I was able to get in to the beta for Pokemon Go thanks to a friend, but I played enough to know the game really isn't for me. It feels like a waste of time when I play it, though other people's mileage may vary. On an unrelated note, my parents found out about it from my aunt and were under the premise that people were walking around neighborhoods "taking pictures of figurines in the bushes". It had difficulty stifling laughter while explaining the app.
@JaxonH "Why is day one DLC bad? Is it just bad because? No. It's been wrongly labeled as automatically bad but in reality all day one DLC is not bad. Some is, some isn't."
I have to disagree with you. If the intent of DLC is to add additional content to the game to enhance the experience for a consumer, then it makes no sense why at launch it would be excluded for any other reason than to make more money off the game. It's content that could have very easily been left on the disc but is instead separated, forcing you to shell out more money to get the complete experience. In this case, the DLC had already been made and was available in Japan since launch, but they wanted to extricate more money from consumers and thus left it as premium content. This is why I am against the practice, it's the developer just inflating the price of the full game by taking content that could have been in the $60 retail release and charging extra for it. In some cases I could accept the argument that small developers need to make extra to cover their costs because of low projected sales, but Nintendo has ample funds to spare.
Hey look, Mojang recreated the Hunger Games servers that have been around for years and labeled it as a new mode. This strikes me as uncreative, but it's something I guess.
@edgedino The game felt really bland to me and I hardly enjoyed it. I don't like the execution of mega evolutions, the region itself was uninteresting with few memorable locales. There were only around 70 new pokemon; I like the new designs, but they really should have taken the time spent on mega evolutions and used that on new pokemon. The difficulty was all over the place, and the rivals were pretty poor compared to past characters. Overall, this game is the reason why I stopped buying Pokemon on launch day (something I had done since the release of Platinum) before ORAS came out.
I like Rowlet the best of the three starters (it's so cute), but I usually try to reserve judgement until I can see the final forms. As nice as the trailers were, I'm still undecided on picking up the game after getting burned on X. I'll wait until reviews/new gameplay is revealed before I decide to pick this up.
I think it's a little unfair to sing the praises of the wiimote because of the few games that implemented its controls excellently, because most games didn't. It worked wonderfully for things like rail shooters, Metroid Prime, and Skyward Sword, but for every one of those games there were five more which just sloppily implemented the concept (shake the wiimote for a smash attack? Really, SSBB?). When nintendo nixes the gamepad, I'll wait for an article examining how well it worked for Pikmin 3 and Splatoon and claiming Ninty should have retained it. I love the new options for playing games an alternative controller can provide, but if it's the default than I'll inevitably feel burnt out from all the games which utilize the controller to poor effect.
The villain strongly reminds me of Relius from Blazblue, with that hair and mask. This game seriously comes out in April? I've been putting off playing Bravely Default for too long now. I guess I've been playing too much monster hunter.
One question: whit is Nintendo's support going to provide for the event? More setups or funding for Genesis, or just a gesture of goodwill towards the community?
It took this long for a port and it has a higher price no extra functionality over other versions? I have to wonder why anyone would buy this edition when the original PC version has better customizability for the same price. It is by no means a taxing game, most PCs can run the game decently. Never was really interested in this to be honest, but now this can be used as an example of "Nintendo fans only buy 1st party" if this underperforms. I think I'll save my cash for Fast Racing Neo and XCX.
Europe really needs too spend more than 5 minutes coming up with a splatfest theme in the future, this is just getting ridiculous. Now, as for which side I would pick... http://i.imgur.com/fqWeXbH.jpg
The desert island escape mode seems interesting, but everything else looks boring to me. I think I'll pass on this title. At least this spin off is closer to the actual source material than Metroid soccer.
This is a prime example of putting the cart before the horse. While it's all well and dandy for Comcept to try and create a large franchise based around Mighty No. 9, the game's quality is what is going to determine its popularity; not some animated cartoon and certainly not amiibo support. It really shows they have their priorities backwards when they tried to launch another kickstarter for a different game before the first was even released. Personally, I'm waiting for reviews to decide if this is worth picking up.
Not that I even cared about the removed outfits, but it's just a silly decision to remove them. Nintendo seems to be forgetting that the target audience for this game is mature enough to not be bothered by a few skimpy outfits; the ESRB rating is already M, it's not like the outfits would bump it up to AO. It's not a big loss for me, but the fact that they are censoring something so insignificant is an acceptable cause for worry.
@DiSTANToblivion If you don't like tier lists, you'll have a rough time with most competitive games as they eventually crop up as people assess the game over time. I mean, sure, anyone can win a game if they are sufficiently skilled, but some characters simply lack the tools others have and are more of a handicap to you. For example, Ganondorf is generally considered a "bad" character because he isn't on the same footing as many other characters because of his slow speed and difficulty dealing with quick opponents/projectiles. If he can get in his punishes can be devastating, but you have to put in significantly more work to actually get in for those hits. This is why grapplers are some of the worst characters in fighting games as a general rule.
