What happened was on Friday, the U.S. Department of Labor released the monthly job data and the economic growth data for the previous quarter, both of which were disturbingly low.
The U.S. economy created 151,000 jobs for January, being one of the lowest numbers in this recovery yet. The U.S. growth for the final quarter of 2015 was 0.7%, which isn't due to weather this time.
The world is very worried that the U.S. will tip into a full fledged recession sometime this year.
Add that to numbers recently out showing South Korean economy is on the verge of a recession, along with Japan in a another recession. India is on the verge of a recession as well, followed by China's economy overheating and crashing you get jittery investors.
Canada, Mexico, South Africa, and Brazil are in steep recessions. UK economy is stuttering, with it expected to tip into recession this year. The Eurozone is also expected to be in recession this year as France, Germany, and Austria are seeing their economies slow drastically.
All this data came out in the last two weeks.
The U.S. Stock Markets closed down yesterday significantly, as did European Markets. which caused Asian Markets to follow suit.
The U.S. Markets are negative now too and could see another day of big sell offs.
@Dave24 God of War 3 was uprezzed to 1080p and 60FPS, with no change in textures and models. It only added photo mode.
TPHD at least adds:
Better controls Stable framerate Better textures and models for 1080p Better load times Better UI Improved Soundtrack Chests now stay open after you've opened them Other changes to the game based on feedback from the original release Hero Mode was added and is available from the beginning Amiibo extras Off TV play The Tear collection was cutdown and improved.
Also new items were added, especially the Po lantern which helps you locate and collect Pos.
The physical package in NA comes with Wolf Amiibo and game at $60 Though only Gamestop chose to take part in the Soundtrack Preorder bonus.
@Fazermint Actually Tantalus is making TP HD with oversight from EAD. Zelda Team is making sure that Zelda U is taking criticisms of the series and previous games to heart.
@LordGeovanni He probably violated his license agreement and/or failed to renew it. Though it is possible that YouTube copyright system did it as a mistake.
A strong launch will definitely ensure bad 3rd party support.
3rd parties have long complained that they cannot complete against Nintendo's software and that Nintendo's software kills their sales.
From Dan Adelman (former head of indie relations at Nintendo).
“It really comes down to the business case for these publishers. Nintendo consumers buy Nintendo systems primarily for the first party content. There’s a bit of a self-fulfilling prophesy in that publishers feel that they can’t compete with Nintendo first party, so they choose not to invest in making high quality products for the platform. There are some notable exceptions to this over the years like Rayman Legends but many times third party publishers set low sales projections for their games, and then decide a development budget based on that. I can’t say outright that they’re wrong either.”
Also there is no way in hell that anyone will be willing to pay $50 a year for Nintendo's online service, even if it was better than XBL.
Nintendo will never be able to live down charging for services, which in turn will hamper sales.
@Yorumi I remember properly because I had to fight to get an SNES. I was literally given the engineering version of how the Genesis was superior hardware. I come from a family of engineers. I also remember my gaming mags and all the ads ran by Sega. None of us kids were stupid enough to admit to owning an SNES lest you be made fun of herein the U.S. Midwest.
Nintendo and the industry are just as creative as they were on 8-bit and 16-bit era.
It's hard to turnout new innovations and creativity when it was driven by new CPUs and GPUs that added loads of new features. It also saw new gimmicks which became industry standards on the controller.
If you count the lack of truly new IPs as a lack of creativity, then you have a point.
But that's not developers fault that the consumers refuse to buy new IPs and stick with established brands and IPs.
New gameplay is done within existing franchises and IPs because it's guaranteed to sell enough to recoup the investments.
The consumers are the very reason why the selection in gaming has radically decreased over the pasted decade. The majority of Consumers want more of the same and will give you hell if you change anything. This is in most industries now.
Nintendo and others have a set number of employees to work on products. As gaming becomes more complex they require more resources. This leaves less resources for new untested ideas. Nintendo only has ~5,300 employees.
It's hard to produce new IPs and creativity when the bulk of your resources are used to make the staples that the majority constantly demand. They bring in the money that funds everything else.
If there was as much money to be made with new IPs and creativity, then the industry would embrace it. Sadly it's more expensive and risky to launch new IPs and creative games than to release an iteration of a successful product.
NPD and the gaming companies interview consumers, focus test, send surveys etc... To get feedback from consumers. They also use forum posts and article comments too:
To put it quite simply it's better to produce a new version of Call of Duty than risk driving away the consumers on something new and untested.
I'm sorry if I came across as rude, I wasn't meaning too. But to be fair you complain on a regular basis on news articles.
You literally cannot get and posted scans of old gaming magazines with their articles due to them not existing and due to copyright.
You cannot get old Sega ads unless they were posted to YouTube.
I lived during the 16 bit era reading gaming magazines and buying games.
I posted the actual released dates for every NSMB in NA from Wikipedia.
NSMB WII literally released 3.5 years after the DS game to date. NSMB 2 literally released 3.7 years after the Wii game NSMBU literally released 3 months later on Wii U All of this is in NA.
Super Mario Bros 1 released in different cities in NA, in the second half of 1985. There is no concrete released date.
Super Mario Bros 2 USA released in NA on July 10th 1987, ~2 years after SMB.
Super Mario Bros. 3 released February 12, 1990 according to Nintendo. This is 2 years 7 months and 2 days after SMB2 released in NA.
