@GeminiSaint: I have played and beaten Maze of Galious and I can assure you it is not nearly as hard and confusing as La-Mulana. I really enjoyed it.
@ZarroTsu: Ah yes, I know the tactic how to beat the last boss. What turned me off is the fact that, if you die, you always start at the surface and have to walk a long way back to the true shrine.
@mariofanatic: There is a save system in the PC version too. (The game is huge. It took me more than 20 days to even get to the last boss.) But you start always at the same point and have to use so called teleport-shrines to get to where you want to go.
This is usually not a big problem but in case of the last boss fight it's a pain because you can't directly get near to the boss. You have to walk a loooong way instead. I would say if you want to beat your games and feel bad about not doing so (like me), you better pass on this one. Cave Story is way easier.
I have beaten 99% of La-Mulana. The last boss fight against MOTHER is pretty hard. But the worst thing about it is: When you die you will be send back all the way to the beginning of the game and have to walk through two big areas full with enemies to start the boss battle again (you can't avoid that even if you use teleporters). This is so annoying I can't even tell you. After doing it 20 times I quitted the game and never touched it again since then.
La-Mulana is easily the most terrible game I've played in the last five years. I hate it. It's so freaking hard and abstruse that in comparison even the first Castlevania game is easy like taking candy from a kid.
^ I would say Bonk's Adventure for the NES is basically an adaption of the PC-Engine (TG16) version with toned down graphics. Never seen the arcade version.
@StarBoy: Yes, but it was only released in Japan, maybe this is why you've never heard of it. I think it's a pretty good game. I hope it comes as import game to the VC. http://www.changevworld.com/sonson2/sonson2.htm
I love Bonk's Adventure for the PCE. This SNES version looks interesting too. But I would rather buy Bonk's Revenge and Bonk 3 for the PC-Engine first.
@cheetahman91: What? Musha runs with 50Hz? As far as i know there never was a european release of this game. What were they thinking? It's okay for me when they keep the games in their original form even if it means that we europeans always get the 50Hz PAL stuff. But when they alter a game from 60Hz to 50Hz that just makes no sense.
@Rebel81: Since Super Bonk was released in USA only it is 60Hz only. The title of the european version is Super B.C. Kid which is 50Hz. Nintendo always keeps the games in their original form which I think is good.
I know Cave Story inside and out. Already played the PC version in may 2009. Sorry, Nicalis. But you have to be faster next time. Much faster! (It's too late for La-Mulana, too.)
I would say the Genre is "Strategy" and not "Puzzle". Also there is one thing I always miss in reviews: Can you save your game after each mission? Or is it start from scratch every time?
Wikipedia says: "...there is a reward for getting all snowflakes in every stage, and the final battle cannot be accessed until you have finished all stages" (referring to the 2006 version).
@12+17: I don't think so. You get the download at the end of the level even if you don't have all the collectibles. All you need to do is run through the level. I have played the level with 18 stars or so and then again with all 24 stars and nothing changed at all.
Another two 500 points games for WiiWare this week. Seems that Nintendo noticed that many people buy games because they're cheap and not because they're good.
Robox is a pretty good game. The graphics are beautiful with a very nice parallax effect and there are no framerate issues like in other WiiWare releases. What I saw in the demo is pretty varied. There are "point and shoot" sections, the puzzle gameplay in the interior of the robot and of course the game itself, it's much like Metroid.
What annoys me (judging from the demo) is the very slow pace of the movement inside the robot. And the extremely dull music. And most of all: The lack of a map. The lack of a map is the most terrible thing in this game. But I think it's still recommendable if you have a good sense of orientation. If Dreambox Games make Robox 2 someday then PLEASE ADD A MAP!!!
@Guybrush_Threepwood: I always have set my Wii to 60Hz because this affects the framerate of many new Wii games. But when playing old retro games I want them to be like they used to be in germany back then. Without constantly switching between 50Hz and 60Hz in the system menu.
But I agree that they could additionally include the NTSC-versions of the ROMs and let you choose in a startup screen if you want to play the PAL or the NTSC version of the ROM. I think in case of Super Mario 1, 2 and 3 it doesn't really matter if they are in english or german.
But Nintendo don't wants us to purchase the US-versions of the ROMs. So if you want to play them, you better get your SNESXY or VirtuaABC ready. Nintendo loves emulation.
20 years ago nobody cared about this "problem" and the games were fun in Europe. And now they aren't? Apparently the folks at Nintendo are not able to reprogram the games to support both 50- and 60Hz modes. So they sell the PAL versions for PAL machines. How shocking!
It's good that there are more demos coming up. As for Fate. Ah... no. I wait for something that interests me more to come along. Wasn't there supposed to be a game with Zombies on a plane or something like that? Or is it just cancelled?
I agree that Space Harrier II for the Mega Drive can be considered as something different.
But Space Harrier for the Master System is an inferior port of the arcade version. And the arcade game is the original. So, how can the Master System version have a better review score than the arcade version. Sorry, but this just makes no sense to me.
Oh, yes. The Master System version has a 6/10. Space Harrier II on the Mega Drive has 4/10 and the original arcade version has a 5/10. I think this says it all. You aren't serious about this, are you?
I love this game. It's still so much fun. And the difficulty is not too hard. You can select Easy mode in the options if you want, you can have fast auto firing and you get a ton of extra lives during the bonus stages. What can you ask more for?
I think the gameplay and difficulty in these early Mega Drive games was just right. The graphics and the levels are very colourful and compelling. And the music is pretty varied too and perfectly fits to the game. I almost like this more than the arcade game. Though, the arcade version which is also on the VC is pretty awesome, too.
It's a weak week for WiiWare. The only thing that interests me is the Chronos Twins Demo. Ok, cannot expect a top-quality game every single week. And there are still enough good ones I haven't bought yet.
If someone told me that I would own the original Sega Arcade version of Space Harrier someday. I would have said they were crazy. This game alone is worth to own the Wii if you can appreciate classic, original games.
I remember playing the really crappy C64 version (from Elite systems) over and over and over again because I've seen this game in an arcade and I loved it soo much. And I wanted it! Yes, more than anything else in the world. And now I can have it for 8 Euros. That's awesome. Yipee!
And about the score. Who cares? I mean, if you started playing games with Super Mario Galaxy then this one in comparison looks like a load of crap. Not even worth a 5/10. But if you started playing games with things like Pong or Space Invaders then it makes your heart race when you see it and only a rating of 12/10 is acceptable.
I don't know why everyone is waiting for these halfheartedly co-produced game adaptions from Nicalis. Both Cave Story and La-Mulana work (and look) great on the PC and you don't have to pay 10 bucks in advance and then wait desperately for some bugfixes.
Doesn't look bad. Would be good as screensaver. But I don't think I would pay 500 points for a screensaver. Instead, I'm taking time to find my old Dr. Mario cartridge.

Re: Help WiiWare Demos Get a Time Extension and Win BIT.TRIP FATE
@Token Girl + y2josh: You need "And Yet it moves" to participate and you can win "Bit.Trip Fate" as far as I understand.
Re: Help WiiWare Demos Get a Time Extension and Win BIT.TRIP FATE
They're giving away 3 (in words: three) copies of Fate to the funniest/most creative people. The chance of winning is very small.

A flash game for the PC? Why no (free) WiiWare release? Does this at least work with the Internet Channel?
Edit: No, it doesn't.
