I never played a Mech-game before and don't know what they should be like. I love the art-style, but think the environments look a bit empty. Also I wish they would stop it with the Death Metal already and I hope that won't play too much of a role in the game's soundtrack. Liked the music in the last scene though.
It looks a little bit too similar to Stardew Valley, but the dialogues seem to be fun and as a real-life graveyard manager I pretty much have to get this if it reviews well.
Oh man, I panicked a little after reading "grave concerns" aswell.... Never finished "Stick it to the Man" because being chased by those bad guys stressed me out at some point. But always loved its premise and style and weirdness and music! So I probably will get this, but probably physical due to Okami and soon Monster Hunter right now.
@DABYX Interesting argument. I would imagine people that managed to acquire "multiple consoles" (and apparently current ones still getting major titles) generally have enough money to pay for games.
@gurtifus Thanks for mentioning Frost! I put it on my wishlist, but hardly anyone seems to recognise this game. The minimalist graphics and the survivalist aspect caught my attention. Will probably buy it sooner or later.
Hand of Fate seems to be well-crafted and an interesting mix, but I am totally not into this medieval-fantasy-thing (also kept me from being too interested in Skyrim and Dark Souls and other stuff with that setting). So I will most likely skip.
Frost looks interesting. Will wait for reviews though. Same goes for Sausage Sports Club, which I love the craziness of. For those that like the genres Mugsters and Tanzia look like neat games aswell.
I will probably go for the discounted Sine Mora. Seems like a good deal after all.
People here and the graphics really make me want to be interested in Octopath, but I am too concerned that the stories and characters end up being as klischée and cheesy as they were in Bravely Default.
I am playing Figment at the moment, which positively surprises me. It looks a lot like the graphic novels by Shaun Tan and the sound/music really is something special. Where else do you get villains that sing while fighting you in a video game? It's sad that this one is overshadowed by other releases. Though the puzzles are not mindblowing, they are clever and varied enough and the game has a lot of charm.
Bought my Switch a couple of weeks after launch. It does not have any cracks at all. I don't treat it too carfully. It dropped maybe 3-5 times so far already in the house. And it is played mostly handheld, but sometimes also docked.
Maybe the cases were built in multiple different factories or there was an issue with the material in a certain time span.
@NintendoFan4Lyf And you think that someone at work won't be in for a "oh crap"-moment if they were "only" caught checking the internet for video game stuff at work?
I want it. Didn't even finish Bayonetta 1 or 2, but I still loved them a lot. Maybe I will get them on Switch again and try to finish them. Didn't play that much singleplayer games on Wii U. And I LOVED the enemy designs especially.
@Equinox It is great if you can cope with the frustration a rogue-like like this brings. You die a lot and everyone is going insane all the time. Then you have a couple of party-members that really work well as a team and leveled them up quite a bit. Then you take on a boss and everyone dies and you have to build up a new team from scratch. You do make progress by getting stuff and money though. It definitely is hard, but also very well-done and it gets you really addicted, especially because it is challenging. I love the art-style and the narrator and the music especially aswell, since they really add a lot to the atmosphere. My boyfriend just bougth it on Steam after he loved it on my Switch, but hardly gets to play on my console (because I do ;-]).
After having completed Banner Saga 2 yesterday, I returned to playing Battle Chasers Nightwar. Its not the most interesting game, but it definitely is well-made in every way and fun enough to play.
You should all buy Battle Chef Brigade and Owlboy. ;-] Though Battle Chef Brigade might not be for everyone, it is rather charming and something special. I am rather fine, but probably will at least get Figment while it is discounted. MIght also fall for Hollow Knight, because everyone is going crazy for it. Though it seems to be a little long. Also I am not entirely convinced that I won't buy Mario Tennis Aces. I liked the demo, but my boyfriend said he won't be playing with me. Same goes for Pode, though he might be more into that.
@GammaPhonic I too think that Direct and Treehouse really combine well. You get the info that something exists and a small trailer from the Direct and everything more in depth like gameplay or background info is told in the Treehouse-parts.
