Re: First Impressions: Overturn

lockelocke

Um, if you're going to say that liking robots is a tendency limited to certain groups of people, I would say it's safe to throw us videogame nerds in the mix. So, how about that? The japanese and videogame nerds. That seems fair.
And to ramble further, saying that Americans won't widely accept a game about robots is like saying that the Japanese wouldn't accept a game about a Kurt Russel based white government op working on the behalf of America (Metal Gear, anyone?)

Re: Review: LIT (WiiWare)

lockelocke

I've been broke as a joke recently, but this could be the game to get me to throw more money at Nintendo. Looks too good to pass up.
Any impressions from those who've taken the plunge and downloaded?

Re: Adventure Island WiiWare

lockelocke

I'm fine with it not being retro, but I don't know if a 3D free roaming style would fit the classic Adventure Island gameplay. Hopefully its something like LostWinds (3D styled side scroller) or Crash Bandicoot (following a track, but from a behind-the-player perspective)

Re: LostWinds

lockelocke

If a retail game is $60 and you get 20 hours out of it, then $10 for 3 hours is a near perfect ratio.

Re: Ten Games We'd Like To See On The Virtual Console In 2009

lockelocke

Great list! I'd love to see all those games on the VC.
My personal top 10 games I'd like to see:
10) Thunderforce 4 (MD)
9) A Boy And His Blob (NES)
8) Chrono Trigger (SNES)
7) Final Fantasy (NES)
6) Earthworm Jim 2 (SNES)
5) Star Fox 2 (SNES).....long shot
4) THE MOTHER-EFFIN COMMODORE 64 FOR NA!
3) NBA Hangtime (N64)
2) Life Force (NES)
1) Tetris Attack (SNES)

Re: iPhone Hit 1112 WiiWare bound?

lockelocke

hmm...
I'm seriously considering getting this for my iphone. I love these kind of Gabriel Knight-ish games, and I'm really stoked to see one outside of the Strongbad series considered for WiiWare.

I've looked at some reviews in the Apple App Store, and people are reporting the game's length to be around 2 and a half hours, which is a little short for $7.99 (IMO), but in light of the Strongbad games and Lost Winds, it wouldn't be unheard of.

Hopefully, 1112 hits WiiWare, mostly because there are a whole grip of excellent iPhone titles that I'd love to see for the Wii. Especially Fieldrunners, an awesome tower defense game that Time magazine included in their Top Ten Games of 2008 (right up there with Gears of War 2 and GTA4)

Re: Talking Point: Is the Virtual Console On The Slide?

lockelocke

@Viral
I hate that damned wall.

@Ness
It is indeed complete, and available to play on the internet, via ROM. I just played through it last week; its short, but I consider it a must play for huge fans of Star Fox 64. You'll see why once you dip into it.

PS - So, on all this Club Nintendo madness, are these games automatically registered, or is this a manual process?

Re: Talking Point: Is the Virtual Console On The Slide?

lockelocke

I think the Wii's next console will undoubtedly support VC and WiiWare downloads; Not including back compatibility for this stuff would be flat out retarded. I can see a bit of a challenge in this, since signing on to the shop channel doesn't require any sort of user account. But, straight up, ignoring old WiiWare and VC purchases is just a bad PR move, bad marketing. Over the last few years, Nintendo has spent record breaking amounts of money on research and development. That considered, I find it very hard to believe they'll make any bonehead moves when it comes to hardware. Software is another story...

Re: USA VC Update: Kirby's Dream Land 3

lockelocke

@Wario4mom
It seems like a difficult title to bring to the VC, considering the main advertised feature of the game was being able to bring your Pokemon from the GameBoy to the N64. With that being out of the picture, the game is slightly crippled, and releasing it on VC may be a kind of counter-intuitive move.

Re: Talking Point: Is the Virtual Console On The Slide?

lockelocke

IMO the VC is totally not on the slide. From a consumer perspective, it might be easy to see it like this, but I think, if anything, Nintendo is doing they're best to preserve the lifespan of the service. To a lot of us, me included, it comes off as holding back on releasing no-brainer must-have downloads, but what it really comes down to is that RIGHT NOW the VC is not Nintendo's primary focus. A crappy holiday season for VC may be the result of an attempt to bring our focus to WiiWare or to promote holiday season retail releases (example: the unanimously panned WiiMusic). Whenever Nintendo feels a responsibility to update the VC more fervently, they will; that's how I look at it. For the time being, their attention belongs elsewhere as they try to more fully develop exactly WHAT the Wii is; WiiWare is only a very recent edition, and (hopefully) the upcoming MotionPlus will serve to redefine gaming on the Wii. When retail and WiiWare have had their turns, focus will come back to VC, and it will be most likely marked by a big release (Earthbound, for example). VC is a super integral part of the Wii, and Nintendo hasn't forgot about it, they're merely neglecting it for now.

