Sega is putting the rubber to the road again with Out Run coming to the Nintendo 3DS. The arcade title was originally released in 1986 featuring an arcade cabinet that had the appearance of the game's slick sports car; it's the third in the 3D remaster project's second series and the eleventh overall. In an interview with Sega Blog, Yosuke Okunari of Sega of Japan, and Naoki Horii, the president of M2 - the team in charge of the port - talk about the transition the game went through being ported to Nintendo's latest handheld.
From a game design standpoint the issue that stood as a roadblock for the team was how to improve upon the original, while maintaining the classic foundation. The framerate became the major point of contention in achieving this. The original arcade machine ran at 30 FPS, which was different from other titles of the time. In response to this, M2 has managed a feat of technical wizardry, allowing only the game's roads to run at 60 FPS while all other objects whiz by the player at 30 FPS.
Not only will the cars race down the tracks in a smoother fashion, but also there will be more to see.The 1986 classic ran a 4:3 display, which has been updated to widescreen for the 3DS release. This upgrade reveals previously unseen parts of the screen and makes the entire picture clearer as a whole.
The game, and all the memories associated with it, will release on the Nintendo eShop on 12th March. Are you going to download this one? Do you like when companies bring classics to new platforms?

Can't wait to listen to Cruising Line when I play this.
I think Nintendo has quite a bit to learn from SEGA in regards to the 3D classics line. Much better support and title selection than Nintendo
BUY BUY BUY! I have been waiting what seems like 2 years for this one. I've been hoarding 10 bucks in the Ehop but spent 1.99 this morning on the zombie game.
@HueyLewisFan I'm pretty sure Nintendo has pulled the plug on 3D classics. They have nothing coming and Haven't released a 3D classic in a very longtime. I just hope Sega Keeps the train rolling with 3D classics. Their 3D classics are as good as some new 3DS retail games. I would love to see Shining in the Darkness converted to a 3D classic with a Map system
I'll be downloading it again, having bought it way back on the 3DS LL.
It's gonna be amazing on the New 3DS with the 3D effect.
The Sega 3D classics are among the best titles available on the handheld.
They are, by far, the most complete and definitive versions of these games.
They run like they should, they incorporate any regional differences, every setting you could wish for...They are just phenomenal.
Sega would do themselfes a MAJOR favor if they M2 free reign over their library of games to convert.
Finish the Sonic and Streets of Rage series, add some Fan Favorites like the Shining Series and people will be spending their money left right and center.
OMG this would be fantastic. I loved the sound track. But on the Wii u PLEASE!!!
I have a bad feeling that this won't be released in Australia. It hasn't been issued a classification yet (unless they forgot to add it to the database) and its due for release in a week. I love Out Run and I'll be super pissed if they leave Australia out. =(
@KB90 : I'd rather see a brand new Out Run game on Wii U (similar to Out Run 2006: Coast 2 Coast).
i might not get this one, but i love their 3d classics series so much. if it ever went on sale i would get it probably. u know what game would be awesome is roadblaster. i think thats a sega game. bubble bobble would be awesome to finally get on the 3ds too. i think they already have it in japan.
My body is ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Windy: YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!! Nintendo needs to notice Sega's many awesome examples! I highly doubt we'll ever seen another Nintendo 3D classic again.
I LOVE OUT RUN!! If I had to make a top 20 all time favorite video game list Out Run would be in it!!! Day 1 purchase next week!!
Meanwhile WHEN THE HELL IS SEGA DOING SOME CLASSICS ON WII U???
Virtual console please sega!!!! What are u waiting on??
It sounds from the interview that that is not the case. Rather, they converted the whole game to 60 FPS bit by bit.
wooo I've been waiting for this, maybe one day they'll do a virtual boy game
Body = Ready
@bofis The article says March 12th.

I'm tearing up right now.
@technotreegrass oh man, duh, thanks!
I am so excited for this, such a classic!
SEGA, I will mail my money to your doorstep if you would give us 3D Eternal Champions.
Oh and hope Sonic 2 is coming up. Haven't bought that game in a while, I need another excuse to throw money at it.
Mine and thank you.
Edit: POWER DRIFT!!!... that is all...
@Einherjar I couldnt agree with you more. Sega would do very well to continue on with the 3D classics. I hope they do but im afraid they might be about done with this next set of classics.
@sillygostly I really hope you guys get it also. Its one of the best all time games which is talked about anytime the racing genre comes up in videoGame discussions. Now imagine if Sega will unleash Power Drift!
@ACK I know exactly how you feel!
I'm waiting for a 3D Classic of Final Fantasy
@KnightRider666 Let's hope Sega Keeps going. If they drop out of Classic 3D. Classic 3D is dead. I will be getting this and Mighty Switcforce 2 next week. That Wayforward sale is too good to pass on also! 2.49 for Mighty Switchforce 2 is about the best deal you can get in the Eshop. Right next to the Quality of Outrun 3d at 5.99
@KnightRider666 So Majora's Mask 3D doesn't count?
