Re: Guide: The Best Nintendo Switch Controllers

tebunker

No mention of the MagicStick NS? Which, while not an actual controller itself, allows you to use practically any other BT controller.

I prefer the Xbox 1 pad now over all the other with Switch Pro Second. The NS allows us to use whatever we like and there is a pass through to use a wited pad too

It really is amazing. They keep updating the firmware too

I've lost about 13 lbs so far doing this, eating better, obv calorie reduction helps, and doing the 100 pushups workout. Feel great and won't stop but lord almighty the game isn't that great.

It regularly misses inputs and you have to sometimes over move the controllers to get it to register. Music is lack luster, but hey I only paid $30 for it and that is less than a gym membership

@Mando44646 I would go with more of a 3D Dot Heroes knock off?

Supposedly it has been in development for a while and is coming to PC and Xbox. I mean I get most people don't like that Voxel look, but if done well, like 3d Dot Heroes it can be charming. This game looks like a mess, but I am interested in reviews.

Re: Review: Dragon Sinker (Switch eShop)

tebunker

@TheLobster

It's $10 on Steam and $15 on PSN, or you can play it on a phone or tablet with Ads, more in app purchases and no buttons.

I don't quite get how people cannot understand that mobile markets are just completely different/broken from console and PC. Yeah the game may be 'free' on mobile but you are paying for it in different ways. For many, paying for it to have full controller support and no ads is completely worth the costs.

This race to the bottom in mobile has completely screwed up how folks value software. A good game is a good game and should be paid for accordingly, whether that's giving up a couple minutes a day to watch ads, or paying some money for in app purchase, or just buying a game whole cloth.

Re: Rejoice, Soon You'll Be Able To Use Your My Nintendo Gold Points On The Switch eShop

tebunker

The amount of people complaining about a free loyalty reward program is insane. The fact that they do anything in this era of capitalism is amazing.

An effective %5 reward is solid.

Especially considering gold coin values were all over the map depending on what you were buying. Sometimes worth 10 cents a coin and sometimes worth less than 5.

As wel you earned coins on this weird tiering system. Now getting a straight % back based on the $ amount spent is simpler and easier to use.

Would I like more incentives? sure but hell if I am going to complain about an effective 5% back. Heck buy your Eshop points with a cashback CC at another retailer with rewards and you can certainly pile up multiple rewards for your purchases

@Crono1973 you're kidding right? Sorry dude, its a dead and unsupported platform. It is just odd for them to keep releasing stuff on it, specifically untranslated esoteric TG16 japanese rpgs.

It doesn't even make good business sense.

I mean why don't we still support Ouya, or the original DS etc etc. there comes a time where everyone has to move on. For the WiiU it was like 2014.

Re: The Town of Light: Deluxe Edition Is Coming Exclusively To Nintendo Switch This Spring

tebunker

@Ralizah Uh, looking on Steam it seems to be fine.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/433100/The_Town_of_Light/

You can get a good feel for the kind of game. I am also noticing a lot of negative review stop playing around 3-5 hours while the positive ones play a lot more. So maybe there is some kind of turning point for people.

Also, I would love to Nintendo Life to link to the steam page of any coming game that has one. Steam Reviews can be a good tool to judge the game. They're by no means perfect but I have generally been okay with games that trend on the positive side more than not.

Re: Soapbox: Dark Souls’ Ruthless Recipe Perfectly Suits Switch’s Evolving Audience

tebunker

@JoeDiddley So here is a great thing/secret about the Souls games. The difficulty is kind of like a smoke screen. It only seems difficult at first because the systems require a different / specific manner to interact.

But what really makes the series stand out is that From has made the games in such a way that you can find your own path inside of those interactions. Want to be a spell caster that dodges a lot and barely uses a sword? Sure go for it, and guess what? You can kick ass with that.

Want to be a giant tank that takes 1000 hits without falling in super heavy armor? Sure. You can do that.

Want to be a Pyromaniac that burns the whole world? Guess what? You can.

The real problems people have is that you are dropped in to the opening area and it only barely prepares you for going to the Undead burg. You walk in to that Undead burg and think, cool I got this, this isn't hard, and before you know it you're swarmed by 4 undead and bleeding out. Mainly because you got cocky and thought you could play outside of the mechanics.

