Resident Evil is now 20 years old, another landmark to make some of us feel rather old. Beginning with fixed camera angles, limited ammo and a spooky mansion, it's a series that's evolved to incorporate faster action - for better and worse, depending on the game - and a whole load of movies that keep doing the job at the box office. It is, without doubt, one of Capcom's most valuable franchises.
The series has hit 66 million game sales so far, and Capcom is promising a strong year of celebration.
The anniversary celebrations will continue over the next year and the team is already hard at work to deliver some amazing new surprises. Stay tuned to our channels throughout the year for more news on what the team has in store.
In addition there's a video interview with series producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi which is well worth a watch.
The series as a whole, particularly some of the older entries, have certainly had a big impact on pop culture. As our own mini-tribute we want to share this classic scene from Spaced, a UK TV show that captured how intense the horror was 'back in the day'. There's a bit of fake gore and brief swearing, by the way.
Are you a long term fan of Resident Evil, and what do you want to see next from the series? More Nintendo releases would be nice, as a start. Let us know what you think in the comments.

"hard at work to deliver some amazing new surprises" A Nintendo release would be a surprise?
I kid... I think.
It must be time for an all new Resident Evil... for the NX... sad now
@abe_hikura
A Resident Evil NX launch game would be pretty spectacular. I'd be happy if somehow nintendo can get REmake 2 when it comes out.
Is the surprise "Don't expect anything forthcoming to any Nintendo console"?
@Smoo I'd love an NX bundle with the RE0, RE1 and RE2
More Capcom games for the NX I say.
@johnodaz Here here!
I think it's time they remade the remakes of the remakes.
A RE game in VR will be excellent. It will scare the sh*t out of everyone.
Have to be honest, I'm not overly confident about Resident Evil's future. I think it all lies on the next numbered instalment, they have a big chance coming off the back of Revelations 2, I just hope they don't mess it up!
Please port all remakes, Revelations 1&2 port to the NX for launch with re7 to come too. Some duds in the franchise but main I'd love to have them all complete on my shelf on one Nintendo system.
the Resident Evils games never interested me, to say sadly.
@readyletsgo i don't remember where i read this but hd remakes are now a major part of the capcom strategy so when nx comes out, it's almsot assured that we'll see them along with the upcoming umbrella corps.
If they return to proper survival horror I'm all in. 5 and 6 were crap IMO. Only played 6 for 1/2 an hour before I quite playing. Please Capcom, give us what we want. Fans of the series should check out the manga by the way.
@Jamotello
Haven't herd of umbrella corps. Will have to check it out.
I still enjoy the Resident Evil core series (1-6 and Code Verinica). I found them all enjoyable in their own ways.
Resident Evil 1-3 Brilliant games played to death both playstation version and game cube versions, 4 just got silly, never even bothered with 5
@Jamotello really? That's cool for NX if true. I'd buy them all up or hopefully a boxed collection.
I have been collecting all the rereleases for xbone and ps3 at the moment. I know it's a waste of money, but, I love having them. So yeah I'm part of the capcom problem. Lol
I love Simon Pegg.
A good surprise would be if they made RE7 and it was actually good and on a Nintendo console.
I just hope nintendo get included with whatever resi games get anounced...
I'd love to see a new one in the series, but low and behold, we'll just get the same remakes of the remakes of the remakes. How many times can they remake and re-release the original over and over again? Come on, make a really good collection of Zero to part 6. Then do another collection of the others that came out. That would be a nice collection to make for all of the new systems, instead of releasing them on the stores for download only (PS, I know they made the Origins Collection for PS4 and XONE). It would be nice for all of them to come to Wii U, since Zero, 1, 2, 3, 4 and Code Veronica came on Gamecube and Wii.
I remember me and my best friend playing RE2 late at night during sleep overs and getting freaked out of our minds. I remember it looked so amazing. Haha. Just beat the Wii RE4 the other week for the first time. Best RE ever!
I kind of expect them to just put the rest of the Wii RE games onto the eShop and call it a day...
How much of these 'surprises' will be available on Nintendo platforms, I wonder......
Really, after Capcom decided to skip Nintendo platforms with those couple of remakes and Revelations 2, my Resident Evil mood has just vanished for the most part. Which is sad because before Revelations 2 was announced, the first part was one of my most-played games on Wii U, even after already completing the 3DS version.
I think the Wii RE games getting released to the eShop would be nice. I just re-purchased Umbrella Chronicles; having a download would be preferred!
Xbone and ps4 are getting re 4,5 and 6 this year. I know ps had a sale a couple weeks ago but that's all I know as far as celebration for the anniversary.
Meh. I'm kinda off with the Resident evil series. The last one I had fun with was Darkside C and the only ones that have been good are remasters from the GC. Hopefully they can get the series back on track with a RE2 remake and RE7
I think I must have bet RE4 at least 5 times across the GCN & Wii... (The only RE I have actually finished)
An actually good RE game would be nice! There hasn't been one since 4.
Bleh! Resident Evil is now just the corpse of its former self. I'll keep playing 4 until they release something worthwhile again.
Unfortunately, Capcom isnt doing anything Resi Evil related on a Nintendo console.
