Re: Ouya Heralds Emulation By Tweeting Image of Super Mario Bros.

mikeyman64

@Pierceton Free the game? That sounds a bit... piratey. Do we have some sort of "right" to use someone else's intellectual property? Of course they're doing it for advertisement. 'Buy our thing, play all of these games!' It's like the old PowerJoy, only using android to keep from releasing hardware with actual pirated data installed on it. They just advertise the potential.

The idea of the Ouya is very cool. I just don't think the thing has a market because the only reason you would play it is to either play phone games with a controller (pointless?) or download emulators and roms, which, we can all agree, is less-than-legal.

Re: Ouya Heralds Emulation By Tweeting Image of Super Mario Bros.

mikeyman64

@Pierceton I think most of us understand that these people don't make the emulation software. What is going to be very hard for them is to advertise without blatantly stating that this device can (and is meant to) be used for illegal activity.

I think most of the downvotes here come from those who have seen things like the GP2X go down the same road and get thrown by the wayside.

Re: EA: We're Not Writing Off Wii U

mikeyman64

That quote seemed very pretentious. Like he was trying to pat the little heads of the Nintendo fans and tell us 'not to worry, you're just not quite as important as these other things.'

Re: Nintendo "Would Consider" Making Free-To-Play Animal Crossing Entry

mikeyman64

@grimbldoo
I agree that the weeds are a hassle. In the GameCube version there was a ghost you could talk with late, late at night. I think it was around 2 or 3am, and he would ask you to do something. If you helped him he would grant you a wish, one of which was picking all of your weeds. No idea if he's come back in the newer games.

Re: Video: Reggie Shows Off Wii U to Jimmy Fallon, Hilarity Ensues

mikeyman64

To everyone speculating about the "realism" of Fallon: it's all about the money. Jimmy might really love the Wii U, or he may be completely BS'ing. Either way, Nintendo gets a much needed explanation to a reasonably large audience and Fallon gets payed for it. If it felt awkward, it's because rehearsed enjoyment always feels odd.

Re: Nintendo Falls Under Further Pressure Regarding Conflict Mineral Policies

mikeyman64

It's definitely surprising to see that Nintendo ranks so low. However, it is the world we live in, and is no reason to put shame on the company. Everyone does it, and quite frankly, most companies that try to be better at illegitimate labor most likely do so simply for good PR.

That's not to say I do not value the lives of those forced to work in the mines, but I think changing anything will take a lot more than getting angry at a company that doesn't handle the situation quite as well as others.

Re: Nintendo "Would Consider" Making Free-To-Play Animal Crossing Entry

mikeyman64

@grimbldoo Funny, that's one of the primary aspects of the game that makes it so original and fun.

I would honestly hate a F2P AC. Reason being, you would have to buy everything with $$$. Want that couch? Easy, buy this DLC pack for $2.99. Want a fishing rod? Simple! Snag the Tools'n'Stuff pack for $5.99!

It's much simpler to pay the, very reasonable, $34.99 and get everything.

Re: Iwata: We Are To Blame For Poor Wii U Sales

mikeyman64

Anyone comparing Wii U to anything else doesn't get the term "apples to oranges."

Plus, I think what N is trying to do is revive the market for themselves instead of cut the price. If they just cut the price, the Wii will still have the same, unimpressive current/next gen image, but it will be cheaper. If they can brainstorm and figure out a killer way to reintroduce the U to the market, then the ball will really be rolling.

Apart from some giant-killing PR, games are really the only thing that can do this.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Wishes Nintendo Had "Done More" With Zelda II

mikeyman64

Zelda II is a game for those players that enjoy a truly challenging game.

This game will make you want to break glass and eat it before you pick the controller back up and head ALL the way back to your dungeon.

I personally loved the game, and still think it was very well made. However it is NOT for the faint of heart.

Re: Pachter: Without Third Party Support Nintendo Fans May End Up Buying A Second Console

mikeyman64

So, when was every console required to have the same games? You buy a console that has the games you want. I bought a Wii U a couple months ago, and I will likely buy a PS4 as well, because they will have different libraries (but seriously, Xbox one? Go home, you're drunk).