Super Mario world released on August 23, 1991 the day SNES launched in NA. This 1 year, 6 months and 11 days after Super Mario Bros. 3 launched in NA.
As for Wii U iterations of IP according to Metacritc: Smash Bros Wii U 92 - tied with Melee, 1 point lower than Brawl despite all the complaints, massively better than the horribly reviewed 64 game. http://www.metacritic.com/game/wii-u/super-smash-bros-for-wii-u
Mario Kart 8 has a review 88 on Metacritic which is higher than every console Mario Kart in Metacritic history.
Mario Kart 7 also beats every console Mario Kart in Metacritic score except for the Wii U game. Only Super Circuit and DS score higher. The Wii U and 3DS versions have the higher user review scores too.
We have all the reviews praising Nintendo for returning form and glory with most of their installments on Wii U and 3DS. It's literally in the reviews even from this site. Go read the reviews.
We have NeoGaf, which is officially the Nexus of Hardcore Gaming is used as a source for every site in terms of gaming news including this one. We have plenty of articles from the gaming media, including this infamous article from IGN in 2014 complaining that Splatoon isn't another platformer from an established IP. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/08/18/gamescom-2014-splatoon-why-i-wish-it-was-a-different-game
We even mainstream media, Pachter and others complaining about Nintendo which this site posts all the time, especially Pachter.
All you've posted is personal opinion complaining about everything, trying to pass it off as fact. You have no proof that everyone hates these 3DS and Wii U for being uncreative while loving DS and Wii for being creative and original
I never said the PS4 was horrible, nor did say anything bad about the competition other than their marketing is borderline deceitful and that their systems only sell AAA blockbuster, M-rated games, and realistic sports and racers and nothing else, which is backed by NPD and other sales charts.
By the way I have posted numerous links, but you probably ignored them.
Now the most famous editorial from the Wii and DS era from Matt C. before he left IGN.
@rjejr
Sony didn't say much of anything let alone go to any events for the past 6 months except for PSX in December
Nintendo schedule starting with August:
August: Penny Arcade, where they had a one of the biggest booths and demoed more games for everyone else. I do believe Sony and Microsoft skipped.
September: PAX, they had one of the biggest booths and more games than everyone else (hit the news over TPCi shutting down someone throwing an adult Pokemon party)Sony went but had a small booth, Microsoft skipped.
October: Fighting Game convention in (I think it was) where they showed off more Pokken characters and demoed the game. It was them, Capcom, TPCi and Namco. Microsoft and Sony didn't show.
November: they had a media day, where all the media was given demos and stuff on all the content in the Direct before they aired the Direct. Microsoft and Sony did nothing.
December they went somewhere. Sony had PSX, Microsoft did nothing.
January: CES though no one cared that they were there. Microsoft did do a CES event, but no Xbox stuff
February: They are doing something
March: GDC though oddly Microsoft will be the only platform holder not there.
April: Something
May: nothing major due to E3 coming in early June.
June: E3 presentation, NWC, Treehouse Live, and lastly they will have one of the biggest booths at the show. This year EA will join the list of publishers not attending (they will have an event separate for the media).
If you are visiting site like IGN, Gamespot, Eurogamer, 1up, etc... you won't get much Nintendo news and ads purposely.
Nintendo news and stuff on these sites do not bring in the revenue and clicks. It also irks 3rd parties when Nintendo stuff is on their sites.
Their readership do not want positive Nintendo articles and always scream horribly when they report positive Nintendo stories and reviews (just read the horrible comments that make up nearly all of the comments).
Also Microsoft, Sony and most major 3rd parties wine and dine the gaming media to the point of literally sending them on trips and sending them to 4 and 5 star restaurants and hotels.
If you break any of Microsoft, Sony and most major party rules, they blacklist you and your site. This means they will not allow you talk, advertise, and review their products. If you do they will sue you if you do. You also are not welcome at their events and booths and industry events.
The only thing Microsoft has been advertising for Xbox One is Halo 5.
The NFL uses Microsoft's software and hardware, is forced to advertise Xbox One at all the games, or lose all their Microsoft software and hardware.
Microsoft is also advertising Xbox One as part of the Windows 10 campaign, openly stating Xbox One can run Windows 10.
I rarely see an Xbox One ad outside of these 3 campaigns.
All the multiplatform titles normally state PS4 and have the Xbox One logo at the end with the other logos.
Sony has been advertising everything from 4K content on PS4, to FFVIIR, to unreleased games etc... on TV, Radio, Internet, Social Media, and in stores.
As for the Nintendo portal, Nintendo briefly had it a few years ago but due to complaints of it being too much news and information, causing 3rd parties and specific games being lost in the mess.
So everything is now segmented to ensure everything gets it's share of attention.
You should get a RSS New feeder such as Newsfire (I use it) to ensure you get all the published articles from the sites you like.
@Yorumi You obviously misremember when GCN and SNES first few years. The biggest complaint about the SNES first two years was too many rehashes and iterative sequels. It was all the talk in 1991 and 1992 about how Nintendo was relying on nostalgia and rehashes to sell the SNES. Gaming magazines were constantly running articles on how Sega was doing new and creative stuff with gaming, while Nintendo was using new graphics to hide the lack of creativity in their games. It was also widely reported on how Nintendo refused to use an industry standard controller for SNES and added a bunch of then gimmicks. I lived the 16-bit WARS and had magazine subscriptions.
