Re: Splinter Cell Creator Tom Clancy Passes Away Aged 66

Vince Flinn died at a young[er] age recently as well. We are loosing our great war fiction novelists!

RIP, Mr. Clancy.

@Pichuka97
There isn't an N64/PS1 Splinter Cell. Unless you're talking about Rainbow Six, which isn't the same thing at all. Splinter Cell didn't come around until the GC/PS2 era.

Re: Poll: Would You Buy Grand Theft Auto V On Wii U?

mikeyman64

I'm stuck between 360/Ps3 and PC. I played IV on 360 only because someone gave it to me, but I'm much more a fan of PC games. Better potential graphics, which for this game is a big plus.

Best part about GTA games = driving, imo. I spent most of the 100s of hours I played 3 and 4 driving around, jumping ramps, dropping sticky mines, and causing general mayhem.

Re: Review: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist (Wii U)

mikeyman64

The way I read the conclusion was 'It's basically the same thing as Conviction'.
I truly love this series, Pandora Tomorrow being my favorite, and I can honestly say that, even though they are fairly entertaining, the newer games just don't make the cut. I hate it when developers push too hard for the median, sullying games in the process.

After reading some comments from other players, it seems that the review may have been a bit off.

Anyone here that has an appreciation for the old playstyle (stealth and timing strategy) played the game yet?

Funny how they showed Link finding a Triforce shard. It's like they knew people were talking about that part of the game. The Triforce hunt was actually one of my favorite parts. It took a while, but the very open-world-esque feel of the quest made it really fun. The fast sail will make it better too.

I'm still disappointed that they didn't just make the GamePad the Tingle Tuner. How else are we supposed to find the statues and make phat stacks (to pay for chart deciphering with)!?

Re: "No Plans" For Ambassador Program Following Wii U Price Cut

mikeyman64

$50 (14.29%) honestly isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things. If it were the $80, 32% price drop of the 3DS, then it would be a bigger deal.

In the end, Nintendo is a company. Companies, no matter how much they are liked (Huge Nintendo fan here), do lame things from time to time for the sake of their pocketbooks. The questions are: A) Did they really need to do it (only an analyst with numbers could really tell), and B) was it really that impactful on us, the loyal consumers? Obviously an answer we all have to make on our own, as many of you have, but it's definitely worth taking a step back and looking at the nitty-gritties.

All that being said, I'm only really bummed that I didn't get the cool Zelda edition Wii U...hopefully I'll be able to find a comparable decal set on Etsy sometime soon...

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Planning a Wind Waker HD Hardware Bundle

@unrandomsam

1: Apple gets great prices due to massive contracts from the millions of computers they are guaranteed to sell based upon proven market records.

2: SSD technology doesn't double along-side price. It's more of an exponential growth, so 64gb for $20 doesn't mean 128gb for $40. More like $60 or more.

Re: Feature: A Brief History of Pikmin

mikeyman64

My goal is to beat my Pikmin 1 12-day record before 3 gets to the US... wish me luck. I think the all-time (and best possible) is 1 days. 3 days are blown by the first and last level, so that leaves 7 days to get 27 pieces! O.o

Re: Aonuma Is Growing "Tired" Of The Zelda Formula And Wants To Ring The Changes

mikeyman64

Have we been disappointing yet? I say let the man do what he wants. Everyone freaked out (including me) when Wind Waker came out looking like a cartoon, but now it's a favorite of many, including the original skeptics.

The image I had in my mind for Twilight Princess when it was in the making was a sort of Elder Scrolls setting. Nothing too insane, like with 200+ hours of gameplay, because that would almost require player customization to keep people interested, but something shorter that you could explore more free-form and do a bunch of side quests.

GTA would be a great example. Not including the crudeness or vulgarity/violence, you could make a vast Hyrule with a main quest line but TONS of other little things to do.

That being said, it's been done before. Since Aonuma said he would prefer to do something different himself, I would rather wait and see what he can come up with.

