Wow, the year is passing by quickly and the Nintendo Switch library seems to get better with each passing month. July saw the release of the rather lovely Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Octopath Traveler, two really great games which hopefully a large proportion of you were able to pick up.
So, what's on the horizon for Nintendo Switch fans, then? We've compiled a list of all the good stuff coming out at retail in August and September, so feast your eyes and prepare your wallets.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate - 28th August
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is the follow-up to Monster Hunter Generations, and marks the Monster Hunter series' debut on Nintendo Switch as an exclusive. Players can face off against the largest roster of unique monsters in any Monster Hunter game to date, and take on the role of a brave hunter challenging larger-than-life beasts that yield valuable resources used for crafting unique weapons and equipment.
Sure it might not be as fancy-looking as Monster Hunter: World, but it's as close as you're going to get on the Switch right now.
Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit - 14th Sept
This brand-new Nintendo Labo kit contains materials to build a variety of customisable cardboard creations including a Car, a Submarine, a Plane, a Pedal, two Keys and more. Insert one of the assembled Keys into any of the vehicles to enjoy a variety of fun games and activities. Changing between vehicles while adventuring is easy – just remove the key from one and slot it into another to transform from an airplane pilot to a submarine captain. You may or may not be the target audience for Nintendo Labo, and it's fine if you're not. But for those who enjoyed Toy-Con Kit 01 and 02, this looks like another fun cardboard adventure.
Dragon Ball FighterZ - 28th Sept
Dragon Ball FighterZ will enable fans of all skill levels to truly feel like their favourite Dragon Ball character. Featuring 3 vs. 3 battle mechanics, both new and seasoned players alike are sure to experience the epic scope of Dragon Ball as they build their team and take them into battle. In order to build the strongest team possible, players will need to train and master more than one fighter and style. Only then will their skills be strong enough to take down the competition. Will you be picking this bad boy up in September?
More Awesome Nintendo Switch Games
Other than Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03 and Dragon Ball FighterZ there are lots more Switch retail games which might take your fancy in August and beyond.

Mon HUN! MON HUN!!! MON HUUUUN!!!
Remember when August was a chill/no releases/catch up to you backlog kinda of month? Good times...
Prepurchased Unexplored unlocked edition. 0 mention of so in the article comes out on the 9th
@Shiryu yeah, between Mon Hun, Dragon Café, and Overcooked 2 AND Octopath Traveler, my August will be unusually busy game-wise!
Maybe Monster Hunter and Okami. Oooor maybe nothing. There is joy to actually play the games as well.
Just the Torna DLC of which I got the expansion pass back in December.
Already playing Generations Ultimate, so eh...
@Joeynator3000 the japanese one I assume?
All I want for my birthday this year is Overcooked 2. That is all.
I wonder if there is any chance that Mutant Football League will be any good? I always had fun with NFL Blitz and NFL Street games...
Just gonna throw this out there, Anker products are the definition of the word legit. Best customer service I have ever had the pleasure to experience and that is saying a lot. With that being said, the price to the "officially licensed" battery pack is expensive. I bought the exact same size battery for almost half that price during one of Amazon's many, many sales throughout the year. I have used it on my Switch, and cell phones without any issues. If anyone is interested in the link, let me know.
All of these titles are getting physical releases? That's pretty cool!
Really hoping they make it to their target audiences.
My interest leave August and September pretty open. Good thing I've got a few more Megaman X games to play through and Go Vacation.
Picking up the dpad joycon and eagerly awaiting Mega Man 11, Super Mario Party, Starlink, Let's Go Pokemon Eevee, and SNK Anniversary.
I think I'm going to need some features on some of these games
(Or, you know, a Direct.)
The link for N.E.R.O only gives a PS4 version, btw.