That was me. At first. I sat at like the 2nd bonfire in that first area for almost a year trying to figure out how to play this damned game. I'd leave and come back, leave and come back. I couldn't grok it at all.

Then I restarted, and I restarted with a plan. I wanted to play in a specific manner, for me it was Medium Armor, Bastard Sword and Pyromancy. I figured out what stats worked best with what I wanted to do and then I slowly figured out how to balance being a sword master with burning undead for pleasure. Once I figured that out, once I stepped back and thought, okay this is what I am going to do and I stuck with it, I became addicted. I put nearly 80 hours in to DS1 on pc, including the DLC. That was one run. I then poured 70 plus in to Demon Souls, another 70 in to DS2, and I have like 70 plus in DS3, oh yeah I squeezed Bloodborne in too.

With each of those games I made a plan before just going in and winging it. So yeah, it can feel difficult at first because you don't really know what to do or how to do it, but once you take some time to understand how the gears work in the background you learn the interactions, the leveling and character builds and you never will feel like the game is cheap or too hard.

Alternatively, in your first run you can just souls grind a lot and go full str and vit and be a near unbeatable tank too. You can powerlevel a game like this. Not as fun though.

Re: Video: Rainway Dev Shows Off Cuphead Co-Op Running On Nintendo Switch

tebunker

@Minch I completely agree and said as much. It’d be a miracle for Nintendo to approve this.

However it does make one wonder. Valve had tried to push steamboxes a couple years ago and failed because they had no real unifying system/ os support etc. Imagine if they had teamed up with Nintendo and Nvidia on the switch. Yeah they and Nintendo would get less of a cut but it’d be amazing and Valave already has great streaming software. A steam box with Nintendo games would’ve been amazing, for consumers.

Re: Video: Rainway Dev Shows Off Cuphead Co-Op Running On Nintendo Switch

tebunker

So can we throw any question of legality out of the window?

There is nothing illegal or questionable going on here.

You have to own a copy of the game on a platform it is released on and then you stream it to a device.

I am not sure how anyone can think that anything illegal is going on. They aren’t hacking in game code, they aren’t modifying hardware to break encryption or copyright protection.

What the questions have to be are would Nintendo or any platform holder allow an application that allows people to stream games bought on other platforms on their own platform. Thats kind of a tongue twister but thats all we are talking about here.

It doesn’t make sense for Nintendo to allow this because no one would buy an indie on the switch again. Everyone would just find a cheap steam key and then stream it. Granted that means you’d have to be connected to wifi at all times so it would tether the Switch.

I just wanted to be clear. There is nothing illegal going on with with app. It doesn’t let you steal games etc. It’s more a matter that Nintendo would be pretty dumb to all it from a business standpoint.

Re: Video: Gear.Club Unlimited Gets A Tabletop Mode Test Drive On Switch

tebunker

I read elsewhere that these are the same devs who made Testdrive Unlimited?

Those were solid games. They are also saying that full online MP is coming too?

I get that this started as a mobile
port but you can tell it is much more than just that. I’d like to see how it performs in 4 player split screen, I would like to know what the roll out for MP is, and I’d like to know the full details on car upgrades etc.

I was reading about it in the latest issue of Game Informer last night, and my interest piqued the minute I heard it was the test drive unlimited devs. That means the basic racing should be pretty good.

Re: Moon Hunters Lands On the Switch eShop Next Week

tebunker

@Drac_Mazoku Well this happens primarily for two reasons, especially in smaller indies, Cost and Time, and those are related.

Many games like this use Algorithms for proc gen levels and what not beacuse it can save months and months of costly level design work. When done well it makes for a very nice and cohesive game. Not to mention random dungeons were/are part of the Rogue-lile genre.

But also look at the Diablo series. Every dungeon is randomly generated. People adore Diablo. Mainly because its gameplay and loot loops are great.

So back to indie games. A lot of folks have a hard time paying a lot for indie games. Even if these devs put in multiple years of work. Many of them are hamstrung by the markets weird determination to not pay more than $19.99 for independent games.

So to make a livable budget and deliver on time and have a game not price themselves out of market they make a design decision. It isn't a shortcut. It is a conscious decision based on $$$ and Time.

Developers can and should be using that time and money to really polish the core loops and the artwork with adding some special set pieces too.

