Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS is Discontinued Globally - An Era Ends

JohnSReid

I felt this was the way things were going. I wanted to buy a NN3DS for my daughter for Christmas and they were bloody expensive! The year before I snagged a NN3DS for less than £100 with a NSMB2 download code included.

Coupled with the fact that the only new devices being released were XL bundles it was pretty clear before we knew about the NN2DS things were slowing down.

Re: Discord is Interested in Supporting Nintendo Switch, But Don't Hold Your Breath

JohnSReid

@Zyph I've been pointing that out to people when it's raised as well. Nintendo are probably mindful that any wifi transmissions on top of encoding / decoding voice etc would be a significant drain on a carefully balanced CPU.

It's easy for us to say "just put it on the hardware", but we don't appreciate the ins-and-outs of how the chipset works.

That said, if there had been some way to avoid the Squid adapter that we've seen already then that would have been worth some serious consideration.

Re: We Know There's An Appetite For Virtual Console On Switch, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

JohnSReid

@TJM All valid points and I hope that you're right.

I think the key thing you've alluded to - Nintendo have lined up a great year for releases on the Switch.

It's easy to assume that Nintendo are this massive company that have unlimited resources to make all of these things happen - but sometimes they need to set priorities.

I'm sure that Reggie would love to be able to say "Here it is..." but the decision isn't down to him.

I'm glad that Nintendo are considering how they want to present the VC service. I just hope that what is delivered is worth the time and waiting and not just cobbled together at the last minute.

Re: Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers Scraps Its Way Into UK Top 10

JohnSReid

I admit that I bought USFII - although I managed to snag it for £30 from Smyths so I didn't feel completely ripped off.

And I must say that settling down to play it - it's a blast.

Yeah, I know it's not a complete re-imaging and that there are other versions out there - but SFII is simply the purest beat 'em up out there and I'm loving it.

I have the Disgeea demo but haven't played it yet. Maybe when I get around to it I might be able to see if I would like to get on board with it.

Re: SwitchCharge Smashes Its Funding Goal

JohnSReid

I get what they're trying to do, but I think that it's finding a problem that doesn't really exist.

As many have already said, an external battery is probably more practical, flexible, and doesn't add heat to the system.

I'd you're concerned about the USB port in tabletop mode, grab the Hori stand... or better yet a Guardian amiibo

I was genuinely tempted by this, but when they said it would be thin and light, I struggled to buy the credibility.

I hope that I'm proven though, because if they do pull it off it would be great for those that find themselves on trains and planes often. I'm just not one of them.

Re: Here's Why Speedrunners Prefer The Wii U Version Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

JohnSReid

@NEStalgia There are many different categories for speedrunning. The article specifically mentions "any %" - meaning Start > Beat Ganon with no other requirement.

I'm sure there will be other runners beating the Divine Beasts and setting times.

First to Master Sword

etc etc.

It's all about the fun of finding the shortest path to complete the set criteria. And I'll give speedrunners their due - solid hand/eye coordination and constantly trying out things that us mere mortal players wouldn't even consider.

Re: Don't Start A New Game Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild If You Want To Keep Your Save Data

JohnSReid

@Mainer82 I'd rather have MY save game on MY console so that I can share MY cartridge between devices.

Not every peg fits every hole. To me this is by design on the Switch. Especially as account switching is so ridiculously quick and simple.

That being said - a backup / copy feature is needed at some point and I do agree with you there. But that's not what this article is about.

Re: Downloadable Games for the Switch Will Be Locked to One Console at a Time

JohnSReid

It's not surprising - however it's getting ridiculous for anyone owning more than one console.

Want to play Splatoon or Mario Kart locally? Two Switches, two (not inexpensive) games for the privilege.

Once again - there is absolutely no incentive to buy games digitally from Nintendo. At least with cartridges I can easily share a between devices - plus it's cheaper.

Sigh. A little disappointed, but I was braced for this news.

Re: Video: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's New Trailer Is All About The Battle Mode

JohnSReid

The question is... How many copies of MK8 do you need with 8 Switches.

Nintendo STILL have not addressed how local play will work. Does each player need a copy of MK8?

Is there a download play option a la the DS / 3DS?

Is there a multiplayer-only version in the eShop that the other switches can play (like Federation Force)?

So many questions.... and only a limited budget.

Re: Unreal Engine 4 Will Be Supported on Nintendo Switch

JohnSReid

I know that we haven't seen touch support yet, but it's worth pointing out that the X1 has a special Active Stylus 2 support baked into the chipset.

This allows a 'semi-dumb' stylus to become very responsive and pressure sensitive.

I cannot imagine Nintendo just passing over this tech based on previous titles.