@Spectra World was a disappointment? Wow, I had the exact opposite experience. World was so good that it's going to be very hard to go back to the older entries and I'm debating even picking this version up. I played some MHG the other day in anticipation of this release and the overall combat felt much more simplistic and spammy, and of course the QOL improvements were greatly missed. All of the weapon combo changes in World made each weapon better and much more fun to play in my opinion, and I just felt limited playing MHG. Sure, there's all the weapon arts and styles to pick from, but those don't feel as satisfying as shoulder charging through a monster's roar to unleash your true charge with a great sword, or power charging your hammer with a big bang combo. I'm glad people in the West are getting an opportunity to play this addition in English but I'm still debating on picking it up.
I am very hyped for Dead Cells. I played about 50 hours of the first Early Access version on Steam but haven't played since and I'm looking forward to the changes and additions.
It's almost Okami HD time!
@Medic_alert Well, it kind of is. It's 3 year old port of a 3ds game made by the MH B team. Not to say it's a bad game though, but more doesn't make something better.
Mega Man 11 is preordered. I might get Victor Vran, I’ve been wanting an A-RPG for Switch.
MHGU, Little Dragons Cafe, XC2 DLC, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Super Mario Party, Starlink Battle for Atlas, Lego DC Super Villians, and Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu & Eevee. My wallet is going to hate me.
Who actually buys those Nyko Intercoolers? They're released for every console, and they're all useless. Does anyone have a genuine reason for them?
My backlog is crying right now.
Overcooked 2 already paid for. That'll keep me and the misses happy until Spider-Man
i'm getting starlink and i preordered it
Looks like a couple of solid months for amazon... I mean us... of course it’s good for us
Can someone tell me how can we transfer the save of MHG on the 3DS to MHGU on Switch? Is there something to download?
October took an unexpected turn for me. It was only going to be just Disgaea 1, but then 3 more games showed up that caught my interest.
Wow, way too many great games to be able to buy them all! A brand new Mega Man game for $30? That's an easy decision, all in on that. Monster Hunter will be great to get into for the first time. But man, there's so much more...
The only thing that could have pulled me away from my PS4 for late August-October (I'll be busy with the Shenmue Remasters) would have been Dark Souls Remaster on Switch. I'm honestly surprised that they have barely made a peep about it, since it launched for everything else almost three months ago! If companies want to see comparable sales of big titles on Switch, they have to get better about that!
Crayola Scoot for GOTY 2018
I'm sorry, this whole article is just filled with wrong information. NL needs a new editor. We all know Switch has an incredibly thin library and there are no new games until 2019 other than Smash and a Pokemon game nobody wants.
Guys, what is social life?
-Random MHGU player after August 28th
My shopping schedule :
August 2018
1. Go Vacation !
2. Overcooked 2
September 2018
1. LABO Toy Con 01 Variety Kit
October 2018
1. Little Dragon Cafe
2. (Probably) Yokai Watch Blaster 3DS
November 2018
1. Super Mario Party
December 2018
1. Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu
2. Crash Bandicoot N'Sane Trilogy
January 2019
1. LABO Toy Con 03 Vehicle Kit
2. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
At the same time, during July - December 2018, it's also my shopping schedule for Japanese 3DS games. I really hope i can obtain at least 4 games by the end of 2018 & i have bought Japanese 3DS machine on November 2018 according to my plan.
Omg why has powe A decided to release that Mario Bros switch carry case when I’ve just bought the zelda one! I’d rather have that 😭hate it when that happens!! As for the games only Pokemon of interest really. Maybe a few others
I'm starting to want super Mario party
Even the Free Behemoth Monster Hunter World Update tomorrow is more exciting than spending $60 for ancient MH on Switch (5 days before DQXI) this should be 29.99 at best. That would make more sense.
Save money in August. DQXI, TR, Valkyria 4, Flipping Death, Xeno2 DLC in September. No point spending money on all this when SEPT is full of AAA NEW games.
Disgaea 1 port already failed in Japan last week - Switch version didn't even chart and PS4 was #19 with 4,094
Time for Disgaea 6 on Switch. Perfect combo!
@Agramonte Dragon Ball Fighter Z you mean.....DQIX is MIA until Square figures out where their rears are (in terms of Switch).