I just would like people to stop calling these devs lazy or act like it is a short cut when in fact you could argue all decisions are shortcuts. If a dev had unlimited funds and time they could and probably would deliver more handcrafted adventures. It just doesn't make good sense to do so when they can't get players to pay more for that work.

Re: Rumour: Source Who Leaked L.A. Noire Switch Port Drops Hint That Grand Theft Auto V Is Next

tebunker

This is some shoddy reporting. In fact, you didn't even research this.

Verne made a comment yes, and then clarified it immensely in a following post or two.

He specifically said he has NO direct confirmation that it is coming. It is merely his hunch along side of the fact that he knows more is coming.

In fact he spent several posts backtracking the comment and clarifying. He even poked fun at how nintendo fan sites would read way too much in to this.

I don't have a problem with Nintendo life reporting it, I would just prefer you actually go to the thread and read All of Verne's comments.

No one should have any expectations of GTa coming based off this. Please people.

Re: Nintendo Download: 14th September (North America)

tebunker

@Fred13 I know there is an official release about it out there, saw the link on Gaf, but it boils down to what you wanted to do. Parts of the game would need to be downloaded etc.

But if you just wanted to play the base basketball game I am pretty sure they said you only needed 12 or 13 gbs. Its the story mode and stuff that eats up all the space now.

On a side note my 8 year old said both 2k18 and Fifa looked cool, so who knows i may have to get one or both.

Re: Pelda Pro Switch Case Aims To Make Your Dock Redundant

tebunker

@AlbertXi Please my man, don't say don't assume and then make assumptions and personal attacks.

Also don't put words in my mouth. You said that the switch dock shouldn't cost as much because it didn't have as much circuitry as a gba, as if that had any implications on actual costs. I merely pointed out reasons why it could be so expensive and even agreed that it was. You also support my claims when you convert pounds to USD, £45 is about $60, hmmm I recall typing that the Switch dock is about $20-$25 usd overpriced because you pay for Nintendo's name brand bs.

Please next time keep the passive aggressive childish blasts to PM. Unlike you I can and will back it up.

Also if you are trying to use Basic as an example? To show you are like a 50 year old dude writing flames on a Nintendo fan site? Cool you proved it. I am definitely no child or even a youngster, but even if I was that is no reason to be a jerk or to think you know better.

Re: Pelda Pro Switch Case Aims To Make Your Dock Redundant

tebunker

@AlbertXi well most of the stuff in a controller is older tech that nintendo has or can make larger buys of.

I don't think you understand how manufacturering works or costs. Newer tech will always cost more. Thats why a dock using USB C to HDMI and a USB C charger with power protection can cost as much as a Controller that is relying on a lot of older more mature tech with tweaks.

I agree that they are both expensive, I do not think they are a rip off. That's because I actually understand the tech.

Seriously go look up Power Protected USB C wall chargers on Amazon. Find me a well rated dependable wall charger for less that $25-$30. Then look up good USB-C to HDMI converters. The tech is new and not cheap because of that. Nintendo puts a $30 charger with a $35 convert and marks it up for their name brand. If you wanna argue the dock is about $20 too expensive we can talk, but you are ignorant of the costs to mfg and the costs of the tech.

Re: Pelda Pro Switch Case Aims To Make Your Dock Redundant

tebunker

@AlbertXi have you looked at the cost of a usb - c to hdmi converter? they aren't 'cheap' . It may have less circuits than a gba but it doesn't mean it doesn't do more complex things.

The real issue is that USB C is still fairy new and there wasn't a lot of already built solutions. So yeah the docks aren't cheap, but honestly looking at comparable generic parts it's not horrible. Alot of USB C chargers with the protection built in to Nintendo's charge cost ~$30 us, and the converters can cost around $30-$40. Add in the Nintendo surcharge er branding and yeah I can see why a new dock costs so much. I would hope that as the technology gets more widely adopted they can come down on pricing.

Re: ARMS Update Adds LAN Play and Arena Mode

@Bengals76

For some reason I felt you weren't/aren't telling the whole story. They replace/repair the joycons free of charge.

Did you want them to send you a new pair before sending yours in? Yeah they're gonna charge you there otherwise what keeps you from stealing the new joycons they send you? Usually in that instance they send you refurbs, place a hold/charge on your CC and then refund you when you send in the defective units.

Like I said, you aren't giving the whole story. I sent in both Left joycons I own and got them back in less than a week with no charge.

