LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins Confirmed For 3DS

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

The chase actually begins on 21st April

While there's been plenty of information and footage for LEGO City: Undercover on Wii U, the open-world title that offers a potential blend of block-based madness and GTA, all has been silent on the announced 3DS equivalent. Nintendo's now confirmed that 3DS isn't getting a stripped back equivalent, but a prequel — LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins.

The game only had a rather cursory mention in the press release from Nintendo, confirming a release date of 21st April in North America, while it was stated that as a prequel it'll focus on the exploits of the main character, Chase McCain, as a rookie cop. Potentially due to pressures of development, this prequel is rather peculiarly being released after the Wii U game, which is currently down for release in North America on 18th March.

After many stripped back iterations of home console LEGO games on Nintendo handhelds, what do you think of the decision to offer a prequel instead of a customised port? Are you pleased to get a different story? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and we'll keep an eye out for further information.

I did want to get this game & was looking forward to playing it but after being disappointed with:

Lego:

Pirates of the Carribean - 3ds
Star Wars - 3ds
Indiana Jones 2 - ds

Not sure if I'm willing to chance another lego game again. :$ Sorry... :$

The only one I really enjoyed was Lego Indiana Jones DS the first lego indiana jones ds game.

Happy Gaming! (^_^)

@Svengoolie,

Yeah it should be awesome just skeptic. I use to really love & enjoy the lego series on the ds & when I got a few lego 3ds games not a big of fan anymore.

I really hope this game turns out good. I'm gonna wait til after it's released & check the ratings in the e-shop on this game after its released to see the star rating then go from there. :$ Sorry... :$ Really hope the game turns out good.

Happy Gaming! (^_^)

Sweet! I'm glad its a different storyline :D I'll get it if its an open-world game & not a "restricted" version like previous LEGO games were.

Oh my. I have to choose between the Wii U and 3DS version, although I'll probably only end up with it for the Wii U.

I kind of wanted to see the reviews of both before I made my mind up on which to get, but I was already leaning towards the Wii U version so maybe I'll end up with two great games.

Wii U version for sure, but I share some oh the other commentors scepticism on the handheld lego games. I will await reviews for that and gauge my interest from them.

As long as it's as good as the Wii U version. If the console version is still much better, who cares if it has different levels.

Thas simply awesome! I don't like ports so it's very good news as for me. 3DS don't need any ports.

I'm still on the fence about the game until we get a little more info. The good news is it will have its own story and won't be a stripped down port of the Wii U game. If it's not a full realized open world game I may not get it though, the 3DS is powerful enough to handle a game like that (PSP had two fully realized GTA games) so I hope the developers go all out.

I like the idea of having a prequel over have a stripped back, horribly rehashed portable edition. It's something fresh that nobody has experienced yet if they have played the Wii U game and the people who own a 3DS and a Wii U will see the complete story unfold. I hope that the flow from " the chase begins" to the Wii U is smooth and makes sense and it still feels like the same game in a way if that makes sense to anyone.