@NEStalgia DBFZ is awesome... I do not play fighting games - but did 3 matches at a friends and it blew my mind. If you like Fighting Games that is a choice. But DBFZ VS Xeno2 on the GO... I'll go jRPG every time.
Also, I played God WAR on VITA, good old school SRPG. That is good for a black Friday sale.
GMG has DQXI for $44 on PC, so not waiting. Valkyria 4, Flipping Death - I'll get on Switch
https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/dragon-quest-xi-pc/
So many RPGs, so little time. I'm really starting to feel bummed out that I can't possibly play all these titles. I'm frantically trying to progress through XC2 to clear the way for Torna. Meanwhile Disgaea 1 C will be out soon and I'm only halfway through D5C. And Valkyrie Chronicles 4 is coming, and I didn't even get Octopath or Ys VIII yet and oh shoot, God Wars sounds pretty cool too and what about Pillars of Eternity 2 and damnit people, there is only ONE of me!!!!!
Derk suls, wer u goink?
Why not just call it rest of the year when you include games not releasing in August or September?
My next game will be the Japanese release of the Layton game.
@Tsurii I played hundreds of hours of both actually. They added new movesets and combos in World. Just take the GS for example. There is a vast difference between the 2 playstyles in MHG and MHW.
mario party for me, cant wait
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate will be a rare purchase for me as I can finally take my bow skills to the next level with a proper 2nd stick now, and well y'know... replayability and stuff. Mega Man 11 will be played, hoping it's physical so I can rent it. I really want to want Starlink but I just can't get my mind around it. I'll see if a review changes my mind at all. Other than that, I'll try to tend to my backlog (but will more than likely wind up crying in a corner when the next obscure Arcade Archives/JTA or new must have game announced out of nowhere appears...)
Dead Cells! I've heard some great things about it, and I have it pre-loaded. Can't wait to play it.
@JasmineDragon You can always git gud and go Pro eSports so you can get paid to backlog?
@Agramonte Ah you meant across all platforms, got it. In that case yeah there's a ton of stuff Sept into Oct. Too much! Yeah, been playing DBFZ on X1 and it's easily my favorite fighter!
That's a heck of a price on DQ for a pre-launch discount! Not sure if that means Square is feeling generous of if it means to expect Bethesda level brokenness
Monster Hunter!!!! It's going to be so good to go hunting with my friend who is hundreds of miles away. Also Dragonball, the Architect game and a few others.
Monster Hunter, Okami HD, and De Blob 2 for me
@NEStalgia
"...if it means to expect Bethesda level brokenness"
🤣😅😂... That was what happened with Nier: Automata on PC... to this day I cant play full screen.
to late now... let it ride.
Maybe Okami HD. I’ve got the Wii version in my backlog, depending on reviews I may trade in and upgrade.
No real interest in the Monster Hunter series. Always seems like an overwhelmingly deep time sink that’s best played in multiplayer, which doesn’t really suit my style.
blade strangers in august, mfl in September. also state of mind in august as well.
Okami and Valkyria Chronicles 4 for me.
Time for the big football game decision-PES on PS4 or FIFA on Switch.
September is Spider-Man time. My cynical, world weary hide is unreasonably excited for that.
I don't know why people are crying about a software drought. That looks like a pretty strong line-up of games taking us into the Christmas season, and that's not even every game that will be released in that time frame.
Little Dragon Café looks lovely.
@Agramonte "Even the Free Behemoth Monster Hunter World Update tomorrow is more exciting than spending $60 for ancient MH on Switch". You make it sound as if any part of MHW was more exciting than MHGU to begin with. Oh well, I suppose not everyone consider gameplay to be number one priority in video games.
And I would appreciate it if the NintendoLife stopped referring to MHGU as some sort of poor cousin of MHW, when it's the other way round. Ask the Japanese how well MHW did in the country of Monster Hunter fans...
Guess I will give monster hunter a try
@Preposterous wait, what?... It did great. 2 million in 3 days in Japan... in an install base of barely 6mill (a fraction of 3DS) and 20% higher price point. "The country of Monster Hunter fans" didn't care about this port.