Re: USA VC Update: Kirby's Dream Land 3

lockelocke

@stuffgamer1
Eh, I just look at it like KDL3 is the worst game in the Kirby canon, and Mario's Time Machine is the worst in the Mario canon. In any case, KDL3 sucks, its like the Yoshi's Story of SNES; a droll, monotonous naptime experience that brings shame to its predecessors. And I have played both games, and this is me making that comparison. But to each his own, eh?

Re: USA WiiWare Update: Sandy Beach

@Starwolf UK
This isn't the 500 point game I wanted from Konami
In fact, this isn't the 500 point game I wanted in any way, shape, or fashion.
Here's to the day Gradius: Rebirth drops, cheers!

Re: USA VC Update: Kirby's Dream Land 3

lockelocke

This is like giving us Mario's Time Machine instead of a classic Mario game, totally weak.

PS - @manicfatty
I would argue that World Of Goo can definitely hold its own next to Braid, and while there are a few gems available on Live Arcade, WiiWare certainly has a higher quantity of solid titles for download. Believe me, I am not without my frustrations about the Wii, especially on the retail front, but my recent purchase of a 360 has only given me way more appreciation of the VC and WiiWare services. With double the retro library, and a promising roster of upcoming original downloads, its obvious that the Wii will remain my main download platform. Its worth mentioning, however, that many games (like MM9) will inevitably end up on both platforms, and that the 360 does have a handful of must-haves, both old (Symphony Of The Night, Ikaruga) and new (Braid, Geometry Wars 2, SF2 Turbo HD Remix).

Re: Art Style: Orbient

lockelocke

As a puzzler fan, I am totally hooked. This is the first puzzler I really love outside of the 'colored block' family, and I highly recommend it to any hardcore puzzle fan, or anyone looking for a sedative but challenging experiance.

Having downloaded this, I'd have to change my top 5 WiiWare DLs of 2008 to:
5. Lost Winds
4. Art Style: Orbient
3. Star Soldier R
2. World Of Goo
1. Mega Man 9

Re: Space Invaders Get Even

lockelocke

So, I was hoping for some feedback on whether the game is "worth it" after purchasing a few mission packs, but it doesn't seem like anyone has taken the plunge yet. Or you're just very quiet.

Anyway,
IMO Get Even is completely worth it once the mission packs have been purchased. With all the different mission objectives, ship types, levels, enemy types, and bosses that become available with DLC, the game really gets its chance to shine. However, WITHOUT the mission packs, Get Even is dull and flat, and probably leaves you wondering if spending even an extra $5 on it is worth it. That said, I agree with the notion that a better idea would have been to make the initial download free (like a demo), which would probably have created more of an incentive to jump in and spend money on the extra DLC.

That said, Get Even is one of the most original arcade style games I've played, coming off like the illegitimate child of a top view shooter and a Rampage or King Of The Monsters style 3D roaming 'destroy everything' kind of game. The only shame is that we have to shell out $20 bucks and 700 blocks just to see Get Even's full potential.

My advice: If you're doubting it, but curious, just spend $5 on the first pack. You might as well, because right now you're sitting on a completely crippled version of the game. The first pack will give you a new ship type, double the levels you have right now, and two new bosses. You'll be amazed at how much the game opens up.

Re: Space Invaders Get Even - Stage Pack Details

lockelocke

@Satans Therapist
I'm pretty sure the block size of all the Level Packs is included in the initial download; In other words, I don't think the DLC adds block size, just costs money.

EDIT: Nevermind, the mission packs are about 120 blocks a piece. They save as "data" instead of as a part of the Get Even "channel" so you can add and delete them separately.

Re: WiiWare World - Best of 2008

lockelocke

1. Mega Man 9
I can't wait for Gradius Rebirth, and I'm really hoping for more retro installments of classic franchises
2. World Of Goo
3. Star Soldier R
Definitely my most played WiiWare download
4. Lost Winds
5. Alien Crush Returns

Haven't messed around with the Art Styles, but I'm thinking about Orbient as my next download.

Re: USA VC Update: StarTropics II

lockelocke

for fun:
6. Zombie's Ate My Neighbors (SNES/MD)
Thanks for the reminder, Fox
7. Star Fox 2 (SNES)
yeah, yeah, a total impossibility; however, I just finished this game on emulator, and considering how awesome it is, I just have to throw a vote at it.
8. Metal Gear (NES)
9. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX2)
Another impossibility, as it was only released on MSX2, but I can dream. This is the REAL sequel to Metal Gear (directed by Hideo himself) and it falls right before MGS in the whole Metal Gear plotline.
10. Earthbound
Most of you have probably never heard of this one, it's a fun little RPG for the SNES ;-P

Re: USA VC Update: StarTropics II

lockelocke

1. Tetris Attack (SNES)
2. Life Force (NES)
or at this point, honostly, just give me any decent co-op shooter
3. NBA Hangtime (N64)
or NBA Jam, but Hangtime is juicier
4. Boy And His Blob (NES)
or just a white blob that shapeshifts according to jellybean flavor, that would be a fine substitute
5. Earthworm Jim 2 (MD/SNES)

Re: Bomberman Blast

lockelocke

Is this a totally different game than Bomberman Live for the 360?