For me this year was just a letdown in style, not in content. Focussing on one game this much always bares the risk that those who are not that interested in that one game, will be disappointed.
I loved the style of the presentation of 2015 and 2016 reaaally much. 2017 was alright, though. I love when they are playful and witty in those videos. And I think videos are the best way to do so without having cringey moments. Watching some of the other presentations this year and also regarding the Switch-presentation in January 2017, the format of a presentation is really waaay to stiff for the fun stuff they are presenting.
Why would they release to free-to-play mobile ports on a platform if they weren't to get people interested in their respective franchises?
There will be at least an anouncement regarding Fallout. Otherwise this marketing strategy would make absolutely stupid.
I don't get why people complain already about the lack of announcements when the direct is tomorrow and usually that has always been the main platform for announcements. I take the games we get to know about from other sources as a nice bonus.
@Freek Thanks for the help! I actually did everything right, but the Squirrowl always pushed me away. I read online a hint that said "look what's below the Squirrowl", but still didn't understand what to do or how to. Somehow I finally managed to get past the Squirrowl more by accident. Finished the game yesterday and still love it. There are still many things to do and collect though. Was very surprised to accidentally find my nemesis this morning in a cave up in the mountains. It's interesting by the way how the missions in the game are not that strictly separated in main mission vs. sidequests. All of the big ones seem to be of pretty equal importance (oh well, except saving the village might be concidered sliiiightly more important than the other ones...).
Great choices to include!
Though I didn't really get how all the great reviews of Iron Cast came to happen. I had reaaally high hopes for that game and it just was too repetitive for me. The story didn't really draw me in and the difficulty spikes made trying to win way to frustrating.
It was an alright game, but not that much more or maybe I'm missing something.
A game that I love though I suck at it and hardly made any progress is Crypt of the Necrodancer! The music really keeps you motivated. And it always is soooo close. Also I love the different characters you can play as since their gameplay is really varied.
Currently I am playing Yoku's Island Express and loooove it so much. Everything is great about that game (except maybe the music, though it is not that bad aswell).
Currently I am stuck at Tunguska and the climbing gear and the Squirrowl. Just don't have any idea how to progress. Also I need to deliver a parcel to the Bee Queen, but I apparently need a special colour for my ball that I did not find yet. Maybe someone here can help?
@JasmineDragon Well, I would argue that Lego loves to license brands that usually are rather violent/dark and turn them into cutesy versions of the original. Examples would be Batman (as you mentioned), Lord of the Rings, Jurassic World, the other superhero-games, ... They like to draw in adults with those licenses to broaden the peer group. The brands gladly accept because it also surely works well the other way round: drawing the younger audience in with innocent Lego appeal and getting them interested in Marvel/DC/whatever movies. They surely have a rather diverse fanbase and try to cater to all of them with their games. It also is well proven by their Dimensions-lineup that they love to cater to their adult audience aswell. And only because the figures are Lego does not distract from the fact that you fight in most (?) games and destroy a whole lot of furniture for money.
About the whole Artwark-Debate: I don't really get why he is upset, but there have been some very inapropriate responses towards him. I think both sides should relax a little bit, especially because I think there is a lot of misunderstanding due to the language barrier involved here. He might have some odd convictions, but I am sure he means well and (hopefully) is not half as supressive towards other peoples' taste as he sometimes comes across.
I am interested, since it is a Gen 1 remake and a new approach to some degree. Don't have a smartphone, so cannot play Pokemon Go. Hope this isn't too integral to the game. Don't really dig the design of the game. Looks very basic. But the scene where you can ride on your Onyx totally confinced me! Why would you choose Pikachu though? Evee gives you the choice of three elements. Maybe it takes some time to get the stones and a normal type is usually not that useful, but so is Pikachu until Azuria city.
