@bilboa it just might be that, although the actors found out it was a Zelda game they were working on by the time they were recording, the script was written without considering that would be the case. Maybe the script was long finished when the auditions began and it was unreasonable to change it just to insert "Link" here and there. Besides, Zelda's voice actress having discovered she was auditioning for BotW wouldn't be surprising, taking into account that her character is the only one that mentions Link's name (and only twice IIRC).
I wonder if this secrecy is the reason characters in Breath of the Wild jump through all kinds of hoops to not say "Link". At first I thought they intended the player to choose Link's name, a la Final Fantasy X and later dropped the idea in favor of a more impactful trailer and beginning sequence ("Wake up, Link"). Either way, it was very distracting and made it sound unnatural.
@Prizm Isn't that enough if a hint to you that your assumption is wrong? Super Meat Boy doesn't mimic retro games at all, except for the secret stages in which Meat Boy enters a warp zone, but even then, only the visuals (and the lives limit) become retro. The gameplay is still the same. I've been gaming since the 90's, and I've never seen a retro game like Super Meat Boy.
You are totally entitled to your tastes. It's certainly a niche game. But you don't need to rationalize those tastes, much less so by stating that the game didn't meet expectations it never set out to meet.
@Hughesy It doesn't work like that. 2D and 3D are demanding in their own ways. They are programmed in completely different ways that make use of completely different features of the GPU. And GPUs these days are heavily optimized towards 3D rendering, not 2D.
I'm currently playing this game on PC and, wow, it's really worth the praise. Very unique, challenging as hell, but very rewarding. One thing it doesn't get enough credit for is its placement of secrets and optional content. The game is not really that hard... unless you want to also complete the (optional) Dark World.
This game is so damn awesome. Been playing it since I got it on the Steam Summer Sale. 200 hours already. And it's about to get more awesome (and more inviting to newcomers) with the new update.
It's very clear that either of two things happened here: Nintendo Life doesn't want to be that publication who scared third parties away after they finally came back OR Nintendo Life was kindly asked to not put a score until a patch releases, which they were told would be soon but clearly not soon enough.
For those mentioning Steam, it's worth remembering that Steam both allows you to backup your games and restore them and also works offline. As far as digital DRM goes, it's the most consumer-friendly way of doing it.
@theberrage That is sthe problem. I expected more from Nintendo Life. I come here because the team was always trustworthy. Even when Nintendo's own games suck, they don't sugarcoat it. Not scoring the game + not mentioning the microtransactions was not at all what I was expecting.
@PhantomSwitch The Switch installed base is less than 10% that of the PS4. Among those, the ones who also have a PS4 are probably a minority, because the early adopters are usually fans, that is, Wii U or 3DS owners. So no, not a threat. Competition, yet, but not a thread. Also, Nintendo are the ones who like to say they're not competing in the same market when they obviously are.
@scully1888 Please, don't put words into my mouth. I haven't once mentioned the score of the review. You could've given it a 10/10 for all I care (wouldn't be much different from other gaming websites). The only problem I have is that you haven't mentioned the microtransactions AT ALL, not even to say they are bearable. If I had bought the game based on your review (technical issues aside), as someone who never played them before (which I believe is the same situation as many Nintendo platform owners), when I got home and found out that I have just payed $60 for a glorified F2P game, I'd be pissed at you. I would completely, honestly, put your professionalism into question, and I'd be lying here if I said I wouldn't. The unscored review only adds salt to the injury.
As a gamer, even if you don't personally care, you certainly know how much microtransactions, especially the pay-to-win kind are hated on the community. As a professional gaming reviewer, failing to mention them at all, coupled with the unscored review... well, you get what I'm calling a suspicious situation. You can say all you want that what you choose to put in the review is your call, and that's okay, but then you'll also get to hear people say what they think of the omission.
@scully1888 I'm sorry, but even if @Jeronan and everyone else here were wrong that you are too forgiving with 2k by not putting a score for this game, your complete lack of mention of the microtransactions in this game is suspicious at best. And simply ignoring this thing in the comments does not help. Please, clarify this situation for us because I don't want to lose my trust in NintendoLife-- there are way too many websites that praise to heavens everything Nintendo and this wasn't one of them until now.
Yeah, the Switch would also not replace the Wii U, Wii U production was not ending, the Classic line would not have more shortages and the DS would be a third pillar instead of replacing the Gameboy, the DS leaks were full of falsities and accuracies... How do people still take Nintendo's promises seriously? If anything, whenever they care to publicly deny a rumor instead of just ignoring it, it's MORE likely to be true in my book.