And MHW was to get it OUT of Japan. And it did with flying colors.
http://gametyrant.com/news/monster-hunter-world-just-passed-8-million-copies-sold
Sure gameplay matters why MHW has a 90 Metacritic (Nintendo made an "accolade" video when Octopath hit 84). It is not the "poor cousin" it is the "old grandpa"... had his time, now for something new.
I don't care there is a port - but MHGU is a 29.99/39.99 "remastered" at best. Wait for a Black Friday sale. Tons of other stuff to play.
Monster hunter ? Is it a good single player game or only multi-player. I dont have good wifi for the switch at home and normally play offline.
@brendon987 You will only be able to play some of it solo. Technically you can play it all solo, but most of the game is scaled for multiplayer. However, you will get more than your money's worth with the single player story.
@Agramonte MHW was a fad, it might have sold a lot in a short time, but the strength of MH was in how long it would continue to sell. Meanwhile, MHW in the past 3 months sold only a fraction of those millions, about 400k worlwide and it's the shortest living MH in Japan to date.
Bringing metacritic scores while discussing gameplay is, dare I say it, preposterous. Especially in case of MH, because no MH fan would consider them a valid measure of game's quality - 4U and 3U with lower metacritic scores are still considered pinnacle of the series within the fandom.
MHGU with its ton of content is worth much more than barebones MHW. $60 for MHGU is perfectly reasonable, while MHW is already being sold for $25, which is more than it's actually worth.
There's a reason why the next MH (most likely with number 5 in the title) is heading exclusively to Switch.
MHGU is gonna eat up all my time till december...then smash launches and i'll be dead in my man cave before you know it.
You guys are arguing between the community divide.
While i'm personally on team OG MH because I prefer more technical execution, there are people that just prefer MHW because of how more action oriented it is.
Personally, I wouldn't have minded it but it made everything become too free. The AI pathing of said monsters wasn't exactly...astounding either from my experience.
That said i've played too much of old MH (mainly MHFU and MHTri) to not prefer the more technical execution side of MH.
That and and I just really love what they do with the supersized variants.
Based on my backlog: Skyrim, Ocyopath, and Ys8. I only need to purchase Pokemon Eevee, Labyrinth of Refrain, and Starlink. I cannot forget X2: Torna season pass which I already have. SNK anniversary is on my eye as well, but with my GPD who needs it.
Monster hunter! And for only £39 if you shop around!
@Preposterous It is the best selling Capcom game ever... so if it sold "slowly" or fast is irrelevant - they never made it. So if the score does not matter why is Nintendo using them on their marketing - 🤔
It sold 8.3 million units in 6 months, which brought an increase of 46.5% on the company's net sales year-over-year. How much money you want them to make before giving players a break on the price?... LOL, I wish I could sell you something also. News Flash, big games on other systems go down in price... that is a good thing! Hence why paying $60 for a rehash makes no sense.
Yes... and it will be NEW for the Switch. And tons of fans will play it just like with MHW. But then sale numbers and reviews WILL MATTER... right 🙃
Hell, I even have the $15 Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on iPad. I could care less if a game is exclusive or on a toaster Oven.
@electrolite77 I forgot about Okami
I don't like being too negative but wow, look at all that mediocrity.
Between MHGU and Salt and Sanctuary it's going to be a great month for me!!
@Agramonte Of course it's relevant, in the context of MHWU/MHW2. Capcom cannot make a second (or rather, a third) debut with MH in the west. Most of those millions probably were done with the game after a dozen of hunts. Only a fool would think those 8.3 millions will be as enthusiastic for the next game in the World series.
Ask Nintendo about their marketing campaign, I'm not affiliated with them and don't care about their accolade trailers. Bringing up metacritic scores in a discussion about quality of games is stupid, period.
@Preposterous Except when it is convenient. Again, every metric used on every other game (even for Nintendo) points at a success... it just does not fit your narrative, period.
@Agramonte
Nah Monster Hunter World got incredibly boring, incredibly quick. Too easy, no reason to make even a quarter of the sets, too few monsters, very little monster variety.
