A number of upcoming Wii U eShop titles, many scheduled for 2014, are coming to fruition thanks to crowdfunding. One that we may be able to add to the list in the future is Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey — this is a 3D adventure title from Norwegian developer Red Thread Games, which is perhaps best known among PC gamers for point-and-click 2D title The Longest Journey — Dreamfall Chapters is based in the same universe, but isn't a sequel to that title.
Dreamfall Chapters picked up an impressive $1,538,425 in its Kickstarter campaign earlier in the year, comfortably beyond its $850,000 target. The studio is also securing additional investment and funding, though it's made it clear, speaking to Eurogamer, that it intends to self-publish the title rather than work with a third-party publisher.
In that interview, Red Thread Games' Ragnar Tornquist also stated that the company is looking to take its title beyond PC and bring it to home consoles. The PS4 and Xbox One were certainly mentioned, and Tornquist gave an honest assessment that he'd like to also see the title on Wii U, assuming the game performs well enough on the platform and that the sales market looks positive.
We are also in dialogue with Nintendo. We're going to be looking at it. We can't make any promises because the the Wii U, it's underpowered compared to the next-gen consoles and PC obviously - I don't think that's a secret or Nintendo would get upset at me.
We're going to look at getting the game running on Wii U and then we'll make decisions depending on how that goes and what we see the market possibilities are doing. Like I said, we don't want to exclude anything, so we'll try anything.
It is a game being developed with Unity, a tool-set that's wholeheartedly supported on Wii U, which perhaps helps the odds of this project performing on the hardware. We certainly think that this looks like an interesting game — you can check out the official trailer below, as well as a video of Red Thread Games' developer session appearance at the recent Rezzed 2013 event. The PC release for this title is currently slated for November 2014.

Yes please!
Do it Red Thread Games. Nintendo console + classic adventure games = best thing ever.
Looks good to me.
Let's not start the "next gen" semantics debate again though.
That soundtrack is AWESOME! It did a great job of holding my interest, and now I'm positively intrigued by this game.
@cornishlee ikr i got sick of this poopies
Uh-oh here we go with the next-gen power debates again....-_-
This NEEDS to be on the Wii U!
It's not a 'debate' about power in this article, just part of the developer's thinking in considering Wii U. As they say themselves, Nintendo won't dispute or, probably, even be bothered by the sentiment. It's just reality.
Hopefully Unity will be nice and scalable for them, and if the Wii U does well over the holiday season it may encourage them to go for it.
I get the impression that a lot of developers (western studios especially) just aren't as disciplined anymore. In previous generations they have had to work within some serious limitations, but the best devs have turned out hugely impressive results (Donkey Kong Country, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Rogue Squadron II are examples).
Nowadays too many seem to think it beneath them to work with anything less than the best technology at the time, when really a lot of the time it just looks like they need it to compensate for the their relative lack of skill and standards. Few games are as technically polished or even as much fun as Nintendo's own, and I think it should be required of anybody who is serious about working in the games industry to study Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel real hard (it's obvious that Shin'en and more recently Sonic Team have been doing their homework).
Dreamfall...Dreamfall stops and thinks ohh! You mean that game for PC I always see in the bargain bin for like $5 new? Could be interesting to play it once, but I doubt it's a game for me. Basicly a no-name game over here
If it was released on Wii U eShop, it could finally get some recognition, maybe.
Well there goes another game I can add to my list of "games I never knew about until now".
All they need to do is forfeit gamepad functionality (utilising only the physical buttons) and they'll have more juice to work with. No?
OMG... please come up with another excuse.. this is so old.. it's not even funny.. I mean use something sensible.. like.. I don't know.. just come out and say hey sells suck so you may not get this game... Geez..
well, it's one thing they don't want to exclude wii u without trying. let's hope they manage, because it seems like something i could really enjoy.
"underpowered."
It's as powerful or more than the system running The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Worlds, which are considered the best looking games ever.
Not sure what that's all about, but come on now :/ — TBD
@Pod lmao no. Those are not better looking than PC games. I think you mean 'best looking on decade old hardware' in which case you'd be correct. A lot of us have moved on since then.
