Re: Review: Vagante - A Roguelike Too Empty To Make An Impact

"oftentimes you’ll come across cauldrons or a blacksmith with no indication on how to use them"

The reviewer seems to be missing the tooltips that are provided when you die. There is a common one that says "Sacrifice extra equipment to The Smith for a chance at new gear."

While some other things may require more trial and error, the sacrificial altars should all be able to be figured out.

Re: Review: Vagante - A Roguelike Too Empty To Make An Impact

The reviewer probably didn't think there was more content because they were not capable of getting further. Nintendo Life should have another capable reviewer take a second look at this game. This review is being discussed in different places and it is single-handedly scaring people away from buying this.

Also, who plays a roguelite for the story? The reviewer links NL's list of great roguelites. Do they personally even like any of those games? Most of them don't even have stories apart from a few cutscenes and some other minor dialog.

Completed boggled by this review.

@amrikudou You’re right that the reviewer likely doesn’t like this type of game. However, Vagante is a roguelite, not a roguelike. It just shares more rogue elements than the roguelites he mentioned. This game feels like a slower Spelunky with combat similar to the in-development Catacomb Kids, both roguelites of a more similar nature.

This game has the same amount of main biomes as Spelunky HD yet that wasn’t an issue for the reviewer when they reviewed that game..

The fact that some Steam users have around 500 hours in this game and several other reviewers state that the game has a lot of content (given the size of the development team) makes me seriously think this reviewer did not put much effort into their review efforts of this game. Games like this are about depth, secrets, and replayability.

Did you play the game?

“For example, when playing the 'Ritual Passion' stage, the ember-covered animated figures look just as impressive on Switch as they do on other platforms. It's running at 30fps, just like the PS4 original, but doesn't hit the 60fps seen on Series X; however, this isn't as much of a dealer-breaker as you might think.”

The devs, and other uploaders, have uploaded 60 fps gameplay of the Journey mode running on Switch. I counted the frames myself, it is running at 60 fps.

@Ryi-jun Thanks for replying. I consume multiple written and video reviews of a game I don't often ask questions because they tend to take a significant amount time to receive a response and I often end up getting no response at all. For a port, things such as performance, controls, and content should be givens.

Re: Diablo II: Resurrected Is Coming To The Nintendo Switch This Year

For those who haven’t watched the Deep Dive video, it is very interesting.

@Trajan I doubt they will butcher it, as it is just the original game running under a visual layer with some QoL tweaks. They are also adding some more ambient sounds and remastering the audio and cinematics.

@LUIGITORNADO Sounds like you made it part way through the second of five acts. This game caters to those who enjoy a good grind and repeating game areas over and over. You were maybe 30% through the lowest (of three) difficulty.

Re: Ubisoft Expects Watch_Dogs To Be One Of The Biggest Selling Titles Of 2014

baconcow

I think that Destiny is going to walk all over the sales of this game. Bungie/Activision/Blizzard. Halo was a big name and I think Destiny is going to be the next big selling franchise. Smash on the 3DS will no doubt sell more than any other game (besides CoD and GTA). But Watch Dogs won't be the seller that Assassin's Creed is, not for its first iteration.

Re: Latest PS4 Sales Figures Take it Past Wii U Life-to-Date Q3 Total

I plan on getting a PS4 once there is a must-buy game on it, which there isn't currently, IMO. Since I have a quite powerful PC, games that cross-platform with the PC do not make sense for me on the PS4. I don't understand how the Wii U, with arguably a much better software base (at the current time), is so poorly selling. With Pikmin 3, DKTF, SM3DW, and NSMB Wii U, there is already a solid set of Nintendo games on the Wii U. Not a lot, but more than the exclusives the PS4 has to offer. Still waiting for the PS4 to show that must-buy game (that isn't available on PC). Thinking this might end up being Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain or some obscure RPG. Also looking forward to Minecraft on the PS4, for couch co-op purposes. It is one of those games that could really use the PS4 hardware to really shine. My PC can handle it, but couch co-op just isn't viable without a mods, and even then, it fails.