The only really cool moment was seeing Deviljho and then it turns out he is way too easy as well. Plus the last boss was a Huge generic letdown. I'd like to see some of the new monsters in a proper MH game though. The ideas were cool but kinda wasted.
Sure looked pretty though. I don't regret buying it and I played over 200 maybe close to 300 hours but J have no interest in going once I get generations. That is by far the least time I have played a monster hunter game.
Hell I'd give it an 8 out of ten and I think it is a good game but it's just not as fun with no challenge.
@Agramonte I could make a list of games with <90 score that are objectively better than games with 90< score, but it's probably going to be a waste of time if you accuse me of being selective for the sake of some narrative. Same with titles that have sold dozens of millions, but simply were not good games; appeal to popularity is just so ridiculous I'm surprised people still do it.
Anyway, I can only wish you happy hunting (eventually).
I can't understand why this site has shown no excitement at all for the excellent Salt & Sanctuary which is coming out tomorrow.
Definitely picking up Overcooked 2. Everything else on my buy list will have to wait until a sale, or when my backlog is empty. I imagine a lot of them will go on sale during the holidays anyway.
@SetupDisk this is the first I've heard of Salt and Sanctuary coming to the Switch?!! Wow, that's awesome. Even though I've 100%ed this on Steam and own it on PS4, I'll be getting this again on Switch. This game has a lot of issues, but it's a lot of fun too. I'm really looking forward to playing this on the go.
@SetupDisk You getting a new boss, armor, quests event today... and you get an extreme difficulty later on -and Arch Tempered Teostra & Kushala
https://www.vg247.com/2018/08/01/monster-hunter-world-behemoth-live-extreme-coming/
Everyone needs to pick their poison. I'm still getting my money worth.
@Preposterous You were th one that brought "reception" in the conversation. If they Objective in the West they are also in Japan. I guarantee you that when Smash sells a boat load of copies and it gets reviewed well tons of people will gush over it. There wont be some introspection on the value of these metrics (Or list comparison)
Yeah man, same to you - have a blast of a hunt. Like I said, all good with the port but not my price point - why I didn't comment to anyone here who said they buying it. I just made a post that said why "I" was skipping it.
We be on the same camp next MH
@Painkiller_Mike bro you literally just saved me as I read your comment and remembered that I have an Ankor somewhere in my house that I completely forgot about, just as I was contemplating buying another one. I don’t kno why that just popped a lightbulb on, but thanks!
Other than Mario Party, Sonic Racing and Smash.... I am not looking forward to much.
So this page only lists games that Nintendo Life has affiliated links for? Hence why no link or even any word on Okami HD? Or on State of Mind? Or Yooka Laylee physical?
Cool...
Mutant football league, super Mario party, Pokémon
After playing lots of monster hunter world on ps4 pro, I can’t bother with the switch version of a monster hunter.
Xenoblade the Golden Country, Disgaea 1 Complete and Valkaria Chronicles 4. Later on Pokemon Let's Go and Smash Ultimate. Hopefully Wargroove somewhere in there too. I have plenty to look forward to over the coming months. Not to mention Okami HD later this month too.
Why in the world is The Banner Saga Trilogy bundle being released later when all three games are on the Switch and the bundle is on the PS Store?
At least I’ll be away for the month of September in the US to stop me spending money on all these games. Unless I bring my Switch and go on a crazy shopping spree...
Remember when Dark Souls had a May release date?
@Joeynator3000
How is it? I haven't played any Monster Hunter games. Interested in picking this up.
