Re: Cosmic Star Heroine Dev Explains Its "Frustrating" Experience Working With Nintendo

tsdenizen

Yeah, this is a bit unfair. Cosmic Star Heroine IS a good game, but it's one of MANY good games on Switch, many of which didn't get promoted by Nintendo. It's a port of a very traditional game that got okay reviews. Nintendo is going to focus on pimping out exclusives, new games, or proven hits. I hope that Cosmic Star Heroine does better (I'm sure it will once Limited Run inevitably does physical copies), but there are over 1000 Switch games and Nintendo can't promote them all.

Re: Win a copy of Crossing Souls

tsdenizen

This is how you generate good will. These guys make great games at reasonable cost, give discounts if you own their other games, and do generous (10 codes, not just 1) giveaways like this.

Re: Review: 2064: Read Only Memories INTEGRAL (Switch eShop)

tsdenizen

This game was such a great idea on paper, but as is, I can't stand it. Completely lacking in any tact in the writing, tons of technical issues, hardly any gameplay, etc. Plus the CEO... basically the PWR BTTM of video games in that they're a predatory hypocrite. I'd love a good "queer Snatcher", but this really isn't it for me.

Re: Nintendo Has Sold 19.67 Million Switch Consoles To Date

tsdenizen

Good numbers in a vacuum, but for investors, they probably wanted to see an extra 1-2 million hardware units sold. But they will sell an absurd amount at holiday with Smash and Pokemon. This year's been slow, but starting Winter going into next year, they should have another really strong period.

Re: Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Will Have Extra Requirements To Take On Gyms

tsdenizen

@Fooligan B2/W2 were excellent. Gen 5 was way more of an actual shake-up than this, especially B2/W2. The key system which allowed you to change difficulties was great, the medal system encouraged players to explore all the side stuff like Join Avenue and Pokestar Studios, again, mostly new Pokemon, Team Plasma was one of the best teams, etc. The first 5 gens are great (gen 1 has aged poorly, but they were the innovators), gen 6 kinda sucked, but I appreciate gen 7 for the shake-up in removing gyms in favor of trials. This one is just doing nothing for me so far.

Re: Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Will Have Extra Requirements To Take On Gyms

tsdenizen

@nessisonett I didn't say it was bad. But to call Sun & Moon too confusing is silly. And yeah, I'd prefer it if players actually had to develop memory of weakness, but telling them is hardly gamebreaking. What IS an issue is forcing players to be adequately prepared to its standard, rather than simply provided hints and tools to allow them to prepare themselves to their own standards.

Re: Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Will Have Extra Requirements To Take On Gyms

tsdenizen

@cyberlocc I don't expect it to be like Octopath. It never has been. But I played the original Red & Blue just fine when I was 7, when if you pick Charmander, you were gonna have to level and pick good moves, instead of the game essentially not even allowing you to mess up and learn naturally. Even in-game hints is fine. They've always done that. "Hey, rock is weak to grass and water. You might want to look into getting a Pokemon that can use those moves." But FORCING the player to be 'prepared' to the game's satisfaction makes the whole thing feel like going through the game's predetermined motions. Sun & Moon could only really be seen as confusing because of the absurd # of Pokemon at this point. But they had a lengthy tutorial section in the trainer's school. They blocked off areas you weren't supposed to go. They even told you Pokemon's weaknesses upon bringing up the move selection menu. As long as you can read, THOSE were handholding, especially compared to older Pokemon games, which were still kids games.

The standards have just dropped, and I'm sorry if you're offended by that idea. A kid's game can be an opportunity to teach, but this panders to the idea that you don't even have to make your own decisions, read the game text, or ever mess up. I don't think it's good for series vets, and I don't think it's good for kids either.

Re: Nintendo Says 3DS Will Keep Being Sold Unless Switch Becomes A "One-Per-Person-System"

tsdenizen

@Yorumi I suppose that's semi-feasible, but it would be awkward for a lot of games. They could maybe make it work better if they had made the Wii U gamepad compatible with the Switch to act as the bottom screen (like how the DS games were on the Wii U eShop). I guess they could still kinda make that happen with some sort of sync-able pad with a 3DS slot that worked a bit like PSTV.

Re: Kirby Star Allies Version 2.0 Is Now Available For Download

tsdenizen

@thesilverbrick they're all more or less the same length at launch as far as content goes. Star Allies is definitely the easiest of the four though, which means you'll likely be replaying stuff less. I often didn't get every code cube and rare sticker on my first playthrough of a level, whereas I never missed a rare puzzle piece or switch in Star Allies.

Re: Review: Detective Pikachu (3DS)

tsdenizen

It's not on Switch because this is a localization of an older 3DS game and updating it for Switch would've taken tons of work.