@ToneDeath
Absolutely, that hits my opinion on this matter on the spot.
I would love this game to come for Wii U. It's sounds very interesting (and the graphics look not bad, im sure the Wii U will be able to handel this.)
@TBD Here is a dev saying they may not release a game because the Wii U is underpowered. The user in question maintains that the Wii U is near equivalent in power (technically superior somehow) and this will not deter devs.
That is seemingly relevant for this article. lol
Edit: I suppose I can just link this next time this subject comes up..
Why is it so many devs keep coming out and saying the Wii U is underpowered compared to PS4 and XBox One but people here in the comments keep saying it's not. Surely their must be some factual proof on this one way or another :/
@PersonAboveMe
There is proof. Go google 'next gen console comparison' and you will see the hardware in addition to evaluations made by people that understand the hardware. There are a few people here that believe the Wii U is just as powerful, but they have no source so there's no reason to believe them over everyone in the actual industry.
Ragnar Tornquist is not my fav person after the whole Secret World debacle so i wouldn't purchase anyway but i understand people love Dreamfall and this would be another game for the Wii U.
On topic, the underpowered thing is totally irrelevant here since this game is primarily being developed for the pc. As such in order to sell well there it will need to run on rigs with medium to high graphic cards and processors at least 5 years old.
What he is actually saying is the console version will be separate from the pc version and they only want to work on one port, since the Xbone and PS4 architecture is so similar to pcs and each other it's easy to crossover, however the Wii U version will take extra time and resources which they don't feel like doing unless it moves serious units.
I wish dev's would stop talking to the masses as if we're all stupid and know nothing about technology.
This series always interested me so if it came to Wii U then I would totally check it out
@Emblem I think you missed the part where the dev directly referenced the console being underpowered. Not sure why you think it is irrelevant.
Crysis 3 can also be played on five year old hardware, but there's no point in putting it on the Wii U. Its a hyperbole, but the point still remains. With your logic, the Wii U's strength shouldn't keep it from receiving any PC games.
Just based off of how the game looks in the video, the Wii U can handle it.
This game is being supported by Unity huh? That engine has yet to fail the WiiU in terms of giving the games over. I'd wonder if.......
how come its going to be on phone/ tablet and yet the wii u is under powered is seems bonkers to me
Sorry wont be buying this for the Wii U, I backed the kickstarter and besides the prequels are pc games, which I both own on pc.
@Rafie Totally agree. Loved Longest Journey on PC back in the day (think it came out in 1999) and lobed Dreamfall on the Xbox (Amazing). These types of games would be amazing on Wii U because of the interface. Nintendo needs to help make this happen.
@Gunnerholic Dreamfall is also on Xbox... so...
And the longest Journey?
How is Red Thread Games "best known" for The Longest Journey? The Longest Journey, and its "kind-of-sequel-but-not-quite" Dreamfall were both made by Funcom. Granted, Ragnar Tørnquist was the "mastermind" behind both of those, but it was still made by Funcom.
Also, Dreamfall Chapters is a direct sequel to Dreamfall.
Anyway, as for the prospect on Dreamfall Chapters on Wii U, I'd love that. Having a game in actual Norwegian on the Wii U would be awesome. There's so few of those for any console or PC, for good reason, but still.
Was gonna read this, then I saw the subtitle. We don't need any more of this crap...
I'd say it sounds to me like they are nervous or a little out of their comfort zone with regards to the Wii U perhaps. When you are an indie dev the last thing you want is to be using all your resources on a tricky console port.
No promises as Wii U is "underpowered compared to the next-gen consoles"
...Why would that even matter? I really doubt this game is as "powerful" as a PS4/One title, so that shouldn't be a problem for you.
This game looks cool, but geez...
it looks interesting, here's hoping that things work out and they are able to make a Wii U version...
This is on pc, ported to consoles. It will either require a NASA computer to run, or it will run fine on the Wii U. I don't see the problem. (Unless, or course, they aren't very good devs, or just don't wanna put any effort into it)
"We can't make any promises because the the Wii U, it's underpowered compared to the next-gen consoles and PC obviously"
Finally a developer that is honest!!
