Metroid Dread is out today – you knew that of course – and that gives us the perfect excuse to showcase the amazing pixel artwork of a talented individual called Kercy.
Kercy has a real skill for turning 3D video game characters into lovely 2D pixel art sprites that wouldn't look out of place in a Capcom fighter like Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and they've been working on a series of Samus Aran-related creations recently:
That's not all, however; Kercy has also produced sprites for Zelda and Bayonetta, and it's striking how authentic these look – it really does feel like they've jumped right out of a Capcom crossover brawler.
With Ryu in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, perhaps some Nintendo characters could go in the other direction? Maybe not, but at least we have Kercy's creations to gaze at.

Nicely done, definitely captured that 2d Capcom art style, one of my favourite art styles in video games before the mannequins came in and took away the personality sprites have.
That's really cool. Nintendo vs. Capcom done in the style of MvC2 would be incredible.
@OldManHermit Can you imagine?!
I don't need to imagine. Mugen make all these come true.
Buff Samus looks kinda odd to be honest, but the rest works pretty well.
Careful. Nintendo may issue a cease and desist order to you.
Zelda and Power Suit Samus look out of place.
But Bayonetta and Zero Suit Samus look right at home.
Speaking of the game how abou ---
Never mind. SIGH
Looks fantastic!
@Damo I can! I'm just picturing all the potential match ups. Link vs Sir Arthur, Samus vs MegaMan X, Ganondorf vs Virgil, Peach vs Jill Valentine, etc.
Thick thighs!!
@Duffman92 I thought so too. And that's an element of the Capcom Street Fighter Alpha art style I never liked, even back in the '90s. It's one reason I switched to being an SNK guy. I think SNK sprite style(KOF 97 style) and proportions would have worked better for regular Samus here, but that's a matter of style.
Overall, this is great work and I love to see it. Really high-quality sprite work. Samus in the suits look especially good. I also like the green hair. I've said before, if every game was 2D and looked like it was straight from the Neo Geo or CPS2, I wouldn't be unhappy. Nice to see at least some characters adapted to that style. It's still so beautiful.
Capcom's pixel work in that series was amazing, completely captured the essence of the characters. It's a shame that they don't create more games with his kind of art direction.
Looking good. The sprite work is very well done.
I really do miss sprite work done at a first party level.
I'm digging Samus and Bayonetta, but when did Zelda start working out? She looks like an Amazon in that picture.
Aside from that, I know long flowing tresses are canon for Samus, but it will never feel right to me. She should have had a pixie cut or even a buzz cut from day one.
Samus was so close to being playable in DoA once, then there was the time they pick Anna to don the Zero suit instead of Nina in Tekken Tournament, seemed like a no brainer to me.
I think characters like Samus and Captain Falcon are the ideal ones to cross over into these arcade fighters.
Man, Classic Speedrun Samus is almost George Kamitani buff :3
She makes the Power Suit look like a limiter rather than an enhancement xD
Man when is he gonna get hit with a cease and desist letter? The moment he said Patreon, Nintendo was like "unleash the lawyers, get me my money"
Give me a traditional Nintendo fighting game. 2D pixel art, Smash roster, and combo's/supers like Arc Systems games.
@Chamver That'd be cool to have, and then we go into UMVC3 style graphics with the necessary sequel.
I can honestly say I've never wondered what a flagship Nintendo character would look like in "Marvel" vs "Capcom" lol
@Duffman92 She doesn't skip leg day.
LET THAT BE A LESSON TO YOU BOYS
I want a Metroid game, that looks like that
Bayonetta looks more like she's straight out of Dark Stalkers.
