This is, without exaggeration, my single favorite video game. I've beat it well over twenty times, and in my first year of college there was a competition to see who could beat this game the fastest. At that video game tournament, myself and several others went up against a mysterious girl no one had seen before. This chick heard about the competition, but didn't attend the school, she decided to sign up anyways. Well, we all set off into Hyrule and within three hours this girl was already done, while I was still meandering somewhere around a fourth or fifth dark world temple. Needless to say, I was in love.
Umm...3 Stars, Right....
So I'm gonna disagree on the grounds that Metroid pretty much invented in depth exploring and map roaming in the 8 bit era. Well, to better articulate what it did, Metroid introduced a new potential to the platforming genre. We could explore in an expansive variety of settings, progressing with the help of upgrades we earned along the way. In short, the was hella advanced at the time, it blew my mind out. I mean, there may be other titles that I'm not remembering, but I was around back then, so feel free to refresh my memory...
Yeah, so, Super Metroid may be everything here plus more, but for pure historical significance and contributions to the evolution of video games, no less than 5 stzars.
This is hands down my favorite Genesis game. The mechanics are brilliant, especially the blocking feature which turns enemy fire into health. Also, "difference between weapons isn't clear"!? The difference in weapons is the beauty of this game; Organic enemies are highly vulnerable to fire, and certain weapons don't even work on robotic enemies. That's where the strategy comes into play: you go into a level with a mixed variety of weapons and feel out which ones are useful and which aren't, then if you die and have to go back through the level, you can choose the weapons you know will do some damage. A highly intelligent shooter, Word Up!
@Starwolf UK What's superior about PPL? Can you tell me, or anyone tell me, what's the difference between PPL and Tetris Attack? I mean, as far as I can tell, the only differences are the aesthetics. I don't mind the Pokemon license (sixth grade was all about Red & Blue version; they banned Pokemon from my school, and I used to hide behind the library with other kids and sell off my high level Pokemon, good times), so I'd be down to cop the game, but I'd like to know a little more about it...Different modes, unlockables, etc?? For a die hard Tetris Attack fan (I still have a working cartridge) is this game worth buying, does it bring anything new to the table, or should I stick to my cart?
Me want Tetris Attack. I mean, is this a "must-buy" for puzzler fans because it essentially IS Tetris Attack? Or can this game stand on its own? I'll buy it if Tetris Attack never hits the VC, its still cheaper than the $20 going price for Attack. But if I'm gonna see Tetris Attack on my Wii one day, I don't really see the point. Someone enlighten me, please. Also, if they're having trouble with the Tetris license, why doesn't Nintendo drop Panel De Pon as an import, nah'mean?
While its possible that Earthbound could be rated by the ESRB and still never make it to the VC, I highly doubt its a coincidence that EB was rated just shortly after it appeared in NP as the number one wanted VC title. I'd say we'll be seeing Earthbound, and we'll be seeing it soon. Hells to the yes, I'm bout to beat some ass with my cracked bat, y'know?
@ Jordan: Hell to the yes! These are all sick games, no doubt, and Earthbound is, without dispute, one of the best titles for the SNES. But, didn't ya'll have childhoods filled with "Boom Shaka Laka"s and "He's Heating Up"s. NBA Jam was in the top 5 I mailed to NP. I mean, to me, you can't have the early 90's without NBA Jam. One of the best multiplayer titles of its generation. Required release, Nintendo; Get on it!
On second thought, all the censorship I brought up before is tied in with NOA (Nintendo of America). Like Adament pointed out (Devil World being released in Europe), Europe had a totally different screening process or mabye, like Japan, had none at all, I don't know. Devil World's censorship in the US had to do with NOA's obscure rules about portraying religious figures and symbols. I don't know how NOA factors into the VC or if it even does, so on second thought, I'd have to say that BC's failure to appear on the Wii probably has nothing to do with the game's content.
