Re: Popular YouTube Channel 'Did You Know Gaming' Receives Copyright Strike For Heroes Of Hyrule Video

@N8tiveT3ch you know they sued the company selling game genies during that time, right? Like them creating bad PR over nothing (and over things they may not be able to win in court) has been a long time thing.
I also had an NES as my major console for a while to be clear. I do like thier products in general. But they definitely fail to support/deserve thier communities love for them quite often.

@Rika_Yoshitake Nintendo is notorious for this kind of thing. They often flag what most other companies would see as free PR. Legally this video would like game streaming, quite possibly count as transformative or other protected uses of IP by a non-owner.
YouTube (like any company) will not however defend a posters content outside of them not being responsible for it. It makes sense (they can't review and fund every possible lawsuit; it would be a very poor decision Buisness wise), but it means they will roll over if a DMCA is sent to them.

What Fortnight complaints are you seeing? I don't frequent Twitter much, but haven't seen much on Epic sending DMCA notices.

Re: Talking Point: It's About Time Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night Came To Switch

@JaxonH The DS ones aren't multiplatform nor are the various mobile games, or that 3D fighter. Rondo of Blood (excluding the inferior SNES Dracula X game) is pretty much only available on the Turbo Graphics CD, PSP and some of Sony's store fronts (pretty much the same ones Symphony is on)).
But it would be nice to get Symphony on the Switch (package it with Rondo and call it the Blood Collection or some such).

@Serpenterror The Saturn version wasn't recieved all that well. It gave some bonus content, but had huge slow down issues because they basically tried to port the PS code directly over and the 2 systems excelled and sucked at very different things (it uses a surprising amount of polygons and 3d effects considering it looks like a mostly sprite based game; so the Saturn struggled as the initial coding was built around working around the Playstations 2D short comings).

@BulbasaurusRex eh, not sure there is a good way to do a 3d platformer without a dedicated jump button. But as for the back tracking it is more of an implementation issue (not much new so going back through levels gets fairly old, where as similar games would likely have had additional portions of the stage open up or change).
And other the costumes being repetitive (lots do either similar things or are just an upgraded version) and some being poorly tested in certain situations. I think implementation and design were both issues for the game.

Re: Yuji Naka Was Removed As Balan Wonderworld Director, Filed Lawsuit Against Square Enix

malcire

@BulbasaurusRex Classic sonic is a 2d platformer that uses one button (for jump, insta shield/fly/glide, and when pressed down spin), it works in a 2d platformer. Balan wonderland is a game where you replay the same levels to get new objectives with little change, and is a 3d platformer that doesn't always let you jump.
Also a large number of the costumes are redundant/simple improvements.
Some of that can be attributed to what he brings up. But a lot of it speaks to poor design in general, and atleast the single button and not always allowing jumpin, in a platformer; was most likely present for quite a bit of time.
And it's annoying because it has quite a bit that with some changes would make it a good game. The animation isn't really bad, the basic costume concept is ok (would be great with more changes), and if the levels where done more like a collect a thon, the backtracking would be fine.
But it's as it is, I feel like comparing it to a competent 3d platformer is like comparing Bubsy 3D to Mario 64. And at least the Bubsy people were working before 3D platformers were really a thing.

At least it was Square ruinong a project instead of Naka (he's ruined or outright killed a number during his time at Sega, mostly through using his clout to either strip members from other teams or insisting on not sharing technology).

Though I do have to say, from a design perspective the game wasn't all that great. Duplicate power ups, forced back tracking. Single action button. I'm sure level design could have been improved, as well as technical issues, and the story. But some of that stuff should have been axed before full on development.

Re: Random: Here's Why Nintendo Doesn’t Want You Using The Word "Nintendo" To Describe Video Games

malcire

@Silly_G the gaming crash was mostly a thing in the US. Plenty of other markets (ones not so dominated by Atari) did fine.
In the US Nintendo brought another console and managed to gain retailer and consumer confidence. But markets less tied to American game buisness actually kept trucking. The UK and much of Europe kept doing just fine since their gaming scene was largely based on computers. And of course Japan wasn't badly hit by it.

