It's Monday morning, which means it's time for the Nintendo Download Update news in Europe, as we're informed of the delights on the way this week. There's a double helping of Mega Man, more retro treats, a new title and a host of discounts. Let's get to the details.
Wii U Virtual Console
Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge (Capcom, €6.99 / £6.29) — The second of this spin-off series to come to the Wii U via its Game Boy Advance library, this continues the same principles as its predecessor, though you're now battling through a tournament to win a rare Battle Chip. Expect more turn-based shenanigans, and we'll get working on a review.
Mach Rider (Nintendo, €3.99 / £3.59) — An early NES title that was perhaps overshadowed by its contemporaries, this is nevertheless a fun, fast-paced futuristic racer. With some combat elements and a basic level editor, however, it's a rather decent retro title — you can learn more about it in our Mach Rider review. This is the US version of the game.
Wii U Virtual Console Promotion
The following discounts are available if a copy of either NES Remix or NES Remix 2 is on the same Wii U.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Nintendo, €3.49 / £2.44 until 14th August, normally €4.99 / £3.49)
Donkey Kong Jr. (Nintendo, €2.49 / £1.74 until 14th August, normally €4.99 / £3.49)
Mario Bros. (Nintendo, €2.49 / £1.74 until 14th August, normally €4.99 / £3.49)
Kid Icarus (Nintendo, €2.49 / £1.74 until 14th August, normally €4.99 / £3.49)
GOLF (Nintendo, €2.49 / £1.74 until 14th August, normally €4.99 / £3.49)
Baseball (Nintendo, €2.49 / £1.74 until 14th August, normally €4.99 / £3.49)
Tennis (Nintendo, €2.49 / £1.74 until 14th August, normally €4.99 / £3.49)
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Disney Planes (Disney, €19.99 / £17.49 until 21st August, normally €39.99 / £34.99)
BLOK DROP U (RCMADIAX, €0.99 / £0.79 until 21st August, normally €1.49 / £1.29)
Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails (Dakko Dakko, €4.99 / £4.49 until 14th August, normally €9.99 / £8.99)
Abyss (EnjoyUp Games, €0.49 / £0.44 until 21st August, normally €1.99 / £1.79)
Unepic (EnjoyUp Games, €8.49 / £7.64 until 21st August, normally €9.99 / £8.99)
Wii U eShop Permanent Discount Promotion
Toki Tori 2+ (Two Tribes, €5.99 / £5.00 if EDGE, RUSH and Toki Tori have been downloaded from Nintendo eShop on the same Wii U. Regular price is €14.99 / £12.99)
3DS eShop
Rabi Laby 3 (Agetec, €4.99 / £4.49) — The series makes its début on 3DS, bringing more of its clever puzzles that require you to manoeuvre two characters. Not much has changed or evolved over its DSiWare predecessors, yet this is still a charming and relatively fun title — check out our Rabi Laby 3 review for the full lowdown.
3DS Virtual Console
Mega Man II (Capcom, €3.99 / £3.59) — It's taken a little time, but this (along with the Wii U VC title above) arrives to kick off a month of Mega Man games in Europe, similar to that in North America. This portable entry continued the trend of re-purposing content from the NES titles; unfortunately it's not actually very good, in our view, as explained in our Mega Man II review.
Xtreme Sports (WayForward, €4.99 / £4.49) — This Game Boy Color title combines a host of sports presented with a twist, while you also explore the island / venue "to find friends, foes and even a few hidden treats". We'll put a sweatband on and get cracking on a review.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Disney Planes (Disney, €14.99 / £13.49 until 21st August, normally €29.99 / £24.99)
Snow Moto Racing 3D (Zordix AB, €3.99 / £3.59 until 21st August, normally €7.99 / £7.19)

Kid Icarus because I've never played any KI game yet.
Still waiting for MM Battle Network review. I will wait for Battle Chip Challenge review too.
Megaman Battle chip challange is a game I wanted in the past... maybe I'll get it even if I still didn't buy Battle network 1... Scram kitty discount is not bad too, another possible purchase ^^ Hmmm? Rabi Laby 3? I was waiting for that game ^o^ My my... there is even Xtreme sports from wayforward I really wanted to check that out!
...
...
Wait... there is too much for me this week @o@;;;
Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge for sure! Can't believe MMBN series is continually being released as VC, it's a dream come true <3
I've officially given up on hoping for n64 on VC. It's never going to happen.
The 3DS VC lives!