Sega marketed heavily on now Nintendo was being unoriginal with it's games on SNES and resorting to gimmicks to beat them.
There was a good amount of criticism of Nintendo 64 for being gimmicky and stale when it came to Nintendo's output.
The first year of Gamecube cemented the stigma of Nintendo "playing it safe" and rehashing everything from N64. Then Sunshine, Star Fox Adventures, Windwaker, Animal Crossing, Pikmin etc.... were using gimmicks to sell games. It was the media narrative and listed in all the reviews.
Gamecube was either a massive rehash or a massive gimmick depending on the month.
DS and Wii have the stigma of having a bunch of "ruined" Nintendo and gimmicky games.
Mario Kart Wii was widely hated for horrible gameplay, Brawl was hated for being gimmicky, Skyward Sword was hated for being a horrible game etc...
Wii U and 3DS is constantly be reported as ignoring the wishes of gamers and fans, while focusing on being too "different". All of Nintendo's mainline releases on Wii U and 3DS are regularly called out for ignoring the wishes of fans and deviating too far the staple gameplay even on this site. It's literally all the press has been reporting since 2011.
Right now the media is reporting on how Nintendo betrayed everyone with the Smash Ballot and ignored what everyone wanted.
Nintendo said they made sure to fix all the criticisms gamers and the media and with their DS and Wii games when they made 3DS and Wii U iterations.
This is why the 3DS and Wii U iterations are viewed as return to form and glory.
As for NSMB:
NSMB DS released on May 15th 2006 in NA NSMB Wii released on November 15th 2009 in NA (3.5 years after the DS game) NSMB 2 3DS released on August 19th 2012 (3.7 years after the Wii game). NSMBU obviously released a few months later, but it was made by a different team at the same time.
All are good solid games.
The release schedule of NSMB series is longer than the release of the first 4 mainline Mario games, which were normally 2 year part in NA and EU.
Nintendo claims they kept NSMB series iterative, because they kept getting a big backlash everytime they did something new and radical with sales taking a hit.
NSMB 2 was purposely conservative, because it was new team who was afraid of being hated for making it too different.
The 3DS and Wii U versions are generally the highest reviewed versions/iterations ever, blowing all their predecessors away by far. Especially the Gamecube, GBA, DS, and Wii versions
Capcom is required to get Okami rerated in every territory to release on the Wii U eShop due to ESA requirements (Same goes for PS4 and Xbox One digital releases). Capcom then has to add in the Wii U wrappers to the code to make it work on Wii U. Then they have to test the newly coded Wii U version to make sure it works right. Then they have to release it.
Capcom is looking at minimum $30,000 just to get it rated in all the major markets Add in the coding and debugging to get it to work on properly on Wii U you are looking at ~$50,000 in costs.
If Capcom decides to market it, then you are looking at $100k minimum.
Why should Capcom bother, when they know you can get the compatible Wii version used for $15 or less?
If they release it for $20 on the eShop, they get $14 on each unit sold. This means they have to sell 2,143 copies to cover the cost of rating the game for the eShop.
To cover all the costs to get it on the eShop, they have to sell 3,572!
If they market it, they have to sell 7,143 to cover the costs
It's not cheap to have games rated/rerated and ported/modified for digital release.
FYI: PSN, XBL, eShop, Steam, Apple, Google, etc... all take a 30% cut on digital releases.
P.S. I'd rather have Viewtiful Joe 1&2 than Okami.
Nintendo has been dealing with a huge backlash on GCN, GBA, Wii, DS, 3DS and Wii U for playing it too safe with sequels and iterations. The media constantly hounds Nintendo for not taking risk in software design and gameplay and releasing nothing but rehashes with a graphical update.
Gamers are constantly whining about Nintendo reusing the same damn template for their games without improving and innovating the gameplay in any meaningful form.
The saying about Nintendo games goes as follows "YOU'VE PLAYED THEM ONCE, YOU'VE PLAYED THEM ALL!!" and "Each new game does nothing new!"
Though when Nintendo does genuinely innovates or creates a new IP, the media and gamers hound them for "ruining their games" and "abandoning what made them great". Every time a new IP is announced the media and gamers always respond with "Why are you abandoning Mario, Zelda and others?", "where is [insert established IP]?" "Quit diverting resources from _______ franchise!"
As for F-Zero Minamoto never said anything of that sort. He said he was shocked that people wanted a new F-Zero due to the last 4 games bombing hard globally and he doesn't know what to do with it without rehashing the previous games.
F-Zero just doesn't sell enough to warrant production. F-Zero (SNES) sold over 2M+ globally. F-Zero X struggled to sell 1 million on N64 globally. F-Zero GX struggled to sell 500k (That is thousand) globally!! F-Zero AX did horrible in Western arcades. All THREE F-Zero GBA games struggled to sell 250k together on GBA globally. F-Zero Anime was canceled in both NA and EU after 4 episodes.
The market has soundly rejected a full F-Zero game 5 times now and the series has acquired the stigma of being rehashed.
@GearB Innovation had nothing to do with it as Sony is using PS move as the basis for PSVR and other VR companies are adopting similar controls. Innovation didn't kill Wii U, it was Nintendo's lack of focus with a $250+ price tag that killed the system.
