Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

kCaracal

@andykara2003 interesting argument, yeah if you view it as zero-GPU power motion blur it might be practical.
Still imo 30fps shouldn't be this dominant in 2025 in the first place, I have personally made the decision to avoid most 30 fps titles at this point and wait for new Nintendo hardware to elevate it to 40/60 or consider getting PC releases for third party games

Re: Sega Knows You Hate Mario Kart's Blue Shells

kCaracal

I never had problems with the blue shell, however I mostly play Mario Kart titles in Solo time trials or local couch multiplayer sessions. When people are within IRL punching radius dragging strong items into the front middle becomes way less of an issue (not that I condone violence but we all know heated couch gaming moments).
That said Sega shouldn't try to "fix" Mario Kart imo, just come up with cool original stuff and let audiences decide, there is space for more than just one casual kart racing game

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Banning Switch 2's Using MIG Cartridges

kCaracal

@sanderev @ancientlii EULAs cannot nullify all your essential consumer laws, many restrictions are not legitimate before court. In my country if you buy a physical piece of media for ownership then you are allowed to take measures to preserve it, as well as play your legitimately created backup copy on the devices you see fit (including PCs with legal emulators)

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Banning Switch 2's Using MIG Cartridges

kCaracal

@rvcolem1 There is nothing about piracy even remotely similar to theft, because nothing that Nintendo/ the third party publisher has just "disappears" from their hands. It's unauthorized copies, unauthorized by the companies and corporate law. I my countries there is legal use and preservation of backup copies in certain boundaries. While I understand that game publishers need to make money I will never use such inaccurate propaganda language as "stealing information" or justify repressive measures that take away legitimate options from legitimate users.

Re: Digital Foundry Digs Deep Into Mario Kart World's Tech And Specs

kCaracal

From my laymans's perspective it doesn't look substantially better then MK8D. That said, it does feature a huge map, more players and 120 fps. I think they went for the right priorities, Switch first party games looked fine, now the extra horsepower should be focused on new gameplay and double framerates.

Re: Rumour: New Switch 2 Rumour Makes Wild Claim About Mysterious 'C' Button

kCaracal

It sounds wild but I genuinely think it could be true, think about it:

  • the tech is already there, there is local wifi multiplayer, even between docked and handheld. Instead of every device running it's own instance of the game the switch 2 could delegate some computing or even stream the content to switch 1, the former wouldn't even be radically different from the technical options they offer now
  • it keeps used switch 1's from flooding the market, so people who want a nintendo device won't have the option of ultra-cheap used consoles, at least in number, and consider new devices from retailers instead

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition?

kCaracal

Easy game of the year for me, 10/10.

It does have problems however, I do think the performance, while very decent in early game, gets worse later on, when you have 4 party members, skells and graphically overkill arts to render. I assumed it could hold 30 fps all the time as the game is technically a bit older, but I was wrong. Especially fast-moving mech traversal shows the performance bottlenecks, next to complex battles. I do have the subjective impression that handheld is a bit more fluid. Perhaps Switch 2 will fix that, while I think 60 fps is not that important as the game is still an RPG at core, stable 30, 40 fps or variable refresh would be perfect for this game.

Why I still rate it 10/10? Because in all other aspects it's a flawless experience. It's like a Sci Fi Shonen where YOU are the protagonist growing more and more renowned and ridiculously powerful every season. Few games achieve this while also granting the freedom and abundance of options like this one.

Re: Creators Of New Switch Emulator 'Suyu' Hope To Avoid Nintendo's Wrath

kCaracal

@dew12333 You can play pirated games with both your Nintendo Switch (2017 Edition) and a PC running Yuzu (or forks).
Do you want to ban the Switch console too?
I think it's severely puzzling how some people demand for Big Tech to ban their completely legal means of game preservation and enjoyment of their own, bought software. As an IT person I can assure you how important emulation technology and things like compatibility layers or virtual machines are to technology and, really, civilization as a whole. Legal precidents to criminalize these completely justified usecases are disastrous and should be avoided at all costs

Re: Microsoft CEO Says He Would "Love To Get Rid Of" Exclusives On Consoles

kCaracal

Rare case of Nadalla saying something true and wise. Exclusives are absolutely obsolete in a console space where we have all modern games built around mainstream PC / Mobile processor architectures. Portability is less of a problem then ever before but sadly Nintendo militantly insists on gatekeeping its games on underpowered hardware.
Of course things like ARMS or Switch Sports are difficult to pull off without appropriate input methods on Playstation and Xbox but Zelda or Xenoblade would fit perfectly on Series X/S, PS5, PC/Steam Deck.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Official Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Switch OLED

kCaracal

@SwitchForce I will not buy a whole console bundle from scalpers just for controllers that are only usable for like 2 years until the drift comes lol.
I mean it's great that Nintendo is not doing paid lootboxes or excessive MTX in general but this forced artificial scarcity (that they also pull off with amiibo) really shows that they are no strangers to toxic anti-consumer business decisions.

Re: Indie Dev Headcannon Confirms It Helped Sega Update Sonic Origins Plus

kCaracal

Wasn't the whole point of this collection that all the content is re-crafted in a modern engine and not just emulated ROMs??
They literally throw mediocre ROMs of a legacy console, that couldn't deliver on Sonic's premise for technical reasons, at you to create the illusion of """"content"""" while actually the "Plus" in the name is barely justified and not really worth the extra price.
