Up until recently, amiibo had been exclusively first party affairs. There are already dozens of the evasive figures available for a wide array of Nintendo franchises, but the question always remained: will amiibo ever be utilized by third parties? This was answered by a rather surprising reveal by Yacht Club Games, where it was confirmed that a Shovel Knight amiibo will soon be proudly joining the ranks of Nintendo's range of figures. Naturally, this makes one wonder what other studios are interested in having amiibo made for their characters.
While this question may still be mostly unanswered, it has recently come to light that Keiji Inafune – Creator of Mega Man and its upcoming spiritual successor, Mighty No. 9 – is looking into how he can implement amiibo in future games he works on. When asked about amiibo in an interview with USGamer, Inafune said that it's something Comcept is looking into and that they would be interested in it if given the opportunity. The quote also seems to imply that it's being considered for Mighty No. 9, but let's hope that Comcept saves it for the sequel; this game's been delayed enough. Here's the relevant quote:
Inafune: That's definitely an option for us, and if we have the opportunity to do it, then we'll definitely take the chance. And also, we know for a fact a lot of our backers are Nintendo fans, because we ran a platform survey [for Mighty No. 9], and we see how many people are choosing Nintendo hardware. So it's definitely something we have to look into.
What do you think? Would you like to see this in Mighty No. 9's inevitable sequel? What other third party amiibo would you like to see some day? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Put Beck in Smash and unlock a Megaman alt skin.
I doubt he'd delay MN9 for amiibo support. Anyways, glad to see another person into amiibo support. First, Yacht Club Games, now Comcept. The more, the merrier, in my opinion
Slow down Inafune, you haven't even released a game yet.
I wouldn't mind if he thinks of a good use for amiibo. However, I wouldn't say that it being used just to unlock an otherwise impossible to obtain item would count as a good use.
Whatever. Rather get the overdue Mighty No.9 released before corncerning yourself with future amiibo compatibility. Just saying....
@arronishere i think the article means producing amiibo which rules out ace combat and one piece
Can you actually release the game first?
"Mighty No. 9 is delayed to work on a full scale toys-to-life system, with amiibo compatibility for Nintendo platforms and a portal and NFC tech for other systems. Also, please crowdfund these new figures."
It would not be in the interests of third parties to implement amiibo functionality unless they produce amiibo of their own. Sure, they might get a few fanatical amiibo collectors buying their games because some amiibo collectors might feel as if the only way that they can get their money's worth from amiibo is by buying every game with amiibo support however insignificant it may be… but the number of such fanatics is likely to be negligible.
@StephenYap3 You know what they say...
Would be swell if Keiji Inafune was interested in finishing games....
@JusticeColde Even pornstars can't believe it.
But yeah, I just wish Inafune would just release the damn thing.
Can we just get the damn game, first!?
@arronishere You skipped a word. The word was "recently". Guess you skipped "Up until" too.
I wish slightly mad used their polls to determine how many Nintendo fans wanted project cars.
At the rate Inafune is going, Capcom is going to release a proper Megaman game before him. Seriously, just release the game!
Well, hes certainly not interested to get the game out first.
This has to be one of the laziest and slowest releases that was not meddled with cancelations or dev switches.
The question is...why ?
Its a tried and true game formula, nothing that has to stay very long in the planning stages. Its "just" a slightly different MegaMan game.
Next, it doesnt look all that special, thus it cant be technicalities that is slowing it down.
For something, that was announced with so many trumpets and horns, that was planned to be made into a franchise from 0-100 in .01 seconds, that "needed" a cartoon, merch etc from the get go, before people got a chance to see if the characters are even any good to be featured in a cartoon....its release is a total train wreck.
Never before have i been turned from a giddy fanboy to someone who has lost all interest what so ever.
Just get the game out. You can add this later as a free update...
...How about he finishes a game first before he talks about future implementations...
amiibo implementation? you mean like using the mega man amiibo to implement mega man into the game? that would rule. lol
@MitchVogel: I disagree, they should implement Amiibo functions in the current game. Can't take that long anyway. But even if it would - I'm always for giving game developers the time they need to make their games as great as possible. I didn't even notice/realize that Mighty No. 9 is delayed (I don't even know when the original release date was supposed to be), because I don't care. I don't look up game XY every week just to check the release date. It's finished when it's finished. So I just keep myself busy with other interesting things and wait until NintendoLife or any other website posts a review which reminds me that the release date is imminent.
Of course I know that's not how everybody sees it, but I think it's the best way to do it. Artists should get as much time as they need. Otherwise the result will be less desirable. I don't even think we as consumers/fans have the right to critisize them for taking more time. It's their project and they will know best whether the game needs more time to become really awesome or not.
I would love to play Legend of Zelda U and Starfox Zero right now, but I know I will be much more happier to play a perfect and polished version when it's released. So until it's released (or some new material like a gameplay trailer shows up), I don't give a **** about the game. It just doesn't exist yet. For me, the hypetrain starts shortly before the release.
But of course there would also be a simple compromise for Mighty No. 9: They could add amiibo functions with an update.
This is a prime example of putting the cart before the horse. While it's all well and dandy for Comcept to try and create a large franchise based around Mighty No. 9, the game's quality is what is going to determine its popularity; not some animated cartoon and certainly not amiibo support. It really shows they have their priorities backwards when they tried to launch another kickstarter for a different game before the first was even released. Personally, I'm waiting for reviews to decide if this is worth picking up.
Amiibos of Beck and the other Mighty Numbers? Do want. Don't even hafta be amiibos, I'd be glad with affordable action figures.
@3MonthBeef The irony is, that Mighty No.9 satisfied an urge, that has been left untouched ever since Capcom gave up on MegaMan all together.
Fans went nuts after MN9 was announced, because it might not be what they wanted, but it was close enough.
They could have hit the market, where it wasnt saturated, but in fact, almost starving. And they focused on unlayd eggs. On a cartoon show that portraied characters we didnt even knew as "off-character"...however they managed that. They drew criticism because one of their community managers / concept designers went RadFem and banned backers from the forums for disagreeing with her "Beck could be female" ideas.
They showed promo art that looked better than the actual game (especially the 2D sprite renditions). They raised eyebrows by running one kickstarter campaign after the other, although they made more money than they actually asked for. The List goes on and on.
They had it all: The right time, the right place and the right idea. And look what it all turned out to be...hot air and a bag of dogs.
What is their current portfolio ? Nothing. A bunch of collaborations all with less than stellar success. A "Remember MN9 ? We make something similar but for MegaMan Legends 3" campaign for Red Ash, which failed and had to be picked up by a publisher to be saved. Future unknown.
And ReCore, where i dont even have an idea what its supposed to be.
@DarkmarkUnited Tbh, I completely forgot this is coming to 3DS! Thanks for pointing that out.

RELEASE
THE
GAME
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mighty No. 9
Release date: The year 2020
Of course MN9 hasn't been released yet, their development team's community manager position was filled by an SJW who hijacked their development processes and community outreach. She even tried to impose her own image onto the main character, and tried to change the characters to suit her tastes. (She was probably someone's girlfriend, she had never even played a MegaMan title before... Possibly Inafune's girlfriend.)
Their studio has been dealing with so many internal problems, including firing the community manager due to her insurrection (which prompted many people to get their money back through their banks, since neither Kickstarter nor Inafune would do it), it's no wonder they're so far behind schedule. Amiibos shouldn't even be on the radar right now. They have more deep-seeded issues to deal with.