@Boxmonkey
Maybe they'll wait for the Majora's Mask 3D to be released and wait a few months or 6 before they start releasing N64 VCs.
Abyss for practically nothing? It's a short, cheap game that's as free as Nintendo gaming gets. At 75% off, it's a steal.
I'm still hoping for a decent sale in NA on either Knytt Underground or Unepic.
Both were fun playing (pretentious, frustrating, middling, and obnoxious too) I just don't have the spare cash to commit to owning them.
Aside from Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta, my year's calendar is open, so those two games could fill the void.
Nothing for me this week as I'm saving up for this little bad boy for my collection http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161383301127?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1586.l2649
@Boxmonkey Not out of the blue... They will announce it before releasing the individual titles (Direct etc.).
Now that's a very unepic discount for Unepic.
I'm tempted to get Kid Icarus as I've never played it before.
I thought Battle Chip Challenge was pretty awful when it was released back in the day. I really couldn't get into how the battles work in that game. So I think I might skip it and just wait for Battle Network 2, which is really good.
Have been holding off Scram Kitty but will be grabbing it at that price.
Scram Kitty for me!
Where are Shovel Knight and 1001 Spikes? Living in the EU really does suck sometimes.
Are you sure Mach Rider is £3.59? Every other NES game is £3.49.
I have The Lost Levels and Kid Icarus, I'll be getting the other five NES games on sale. £1.74 is an acceptable price for them. But these are what they should have cost in the first place. Hopefully Metroid will be on sale next week.
I'll be getting it but I think they should have spread out the Battle Network games more. I only just downloaded the last Battle Network game.
Ive paid full price for scram kitty and unepic and I say its worthy !! Get it
Scram Kitty and Abyss for me, I somehow managed NOT to buy them thus far. Maybe my backlog stacked up a bit too ridiculously high...
Now this is how the Wii U VC should be like, more than 1 game released at a time though NA will probably only get Mega Man 5 or 6. I will get Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge, just not sure if I'll do it this week.
Kid Icarus is the same as Kirby's Adventure for me (I don't see why anybody wouldn't get the 3d Classic).
I didn't get Kirby's Adventure 3D Classic because I thought it was too expensive for what it is. I downloaded the NES game on Wii years ago and only had to pay 99p for it on Wii U. I don't need it on 3DS as well.
@DBailey: "Where are Shovel Knight and 1001 Spikes? Living in the EU really does suck sometimes."
This.
Yes, it sucks how we have been getting some VC games first long before America does and a lot more discounts than in America. They don't even have Super Mario Kart yet.
Hi Guys!!! The Unepic and AByss promotion is condicional:
EnjoyUp Games loyalty offer until 21/08/2014: If you downloaded Unepic or Abyss from Nintendo eShop on Wii U, you can purchase the other game with a discount from Nintendo eShop on the same Wii U.
Thanks for your support!
@datamonkey Nice find, I've never seen it in its box before. Have you read the back of the box? Captain Falcon: "Real men don't use brakes!" XD
...
Still nothing I've been waiting for.
OK, this is the promotion:
Abyss – €0.49/£0.44 (If you own Unepic. Ends August 21)
Unepic – €8.49/£7.64 (If you own Abyss. Ends August 21
Scram Kitty seems underpriced. Makes sure that people on the fence scram and get their eShop funds ready for this.
Blok Drop U sale before it was released in Germany? The developer said something like he would introduce the game to Germany either before or with a sale, right? Does this mean it's coming to the German eShop now, or does it mean it is delayed and we get this on another sale later this year. Or does it mean the developer doesn't care at the moment, and still needs to make sales before even attempting paying for the USK rating?
I'd definately jump on the UnEpic/Abyss promo if I didn't have them already.
Out of the NES Remix VC games only Golf missing in my collection. (Well, I if you don't count me having it on Animal Crossing GC).
Somewhat interested in Mega Man Battle Chips. Looks very different from the regular MM games.
@Pahvi The PAL version is a right mess a real mess of 50hz and hacks just for the speed of Kirby. (So is it in NES remix if that slowdown is present in the VC release.) It is a good game but I cannot see how anybody would want to play it not working properly.
Has Unepic been getting updated (Like the Steam version was - It is loads better than it was when I first got it) ?
@JoakimZ Perfectly reasonable
BCC was a...weird experiment. Its basicly the precurser to many mobile games these days Build your deck and watch it go while you idle around.
And yet, i always find back to it. It has a certain charme to it, the sountrack is among the best of the series and the deck building to suit the respective tournement can get rather tricky at times.