I rarely do preorder things and I never preordered an e-shop-game (at all, but especiall not from a publisher I knew nothing about and not coming from an already tested series). But I did preorder this somehow since the mix sounded really interesting and fun to me and it looked like it was really well-crafted. Glad I apparently wasn't wrong!
Bought it and swallowed it whole.
It reminded me a lot of those pen-and-paper-adventures I played as a child in the way it tells its story and the way it is influenced by your decisions.
I must admit that gameplaywise I didn't know well enough how the strategy works in this game until almost the end. It kind of tells you everything important in the beginning and I did not remember everything well enough (but well, you can always just look it up again and it is not THAT complex, though complex enough to be difficult to master).
You don't really have to know anyway. Most of the battles (except for those that really progress the story) won't be repeated. If you mess up, you suffer consequences, but most can be compensated by good decisionmaking.
I don't think the game is brilliant by any means. The gameplay was alright, the story was alright, the characters were alright. I liked the music a lot, though, and I liked the aestethics far more than I thought I would. Especially the little animations and the cameramovement during dialogue. It showed the attention to detail the developers payed.
As mentioned above I still could not stop playing the game until I was done and even now I am tempted to try again with better skill to try and reach a different ending. And though it was not that memorable to me, all in all it was a really entertaining and well crafted game that I would recommend to fans of pen&paper and or strategy games likewise.
@NewAdvent In my opinion it is not that much a metroidvania than rather more of a shooter. You don't have to do any backtracking, which makes it not as tiresome. The gameplay changes up a lot, too, so it does not stick to much to any genre at all. You can explore if you like to, but you do not have to explore very hard to progress. There are obviously riddles to be solved, but none of them are really hard. I found the game very refreshing and it had a great level of difficulty for me that never frustrated me (except for the literal jump'n'run parts of the final area, that thankfully didn't go on for too long), but kept my heart pounding a lot of the time.
This game is one of the best games I played. I don't even really like its genres but it has that amazing flow that just keeps you engaged. I am glad that the game was profitable. I am also surprised that it was THAT profitable since I had the impression it did not get enough buzz being released rather close to Celeste and being less pushed by Nintendo than the latter.
@Executer66 Though I am not DoggedFrog, I must tell you the following: Night in the Woods is and AMAZING game if you don't mind gameplay taking der backseat a bit. I have never seen characters that I sympathise this much about in a video game before. They are stunningly well-written. The atmosphere of the game really drew me in, also thanks to the great soundtrack and appealing visuals. I loved this game very very much, so go buy it! There were only two things that might bother some: You get into some sort of daily routine trying to talk to every character all over town every day. That means you run around a lot, sometimes only to discover that they are not there that day. Town is not THAT big though and you get around fast and fun enough. You could also simply not care about talking to everyone, since it really doesn't get you any further. The dialogues and events don't give you any reward. They are the reward. And I loved that, but some might not think that's enough. Also the story becomes a little strange by the end and either VERY meta or a little bit .... just strange. I did not expect it to turn out like that, but I was not too disappointed either. It is more about the characters and their development anyways.
All in all the game made a huge impression on me and immediately became one of my favorite games ever. But I heard some people were not getting the appeal. I think it depends a lot on whether you relate to the characters. And though I do think there is something and someone for almost everyone, I think people who never really struggled with themselves (or society) in their lives, might not find this game that interesting.
@SmaggTheSmug ...because "Hard Rock Hallelujah" is an amazingly intelligent song? I'd say that it is nearly impossible to win Eurovision with something intelligent anyway. But it has its entertaining moments, I got to admit. Usually there are crazy performances. And Lordi definitely were a surprising sight between all usual suspects.
Might go for Kingdom: New Lands and/or Earthlock. Since I recently got Disgaea 5, I am pretty occupied for some time anyways. Also there is still FE waiting for me to finally play it.