Also worth noting that Nintendo put Bionic Commando through hella changes before it hit shelves in Europe and the US. The game was originally titled "Top Secret: The Resurrection of Hitler." Nintendo did a number on the game, changing the Nazis to the BADDs, Hitler to Master D, and turning all the Swastikas on the flags and podiums to Germanic WW2 style eagles. Honestly, I find it all pretty confusing; I mean, who would take offense to shooting the out of a bunch of Nazis. For real, that exploding Hitler head scene is all happiness and joy.
Yeah, the Master D/Hitler imagery makes more sense to me than the idea of not wanting to promote sequels appearing on other consoles. Nintendo's had a history of not lending support to games that include whatever Ninty deems to be "inappropriate" content; Examples are Devil World for the NES, or Luc Bernard's (developing Eternity's Child for WiiWare) holocaust themed DS game, Imagination Is The Only Escape, or even deciding not to push an AO rated version of Manhunt 2. They have very strict regulations for what can and what cannot appear in a Nintendo endorsed game, and have even resorted to censoring content. Years ago, Nintendo went so far as to clothe "naked" statues in the background of SNES's Castlevania 4, and removed the ability blow up a Hamster by sticking it in the microwave from the NES's Maniac Mansion.
Genesis or SNES, I'll happily take the Earthworm franchise. In fact, when I first read the headline and saw the picture of Jim, I had a hyperventilating nerd attack.
River City is dope, but I'm holding out for the glory of Crash N The Boys: Street Challenge, another classic from the kind folks down at Technos Japan. If you like RCR, then Crash N The Boys deserves a look; Its an Olympic style competition game with teams, taking sprites directly from RCR. Sounds less intriguing than it is, but once you start dispatching your pet piranhas on opponents , along with other equally daft and cruel methods of securing victory, you'll know true love. Grab it on emulator.
@Datcha Flashback! What a sick game, and I had totally forgotten about it. Used to play it across like 6 floppy disks on my old mac, and at a Blockbuster by my old pad. Definately a contender for me, though I already sent in my five games.
Also, how could I forget? NBA Jam most definately needs a VC release.
Ha, I've had 400 points kicking around for months, and finally their purpose is clear; Fantasy Zone, fo sho. I've still got my old Master System, but the controllers are shot, and its painfully frustrating to play, so I'm hella looking forward to SMS titles on the VC. Hit me with Space Harrier, Sega, and I'll forgive you for Space Harrier 2.
Hells yes! An unlicensed classic that Nintendo refused to touch because of its inclusion of religious imagery. This game goes for as much as $200 now; Hella stoked that its coming to VC. While it may have borrowed as much as, say Mario borrowed from Pitfall, or Sonic from Mario, its not the Pac Man copy it may appear to be. Devil World features a unique constantly shifting playing field, a weapon system reminiscent of Bomberman, and a Donkey Kong-esque villain who looms over the top of the screen. You may find yourself nostalgic over certain other classic titles as you play through Devil World, but to call it a mere Pac Man rip off is short changing the game for sure. Worth the 500 (600?) for the difference in price tag alone.
I still have the cartridge for this one; picked it up at a thrift store one day, when I saw the 'Square' label. Hoping to discover a lost RPG gem, what I got was oversimple, and hella boring. It's kind of like Space Harrier, if it sucked. Choosing different players kind of superficially changes what's happening in front of you (look of the level, character sprite, weapon sprite), but doesn't offer any ACTUAL change; Characters are essentially identical, with no distinct abilities or changes in the weapon behavior. Also, there are no weapon pick ups or, really anything to break up the monotony. Plus, every time I turn this bitch on, I start on a different level. What the hell is that? Not worth 500 points.
It's a good idea, because it generates revenue. Unless, that is, Nintendo starts shorting us on content, because they want to maximize the money coming in. For example, if they start releasing partial versions of VC games, and asking for an additional payment to buy the remainder of the game, then they will have turned slimy corporate hacks .
This game is hella boring. The name of the game is, collect X number of fruits and then the level ends......c'mon, I get no sense of accomplishment here! Fruits?! That's all you got?

When the computer stops counting your combos because you're kicking so much ass, you will agree, that Tetris Attack is the best puzzle game ever.