Re: Take A Look Inside The Tiny Apartment Of The Man Who Owes Nintendo $14 Million

@HamatoYoshi It depends. There are ways to launder money if you have enough to make it worth it. At the ammounts he was allegedly getting payed, it wouldn't make sense to. The dude on the run maybe would have. But it depends on how he saw his actions (hacking consoles has only recently gotten more prosecuted, it use to be a bit more up in the air (EA arguably was doing something similar with their Genesis carts (Sega and them settled on an arrangement instead of finishing the case) and Nintendo had a few different verdicts over the years on people bypassing their hardware in various ways, some wins and some losses)).
So that the US would push forward with prosecution is a newer thing, most previous cases were civil (generally seeking injunctions and damages).

Re: Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard, Now Owns Call Of Duty And Crash Bandicoot

@CANOEberry they have halted some mergers or required promises of low cost services being continued for a few telecom mergers. And I believed blocked one or two cable acquisitions. But I doubt they will do anything over this as it can more easily be argued that it doesn’t negatively harm the consumer in the same way (as the market has tons of companies and starting a new one isn't comparatively costly).
Ms would most likely point to Sony and it's catalog of second party developers and other third parties like Ubisoft.
From my limited understanding of anti-trust law that is.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Wants Cross-Platform User Bans

malcire

@Ralizah it seems like he's more talking about what I would call a block list. So if I don't want to play with *****_user44 and faceman55 on my Xbox, I would be able to share that list with say my switch so I wouldn’t have to play with them there without recreating the list.
At least from the quote above it doesn't seem to be about stopping those people from playing or having their accounts.

Re: Nintendo Obtains High Court Injunction Against Internet Service Providers To Block Switch Pirates

malcire

@sanderev the one sold copy isn't necessarily correct. It assumes the pirate would have otherwise purchased the game. It also assumes that they don't already own the game and simply want to use a cracked version or some other such reason where the copy they own wouldn't necessarily provide the same experience (useful for instance to run it easily without steam trying to patch it or it being flagged as modified). Additionally they may pirate and then buy which would mean the difference of the lost sale would just be the difference in the value of currency at the time with any discount taken into account (i.e. if the real value of money is comparably $1 less and it's bought at a $10 discount it would be more like a loss of $11 (to heavily oversimplify how currencies value works in relation to time and ignore a whole bunch of calculations).
Additionally a pirated game is different from a stolen object in that it isn’t removing inventory from sale (i.e. Walmart isn't out a copy to sell).
That's not to say that piracy is inherently OK. But it's an oversimplification to compare it to theft of a physical item or assume that 1pirated copy is the same as 1 lost sale.

Re: Rumour: Chrono Trigger Sequel Chrono Cross Might Be Getting A Remaster

malcire

So they are going to take a 1999 rpg, and what add better textures? Maybe redo the cut scenes if we are lucky. I mean it’s a great game, but I think it will look like trash on TV's and probably not all that great in handheld mode. Would wrather a remake with new models, even if graphics were the only improvement.
Would wrather a set if it's going to just be minor improvements. Include Cross and Radical Dreamers.

Re: Troubled Brawler Paprium Is Coming To "Modern Platforms" Via A Crowdfunding Campaign

malcire

@TechaNinja probably because they blew past deadlines and never communicated with people. While they make good games, I can see why people would bitch to paypal and paypal wouldn't want to process payments. And seeing as another article I saw said they did the same on a new paypal account they set up, I wouldn’t be surprised if that (making a new account after the last one had issues) violated PP's tos.

Re: Capcom Says It's Unable To Add Cross-Save And Cross-Play To Monster Hunter Rise

malcire

@nessisonett I doubt that's the issue. My best guess as a programmer (albeit one who doesn't focus on games as my job) assume that either they are lying, or set up the save files differently (such as increased storage space and cross development). None are great reasons if something is a 1 to 1 port. But if it is cross developed maybe the other team expanded the save file for some reason (such as larger play areas or some such) or baring that they think they are mostly 2 separate groups and forcing 2 purchases will net them more cash.