@Kobayashi
You're about as good as I am, homie. That Easy SIM smoked you first round, and pretty much committed suicide those next two rounds. I feel your pain.

Re: USA VC Update: StarTropics II

lockelocke

@Adam
I think the next Nintendo console will also mostly likely support the VC, which is another reason for them to take it slow on releases. Still, one ABSOLUTE CLASSIC per month should be a requisite.

Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - January 2009

lockelocke

I'll agree that the amount of features in Melee and Brawl expand the game tons, but the original Smash is still my favorite. To me, the slightly slower pace of that game makes for a bit more of a strategical match, where every move/blow counts.

That said, Brawl kicks some serious A.

PS - just bought a 360 so I wouldn't have to ride the disappointment train every monday, not to mention wait around for months for a quality retail title. And I'm not complaining, I think the rate at which Nintendo releases VC games is almost reasonable, but I've just been missing out on too many classic titles.

That said, No More Heroes kicks much A.

Re: Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint

lockelocke

Funny, that dude that works for BPlus (WiiBoy) said back in September that he had a nightmare about Plattchen getting a 3/10 on WWW. I guess some dreams do come true.

Re: Alien Crush Returns

lockelocke

Wow, just watched the video and I can't believe I've been sleeping on this game. I love Devil's Crush, so this is a no brainer. And to think I was literally just about to buy an ArtStyle game...this is way more up my alley.

Re: Gradius Rebirth

lockelocke

Still waiting! Hopefully they'll hook Life Force up around the same time Rebirth is ready for release.
PS - Why no co-op? WiiWare/VC NEEDS more co-op shooters.

Re: Top Five Most Wanted Virtual Console Games

lockelocke

1. Tetris Attack (SNES)
easily my most played SNES cart, ridiculous multiplayer, and a US/UK release is long overdue, Japan have been sitting on this one forever!
2. Life Force (NES)
cause we are in desperate need of a (true) co-op shooter
3. NBA Hang Time (N64)
somehow made the impossible to improve-on formula of NBA Jam better
4. A Boy And His Blob (NES)
the most bizarre and punishing title available for the NES
5. Earthworm Jim 2 (MD/SNES)
the most creative platforming/shooter hybrid to come out of the 16-bit era, period.

Re: USA VC Update: Enduro Racer

lockelocke

I am Spartacus!
But, seriously, I too proudly swing my Wiimote in the name of Wii Sports, I'm even tempted to hook up WiiPlay and another controller, any feedback on WiiPlay?

Re: USA VC Update: Enduro Racer

lockelocke

Don't forget to take into account that Nintendo is already into development of their next console, and allegedly having committed to the idea of an HD Wii, it's probably safe to assume that the VC will remain intact and transfer over to Nintendo's next-gen. So, not only are they trying to stretch the appeal of the VC out over the life of the Wii, but they're inevitably going to have to hold back some must-have titles if the VC is going to keep releasing new titles into the next generation.
But, for real, this update is a serious slap in the face.

Re: Ecco The Dolphin

lockelocke

This is one of those games that my grandparents bought me and it just used to sit in my closet and gather dust. Gave it a couple shots, but I could never get into it enough to get very far. Too many jellyfish. Good music, tho, and great sound FX.

Re: Earthworm Jim 2

lockelocke

This game is pure genius. Instead of doing a basic update of the original, they created a game where nearly every level presents you with a unique challenge. Where one level is a standard run and gun platformer, another has you trying to dig you're way through a sandy cave against a time limit, and another has you playing as a salamander (!?), swimming through what appear to be the innards of an organism, while Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata plays in the background. Definitely one of the most creative and original titles of the 16 bit era. Can't wait!

Re: DoReMi Fantasy: Milon's DokiDoki Adventure

lockelocke

The more import gems like this that show up on VC, the better. As much as I love the nostalgic value of VC, it's really refreshing to run into quality titles I've never even heard of. This game is hella creative, every level introduces something novel, like being launched out the top of a bottle (like a cork), riding in a log down a waterfall, etc. Really colorful, and loaded with character.

Re: Bubble Bobble

lockelocke

Life Force aside, this was the greatest co-op NES title I owned as a kid. The only flaw is that there's ONLY ONE SONG THAT PLAYS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE GAME. Actually, the boss levels may have different music, can't remember...
PS - that boss is hella hard