I love how people like Patcher make it sound like 3rd party support is the ONLY reason to buy a console. I don't really remember the last time I purchased a Nintendo product (or Sony or Microsoft, for that matter) to play a specific 3rd party game. I buy for the appetizing exclusives, and then play whatever else I want that comes out. Heck, I bought my 360 for Banjo and Gears of War.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Won't Feature Cross-Platform Play Between Wii U and 3DS

mikeyman64

I don't really know what to say about this one.

On one hand, I suppose it was nothing less than vastly assumed that the games would have some inter-connectivity, being simultaneously released and, essentially the same game, and the fact that it isn't is a bit of a bummer.

On the other hand, it was never promised, and I honestly see little need for the feature anyway. Pros would be: synced stats, customizable character features and possibly playing friends online. Major con would be huge sacrifice in creativity and experience (having two of the same game) in order to accomplish all of the above.

The way it is, at least if you buy both you will be getting two different games.

Re: Retro Studios Working on "One Major Project at a Time"

mikeyman64

Understandable. Retro is still a fairly small subsidiary, so working on only one major AAA title at a time is understandable. Let's be honest, have they failed to please yet?

Let's just hope that they take their time with the next game, and let's just hope it's another Metroid game.

Re: Zelda Series Timeline Wasn't Planned From the Beginning

mikeyman64

Yeah, this isn't really news.

I was honestly not too excited about the Hystoria. It's an incredible book, but the timeline felt rushed and non-too silky smooth. Reason being, of course, is that they emler's glued it together due to fan demand.

I wish they had left it alone, personally. :-/

Re: Miyamoto: Consumers Should Have Access To Their Games "For A Long Time"

mikeyman64

This is one of the major reasons I still have all of my games.

Being somewhat of a collector (nothing impressive, just my stuff and some), and a nostalgia nerd, it's honestly hard for me to even buy VC games just because I would rather be playing it on the original.

Call me old fashioned, but there's something about reaching for that dusty cartridge or popping open that DVD case to play a favorite, and knowing that you won't be unable to play it if for some reason the game company server goes down.

Re: Sakurai: New Super Smash Bros. To Strike A Balance Between Hardcore And Casual

mikeyman64

I adapt fairly well. I like playing Brawl tournaments whenever they pop up. However whenever I do go back to playing Melee I always instantly like it better.

I don't really know if it's a "fixable" issue though. It would be hard to get the same exact "feel" for a game such as Smash due to the muscle memory required to play it. The reason people who are good at it are because of the way they have trained their hands and minds to play the game with its exact mechanics, so unless you bring back old coding and make sure the controller lag is exactly the same (or have an option to adjust it) there isn't going to be "another melee," if you will.

All that being said, I can't wait for the new game!

Re: Miyamoto: I Can Recommend Pikmin 3 To Anyone

mikeyman64

This one's gonna be good! Got to play the demo at the Wii U preview event, and as an avid Pikmin fan (10-day completion ;D) I can say I really like the controls.

Hoping that not having a time limit will not impact the replay value too much. Part of the reason I still play pikmin 1 is to beat it faster, and I think the time limit helps push me.

Re: A Hat In Time Developer Claims Donkey Kong 64 Was Instrumental In Killing Off Collection Platformers

mikeyman64

I couldn't agree more with his view on modern games. There's a place for linear worlds and streamlined games (ala certain Final Fantasys), but I have personally felt that games have been dumb'd down recently. Mario Galaxy is a good example for me. Very good game, yet I can't help but feel lacking after beating it. It was just too much of a blow through title. Granted, the game was designed with more of an older Mario Bros layout than it was with Mario 64, so that could be the main difference right there.

Now, that being said, DK64 was one of my favorite titles ever, let alone for the N64. I never noticed it having too many collectables, but that's probably just because I loved it. They might have been able to make the collectables non-crucial (as in, you only need 70% to move on) but you go too far with that and the game isn't really a collecting platformer any more.

I think that there's a sweet spot for those oddballs that don't like collecting things in their platformers. It's just a matter of making one that will draw the crowds back.