Good for those who enjoy competitive for this game. While I personally loathe the competitive scene for this game, it's still nice to see other people taking major tournaments besides Zero.
@GLA By "playing chargers" I can only assume you mean playing against chargers, because anyone who has used them can tell you they have some crippling weaknesses. Well it's true that they are difficult to dislodge if they can create a solid lockdown, this only works with team support. It is imperative for a charger to stay well away from opponents' ink, because they are nearly helpless in close proximity. Consider their rate of fire; if someone gets in close and there is no time to charge, you are using a weapon with probably the worst rate of fire in the game. The E-liter and vanilla splat charger can somewhat mitigate this by throwing burst bombs or splat bombs and hoping for the best, but the kelp splat charger, custom E-liter, squiffers, and the bamboozler don't have this option and rely solely on uncharged shots. It's very difficult to win confrontations with uncharged shots, and you probably only have a chance against guns with wide variation in their shot arcs (i.e. ss jr. and aerosprays) or if your opponent has the aim of a blind grandmother. Something I'd also like to add is that it's difficult for a charger to actually hit someone if they are on a high platform and the opponent is right underneath, because of charger shots only dealing damage when shooting something directly in the line of sight (falling ink will do nothing). Conversely, every other gun shoots in an arc which will hit someone on a high perch. Lastly, I'm not sure what you mean when you say "they can get you from places that you should be safe from". Are you proposing they alter the guns' range for each map, put up invisible walls, or just sharing something that makes you salty?
I saw this thinking "Oh cool, maybe there will be some nice incentive to get it bundled." Nope. Instead, Nintendo gives meager savings, so why get the bundle to begin with? If you don't care about Mii Fighters (which I'm sure is a modest portion of the community) it's a total waste of cash to grab the costumes. I was impressed by the great deals offered by the Mario Kart 8, Splatoon (it was free dlc lol), and Hyrule Warriors but the Smash DLC is a total rip-off.
I honestly don't know why you would use an inferior version of the E-Liter. I like using the default variety, but the custom just has a worse sub and special. Squid Beakons are pretty bad; super jumping is very risky to begin with and you are giving up your position to the other team right when you plant a Beakon. In fact, I think the Beakons are pretty much useless outside of Tower control where they can be used as a kind of shield to absorb a few hits. The burst bombs on the default e-liter are a great way to deal with close-range opponents when you can't afford the time to charge a shot. The Kraken as a special is very situational; It's great if you are near a group of opponents since they can be easily dispatched, but if there are opponents still around then you need to use half of your invincibility time to get back into your ink. The echolocater on the other hand is fantastic for the default e-liter since it reveals the positions of all enemies, making it easier to charge a shot and wait for them to move into an unsafe position. It also assists your teammates and can even alert them to an enemy who would have otherwise ambushed them. The only real flaw I see with the echolocator is that it does very little to anyone using cold-blooded as one of their perks.
TL;DR The default E-Liter has a more versatile and better subweapon and special than the E-Liter Custom. The new scoped version is nice, but I think I'll stick with the regular E-Liter Scope.
I've never been very interested in the Mario Sports titles, and this does not look like it's going to reinvent the wheel. I'll wait for the reviews before I even consider picking this up.
I've been wary of the DLC for this game ever since it was announced. Why would I care about the skins for Mii Fighters when I don't use the character? I would much rather they released things like more pallet swaps or even alternate models for the characters (like Alph and the Koopalings). Similarly, the stages seem really lazy to me; these are just the stages from prior games with no visual upgrades whatsoever. Just look at what the developers of Project M did to some of the N64 stages! I think most of these stages should be free, because $2 a pop is a rip-off. The characters are good though, but I don't have any of them besides Mewtwo because I haven't been playing the game enough to justify the cost. I personally like the Splatoon method of DLC much better (even though the game really needed the extra content to justify the $60 price tag).
it's not like it was a one-off NES game like Ice Climbers. Snake and Sonic were not at all obscure when Brawl came out either, and Pac-Man and Ryu are pretty well known. Even my grandparents know of Pac-Man and Street Fighter V is coming out relatively soon.
@John_Enigma I agree with what you are saying but your examples simply don't make sense. In Smash 64 Captain Falcon was unheard of, there was F-Zero X released for the N64. It would be more valid to say that Samus was more obscure since there was no Metroid game on the N64. At the time of Melee's release the Fire Emblem series was about to receive a seventh entry. Even if it didn't have any games in the US
@Zombo I think you might have unwittingly linked the wrong post? Because Kosaki here talks about how unbalanced turf war is for competitive play, which I entirely agree with. The first two minutes are little more than a formality, because ALL games of turf war are decided in the last 30 seconds and last minute (to a lesser extent). If the other team gets a triple kill or something during the last 30 seconds it can easily cost you the game. So please, no competitive turf war. This is the reason why we have splat zones and the other ranked modes.
As for competitive Splatoon as a whole I'm not to optimistic. While it's great that Nintendo is directly sponsoring this they won't give us voice chat among friends, a spectator mode, or LAN support. All these will be difficult to navigate around if Splatoon is going to grow a large competitive scene.