Every Nintendo system has not traditional features at the expense of graphics. Every Nintendo system has a non traditional controller.
The smaller 3rd parties and Eastern 3rd parties are now facing the horrible effect of Microsoft and Sony focusing heavily on AAA Blockbusters, M rated games and realistic graphics. No one will to buy games on those systems unless they are AAA Blockbusters, M rated games and realistic graphics. Everything else is bombing causing 3rd party output to narrow to focus on AAA Blockbusters, M rated games and realistic graphics.
Sony and Microsoft are also now realizing how finicky the "hardcore"/real gamers are when it comes to accepting new features. Sony and Microsoft cannot get them to sue new features without massive rejection and backlashes that effects games that use these new features. They just want the same control scheme and features they've been using since PS1.
Gaming is rapidly stagnating overall as the major 3rd parties are too risk adverse and the "hardcore"/real gamer won't buy anything that doesn't adhere to the AAA Blockbusters, M rated games and realistic graphics templates that have been in place for decade now.
@rjejr Nintendo isn't as secretive as they used to be, they just aren't as open as Activision.
Bethesda, Ubisoft, EA, Epic, Square, Konami, Capcom, Microsoft and others only release information when they are ready or at key industry events.
Microsoft mainly releases information on games at events, mainly Industry events (mostly being E3). They rarely release information outside of events. They still are refusing to release anything regarding how well Xbox Hardware and accessories are performing.
The only regular information we get from them are trailers and Xbox OS updates.
Sony doesn't really give information unless it is indie or update related. Sony won't be releasing any real information on any 1st party or big 3rd party games until GDC in March.
Sony regularly answers questions related to gaming "problems" on twitter and the status of PSN.
The last major update from Sony was PS4 hardware sales update in January.
The leaks and rumors are stating Sony is saving everything for E3 to shut Nintendo and Microsoft out.
Since the last direct in November, Nintendo has given information on:
-Fire Emblem Fates Western version details, trailers via YouTube, sectional playtrhoughs from the press -Smash DLC update and trailers -Splatoon DLC and patches -Twilight Princess HD updates, play throughs of certain portions of the game, new trailers
A few tidbits on Star Fox Zero on Twitter Bravely Default 2 updates, trailers via YouTube, playthroughs from the media They also just got done giving us information for M&L Paper Jam and few other 3rd party games in January.
They also just gave us an update about the My Nintendo Rewards program, their incoming account system and Miimoto only last week.
Nintendo is staring to give information for upcoming 3rd party games, to ensure they aren't ignored.
There is also talk of Nintendo having some reveals at GDC in March.
So Nintendo has been focusing on the February, March and April titles while saving anything big for E3 and GDC.
Nintendo received a huge amount of backlash because they didn't save their big announcements for E3. They also received a huge backlash for side stepping the gaming media and going the "casual"(social media) route with information
So Nintendo has been quite noisy over the past 3 months.
If anything Nintendo has been more open with Wii U than Microsoft has been with Xbox One.
@rjejr Everyone has complained since NES that Nintendo takes too long to make games and doesn't share information. People have also complained since SNES that all Nintendo does is rehash the same games and IPs instead of releasing anything new. Also Nintendo constantly is accused of doing the something with nothing new and innovative in their games.
The costs required to make full VR console is extremely high that would require a huge price to breakeven or massive losses to get it down to mass market prices.
With VR using motion controls as the main input, I think it's safe to assume that most gamers will avoid it like the plague (They still really hate motion controls even on PS4).
VR will form it's own market with some overlap with PC, handheld and console gaming.
For various reasons I don't see VR becoming as big as the handheld market in terms of gaming.
Though the prediction is mobile gaming will render PC, Handheld and Console gaming obsolete by the end of the decade.
Roku/Amazon Fire TV/Apple TV/etc... are also supposed to kill PC and console gaming for good.
Also Wearable tech (including smartwatches) are supposed to be the next big thing that is supposed to be as big as mobile if the predictions pan out in the next few years.
Tablets and Smartphones are also supposed to be killing Windows and PCs dead within the next few years.
It's also predicted that microchips will be injected in everyone within 15 years carrying all your personal data.
The "future" of gaming is predicted to be:
1) 4K
2) SUHD (instead of 4K)
3)AR
4)Haptic feedback
5)F2P
6)AAA blockbusters only
7)Controlled by wearables
8) Free form controllers
9)Cloud computing
10) Others.
@TheLastLugia As long as Platinum makes money they will be around. There is nothing wrong with being a small company dedicated to a specialized market. It just means you won't see huge sales.
@TheLastLugia Would Assassin's Creed be as big as it is with Ubisoft's reputation and huge marketing budgets? I don't think so.
EA, Ubisoft, WBi, Bethesda, Activision, Microsoft and Sony spend close to $100 million to market each "major" title in the West.
They also heavily run their game designs through focus testing, market research, and committees to ensure the game is fits what the "hardcore" market wants. This takes the creativity and originality out of games.
They also have the market on lockdown via exclusive deals and deals with the Microsoft and Sony. They literally have sued any company that enters their turf, bankrupting quite a few.
Platinum isn't that big and doesn't have the resources to make it big. I see Platinum forming a deal with Nintendo to become a full second party studio to stay a float. I'd rather Platinum do what they want than go under trying to compete with the established Big 6 3rd parties.
