Re: Nintendo Hacker Gary Bowser Says Conviction Was "A Blessing"

@Telin Yeah I hear you. I think it's most likely his wages will be garnished in perpetuity: forever until they deem it fit to end the practice. Sort of like an extra, large tax on our paychecks.

Afaik, if this works similar to alimony or repaying government loans for education in some countries, there probably will be someone checking each cheque or bank account.

He'll have to submit these statements directly to them, regularly, rather than straight to his bank... Or, as I hear it from others' regarding their divorce payments or debts, someone paying him regularly in an official capacity, like an employer, would need to submit their payments to him through a go-between person appointed by the courts.

I honestly think "debt collection" cases, like this or unlike it, are why a lot of employers started asking for credit checks when someone applies to work for them. I've had to submit those from my bank and the first time I thought it was invasive. People don't wanna deal with other people's money problems, I guess.

"... likely be in significant debt for years to come."

That's only if he was living paycheck to paycheck. The deal is for 20-30% of the SURPLUS of his income, i.e., the disposable income portion after living expenses and real estate (mortgage, rent or property tax) are due.

Otherwise Nintendo's lawsuit's judge sentenced Gary Bowser to death-by-homelessness (i.e starvation and whatever the word for dying of thirst is called; one dies from thirst long before hunger kicks it).

Other readers, notice how I write the "i.e." abbreviation rather than the "aka" acronym. Some of you are old enough to have seen the contexts of both.

Re: Soapbox: It Feels Like Everyone Forgot The Best Switch RPG Of The Year

Jark

I would take Chained Echoes or Sea of Stars over it, as far as JRPGs and "RPGs" go. There's another very indie JRPG that released on all platforms that was surprisingly good but I forget its name. Someone on the Xbox store wrote a user review saying "take that Chained Echoes!" and that should give you a clue lol.

(Chained Echoes released so late in 2022 that it was practically 2023).

Re: Hands On: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Royally Delivers On Switch

Narrative doesn't necessarily take a backseat if it's implicitly told. Neither does plot, though one could argue that it's actually more about plot taking a backseat than narrative (if you're confused, please research the differences between story, plot and narrative; there are overlaps but these are not synonyms).

Re: Visions Of Mana Announced By Square Enix, But Not For Switch

"Seemingly"... Is there like some sort of textbook standard that softly prohibits writers from using synonyms?

Also, how's that "roadmap" looking for 2024? Eh? Oh, sorry that debate was on sister site Pure Xbox.

Still, as much as I am piqued by about 1/4 to 1/3 of the million gd "trailers" we were shown, I ain't "fixing" to pre-order anything — especially when they're over a year out.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Super Mario RPG?

Jark

I understand this is hypothetical, but in general we must get in the practice of getting users to provide proof that they've played a game and thus would be qualified to rate it. Steam and the console stores (Microsoft Store on XBL and PSN Store) do this.

Re: 'Blade Chimera' Combines Stunning Pixel Art With Stylish Metroidvania Action

"...cities were suddenly flooded with demons in the form of monsters and spirits that suddenly appeared in the city, sparking an all-out Demon War."

That is unnecessarily redundant. The writing techniques these days are getting free passes from y'all. Mine too - but unlike others I at least give it a once-over (this paragraph's final form was not how I originally phrased it).

Here's a better opening descriptor:

"...cities were suddenly flooded with monstrous and ethereal demons, sparking the all-out Demon War."

(If you name a war, you use 'the,' not 'an," and it's also unnecessary to say 'all-out' for a named war especially since every goddamned overt/proper war is all-out).

Re: Excellent Time-Travelling Metroidvania 'Timespinner' Is Getting A Sequel

Jark

@NotSoCryptic sorry but that is rubbish. The rebel NPCs at the main hub were some of the best handlings of "taboo" topics, perhaps ever. A finely tuned line is walked, with sexuality being overtly expressed without taking over the plotline for no reason (which normie / cishet stuff can tend to do, out of corporate cynicism, btw). There's a good reason and a good outcome for Lunais, herself.

Re: Excellent Time-Travelling Metroidvania 'Timespinner' Is Getting A Sequel

@TotalHenshin No it wasn't too on the nose. They didn't have upside-down castles, for one thing. There are multiple branching endgame locations depending on storyline choices.

They did have weird familiars, some of whom were almost aware of the audience. The familiars were key to unlocking the "best ending" IIRC, which seems to be the one they went with for Timespinners 2 (hint: it's about the Eternal Mother).

Other than that I don't recall a RPG-like gear/equipment system, but you can upgrade and combine attack orbs for different effects. I don't recall SOTN having a combination system with its primary weapons, or having orbs. There are no secret inputs to learn spells/special moves in TS like there was in SOTN, afaik.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Fans Needn't Lose Sleep Over Foamstars, Square Enix's 'Splatoon Rip-Off'

Jark

Squenix doesn't know how to make a multiplayer game anymore — if they ever did.

And Sony is enlisting all the help they can get to break out into the lucrative mp markets to justify the costs of their expanding online presence and services (it makes sense to feature live service and mp games if you're already fronting money for cloud/streaming servers)... so expect a deluge of titles, possibly unrefined, in the next four years or so.

Re: UK Charts: Not Even Street Fighter 6 Can Knock Zelda: TOTK Off Its Throne

Jark

SF6 is a fighting game; those don't generally outperform more accessible, widespread genres and franchises (yes, SF is the king-daddy of FG revenue, but Zelda is the god-emperor of action-adventure love, having practically invented the genre on consoles).

The bigger question is: has Diablo 4 taken the revenue reigns, despite not even fully officially out yet? (Disguised Early Access via premium pre-orders is still early access).