Re: Talking Point: The Wii U eShop is Raising Tough Questions on Quality Control

tebunker

@ThomasBW84 okay who pays for that? The play testing? Once you start charging developers for it you will see less and less ganes

Seriously this can be fixed really easily. Allow for more detailed reviews on the eshop. Right now it is very basic.

Second, and Nintendo kind of already does this, do not promote poor games on the front page or in press materials. Done.

Let the community curate and decide what is worthy or not. Nintendo should spend their time on more valuable things like making Virtual Console better, improving the backbone of the eshop. giving us a web accessible eshop etc.

It isn't and should never be Nintendos job to decided what is good or bad, let the market decide.

Re: New Fatal Frame Will Be Spooking The Wii U In Japan This September

tebunker

@Darknyht sad thing is we all know it but do they know it?

The key to having truly healthy system sales is to have a large varied library of games in all regions.

I truly think Nintendo got drunk on all the multi million sellers on Wii and forgot that having the niche titles helps a lot too. NES and SNES were filled with a variety if games and without full 3rd party support it is left to Nintendo.

And while FF may not be a system seller in a traditional sense having that variety is what could entice someone to buy the system. It could be the game that puts to person who was waiting for four or five games they want to make a purchase.

The thing is you never know and you cannot rely solely on the MK8s of the world to Carrie the load. You must have depth to truly push people into not only buying your platform but investing in to it.

Re: Review: Armillo (Wii U eShop)

tebunker

@MegaScizoig is on sale now why wait? It will actually be more expensive in a couple weeks.

As for the review I would say that it is spot on. Actually one of the more thorough reviews that caught how important the shop and going back to old planets is.

I got the opportunity to beta test the game and played quite a bit of it. Definitely a joy.

You will see how much more technically advanced it gets in the later stages.

Re: Wii U System Update 5.0.0 Now Live, Adds Quick Start Menu And GamePad Notifications

tebunker

@PinkSpider @nathatruc

Specifically it looks like they are throttling the power going to the USB ports during games etc. Wife would play MK8 and it would act like the drive didn't have enough power or became disconnected.
I had the HD connected with a Y USB adapter to the rear ports and moved them to the front ports. It worked for one test.

I also ran a test and moved a bunch of data to the HD with no problems, but god is USB 2.0 soooooo slow compared to 3.0.

So we shall see if this new quickstart is better or not, I may not use it.

Re: Feature: Kickstarter's Wii U and 3DS Campaigns - 12th May

tebunker

@SMEXIZELDAMAN @ronoh

Actually the cost is exactly the same. Do not look at the whole number but look at the difference between the cost of the previous goal and the goal you want. See how the PS4 is 20k higher than the previous? Notice how the Wii U is only 20k higher?

You can say that the PS4 and Vita got priority, and the devs have said that us only because Sony was out front on the game with early support.

Each step up the stretch goal ladder costs money, so the Wii U goal is actually just 20k additional funding for a port, not 200k. They wanted to be able to fit other things in before that port to reward backers and add more to the game. So yeah the priority could be higher but the additional costs are the same.

Am I making sense here? Because this is true for all kickstarters. You have to look at the cost to go from one goal to the next not the total goal amount, because each stretch goal takes money out of the pot. I really wish developers who go kickstarter would restructure how they show stretch goals to better illustrate this.

Re: Festival of Magic Kickstarter Relaunches With a Fresh Name

tebunker

@Melkac @Josaku @Action51

Stop, go back to the kickstarter site , and Read.

Okay. first and foremost. This IS coming to WiiU, it always has been, Nintendo reached out to them very early in development. Nintendo was very impressed by them at PAX

Second, it is a Kickstarter campaign, they actually have a lot of outside funding this is the last stretch. If this campaign is successful then WiiU is guaranteed this game. Actually it pretty much has always been guaranteed this game.

lastly, and most importantly, Who cares if it comes out on other systems? Indie titles like this aren't going to drive folks to buy the WiiU, and being exclusive is stupid for an Indie developer. Period. Buy good games on the WiiU, do not care if they are released elsewhere. You will be happier when you reconcile this. Be happy we have the opportunity to get a good game. I mean, heck it was gonna come out on PC and bunch of other stuff too, so why not hope they can make more money. Also, remember that the last kickstarter didn't have the One and 4 on it, and they failed to get funding. SO Again, you should never ever ever ever care if a game is coming out on another platform as long as it comes out on a platform you own. Just support the games you like on the platforms you like, and be happy.

