Re: First Impressions: Kid Icarus: Uprising

moosa

@33 Check this out okay... Go pick up your DS right now. Hold the left side in your left hand, the stylus in your right, and then... support the right side of the console with the rest of your right hand. Whoaa. I actually like playing Hunters reclined on my bed, with the DS resting on my front, and just slip my right pinky behind the top half of the DS to comfortably support it.

@40 A little part of me inside dies every time I hear someone say that Metroid Prime Hunters is unplayable.

Re: First Impressions: Kid Icarus: Uprising

moosa

Why on earth are they using a deadzone/pivot type aiming system instead of a 1:1 setup like any DS shooter? It's FAR more accurate and responsive!

Also I don't understand why people complain about stylus aiming. It is not that difficult.

Re: First Impressions: 3DS Operating System and Built-In Software

moosa

We noticed that the 3D effect looked to be set pretty low, but we were unable to find out whether viewers will be able to crank it up notably or if it's as binary as we found it to be.

The 3D slider won't be able to adjust the 3D effect of movies or photos taken, essentially anything pre-recorded. The slider relies on the fact that games are rendered in real-time and therefore the effect can be manipulated. How much depth you see in pre-recorded content will depend on the people creating the content. (Info via Iwata Asks interviews)

Re: Iwata: 3DS and NGP will Appeal to Different Target Audiences

moosa

I don't understand the reasoning to "getting both." You could buy like 10 games for your 3DS with the money spent on just the NGP hardware. And unless the 3DS ends up sorely lacking in quality titles to play (and what are the chances of that?), I think you'd have to either be foolish, prideful, or rich to decide to buy both. I don't know where gamers get this weird idea about needing to own all the platforms when they don't own nearly all the games worth playing on any one of them.

Re: 3DS Too Full of Gadgets to Make a 3DS Lite Possible

moosa

@1 Don't just assume it's a simple matter of Nintendo not putting in a bigger battery. Current battery technology is a big limiting factor. If Nintendo could have gotten away with a higher capacity battery without making the machine $50 pricier and 50% bulkier, I'm sure they would have.

Re: Reggie: Steel Diver Makes Up for Lack of Zelda at Launch

moosa

Steel Diver is a tough sell... I think I can see the appeal in it, and you probably have to see it in person to really understand, but Nintendo really hasn't given us anything to get any average gamer interested in this game. It still looks a bit more like a "toy" than a full game experience that I'd pay $40 for, so it might be more interesting if it were offered at a budget price like $20 (although it would be unlike Nintendo to do so). I will say I'm interested in how the game turns out, and I'll be looking forward to the reviews, but I'm sorry to say that I wouldn't be so interested in this one game if one of the other games I want were within the launch window...

Re: Rodea the Sky Soldier Flying to Wii and 3DS

moosa

Everyone, you can see the pointer being used to control movement. Just a hint.

I don't know why people are comparing this to Sonic. I see nothing resembling a sonic game, aside from something very remotely resembling a "homing attack," which is hardly enough to make a game Sonic-like.

Re: Review: R-Type (Game Boy)

moosa

@13 Different people have different tastes in shmups. Just because it's not your favorite series or favorite type of shmup gameplay doesn't mean its not worthy of respect, even today. Yes, R-Type is very old now, and that only makes it all the more meaningful that many out there, including myself, still see the original game as a masterful piece of shmup gaming. Shmup gaming has certainly evolved, but I think you're exaggerating on how much it's "improved" since the 16 bit era. Yes, shmup developers have figured out some of the potential weaknesses in common shmup design and found ways to work around them, but a fun shmup is always a fun shmup. I still have more fun playing the original Star Soldier than I do most more recent shmups I've played. The shmup genre is not trendy where everyone's just waiting for the next big thing to start playing; on the rare occasion when a true shmup classic is born, it remains a classic forever.

Re: No, You Cannot Fight as Samus in Dead or Alive: Dimensions

moosa

Why does everyone think that Team Ninja ruined Other M? The game was directed by the same guy who was responsible for every other Metroid game outside of the Prime series.
Further, why do people think Team Ninja is crap? I'm not a DOA fan, but its far from the worst fighter out there, and Ninja Gaiden was a phenomenal game.