I agree. People complained when it was revealed that Fates had the petting game and other features that supposedly turned the game into a "waifu sim". People complained when the female characters were revealed to be too busty and had scenes showing zoomed in breasts. People complained when it was revealed the traditional weapons limited usage numbers were removed.
Now people are complaining that the very "WAIFU" stuff they complained about is being toned down and/or removed.
People have no right to complain about the lack of Wii controls in TP HD, after they riled against it in 2006 as the most vile thing to happen to gaming ever!.
Now only if Platinum's games sold well at full price...
(Bayonetta 1 on PS3 and 360 move the vast majority of the 1 million sales at sub $20, making it their best selling game of all time. They didn't make much money on it.)
I see My Nintendo rewards being highly ignored by gamers, if not hated for "diverting" resources from the products they want.
Gamers actively hated Club Nintendo in very territory including Japan.
I really don't see My Nintendo swaying any gamers outside of a few big fans. It may sway some in the general public to buy Nintendo stuff, but not gamers.
I mean you don't see Sony offering a rewards program for gaming and they are cleaning Microsoft's clock who offers a program that once in a blue moon offers a reward to users (normally nothing of value). Nintendo offered the best reward program by far out of all the gaming companies and yet it did nothing for sales.
Ubisoft, EA, Activision, Bethesda and WB don't offer any rewards and they sell more games than everyone else each year. Hell I don't think any 3rd parties have a reward program anymore.
Obviously gamers don't like rewards programs, because those companies that offered them would be getting the biggest share of business.
Even retailers it has no impact.
Gamestop has the best rewards program and yet they don't get the lions share of gaming purchases (Mine are quite good). Best Buy has My Best Buy Rewards, which is used on gaming too. Yet gamers actively avoid Best Buy.
Toys R Us has a good rewards program, yet gamers don't shop there.
Meijer's (Great Lakes Store) has a great rewards program that also applies to games, yet it doesn't help boost their gaming related sales.
So far rewards programs seeming drive gamers way instead of getting them.
The 3DS/New 3DS ARE NOT MASS MARKET PRICE FRIENDLY.
The Original GB didn't take off until it reached sub $100.
The GBC took off at it's launch price of $70 and was quick below $50
The GBA launched at $100 and was at $80 when GBA SP launched 8 months later.
The GBA quickly hit the $50 mark with bundled games.
DS launched at $150 and was quickly down to $120 when DS Lite launched.
DS Lite and DSi quickly reached sub $100.
3DS uses 3D screen technology and GPU built for the 3D effect.
Neither are price friendly causing the 3DS to remain pricy.
The mass market price is sub $100 for handhelds in the West as it always has been.
Though if you want the handheld to reach mass market pricing, you have to sacrifice specs.
(Before some yells smartphone prices, smartphones cost $650+ without subsidizes. Now in the U.S. you have to pay full price or spread it out over a set period).
Nintendo needs to focus on price over specs for the next handheld if they want to sell 80M+.
They need to get the price down fast like they did with GBA and GB and launch at $150 or less, and be down to $100 or less by the end of the first year.
On that note, I love my New 3DS XL.
I just wish multicore ARMs and the new screen technology was cheap when 3DS originally launched.
@dumedum I just used Nintendo's official numbers which are updated on the official IR site. PS3 had the lowest attach rate of last gen. Xbox 360 has the highest attach rate of all time with over 10 games per system.
PS4 has an attach rate of 4.x Both Wii U and Xbox One are over 6.
The Wii has shifted close to 1 BILLION games, 2/3rds of which are 3rd party games of all sorts. A good part of that is shovelware, but not the majority of 3rd party sales (same with the make up of sales on PS2, PS1, SNES, Genesis, and NES).
@invictus4000 Did you miss the fact that Sony and Microsoft heavily marketed their current systems as HD multimedia devices and Sony has been marketing the 4K movie aspect of PS4.
I mean Sony pushed Blu-ray and multimedia features on PS3 more than they did games in their marketing campaign. PS3 only had Blu-ray, to ensure Blu-ray would win the format war. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH GAMES according to then Sony CEO.
Sony heavily pushed DVD feature of PS2 the first 3 years of PS2 over gaming. Sony heavily pushed CD features of PS1 over gaming the first 2 years (until FFVII hit).
Yeah 3 out of the 4 latest winning consoles haven't been dedicated systems.
@Charinzardon That's a horrible misrepresentation of smartphones and their apps. Smartphone gaming only accounts between 1/3rd and 1/2 of the total iOS and Android App stores.
Smartphone gaming is no worse for the industry than AAA Blockbuster games and shooters. All three are causing the industry to narrow.
Wii U - 6.29 games 3DS - 4.57 games Both higher than PS4's attach rate.
Wii - 8.984 games (higher than PS3) DS - 6.154
As for last gen consoles still selling, Wii and Xbox 360 are still selling everywhere including NA, while PS3 has been dead as of last year and not worth reporting from Sony.
@arronishere That's not a lot of content and it's better than how the rest of the industry treats everyone including Valve. That content is not required to beat the game.
Nintendo is lagging behind the rest of the industry in terms of DLC and having necessary DLC. This is why "hardcore'/real gamers can't take them seriously
@electrolite77 This thread will soon catch up to the sheer hate and other emotions raging on IGN, Forbes, Gamespot, NeoGaf, NWR, Eurogamer, etc... Even Reddit is riled up today.
