@I-U I agree, the lack of world themes makes the game feel kind of empty. You get to the desert-themed map, hear the desert-themed map music, clear the desert-themed level, and then spend the rest of the world waiting for another desert level. It's disjointed. The game feels more like an unsorted level select screen than an adventure.
I'd say I love 3D Land more than 3D world because it was designed for one player. Playing 3D world alone is so boring because they make these huge areas to accommodate four people. Same reason I could never finish return to dreamland but love triple deluxe.
Thank you by the way, to whoever recommended that game to me. I picked it up a few days ago and love it!
You just ran to the finish within what felt like a very confined 3D area.
That's pretty much every 2D Mario ever. Unless I've been playing them wrong of course.
Areas in a 2D game felt like confined 3D areas to you?
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Staying 2D is all good, but spreading out into the third dimension, yet confining your playing field to needlessly small areas is simply unasked for.
Nope. New Super Mario Bros 2 is the worst Mario game ever. Copy and paste NSMB and add in tons of coins= a new and unique experience? I think not my good sir, I think not.
Good point that game was epic terrible. All it was, was copypasta and they just throw in this super lame collection aspect of rampaging overkill coins to have this big coin vault that racks up as you play and many times over replay the stages to hit certain limits. I remember buying it used for $25 which pleased me, I was able to get my money back and it was the first Super Mario Bros game I never finished and don't regret it at all.

They're colored slabs. I don't know how that leaves any exploration outside of the occasional pipe.
There are hidden coins to find, as well as extra lives. Mostly it's about charm, though. Remember when games used to be charming? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Bahaha, they really are some delicious cookies though...
Finding the secret coins was enjoyable for me, and each area was like a toy box. Small in size but bursting with fun ideas. [Talking about 3D Land, yet to try World hate to say...]
I'm ok with the game being somewhat limited in scope to some extent, but I was very disappointed in 3D World, while being technically better than Land, it was an easier pill to swallow having the linearity in a 3D environment on a handheld versus having pretty much the same linearity on a modern console.. although the multiplayer is nice, I'd trade that in for a more open level design.
Definitely the worst of the 3D mario games. Definitely not the worst overall. It has a very serious lack of character to it though, very sterile and generic in it's level design and visuals. It's sitting at 90 on metacritic. I'd probably say more of an 85. That's still a very good score though, compared to games in general. I think a lot of it's high scores come from the fact that it was just seen as THE game that kinda defined the 3DS.
I remember when I got to this one desert-type level that actually did let me run around and rewarded me for it with huge shortcuts, it felt almost perfect.
I think I know the one you're talking about. The desert with the propellor block and the tower. It was my favourite level. (Edit: Looked around and I think that level was 3-1/Special 6-1)

If you want a real controversial opinion, try thinking that NSMB DS is the worst NSMB game. You'd be surprised how rare a sentiment it is.

3D Land is understandable, the concepts of the game suit the 3DS well thus in my opinion is a great game, The REAL offender is 3D World, whoever came up with this idea should had been smacked, taking what works on a Handheld game and translating it into a console game didn't work for 3D World like I said multiple times on this site, 3D lands extremely short level and level designed worked cause it was a handheld game, 3D World fails because it's just 3D land with cat suits, more playable characters, multi-player (and a crappy one at that) and it's in HD whoopdie doo
I personally think 3D World was just as disappointing. The perfect review scores had so many lines that turned out to not be true and the previews showed nearly everything good the game had to offer. I liked most of it but it isn't fit to be part of the same series as 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. There was too much recycling. Nintendo are falling into some very bad habits these days, even with their crown jewels.
My nephew and niece, aged 13 and 9, played it for about 5 minutes with me before demanding to return to NSMBU.
I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

Funny, that was my favorite as well. That one really stood out to me.
That was possibly the only great level in the game. It shows how good the game could have been...
No way! It wasn't too challenging compared to other Mario games, but it had gorgeous visuals and it's one of those games where the 3D effect feels like more than a nice extra. The shoebox-like setup of the levels was perfect.
Way better than those conservative New Super Mario Bros. games. There's almost zero innovation in this one.
