Naturally i cant read his vocal drivel tho as he was added to the douchbag block list a while ago. Done wonders for my mental wellbeing 😂.
@Rhum17 I wouldn't pay much attention to the polls. Pure Xbox has now more PS fanboys than Push Square 🤣. The internet is full of misinformation and toxicity about Xbox, so I'll answer with facts and official data.
1. There are many Game Pass subscribers, but they sell even more. Around 10-15 percent of Xbox's content and service revenue comes from subscribers. Game Pass is profitable for the reasons I posted above. Xbox users buy lots of games, but digitally. Sony's financials for Q2 of 2023 stated that 4% of their sales are physical. Only Nintendo remains relevant in the physical market. Personally, I don't trust Nintendo and I buy my Switch games physically.
2. Distant third if you mean consoles sold this generation, but they are ahead of Sony and Nintendo in gaming revenue after the ABK acquisition, and they were already ahead of Nintendo before the acquisition. The number of consoles sold no longer means higher incomes like in the 90s. Sony is struggling financially and changing their strategy regarding online games and PC ports on day one.
As I always say, Nintendo is the luckiest company of this generation, well, last generation because Switch belongs to the last one, selling millions of full-priced Wii U ports from the same generation on weak hardware. The Mario Kart 8 port sold 60.58 million. For the record, I bought Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and Switch, all DLC included on both.
3. Most importantly, Xbox is just not consoles but Windows and Cloud. This is important because their business on PC and console is all part of the same ecosystem and OS. They confirmed yesterday that they have more developers than ever before building for Xbox consoles. The success of Xbox is split between consoles and PC, with Cloud being the fastest-growing market.
Like you and I said, Xbox is the most reliable, they respect our digital libraries, our physical libraries, even. I buy as many Xbox games as I want and I know they aren't going anywhere. Heck, we even get free remasters. Nintendo is exactly the opposite, so I avoid buying digital Nintendo games and any multiplatform game, although I bought Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled on Switch and Series X as an exception (and they look like completely different games).
@bring_on_branstons "If the XBox brand is around in 6 or so years (it's reported that if GamePass isn't profitable by 2030 their current way of doing business is unsustainable) how will MS be making games available?"
@Rhum17 "Xbox is already struggling as a brand outside of Gamepass."
Where did you read that bs? Microsoft had confirmed previously that they pay $1 billion per year for including games that they don't own and they get around $5 billion per year from Game Pass subscribers. That means $4 billion per year from Game Pass, not including the sale of software, DLC, etc. Around 10-15 percent of Xbox's content and service revenue comes from subscribers, so imagine how much money they make with sales, leaving the 34 million subscribers aside. They are also ahead of Sony and Nintendo in gaming revenue and active players. Gaming is now Microsoft's third largest business, bigger than Windows.
I understand your worries but the only one that is doing what you fear so much is Nintendo and partly Sony. Xbox is respecting digital libraries and even physical purchases all the way back to the original Xbox discs, whenever it's possible via backwards compatibility. Nintendo makes the same users buy the same games even in the same generation, even after merging the NNID and Nintendo accounts. Sony has limited backwards compatibility, not all the games are available to purchase and download on PS5 services and they have removed digital content that people have paid for. To date, Xbox is the most reliable console platform from a consumer's point of view.