I've been waiting a while for this one. I bought my new 3DS on import for this game only to relealise it wasn't out in the west yet anyway.
I love the Sega 3D Classics. They just go well on the 3DS.
@Windy "Their 3D classics are as good as some new 3DS retail games." - I was thinking the same thing. But thought it maybe considered trolling.
Can't wait for this.
Now please put OutRun 2 with all the bells and whistles on the eshop. The OutRun series is aces.
The guys at M2 are doing such a lovely job with these. WANT!
Can't wait for this.
@sillygostly SEGA have confirmed to me that 3D classics for Australia will be delayed after afterburnerII. At this point in time they do not have a continued release date. Totally sucks
Of course I'm getting it, this is the Sega 3D Classic I've been waiting for.
It seemed to me like the Dreamcast port of the game ran at 60 FPS? Maybe I'm wrong, I haven't played it in a while.
Day 1 download! Love outrun!!!!!
@Taggsta : This is precisely why I'd love to see the back of SEGA. It's just one idiotic decision after another with them.
Getting this and After Burner 2 while I am at it.
@retro_player_22: No, it doesn't count. Not when we're talking about NES 3D Classics.
Love the old classic Sega games on the original hardware and on a 20'' or bigger TV screen.
i can't wait to get this on my 3ds
Can't wait. Been looking forward to this for months!!
Really looking forward to this. Would love M2 to also start an 'HD Classic' range for the Wii U.
I hope Power Drift is in the next batch
I've been in the queue for months. Can't wait.
The 3DS version runs everything at 60 fps, not just the roads. NLife's editor should have read the whole blog instead of spending 15 seconds skimming it for details.
My favourite game of all time, the Saturn has the 60fps mode by the way as described in the interview, and the Japanese Saturn release remains the best ever home version for me, while retaining the original car sprite, which is altered here and seems similar to the version in Shenmue 2.
This may be the second best version of the game though!
I will be getting this for sure. Loved playing this in 3D on my Sega Master System way back when. Also played Maze Hunter 3D, Missile Defense 3-D, Space Harrier 3D, Zaxxon 3D on my Sega Master System.
Looking back at some of the earlier Sega 3D Classics. I wish they had spent the time to update the resolution to support the 3DS screen size and make them wide screen. Also wish the Ecco game used the awesome Sega CD Soundtrack.
This is allready in my wish list, the moment this gets released, i get notified!
Now all i want from Sega are ALL their sprite scaler games converted to this system (would be even better if ALL systems/consoles gets those games). Never had a proper home version of Turbo OutRun, OutRunners, and others.
Power Drift may be good on the Saturn, but i bet the 3D effect would be super awesome on the NEW 3DS! Come on Sega, make it happen!
Since that fateful day in San Antonio, ibiza 1987, I've been waiting for arcade perfect outrun.. Now I've got this.. Less than a week away
Day 1, yes!
These releases show the love and care Nintendo SHOULD have given its own 3D line... granted, it would have stood a better chance at success had it opened with top list titles rather than Urban Champion. Even a 3D version of its own 3D racer, Rad Racer, would have made more sense.
Thank you, M2!
@MrHeli Seek out the Saturn version if you can, you can even get it to display 'insert coin' and it looks great on CRT tv with a SCART lead, as close to the arcade as you could get with the correct car graphics, and supports the analogue pad for steering and acceleration.
The Japanese version is the one to get though, so also requires a multi region mod or Japanese console, the international Sega Ages release has a glitch with the car on some routes where it gets stuck in an 'uphill' animation.
Ever since the first 3-D Classics we're announced I've wanted a port of the NES game 3-D Battles of World Runner. I think that game would finally get the build it deserves.
@KnightRider666 I'm sure Nintendo has other projects to work on for their new handheld over releasing 3D version of very old games for their new handhelds. For Nintendo, those 3D NES games are simply just experiments Nintendo made to give 3rd party something to work on with the 3D feature and since Sega love that idea, it's a good thing that they give it much love.
As long as 3rd party love it, Nintendo can just leave it to them. Besides I rather Nintendo continue working on new projects for their platform than continue spicing up their old games, games we play countless times already. Sure it would be nice to play a 3D version of games like Mach Rider, Metroid, Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. 3 but at this point I rather prefer them started making a new F-Zero, Wave Race, Mario RPG, Sin and Punishment, Kirby, Wario Land, Eternal Darkness, etc., for Wii U and/or 3DS.
@retro_player_22: What are you from Nintendo or something? lol. You seem to know a lot about nothing obviously. Other people besides me would like Nintendo to keep producing 3D Classic titles. Who are you to say they were just "experiments", and that they were originally made to be left behind afterwards so that "third parties" could pick up Nintendo's crumbs and start again?
@Ristar42 thans! I was thinking of getting a Saturn for that reason a whole back. Maybe when I have more room in my little flat. Already cramped with a Neo geo CD. Wii, wii U and SNES under my plasma! Maybe the 3DS version will make me want to get it again!
Where are the Sega classics for Wii U?