Re: No, You Cannot Fight as Samus in Dead or Alive: Dimensions

moosa

@Yosher Well the translation looks slightly rough, but that does seem to make more sense than what I was thinking.

@kurtasbestos That was the only thing that had really piqued my interest in this game, so it's really not all that dumb. Ultimately I'm sure I would have saved my money for something I felt more worthwhile, but seeing Samus pop up definitely made me feel as though I needed to play it.

Re: Features: NES Characters, Then and Now: Part One

moosa

Kirby Air Ride is such an AMAZING game. Perhaps not 10/10, but it's incredibly unique and infinitely replayable. It leaves a pretty odd first impression but once you get into it it's an amazing piece of software.
Perhaps slightly off-topic but it had to be said!

Re: Review: Biorhythm (DSiWare)

moosa

So all you do is give it your date of birth and today's date and it shows you all your calculations? And I suspect that it uses your name as some kind of randomizing factor... assuming you don't believe the name you're given affects your biorhythms. Anyways, needless to say, any two people who happened to have the same name and birth date would get 100% identical results.

Re: Review: Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition (Wii)

moosa

I think its silly for people to argue about whether or not the collection is worth it. You can only decide that for yourself. Arguing because someone else found it worthwhile while you didn't is just foolish. There are very legitimate reasons both ways.
I just wasn't happy with the review. I'm sure there are other similar reviews around the internet. It's like buying a Madden game and writing a review about how they should have included basketball. We all knew what was included in the package long before this came out.

Re: Review: Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition (Wii)

moosa

I'm sorry, but this isn't a review, it's a complaint. Reviewing a game based on what it isn't rather than what it is is one of the absolute worst mistakes you can make as a reviewer. Just tell everyone what IS included and they will be more than capable of understanding what ISN'T in the box, and then tell us about the quality of what IS there, please.

Re: Features: Don't Touch my Samus: Metroid's Controversial Turn

moosa

Finding worse writing/voice acting is easy as pie, assuming you've played a few games over the years. Video games have never been known for excellent acting. Watch this and you'll see how a lot of games have ended up over the years:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDGAouCb5gU&feature=related
Finding a bad storyline isn't difficult per se, it just doesn't stand out as much, as most bad storylines in videogames just bore you and you don't really care as long as you can get to the next level.
The VAST MAJORITY of the time, the more dramatic a story in a videogame tries to be, the more it fails in content and delivery. Other M is very dramatic for a videogame, and honestly it holds up better than you could expect.

Re: Features: Don't Touch my Samus: Metroid's Controversial Turn

moosa

There are SO MANY games out there with worse storylines, worse writing and worse voice acting than Other M... People are completely out of control in how they're picking away at this one game. If just about any other game was put under so much scrutiny, it wouldn't hold up much if any better. They took a bold move in trying to portray a character that was more than just a generic soldier/action hero in a videogame, and apparently the videogame community isn't capable of handling that. It isn't perfect, but so what?

Re: Resident Evil: Revelations Returns to Series' Exploration Roots

moosa

Wow... I guess the "cool" thing now is to act like RE4 was a mistake and that all the games should be exactly like they were in the first place instead of innovating and gaining new ground. How many times can you play the same game with a different storyline and be satisfied? I call BS on some of these comments. RE4 was the best thing that ever happened to the series.

Re: Features: Don't Touch my Samus: Metroid's Controversial Turn

moosa

Thanks for writing this. You're right that Samus has always been this way, we just haven't seen it out in the open in previous games. Oddly enough people seem to WANT her to be a generic, cold-hearted, one-dimensional Master Chief with boobs.
Anyways you didn't mention the official Metroid Manga at all, which reveals so much about Samus' life growing up and her existing character. Her reason for losing it at the sight of Ridley in Other M is that this pterodactyl guy killed her parents and everyone she knew, and ate their bodies in front of her, WHEN SHE WAS THREE YEARS OLD. Unfortunately, the thing that makes this reaction hard to believe is the fact that she's already faced and defeated this same monster a number of times prior to Other M, but everyone just thinks "NO! Samus is a chill badass killing machine, she would never freak out like that!"