@UnknownReader Yeah, someone else told me before that the glitch only occurs if all the DLC is disabled, which I am doing at the moment to refind my way in. I think I never survived very long. Most of the times I don't even survive the first winter. My boyfriend is waaaay better than me, but only because he read a lot of things online. I think it is best to try first yourself to be surprised, but I admit that there are some things you simply would not find out about or only by dying way more often than would be acceptable (e. g. what the different mushrooms do cooked and raw). I think the way you get a new world to explore while also unlocking characters and finding out about new dangers and mechanics really encourages you to keep on trying even though it is so damn hard (especially at the beginning). Keep on having fun and beware winter is coming! ;-]
@Aven Don't start Don't Starve then. Me and my boyfriend were hardcore addicted to this. You can play this for hours and won't even notice. It has this "I am just going to do this one thing!" kind of thing going on where you end up playing another hour because there is always one more thing to do until you die in this game. And then a new character unlocks and you want to try it out immediately.
@nhSnork Thank you! I bought it on Friday and was happy to see that aswell. Only issue I had so far is that beefalos are invisble most of the time except for their shadows. And rabbit holes are never visible at all. Do you have the same issue? Or anyone else? Seems like a strangely obvious bug to overlook, but I contacted Klei and asked if this is known and will be patched.
Picked up Don't Starve for the third time. I am glad that the menu-system is readable compared to the Wii U version. Love to have this on the go. It is so addicting. Though I recognised that this version is a little glitchy. Rabbid holes and Beefalos usually are invisible or appear as shadows until you stand right in front of them. Did anyone else experience this?
@nhSnork I love Don't Starve. I have it on PC, but decided to go for the Wii U version some time ago. Was a little disappointed that the Menu-Icons are waaaaay too small on Wii U. So that version didn't get a lot of playtime. Is it better on Switch? I couldn't read a thing playing on Wii U (on the TV, by the way) at all.
Probably I am gonna buy it anyway. Didn't play the shipwrecked DLC yet. Don't Starve is one of the VERY rare games I don't mind to double dip on. Especially since it would be great for on the go.
Other than that I might get Adventure Pals and Subsurface Circular.
If reviews are good, maybe also Burly Men at Sea sometime. Or Masters of Anima. But not right now.
@JKRiki @gloom Well, I read in the comments of the announcement of this by several people that the game "The Adventure Pals" used to be a browser game way before "Adventure Time" was even a thing. So there's that. Nonetheless agree that there are some confusing similarities in style between the two.
The trailer does not do this game any favor, I guess. The voiceover sounds like a teacher explaining you how to interpret a text. The concept sounds good enough, but there weren't many elements that caught my eye. Looks like it is lacking creativity, but could just be the trailer.
Just bought "This is the Police" and still have 25€ left. Any advice how to spend them? Am interested in Battle Chef Brigade and Oxenfree. But both games are 20€ each and I am not that sure if they are for me. If I pick one of them I might spend the last € on Pan-Pan. Another option would be taking advantage of the actual sale and finally picking up Kingdom: New Lands which had me intrigued for a while. Then there would be 14€ left. I could get World of Goo or The Bidge or Forma.8 and maybe OPUS: The Day we found earth? Was also interested in Gorogoa, but since it only lasts an hour and is cheaper elsewhere.....also Floor Kids, but not sure if it's for me.....also Count Lucanor, but I am not that much into playing spooky games myself....60 Seconds looks interesting....and Frederic: Resurrection of Music......and Poly Bridge....it's unfortunate that even Nintendolife only provides reviews on very few of them....
Tried to play Bulb Boy again. Since there was a bug letting an item disappear in one of the first stages, I stopped playing confusedly. We made it through that level and in the next one we suddenly weren't able to hide in the bin anymore. We stopped playing angrily. Seriously, I usually don't bother about minor bugs, but if they appear that often and you have to restart the level because of stuff like that and hope the error disappears, I do. Anyone else having issues with this game? Does it become better? I wanted to like it.
Thimbleweed Park was pretty good so far. I stopped playing in front of the factory, because I became a little tired of it, though. I like the variety of characters, but sometimes it makes it a little hard to tell who should do what next. I also like the in-game-hint-system, but I started using it quite often because of the above, so I feel a little dirty now and am equally too lazy to return and figure things out by myself and too proud to look it up again. Maybe I am not patient enough anymore for Point and Click games.