Captain Toad only has the one mode where you locate 8-bit Toad, though that was made long after the game was released.
Hyrule Warriors only had the Spinner locked behind Link Amiibo, which was given to everyone with a later update.
Mario Party 10 only has ONE Amiibo mode! There is the daily scratch offs you get to earn extra points to spend on unlockables.
Shovel Knight is a 3rd party game made by YCG, who has the exclusive co-op only on Wii U via their Amiibo. The Shovel Knight Amiibo sales is paying for the development of that mode and new content.
The Amiibo characters in Code Name S.T.E.A.M. do not add anything special to the game and aren't needed to completely unlock the extra content. IS said they wouldn't have added them without the funds from Amiibo sales.
Fire Emblem Fates is the same case as as the Code Name S.T.E.A.M.
TPHD does not have an extra dungeon, just a challenged mode to unlock the biggest wallet, which really doesn't add much to the game.
Splatoon content isn't anything special, just gear that no one really uses because there is better gear in the game. The 3 mini games are fun, but the Amiibos help pay for the later DLC we all received for free.
Yoshi Woolly World Amiibo function isn't anything special either.
No one had been screwed over by Amiibos other than those who live in areas where retailers don't wan to stock them.
They just give nice extra bonus for those who already own the given Amiibos.
It's only slightly different than getting exclusive preorder content, missions, chapters from 3rd parties on major releases. The only thing Amiibos do is allow you trade and borrow them with other people to get the content. Hell you can even resell them others.
You don't see very many people complaining about Bethesda locking away content in Limited Editions of Fall Out 4, or Ubisoft locking away characters, endings, and missions. No one gets mad at EA, WB, Sony and Microsoft for doing the same as Ubisoft and Bethesda.

Re: Nintendo's Share Value is Hit Hard by Stock Market Panic
What happened was on Friday, the U.S. Department of Labor released the monthly job data and the economic growth data for the previous quarter, both of which were disturbingly low.

Re: Editorial: Considering the Recipe For Successful Nintendo Remasters and Re-Releases
@sinalefa
Actually it is only 2 remasters and 2 full remakes (OOT3D and MM3D).
Re: Editorial: Considering the Recipe For Successful Nintendo Remasters and Re-Releases
@Xaessya
To be fair Tantalus says they've been working on TPHD for over 3 years. at the time of the November Direct.
Re: Editorial: Considering the Recipe For Successful Nintendo Remasters and Re-Releases
@Dave24
God of War 3 was uprezzed to 1080p and 60FPS, with no change in textures and models.
It only added photo mode.
TPHD at least adds:
Better controls
Stable framerate
Better textures and models for 1080p
Better load times
Better UI
Improved Soundtrack
Chests now stay open after you've opened them
Other changes to the game based on feedback from the original release
Hero Mode was added and is available from the beginning
Amiibo extras
Off TV play
The Tear collection was cutdown and improved.
Also new items were added, especially the Po lantern which helps you locate and collect Pos.
The physical package in NA comes with Wolf Amiibo and game at $60
Though only Gamestop chose to take part in the Soundtrack Preorder bonus.
The digital version is only $50
Re: 'Pokémon Reorchestrated' Has Its 'Kanto Symphony' Album Removed From YouTube By The Pokémon Company
@Dave24
YouTube is bleeding less money now than it was when Google Bought it in 2007.
YouTube is now just bleeding hundreds of millions of U.S. Dollars just operating.
It's down from the billions in a few years ago.
Google has literally lost almost $10 Billion U.S. running YouTube.
Re: Editorial: Considering the Recipe For Successful Nintendo Remasters and Re-Releases
@Fazermint
Actually Tantalus is making TP HD with oversight from EAD.
Zelda Team is making sure that Zelda U is taking criticisms of the series and previous games to heart.
Re: Editorial: Considering the Recipe For Successful Nintendo Remasters and Re-Releases
@hadrian
WWHD cut the Triforce Hunt down by a few pieces.
It also has a faster sail you can get and the regular sail moves faster.
The whole game is better than the original.
Every Zelda game has padding in it, including the original game.
Though to be fair most games have padding in them to artificially lengthen them.
Re: 'Pokémon Reorchestrated' Has Its 'Kanto Symphony' Album Removed From YouTube By The Pokémon Company
@LordGeovanni
We don't know the terms of the license and his on going dealings with TPCi.
He probably didn't read this license properly and/or didn't renew it.
He probably violated it and then tried to renegotiate the license.
This stuff normally kept private.
Re: Editorial: Considering the Recipe For Successful Nintendo Remasters and Re-Releases
It's no big secret that consumers practically buy only big name games and established IPs since the PS2 era in the West.
Remasters have done very well for Sony on PS4 and PS3, most selling millions.
Their remasters even provided a bump in hardware sales too.
There is also nothing wrong with remasters if done correctly.
An original entry is always preferred over a remaster/remake.
Re: Final Fantasy Explorers UK Sales Take a Dive as LEGO Marvel's Avengers Still Leads the Way
@wazlon
Actually 3DS games have for the most part sold poorly in the UK.
Re: 'Pokémon Reorchestrated' Has Its 'Kanto Symphony' Album Removed From YouTube By The Pokémon Company
@LordGeovanni
He probably violated his license agreement and/or failed to renew it.
Though it is possible that YouTube copyright system did it as a mistake.