Re: There May Never Be Another Smash Bros. as Hardcore as Melee

moosa

@Digiki To be clear, I've never played Smash competitively, only for fun. Also I wasn't talking about "spamming" at all, apparently I just used a word that means something a bit different over the pond and the mods had to edit it. What I was trying to say is that I can appreciate the slight reduction in speed for Brawl because it lets you play with your head a bit more, although I certainly had no complaints during my time with Melee.
The thing everyone needs to understand here is that the game dynamics change depending on the skill level of the players. What may be balanced between players of one skill level may not be so much with players at another skill level. In Smash, the range of competent skill levels is huge compared to other fighters, so its an important concept to consider. The beauty of Smash is that it takes very little time for a new player to gain competency and have all the game's moves available to him/her. I think one of the main things Sakurai was getting at is how the most complex aspects of Melee divide the most hardcore gamers from the rest. Smash has always been a game you could load up with a bunch of friends that don't own the game and have a blast, even if as the experienced player you're doing the winning most of the time. But as soon as you pull some secret voodoo techniques out of your rear like wavedashing, which they could never hope to replicate, it breaks the magic where you're no longer beating them with the same moves that they can perform.
Gamers who played Melee lament the reduced speed because it feels immediately less exciting, but what I believe that they don't realize is that, for the vast majority of gamers, it also enables them to get a deeper game out of Brawl where they have the chance to focus more on the accuracy and timing of their movements and play more intelligently.
I think the number one reason people complain about things in Brawl is because other people do rather than from their own experience. It is a little different, which immediately rubs most people the wrong way, and then suddenly all those things everyone was making a fuss about on the forums becomes real to them. Rather than taking the time to learn the nuances and get a feel for how to play the new game, they complain about how such-and-such is imbalanced, even though they're not nearly of the skill level that such an issue would effect them. It is not hard at all to HAVE FUN playing Brawl if you can just turn off all those outside voices complaining about the game and experience it for what it is. I personally would take a game of Brawl over Melee any day because I simply enjoy it and its new features more, and I don't care what other people have to complain about.

Re: There May Never Be Another Smash Bros. as Hardcore as Melee

moosa

@89
The vid you showed wasn't demonstrating anything broken at all. It's simply showing ledge grab distance. I wouldn't be surprised if they made it slightly larger for characters in Brawl, but there's nothing broken about it.
The worst thing about Melee was the endless Fox on Fox battles that bore the living hell out of me.

Re: There May Never Be Another Smash Bros. as Hardcore as Melee

moosa

I loved Melee, and played it for hundreds of hours.
I also loved Brawl, and played it for hundreds of hours.
I wish people would stop complaining about Brawl simply because it's DIFFERENT.
Just because Melee plays a bit faster doesn't make it a better game. I prefer having room to think about my game over a full-on spam fest, and I'm no casual. Melee was broken in some ways, and obviously not balanced, which led to people taking the hardcore approach way too far and taking all the fun out of the game. This is what Sakurai was really talking about. Brawl still has tons of depth and room for the hardcore players to master it, and at least 95% of people who whine about the game never put enough hours into it to be able to properly appreciate it.

Re: Review: Call of Duty: Black Ops (DS)

moosa

This looks great. I sure hope that Nintendo has the balls to put NST back on a Metroid Prime Hunters game for the 3DS though. That was the epitome of portable first person shooting gameplay.

Re: Rumour: Cell Chip Could Power Wii Successor

moosa

I can't believe you guys took the floppy disc thing seriously.

We know that Nintendo wants the Wii 2 to be surprising – the inclusion of a chip capable of powering a PlayStation 3 would certainly fit the bill.

I think it would be pretty unfortunate if the successor to the Wii couldn't top a system that launched at the same time as the Wii in horsepower.