Re: The Next Batman Game Is Arkham Knight, And No, There Won't Be A Wii U Version

Goto Nintendo new site for Nintendo news, sees a news item for product not announced for Nintendo system. How is this news? Yeah it sucks, hopefully there is a port, but are we going to see this everytime the WiiU gets passed up on an announcement because that's going to get annoying and is pointless.

Also as fans/gamers we need to stop worrying about what we aren't getting and focus on what we are getting. It takes too much energy to care about things I may never see. If it comes it comes.

One of the Devs was posting over at Neogaf and specifically stated that, at the least, Wii U will have a really awesome 2p mode local with one on Gamepad other on Screen. He wants to make sure local is ,and if they can get online in before launch they will. Otherwise they will more than likely do a post launch patch for online. So it looks like we will have online play, but more odds are it will be post launch add on.

@uncha1n3d
I'm going to do it, I'm going to feed the troll, and not nicely. Seriously dude? Do you even own a Wiiu? And if so, why? The gamepad is one of the best things. You obviously haven't played enough games or used the system truly if you make the complaint of having to look down at the second screen. Play Deus Ex or AC IV with the gamepad, it is amazingly different putting all of the hud on the pad. When its done smartly it shows.

Also, only a person of lowly intelligence would compare being able to use the multiple hundred dollar add-ons of using smartglass or vita for second screen functionality to the gamepad.

Re: Wii U "More Than Capable" Of Providing The Core Project CARS Experience, Says Developer

tebunker

I am on this game like a fat kid on smarties, even if it is just a little above average. I want to support games like this and developers who put forth the effort. Also I want to show that if I dev reduces risks by doing a kickstarter they can make their games for all platforms and still make money.

I want to see more and more self published or small published games. I have grown tired of over produced mass market AAA titles. They are good for what they are, but we have lost the meat and potatoes of video games, the mid games. We are entering a generation where it is either indy or AAA and we need a middle ground and I think projects like this can work.

Re: GamePad High Capacity Battery Now Available in North America

@Gamecube5f

You do realize that even if you bought a launch WiiU and then registered it on Club Nintendo that you just extended the warranty another 90 days, meaning the system is in warranty 1 year plus 3 months from the day you bought it. Assuming it was a launch unit from November of last year then you have until February.

I couldn't care less about the subject here.

Re: Review: Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag (Wii U)

tebunker

This game runs great, don't know what the reviewer witnessed. I have rarely seen a hiccup, and I have fought with as many as 8 ships at once. Digital Download here, love the game. Solid 9/10, because of the need to have the character hook and latch to do the parkour type moves you can get stuck or repeatedly run up the wrong wall. It is a minor issue with this type of game, it is extremely difficult to make it so the player can easily hook on to stuff while making it so they don't needlessly hook on to everything.

Re: Paradise Lost: First Contact Leaves Wii U Stretch Goal Till Last

tebunker

Re: Paradise Lost: First Contact Leaves Wii U Stretch Goal Till Last

tebunker

I don't think it means anything and that this was a piss pot grab of an article. Plenty of other kickstarters have had the wiiu be a main platform or one of the earliest stretch goals. All that it means is that it costs money to develop and port games and this developer in general doesn't want to do a half butt job with a Wii I release.

The only other thing that I would like to know, is if all of these devs know about Nintendo's free Unity license program. This could help alleviate some dev costs and lower the goals, but not to be mean, I don't expect that kind of reporting here, in these types of articles.

Re: Review: Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut (Wii U)

tebunker

Great title definitely worth the $50. Seriously. Stop worrying about how much it costs elesewhere and just focus on what it will cost you to play the definitive version of the game. Well worth the price and the fact that it comes with the strat guide that you pull up on the gamepad mid game is awesome and WiiU only.

Also, I would not be surprised if this doesn't have a big retail prescence. Preorders generally drive what buyers order for systems. Gamestop seems to have ordered roughly 1 copy for every store in the states. You can just as easily go digital or get it on Amazon or any other website. I went digital for the 10 percent back. Again, if you are on the fence and can afford it, go get it, send the message you want these games