And though it was not that memorable to me, all in all it was a really entertaining and well crafted game that I would recommend to fans of pen&paper and or strategy games likewise.
Re: Owlboy On Nintendo Switch Made A Profit Within 24 Hours Of Launch
@NewAdvent
In my opinion it is not that much a metroidvania than rather more of a shooter.
Re: Owlboy On Nintendo Switch Made A Profit Within 24 Hours Of Launch
This game is one of the best games I played. I don't even really like its genres but it has that amazing flow that just keeps you engaged. I am glad that the game was profitable. I am also surprised that it was THAT profitable since I had the impression it did not get enough buzz being released rather close to Celeste and being less pushed by Nintendo than the latter.
Re: Nintendo Download: 17th May (Europe)
Banner Saga! And maybe either Earthlock or more likely Battle Chasers physical!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?
@Executer66
Though I am not DoggedFrog, I must tell you the following:
Night in the Woods is and AMAZING game if you don't mind gameplay taking der backseat a bit. I have never seen characters that I sympathise this much about in a video game before. They are stunningly well-written. The atmosphere of the game really drew me in, also thanks to the great soundtrack and appealing visuals.
I loved this game very very much, so go buy it!
There were only two things that might bother some:
You get into some sort of daily routine trying to talk to every character all over town every day.
Re: Random: Pikachu Makes A Surprise Cameo For Israel At This Year’s Eurovision
@SmaggTheSmug
...because "Hard Rock Hallelujah" is an amazingly intelligent song?
I'd say that it is nearly impossible to win Eurovision with something intelligent anyway. But it has its entertaining moments, I got to admit. Usually there are crazy performances. And Lordi definitely were a surprising sight between all usual suspects.
Re: Review: Stakes Winner (Switch eShop / Neo Geo)
The appearance of this made me feel nostalgic. But for Pocket Card Jockey. Loved that game!
Re: Nintendo Download: 10th May (Europe)
Might go for Kingdom: New Lands and/or Earthlock.
Since I recently got Disgaea 5, I am pretty occupied for some time anyways.
Also there is still FE waiting for me to finally play it.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?
@UnknownReader
Yeah, someone else told me before that the glitch only occurs if all the DLC is disabled, which I am doing at the moment to refind my way in.
Keep on having fun and beware winter is coming! ;-]
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th April (Europe)
@Aven
Don't start Don't Starve then.
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th April (Europe)
@nhSnork
Thank you!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?
@Rontanamo_Bay
You must be joking.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?
Picked up Don't Starve for the third time. I am glad that the menu-system is readable compared to the Wii U version. Love to have this on the go. It is so addicting.
Though I recognised that this version is a little glitchy. Rabbid holes and Beefalos usually are invisible or appear as shadows until you stand right in front of them.
Did anyone else experience this?
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th April (Europe)
@nhSnork
I love Don't Starve.
Re: Review: The Adventure Pals (Switch eShop)
@JKRiki @gloom
Well, I read in the comments of the announcement of this by several people that the game "The Adventure Pals" used to be a browser game way before "Adventure Time" was even a thing.
So there's that.
Nonetheless agree that there are some confusing similarities in style between the two.
Re: Monster Crown Aims To Bring Pokémon-Inspired Monster Taming To The Switch
Probably a buy from me too. The original Pokemon games were some of my very first games and the ones I loved most for quite some time!
Re: Dark Horror Platformer Dream Alone Will Spook Its Way Onto Switch Soon
The trailer does not do this game any favor, I guess. The voiceover sounds like a teacher explaining you how to interpret a text. The concept sounds good enough, but there weren't many elements that caught my eye. Looks like it is lacking creativity, but could just be the trailer.
Re: Nintendo Download: 21st December (Europe)
Re: Feature: Ten Nintendo Switch Games That Are Perfect for Halloween