Re: Soapbox: A Nintendo Fan's Hopes and Dreams for the NX
A strong launch will definitely ensure bad 3rd party support.
3rd parties have long complained that they cannot complete against Nintendo's software and that Nintendo's software kills their sales.
From Dan Adelman (former head of indie relations at Nintendo).
Also there is no way in hell that anyone will be willing to pay $50 a year for Nintendo's online service, even if it was better than XBL.
Nintendo will never be able to live down charging for services, which in turn will hamper sales.
Re: PlatinumGames Explains Shift to Contract Work and Ambition to be One of the World's Top Studios
@Nin-Stream
True, but they need make some money to pay the bills.
Re: Soapbox: If Nintendo Took On Virtual Reality, Would It Be A Disaster Or Gaming's Holy Grail?
@Yorumi
I remember properly because I had to fight to get an SNES.
Re: Soapbox: If Nintendo Took On Virtual Reality, Would It Be A Disaster Or Gaming's Holy Grail?
@Yorumi
I never said that.
The released dates I posted are right.
NSMB 2 literally released 3.7 years after the Wii game
NSMBU literally released 3 months later on Wii U
All of this is in NA.
As for Wii U iterations of IP according to Metacritc:
Smash Bros Wii U 92 - tied with Melee, 1 point lower than Brawl despite all the complaints, massively better than the horribly reviewed 64 game.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/wii-u/super-smash-bros-for-wii-u
NINTENDO IS LAZY AND YOU DON'T CARE from Matt. C. at IGN.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2009/12/11/column-nintendo-is-lazy-and-you-dont-care
He goes on about graphics and the Wii and DS iterations being nothing but lazy rehashes.
Now if you want to post links about how everyone hates 3DS and Wii U software offerings go ahead (I can post article hating on Splatoon).
Re: Rumour: New Splatoon Mini-Game Arriving Soon with Fresh amiibo Figures in Tow
@rjejr
Re: Soapbox: If Nintendo Took On Virtual Reality, Would It Be A Disaster Or Gaming's Holy Grail?
@Yorumi
You obviously misremember when GCN and SNES first few years.
NSMB DS released on May 15th 2006 in NA
NSMB Wii released on November 15th 2009 in NA (3.5 years after the DS game)
NSMB 2 3DS released on August 19th 2012 (3.7 years after the Wii game).
Re: Rumour: New Splatoon Mini-Game Arriving Soon with Fresh amiibo Figures in Tow
@Ralizah
I can easily find the 3 pack available here in Metro Detroit with a few places having it on sale for significant amount (up to $10 off).
Though if you just want the squid, then importing is your best bet.
Re: PlatinumGames Explains Shift to Contract Work and Ambition to be One of the World's Top Studios
@leo13
It's not free money.
Capcom is looking at minimum $30,000 just to get it rated in all the major markets
Add in the coding and debugging to get it to work on properly on Wii U you are looking at ~$50,000 in costs.
Re: Soapbox: If Nintendo Took On Virtual Reality, Would It Be A Disaster Or Gaming's Holy Grail?
@Yorumi
That's not entirely true.
Re: Soapbox: If Nintendo Took On Virtual Reality, Would It Be A Disaster Or Gaming's Holy Grail?
@GearB
Innovation had nothing to do with it as Sony is using PS move as the basis for PSVR and other VR companies are adopting similar controls.
Re: Rumour: New Splatoon Mini-Game Arriving Soon with Fresh amiibo Figures in Tow
@rjejr
Nintendo isn't as secretive as they used to be, they just aren't as open as Activision.
-Fire Emblem Fates Western version details, trailers via YouTube, sectional playtrhoughs from the press
-Smash DLC update and trailers
-Splatoon DLC and patches
-Twilight Princess HD updates, play throughs of certain portions of the game, new trailers
Bravely Default 2 updates, trailers via YouTube, playthroughs from the media
They also just got done giving us information for M&L Paper Jam and few other 3rd party games in January.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Tackles the Native Resolution and Framerate in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
People are still in an uproar about this game?
Geesh...
Re: Soapbox: If Nintendo Took On Virtual Reality, Would It Be A Disaster Or Gaming's Holy Grail?
@Mahe
3DS isn't a flop, it just isn't priced for the mass market.
Re: PlatinumGames Explains Shift to Contract Work and Ambition to be One of the World's Top Studios
@leo13
They have to convince Capcom to do it and I don't think Capcom is interested in it.
Re: Here's Exactly What Has Changed With Fire Emblem Fates' "Skinship" Petting Mode
@ultraraichu
You may like it.
But it doesn't stop the fact that there has been a major uproar at every turn with this game and TP HD.
Re: Rumour: New Splatoon Mini-Game Arriving Soon with Fresh amiibo Figures in Tow
@rjejr
Everyone has complained since NES that Nintendo takes too long to make games and doesn't share information.
People have also complained since SNES that all Nintendo does is rehash the same games and IPs instead of releasing anything new.
Also Nintendo constantly is accused of doing the something with nothing new and innovative in their games.
I guess Nintendo cannot win.
Re: Soapbox: If Nintendo Took On Virtual Reality, Would It Be A Disaster Or Gaming's Holy Grail?
10) Others.
Re: PlatinumGames Explains Shift to Contract Work and Ambition to be One of the World's Top Studios
@TheLastLugia
As long as Platinum makes money they will be around.