I love my Switch too, people. But hell, the 3DS is still a great portable. Not like you can't carry it around, and not like there aren't tons of other great games for it that warrant doing so. It was made with 3DS in mind (which has functions the Switch doesn't), so I'd probably get it for 3DS even if they did make a Switch port.

Complain about Luigi's Mansion not being on Switch. That one ACTUALLY makes no sense.

Re: Sega's Valkyria Chronicles 4 Is Marching Towards Nintendo Switch

tsdenizen

Great news. Really, really like the first one. If they can recapture that magic while fixing some of the balance issues that game had (early mid game got brutal, almost unfair, but once you upgraded your scouts to a certain point shortly after, it's way too easy to cheese the rest of the game), we'll have another marquee title.

Re: Out Today: L.A. Noire and Rocket League Lead the Way in Fresh Switch eShop Releases

tsdenizen

@BravelyDavid I've defended The Count Lucanor and Elliot Quest with regards to other issues (not necessarily regarding price, but other things). I just really like the game. I don't work for Nicalis. Cave Story+ was VERY overpriced. If I worked for Ludosity, I wouldn't be critical of Nicalis, which I am. They're bad at marketing, generally not good to UK gamers, price hike certain games, and don't update properly on delayed games. I personally think Ittle Dew 2 is worth the money I paid for it. I'm just sick of people looking at a trailer or something, not playing the game, and saying "that's not worth that much money". How would you know? You haven't played it. It's just this annoying entitlement that's permeated the gaming community that everything must immediately blow your mind with a 30 second clip and be dirt cheap, otherwise it's terrible garbage and you're being exploited as a consumer. Don't play it, fine. Or play it, if it sucks, trash talk it to the ends of the earth. But you're making all these "assumptions" that don't help anyone.

Regarding your point about Stardew, it's had physical releases elsewhere and has always been $15 digitally. That game is an incredible value. Ittle Dew 2 (not +) is digital only on Steam for $20. The + version is $30 digitally and physically on Switch because it has extra content exclusive to that version.

Re: Nicalis Is Bringing The End Is Nigh To Switch Just In Time For Christmas

tsdenizen

@SuperCharlie78 Ittle Dew 2+ has extra content not in the Steam version, about 75% more actually, so it's not really a mark up. They've done it on somethings, but really only Cave Story+ (which I completely agree should've been $15 digital) and maybe Tiny Barbarian DX (which had the Steam price go up with the Switch version and coincided with the game more than doubling in length, and is in my opinion worth the cost). Lumo's not sticking out to me right now, but it's nice they're dropping the price.

Re: Review: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (3DS)

tsdenizen

@Desa I've yet to play this, but it's Sun and Moon slightly different, with new and more stuff. You can gleam that from this and the 10/10 review they gave Sun and Moon, which while I did enjoy, was absolutely not a 10. I don't think ANY Pokemon game has been a 10, and this game clearly, and by the reviewer's own admission, isn't doing all that much to change things up. I'm sure it's fun, I'm sure I'll pick it up, but NL has been giving every major Nintendo release a 10 recently. A couple deserve it, but not all of them, and I can't imagine this is one of them.

Re: Out Today: L.A. Noire and Rocket League Lead the Way in Fresh Switch eShop Releases

tsdenizen

@NewAdvent well, then, you're wrong. Sorry. The Switch version has content the Steam version doesn't, so it costs more. Not hard to work out. Is it Stardew Valley level value? No. But it's not overpriced. Monopoly is overpriced. Stardew Valley is underpriced. Ittle Dew 2+ is accurately priced. In any case, no need to be mad about it. You'll either get it or you won't and no one is forcing your hand either way.

Re: Review: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (3DS)

tsdenizen

I'd have to guess this rating is "Ultra" inflated, but the original Sun and Moon were at least my favorites Pokemon games since Ruby and Sapphire. If this is on par, I'm down, but these 10s are being thrown around a bit too liberally, in my opinion.

Re: Review: Tallowmere (Switch eShop)

tsdenizen

@SwitchVogel fair enough, I'll think of this as the revised score then. I also personally agree with your assessment of the game. This isn't the first time this happened (Kirby 64 stands out), so I was just trying to get a beat on the NL philosophy regarding something like this. Thanks for clearing it up.

Re: Review: Tallowmere (Switch eShop)

tsdenizen

@faint that's true. But if a website like this doesn't have a cohesive message, what's the point? The only reason a review site has a purpose is to steer consumers in the right direction, and by Nintendo Life endorsing 2 very different opinions on the same thing, all it serves to do is confuse. It could be different if every reviewer scored each game and we could pick the one we trust the most based on our tastes, but they don't, so there should be a unified message. Otherwise it's just a scattered collection of stuff that holds no weight.