Re: Satoru Iwata Admits The "Wii U Isn't In Good Shape" Ahead of Investor Briefing

Nintendo is losing a lot of money in the last year. Why? They have a huge catalog of games (even just first party ones) that they could easily put on the 3DS and Wii U (GBA games, especially the Pokemon, Advance Wars, and other popular series). The 3DS is screaming to have digital DS downloads and GBA downloads. Heck, they could sell SNES games on that console, too. They release games slowly, holding back much of their best handheld games from the past. I keep waiting for GBA on the 3DS. I keep waiting for old Dragon Warrior/Quest games on the 3DS. They have so much potential and they sit there twiddling their thumbs. Also, they could make a 3DS with a second analog built in and people would buy it (make regular and XL later). They have franchises that have sit improperly used or unused for so long: Metroid Prime, F-Zero (easily one of the best racing games on earth), Advance Wars (seriously... where is this). They could sell popular 3DS franchise games on the Wii U if they want to push more console sales: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon 2, Animal Crossing Wii U (this is a no-brainer... and with the Wii U, it could be incredibly expansive), and much much more. They sit there without DK1, 2, or 3 on their Wii U virtual console. They have Twilight Princess, one of the best Zelda games, made to be played on the Gamecube hardware, screaming for an HD upgrade (Wind Waker HD was impressive). Metroid Prime Trilogy is screaming HD. So many money-making ideas that involve reusing popular IP's or making ports (HD or direct on 3DS) of popular games. Ports and reusing IP's work on other consoles, why not push it on the Wii U. And where is Minecraft? If Nintendo's decision to leave it off, it was a poor one.

This could be the releases in the next few years, and sell millions:

3DS

  • Advance Wars 3DS
  • Metroid Collection (3DS remake or collection of Zero Mission, Fusion, and Super Metroid)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • GBA, DS (digital), and SNES games on 3DS.

Wii U

  • Pokemon Stadium X&Y
  • Minecraft
  • F-Zero GX^2
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy HD
  • Metroid Prime 4
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon 2
  • Fire Emblem Wii U
  • GBA and DS games on Wii U.
  • Release more titles at once instead of spreading them out so far. Since most weeks are crap, I barely watch the titles that drop.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS)

@blinkpunk02

The review is not entirely correct. You can purchase or rent from nearly the beginning of the game. Purchasing weapons is necessary if you ever want to upgrade them. Purchasing happens almost at the same point you rent. Not sure why they said the majority of the game you cannot purchase. I had all the weapons purchased (except one) by the end of my 2nd dungeon (not including the dungeons from before weapons could be rented).

Re: Say Hello To The Nintendo 2DS - A 3DS without 3D

baconcow

@DanteSolablood I agree with you. I am just annoyed Nintendo has not upgraded for the (I think) masses. I enjoyed all of the DS upgrades that happened. The DS Lite brought a bright screen and a compact size. The DSi, while not as much of an upgrade, brought a better internet interface, webstore, built-in browser that worked ok at the time, and SD card slot. I was all excited when I heard there was a new 3DS, only to get disappointed.

Re: Say Hello To The Nintendo 2DS - A 3DS without 3D

baconcow

@DanteSolablood, I appreciate Nintendo's effort to put the console into more children's hands. What I would have rather was a better console in MY hands. And the 3DS XL is hardly an "upgrade". It is just a larger system with a larger stretched screen. To each his own, to consider this an upgrade.

Re: Say Hello To The Nintendo 2DS - A 3DS without 3D

baconcow

@tchaten, I still use my original 3DS from the beginning and it is an excellent piece of hardware. The 3DS XL also sells frequently, at least here in Canada, for $170. I would never throw away the 3D aspect of this great console and it's ability to close.

Re: Say Hello To The Nintendo 2DS - A 3DS without 3D

baconcow

So, instead of redesigning the 3DS and having it include a 2nd analog stick, a design that would surely interest myself in upgrading and push some others that are on the fence, they put their R&D money into a model that saves, what, $40? I see 3DS in-store for $140 WITH a $40 game, quite frequently. I'd rather pay $10 more from a superior piece of hardware.