@seph_patrick I dunno, you might wanna ask someone else. I'm enjoying it, I guess. xD
(it's not my favorite MH game, lol)
A number of obvious titles for me coming up, but I can't wait for Little Dragon's Café, honestly! 😁
@SetupDisk Yes does seem like an after thought. I recently got it on ps4 sale thinking it would never come to Switch. Played about 4hrs or so and not touched it since. I'll pick it up on Switch at some point as I have no idea when I'd get to fit it in, between Octopath Traveler,Dead Cells(preordered),Hollow Knight DLC,MHGU,Okami HD,which I'll likely pick up too for that price, and then Salt and Sanctuary and also Dark Souls! To say there's a games drought is quite laughable really. The fact I'm not into Smash or Pokemon means I'll have some chance of clearing a backlog by the end of the year. MHGU is going to be a constant for months, even after I've imported my Generations save file.I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this too
@Rontanamo_Bay
“I’m curious when the editors of this site will finally acknowledge all these flaws of that game and admit that it’s pretty good, but a far cry from “really, really great”.”
I’d suggest never. Because neither this or any site, or anyone with an opinion, is obligated to change it based on a few complaints on the internet. That’s not how it works.
These are releases! I'd definitely go with a lot of the Japanese ones, and the Titan Quest. OMG I'm excited! I'll buy a Switch in Christmas now!
For me, it will be Overcooked 2, the Torna DLC, Little Dragons Cafe, Pokemon, and maybe (depending on whether it’s any good) Mario Party. Plus Moonlighter and Flipping Death later down the line once they go on sale. And the Spyro remaster is coming out in September for PS4, too... Considering that I’m currently playing XC2 and Captain Toad, and that my backlog includes Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem Warriors, the Zelda and Mario Rabbids DLCs, and the last few missions on Hyrule Warriors, I probably have enough to happily game for the next 12 months or so. 😁
Theres actually nothing of interest for me here at all.
DBZ i might pick up one day but not for that price, id grab it second hand somewhere one day, every attempt i've ever had at Monster Hunter has ended the same (with me giving up pretending im enjoying it after 2 days).
I'll continue to wait i guess... i hope Dark Souls drops soon and i hope there is some substance in the GTA5 rumors.
The November stuff looks decent but is still a way off
@Spectra @MisterMan
I fall on neither extreme.
I loved World- it was just excellent. But by no means do I have an issue playing MH Generations Ultimate. It's a huge upgrade from the 3DS, first ever HD portable version, first ever hybrid version, and the only entry in the series to have transmog, playing as felynes and optional styles and arts.
World was fantastic, but MH Gen Ult will be also. Absolutely zero issue playing the older style games. At least, not on Switch. If it was a 3DS game then sure, I wouldn't go back to that. But its full 1080p/720p with a full button set (and that was the BIGGEST quality of life hindrance before World, which is solved with MHGenUlt).
@MisterMan That was my experience as well. They seem like games I should absolutely love, but I just can't get into them. I haven't played World yet, but I'm stoked it's coming to PC this month, so I'll definitely be giving it a play through.
EDIT: @JaxonH Maybe I'll consider trying this one then. I played a bit of 3, and couldn't get absorbed in it on 3DS. Part of it was poor UI/small text, admittedly, so I would imagine a higher resolution version would alleviate that.
Only MonsterBoy for me but I'm gonna wait because in Europe, there is no physical release.
So, or the game will get a box version in the EU or I'll pass... It's sad because Game Atelier is a French company and the least they could do, will be to treat Europeans the same way they do with Amercans... :/
Wow, the money people were right... there's not many good games.
@Draxa No prob! Those Anker powercores are amazing devices and work perfectly with the Switch.
@Agramonte
Maybe I'll play it again when the extreme difficultly comes out. That sounds interesting.
Megaman 11, Starlink, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Monster Boy and Okami HD for me.
Got both Monster Hunter and Dead Cells pre-purchased. The last thing I need is more games, but I have a rogue lite obsession and I need Switch Monster Hunter in my life.
Apart from Mario Party, Monster Hunter and one other, the rest are just sheep in wolves clothing, at inflated prices.
The only game I currently am planning to get is Dead Cells physically for Switch, I have it preordered to arrive on launch day.
Selling my switch was a good decision, where's the Nintendo games? If I get another switch in a few years there might be a few decent games to play. Will stick with the Wii U for now, only game I can't play but want to is Mario Odyssey!
Dragon Ball FighterZ. Beta convinced me 100%. So awesome and smooth