There is nothing wrong with being a small company dedicated to a specialized market.
It just means you won't see huge sales.
Re: PlatinumGames Explains Shift to Contract Work and Ambition to be One of the World's Top Studios
@hYdeks
Because TMNT game is owned and published by Activision (or is it someone else).
Platinum has no say on how the game is released.
Re: Mario Kart Flashmob Surprises And Potentially Terrifies UK Shoppers
I see this doing more damage to Nintendo than helping, especially once the media starts reporting it.
Re: PlatinumGames Explains Shift to Contract Work and Ambition to be One of the World's Top Studios
@TheLastLugia
Would Assassin's Creed be as big as it is with Ubisoft's reputation and huge marketing budgets?
Re: Here's Exactly What Has Changed With Fire Emblem Fates' "Skinship" Petting Mode
@Grumblevolcano
The point is a good number of people are up in arms over the lack of Wii control options in TP HD, across the gaming sites and forums.
There is nothing wrong with including motion controls in TP HD as an option, for those who want it.
But Nintendo purposely didn't include it due to all the hate it received back in 2006.
The point is gamers are overreacting to everything recently, to detriment of the games.
(Actually I'd like Skyward Sword's, Sword controls to be an option in Zelda games. )
Re: Pokémon's Ash And Gary Are Getting The Nendoroid Treatment
Can I buy the Mew as a standalone figure in shiny form, please?
(I really don't think they are worth ~$75)
Re: Here's Exactly What Has Changed With Fire Emblem Fates' "Skinship" Petting Mode
@mowerdude
We can't have anything nice anymore
Re: PlatinumGames Explains Shift to Contract Work and Ambition to be One of the World's Top Studios
Now only if Platinum's games sold well at full price...
(Bayonetta 1 on PS3 and 360 move the vast majority of the 1 million sales at sub $20, making it their best selling game of all time. They didn't make much money on it.)
Re: Talking Point: My Nintendo Can Be a Tipping Point in Nintendo's Approach To User Accounts
@hcfwesker
It's on the diagram.
They probably will support physical purchases on NX.
They have also promised physical rewards too.
Re: Talking Point: My Nintendo Can Be a Tipping Point in Nintendo's Approach To User Accounts

No paid games rarely do well.
The Sims is free (or less than $2) on Smartphones with tons of IAP for extra features.
~90% of the money in smartphone gaming is free to play
Re: Talking Point: The New Nintendo 3DS is Yet to Have a Real Chance to Revive the Portable Family
Re: Nintendo Is "Looking At" Virtual Reality, But Don't Expect Details Any Time Soon
@H_Hunter
VR is too expensive for it's own good and hasn't been proven in hardware and software sales yet.
Re: Nintendo Is "Looking At" Virtual Reality, But Don't Expect Details Any Time Soon
@Pod
Ironically (or not) that motion controls are the main input for nearly every VR platform but one.

You need to take a hard look at mobile trends and how paid games bomb spectacularly
Re: Nintendo Profits Dip as amiibo Hits Over 40 Million Sales in Nine Months
@dumedum
I just used Nintendo's official numbers which are updated on the official IR site.
PS3 had the lowest attach rate of last gen.
Xbox 360 has the highest attach rate of all time with over 10 games per system.
PS4 has an attach rate of 4.x
Both Wii U and Xbox One are over 6.
The Wii has shifted close to 1 BILLION games, 2/3rds of which are 3rd party games of all sorts.
A good part of that is shovelware, but not the majority of 3rd party sales (same with the make up of sales on PS2, PS1, SNES, Genesis, and NES).
Re: Nintendo's Second Mobile App to Feature an IP "Very Well Known to Everyone"
@invictus4000
Did you miss the fact that Sony and Microsoft heavily marketed their current systems as HD multimedia devices and Sony has been marketing the 4K movie aspect of PS4.
Re: Nintendo's Second Mobile App to Feature an IP "Very Well Known to Everyone"
@Charinzardon
That's a horrible misrepresentation of smartphones and their apps.
Smartphone gaming only accounts between 1/3rd and 1/2 of the total iOS and Android App stores.
Smartphone gaming is no worse for the industry than AAA Blockbuster games and shooters.
All three are causing the industry to narrow.
Re: Nintendo Profits Dip as amiibo Hits Over 40 Million Sales in Nine Months
Attach rates are now updated:
Wii U - 6.29 games
3DS - 4.57 games
Both higher than PS4's attach rate.
Wii - 8.984 games (higher than PS3)
DS - 6.154
As for last gen consoles still selling, Wii and Xbox 360 are still selling everywhere including NA, while PS3 has been dead as of last year and not worth reporting from Sony.
Re: Nintendo Profits Dip as amiibo Hits Over 40 Million Sales in Nine Months
@arronishere
That's not a lot of content and it's better than how the rest of the industry treats everyone including Valve.
That content is not required to beat the game.
Nintendo is lagging behind the rest of the industry in terms of DLC and having necessary DLC.
This is why "hardcore'/real gamers can't take them seriously

This thread will soon catch up to the sheer hate and other emotions raging on IGN, Forbes, Gamespot, NeoGaf, NWR, Eurogamer, etc...
Even Reddit is riled up today.
Re: Nintendo Profits Dip as amiibo Hits Over 40 Million Sales in Nine Months
@arronishere
That's not true.