Re: Nintendo Wins Another Court Battle with R4 Cartridge Manufacturers

mikeyman64

@ferthepoet "In principle you should be allowed to sell any device that serves a legitimate purpose even if it can also be used for illegal purposes as long as you do not advertise the potential illegal use."

Now there's a decent basis for an argument about another, more recently released, product. But, to adhere to the rules, I'll stay on topic.

Nintendo was probably able to provide evidence to show that they had suffered significant losses over the creation and sales of these devices. Not to mention there were several other companies claiming the same shenanigans. I'm no lawyer though, so I couldn't say.

I really wish there was a way to conduct an honest pole to see how many people actually make "backups" and and use "homebrew." I used to meddle with homebrew applications back in the early DS days, but the community was anything but flourishing.

Re: Feature: Animal Crossing StreetPass Event Brings 3DS Owners Together

mikeyman64

@Nibelilt You could pack your 3DS really well and ship it to a friend in another country then have him/her ship it back to you. Just leave it on and asleep and have your friend charge it before sending it back. I might cost some $$$ but think of all the street passes you would get from driving around in the delivery truck!

Re: Eiji Aonuma - The Wind Waker HD is a "Test Case" for New Zelda Wii U Title

mikeyman64

@CowLaunch Half-life 2 was arguably sullied by episodic releases. They never even released the last episode because they got caught up in making the 3rd major game, at least that's what we think. Episodes get in the way of a lot of things, unless you completely revamp your process. There's so much pre/post producing to do, instead of breaking a game into 4ths, it's more like breaking it into 4, 40% pieces making you do 60% more work than just a single release.

Honestly, I still feel like Skyward Sword just came out. I'm not quite sure why people don't just enjoy the idea of an HD remix of an old favorite and stand-by for the new one...

Re: Nintendo Defends Influx of New Mario Titles

mikeyman64

@unrandomsam If I were "quite young" wouldn't I have thought the opposite having only seen the more recent releases? My comment is one of an long-time fan, and also of someone who likes fresh ideas as much as the next person.

My point is simple. Over the past, oh lets say 12 years to make it easy, Nintendo has made both new characters and gameplay styles as well as embellished upon old ones. While there have been new ideas, some successful, like Pikmin or Animal Crossing, and some unsuccessful (marginally) like Battalion Wars or Chibi Robo, they have always had fall-back games, if you will, such as Zelda, Mario (and his plethora of activities) and Metroid, to name a few, that stood on their own little pedestals.

What appears to be happening these days, at least in my eyes, is Nintendo has merged a lot of their new ideas with old faces. They may be doing this intentionally, or they may not even realize it.They could have made "Mario Vs DK" with brand new characters, but they didn't, and the result is, over several years, the watered-down feeling we get with all the new Mario releases. It removes the special feeling of a "new" Mario game coming out, because it's most likely the 4th similar release that quarter.

The best example I can think of is what Aonuma said here:
"...every time I come up with some good new ideas, they end up being used in a Zelda game!"

Another potential problem is the innovative direction they have been taking their hardware. All of these new ideas, like the Wii and Wii U have caused Nintendo to make games that either totally surround the new hardware or are the same with a couple of differences (read: NSMB). This could have been partially to blame for the surplus of stale-feeling IPs over the past 7 years. This isn't to say that Nintendo's hardware design is bad (I've been enjoying my Wii U), but it is potentially the reason many fans are getting this infamous feeling of stagnicity (made-up word).

A solution to all of this would be have Nintendo isolate their ideas more, which would probably make them work harder on the main-series games to make them better while having fun with "new IPs" and fresh ideas in other areas. Or they could just keep doing what they're doing and tone down on the Mario Bros releases a bit.

Re: Ouya Heralds Emulation By Tweeting Image of Super Mario Bros.

mikeyman64

@Pierceton I can understand wanting to play an old game, that is sitting on my shelf, on my new console for free. But let's be honest, it costs companies money to port games. The primary reason Sony can make VC games with cross-platform licenses is because their hardware has very similar software design at the core, something that Nintendo should be and indeed is working on achieving.

I also find it interesting how your early arguments were "it can do more than emulate" and now you are defending illegal emulation in the guise of "anti-greed."