@MegaVel91 We are not the ones who have to prove anything. It's our money on the line. There are plenty of games to buy and plenty of games to play that we already bought. It's the publisher's job to convince us that their game is worth our money, not ours. If they want to give us reasons to distrust them, then don't be surprised when we decide we won't be the ones to do the leap of faith.
@MegaVel91 Many games have been completed blindfolded. Does that mean image output could be sold as DLC and that would be fair? Just because you can finish a game doesn't mean it's optimal. In fact, it's PAINFUL to play Zelda BotW without knowing where you've been. You are being way too strict in your definition of a complete game.
@MegaVel91 Yeah, sure. You also don't need the green line telling you where you've been in Zelda BotW. That's not a necessity. You can fit the whole map in your head easily.
@BispoSnake I've been preferring indies myself too. Apart from Zelda, this year I've been hooked to The Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Don't Starve and Crypt of the Necrodancer. AAA games have been way too samey lately, and the handholding in them is so much that I don't feel like I'm playing a game.
I Am Setsuna is not indie, though. It's a Square-Enix game. It's just low-budget.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I never played the original NES, only a bootleg called the Dynavision which featured controllers similar to the playstation ones. I prefered those to the SNES's. Might be my longer-than-average fingers.
It seems like the Switch's legacy will be, at the very least, that it was the console that finally made publishers price their digital games cheaper than the physical counterparts, albeit by cleverly differentiating just a little bit, like throwing in extra goodies or DLC that don't sum up to the price but serve to make both products technically different enough so that retailers can't complain.
@Moshugan I think they're fun, regardless. People say the same thing about turn-based battles as an excuse to turn tactical gameplay into button-mashing gameplay. They're both different things that different people like/dislike. Their origins is not relevant for those who like them.
It's a golden age for indie gaming. Some of the best games I've ever played are indie and are from the past three years.
However, it's an all-time low for AAA gaming. On-disk DLC, loot crates, micro transactions, amiibo are hurting the enjoyment of games. Quest markers, waypoints, minimaps, dialogue wheels are turning games into auto-playing things with the bare minimum interactivity. For exploration lovers, it's disheartening.
@Pupito $12.99 is just one amiibo. You need multiple amiibo to take full advantage of the game. And that's on top of the $39,99 you already pay for the game. And that's the best case scenario-- there's shipping and the scalper's fee. Please, don't pretend you don't know the problems everyone points out every time.
I have a better idea than working an extra shift: not buying this game at all. I won't support greedy business tactics with my money. I have this novel habit of putting my money where my mouth is.
@Pupito They can decide what constitutes a complete game. We can disagree. What are you gonna do about it? You are defending the publisher's freedoms while ignoring ours.
The reason we remember the good old days is because we lived them. It was a mere decade ago. What are you, 12? And even if we hadn't, those games are still available to play. We will always know what our money used to buy and how it good it was not feeling ripped off without even having started the game.
@jswhitfield8 Yeah, right? What's not to love about overpriced on-disk DLC with limited availability? They are totally not hurting our gaming experience, no way.
@Lewieboy124 Can you cite me your sources? The only thing I can find is a story about when Samsung accidently posted the Switch's RAM module's details on its website, and then took it down (probably because Nintendo asked). There's no official source that I can find citing the 4 GB figure. Even the Wikipedia page says this number without sources.
1) people who cling to one single sentence so as to not acknowledge the rest of his points.
2) people who don't remember the slow, painful death of the Wii in terms of third-party support.
3) people who get mad at someone for not knowing the specs of the Switch when Nintendo themselves has not disclosed them.
The Wii U is the last Nintendo system I am buying as long as Nintendo continues to ignore Brazil. Paying 400 reais (over 100 US dollars) for a game is insulting. At least the 3DS has a digital store. With the Wii U, we have to go through hoops to pretend we are from another country just to buy. As soon as we have a loadiine for the Switch, I'm changing my mind. Seriously, I am against piracy, but if you don't want my money, what the heck can I do?
@Kirk Think of the people who bought shares when the rise started and are selling now. They made tons of money. The stock market might look like exploitation of Capitalism, but it sure works.
@Jeronan I'm not going to jump through hoops to support a company which doesn't support my country either. Here in Brazil, we don't even have a local distributor anymore. Think the Wii U situation is bad worldwide? Imagine buying games at 120 dollars.

@Prizm What do retro games have to do with anything? Super Meat Boy is from the 7th generation. It's not a retro game.
