For those eagerly awaiting Metroid: Samus Returns, today brought some lovely news with the announcement of the handsome Samus Edition New Nintendo 3DS. There's also some footage of different areas, with Nintendo Minute pitching in.
Along with Sam from the Treehouse they go through some neat areas and also show the amiibo in action; we already know what they do, but now you can see it in practice.
It's a game that's shaping up rather nicely, with MercurySteam adding their own stylised touches to what is still a very 'Metroid' experience.

Are you excited about this one's release in September?

Man I need this.
Games like this make me glad I still hold on to my 3ds. I still kinda wish everything was ported to Switch now though. It's already my go to portable.
Really looking forward to playing this game never played metroid 2. Just recently finished a run through super metroid. I need to find a copy of zero mission too.
amiibo was a mistake.
Get ready, here comes the anti-amiibo task force!
I hate those muppets. If only a Metroid would eat their heads. SCamiibo are a filthy skidmark.
This is likely my most anticipated game in years, and I've been replaying the Metroid series in chronological order in preparation for it. I recently played Zero Mission, Prime and Hunters to 100% completion, and I've just got to do Echoes and Corruption before this game comes out (I will skip Federation Force, since Samus isn't the primary protagonist and I'm short on time, plus I just finished that game recently). It's kind of fun seeing the series progress in chronological order to get the full impact from Samus Returns and its expanded storyline when it releases. Also, I'm excited to revisit Super Metroid, Other M and Fusion afterwards to finish the story.
Can't wait for this,never played the original.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's hard to find a balance with amiibo. Either they don't have enough functionality, or they lock too much behind them. But I honestly think the most criminal part of all of this is the fact that there are two different versions of Samus that function differently. They shouldn't expect people to buy multiple versions of the same character. I thought the point of these things was that you would buy one figurine and it would work across all games that support that particular character. I don't want a dozen versions of Mario and Link just to unlock everything in games that support amiibo. The first ones I bought for Smash Bros. should work universally and these newer versions should only differ on an aesthetic level, not functionally.
This will be my last 3ds game.
I don't have issue with how the Amiibo are used. It's not like it's missing any levels or anything. Seems there's still a hard mode that's unlocked after completing the game once for those into that. Personally I barely have time to finish a game once on standard difficulty so I never utilise these hard modes.
Plus the two new Amiibos look amazing! So I'll be getting them anyway.
Pretty amped for this
@thesilverbrick Totally agree with you on the amiibo.
Hgggnnn...need this game NOW.
I can't even remember the last time I was this hyped for a game. This is my most anticipated game this year. Sorry, Odyssey.
August 15th: Sonic Returns
September 15th: Samus Returns
@thesilverbrick I also played through the series in chronological order! I finished my run late in June!
@Giygas_95 Glad to hear I'm not the only chronology-obsessed Metroid fan. I did the same thing with Zelda when they released the official timeline, but that proved to be a bit more complicated, given the split.
@thesilverbrick I was doing the same thing with Zelda recently. I did Skyward Sword (hero mode), Ocarina of Time 3D, played the very beginning and ending of Majora's mask just for the story, then Twilight Princess HD, and then BOTW Master Mode. I then jumped over to the adult timeline where I got up to the forbidden forest in Wind Waker and then my Zelda kick sort of burned out...I was gonna do the DS games as well as ALttP and ALBW, but I guess I'd had all the Zelda I wanted for now.
I love continuity though which is why I like series like Metroid and Metal Gear Solid. They have a pretty good continuity going for them.
@617Sqn That sucks that you'll be missing out on Etrian Odyssey V, Pokemon UltraSun/Moon and Radiant Historia remake.
@617Sqn
I've said that many times to myself. But Nintendo just keeps releasing games for the 3ds as if it is their last stand.
The new fight mechanics they added in this remake look great. However I hope aiming isn't as hard as it looks.
Kit and Krysta still need replacement...
I'm tempted to watch this footage...but don't wanna see much more of it before I buy and play it myself...
Hell Yes I am pumped for this game. It looks good and it feels oh so good to have 2D Metroid back. Now get us some Castlevania in 2D too Konami!
Where can I get the amiibo!?☹️
@Fearful-Octopus just buy it on wiiu it's a bargain
I am really excited for this game! I love Metroid type games and this looks great. The 3Ds is still my favourite handheld at the moment, I see the Switch as a homeconsole more than a handheld.
I have the collector's edition and all the amiibos pre-ordered. I beat Metroid on the mini NES just a few months ago, so I am stoked to play the sequel.
The "metroid detector" really shouldn't be behind an amiibo pay wall.
@Manjushri Never say never! Maybe Netflix series will renew interest in the game series? I hope bloodstained is cool too but it's an imitator. 3 GBA and 3 DS Castlevania games were good times though......Never thought they were going to 2D Metroid again either.
@sandman89 I forgot it was on Wii u vc!😅
haahaahah, "It's safe in your bedroom!"
@MoonKnight7 In fairness, amiibos ARE poopie.
@ga3tr0n
I find it mostly comical of how upset it makes some people. Amiibos either do too little, or they lock too much away. Either way, the same people complain about if it does too little, or lock too much away. So in that respect, yep, they're poopie. No one will ever agree on what an amiibo is actually supposed to do.
@MoonKnight7 I think it's a f***ing cheek that we're being charged extra money for the games we're already paying for. I have nowhere to store the bloody things and no desire to display them.
@ga3tr0n
I totally forgot about this discussion since it happened over a month ago, lol.
Hey, it's cool, don't get them then. Typically, they don't do too much, but I think the extra hard mode in the 3DS Metroid is going a bit too far with it, so I'll agree there. I'd say they should probably just stick with cosmetic outfits etc., but no matter what, there is always going to be unhappy people no matter what Nintendo does with them.
I'm not in it for what the amiibos actually do, but love displaying and collecting them. To each their own.
@MoonKnight7
Yeah, there's not been too much 3DS-related to bring me back unfortunately! That said, I did pick up Monster Hunter Stories, Cursed Castilla and Super Mario Land the other day.
I've got two young kids, so even if I wanted to display amiibos I simply couldn't. I guess the target audience is closer to their ages than mine!
I also had a take it or leave it attitude until there were Fire Emblem characters hidden away in Codename: STEAM.
@ga3tr0n
Haha, don't worry, Codename Steam flopped horribly, so the whole amiibo functionality has probably been almost entirely forgotten. Kind of a shame, I think, I really loved the game itself.
You picked up some good games! 3D Land almost single handedly saved the 3DS way back in 2011. You're in for a treat. Happy gaming to you and your kids!
Oh, I meant OG Mario Land. 3D Land was my pre-installed game. I just introduced the boys to Sonic - they love it and the girlfriend is not happy about it. We made a Tails with iron-on beads the other day; I'm hoping to steer them away from being games animals for just a little longer!
Massive pity about STEAM, as it was deece and I wonder whether any plans for a 3D Fire Emblem were shelved as a result of its reception.
All the best.