Definitly not everyones cup of tea but i do like it for some off reasons
I'll be picking up Scram Kitty.
People, do yourselves a favour and get Scram Kitty if somehow you dont have it.
Might try kid Icarus and DK Jr being cheap. Stop with all that Megaman tho Capcom..u have many good games!
I've heard good things about Scram Kitty, so I may just download it as the sale is online. And Abyss for 44p? WHAT A STEAL!
REALLY excited for Battle Chips also.
@sinalefa I haven't picked it up yet. I hope the sale will include the NA region.
EDIT: Read the full promotion.
Scram Kitty for me, and Abyss+Unepic if I have the funds!
Stop with all that Megaman tho Capcom..u have many good games!
The games you're talking about are either licensed from Marvel or Disney so no go. Or they are not on consoles supported by the Virtual Console, so no go again.
Otherwise, we are getting several other Capcom games that aren't Mega Man in the coming months.
Heck, if NA gets those discounts, I'll be all over Scram Kitty and Abyss.
Can't wait for Megaman BN 3 that was an amazing game. Too bad the amazing trade and battle feature isn't used in the VC versions :/
@outburst battle network is great.
Very tempted by the Scram Kitty discount. My only concern is that I heard it gets really tough in places.
Great ive been waiting for Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails to be discounted since i got my MK8 Wii U and this Abyss game looks Ok especially for 44p.
Unepic!~!~!
I totally forgot about that game.
Oooh, if the Scram Kitty discount comes to the Americas, this means it's finally time for me to get it.
Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails and maybe BLOK DROP U for me this week.
@SanderEvers Thanks. I just checked out Yacht Club site. Almost half way there!
Scram kitty at that price is an easy buy for me
I wonder what 1 thing NA will get for Wii U. It will probably be the same Megaman game.
I'm really looking for Pokémon TCG for Virtual Console here in America. Why is it taking so long? It's okay, I'm patient, but hey! Just release every Nintendo published GameBoy Color game already, everyone will be satisfied for months.
Still waiting for Harvest Moon 2 on 3ds vc!
Scram Kitty seems to have gone on sale rather early in its life and half price at that.Does this imply that it hasn't sold very well?
Unepic, Abyss and Blok Drop U for £8.87?
...
Well, it would simply be rude not to!
@OorWullie Apparently it is on sale for the developers 4th birthday.
I'm actually tempted at getting Scram Kitty, but heard it's quite tough, is it true? I'm not really into tough games ._.
Raby Laby 3 and maybe Unepic for me as I already have Abyss.
Might grab a couple of the VC titles whilst they're cheap too...surprised Donkey Kong 3 hasn't been included in the recent discounts though.
I hope Nintendo make a Snes Remix game that would be amazing !
Anyone else notice that are slowing down 3DS games I think 2015 nintendo at E3 will unveil a new handheld console.
Hey, NL
The Unepic / Abyss discounts are actually contingent on ownerships. As in, if you own one, you can get the discount for the other.
The discount will NOT be available for all gamers.
The guys at Nintendo Everything confirmed this already.
Abyss and block drop for sure but that scram kitty offer is tempting...I go to a festival this weekend so I'll see what I have left to get me through a week long hangover!
Shove... Awww, I might just forget about it.
Abyss only 44p. Might get it just because of that.
Mach Rider for 3.99. So Nintendo really allows variable price tags for Virtual Console games generally and aside from some special releases, after they already introduced this with the GBA VC. Good thing. Mach Rider for instance always looked quite interesting to me, but as with many other "small" titles, 4.99 had been too much.
Wow. I literally just bought and beat Scram Kitty like 4 days ago. That's disappointing. Seems like it went on sale kind of fast..
Anyways.. if anyone has any questions about the game feel free to ask me.
Nothing this week again. I say that my next eshop game will be SMT IV unless something surprises me. Anyway I am shocked at Mega Man II prices. Would have thought they would have sold it for €5, I know it is only a € difference but still they could have should it for that price and it would still sell.
I'm definitely picking up Scram Kitty & Kid Icarus. I already own everything else that interests me.
Unepic and Abyss cost together normally €11.98; with the discount they are „only“ €10.48. If you already own one of the games you have to pay the rest up to €10.48. The real discount is simply 12,5%.
@JulioMoruno I like a lot of your games, but please make next time a “real” promo. Even Nintendos Nes-Remix promotion offer is better if you only buy one NES game with 50%...
