@FishieFish Sort of, I used to play Japanese games all the time on my PAL megadrive. The region locking was simply a different shaped cart and you had to file the cartridge socket at the edges to make it fit. Not every game worked though for some reason?
@unrandomsam That was one of my first games too!Though the very first game I saw was Kickstart on the speccy48k, and from then on I have been hooked on games like excitebike, trials HD etc.
@Ricube I think Zelda is post apocalyptic. You see references to past long dead civilizations of people with great technology, in skyward sword your sword has an A.I. and it's supposed to be the beginning. I often see Zelda games in the same light as vampire Hunter D where there are small pockets of people clinging to a simpler life forgotten by time, but reborn through necessity.
I have a voracious appetite for content, I now have 11disk games and am about to be on my last screen for downloads. Was looking the other day at how I need to move my games to a different shelf by Christmas, due to at least 3 but maybe 4 purchases before then. This is another game I am interested in and will add to my ever growing need for folders on the Wii u main screen
What Nintendo should focus on is not just linked accounts but being able to play 3DS games bought on the eshop on your wii u. A quick way to add tonnes of excellent games (like the GBA player was) to a console with a smaller library. People would love to play Pokemon on their TV's!
The original RARE is pretty much gone and all they made for Xbox over these last few years is a laggy sports game and a bunch of avatar clothing. If I was in their position, I'd want something to push my status back up.
@andreoni79 yeah, if you touch the gamepad buttons you get a message saying it doesn't work at all in anything. Just think of it as a small TV with built in sensor for your wii
@andreoni79 I tested it with skyward sword this morning while my kids had breakfast. It was easy to use and a welcome feature for those of us who got deluxe packs with stands included. Plus it means I don't need control of the TV to play my Wii VC collection of castlevania games. I just wish they had sped up game launch times as promised, firing up splinter cell still takes the exact same time as loading Jet Set Willy on my zx spectrum 48k
@raith eternal darkness devs are trying to make a sequel via kickstarter which looks pretty sweet. Yeah Nintendo could sweeten the deal for devs who don't traditionally get a great income from Nintendo sales by awarding them a 1st party IP in exchange for Wii u versions of one of their own. Like SEGA with F-Zero and (dare I say it) namco with Star Fox. If nothing else it creates brand awareness around lesser known IP's and keeps the names running while Nintendo can't keep up.
@BATRA wouldn't it! RTS has never done too well on consoles and battalion wars was a good attempt, just imagining what could be possible on Wii u gets me excited! A great series much underrated.
F-Zero Star Fox Metroid Excitebike Excite Truck (my mrs fave) Wave Race 1080 Pilotwings Disaster Day of Crisis Battalion Wars (Would be perfect on the gamepad!) Golden Sun Kid Icarus Mother
All need new console games, I dont care if they're the same idea with different tracks or the only new addition to the series is online multiplayer or HD graphics. These games are good and fun enough as they are they dont need a silly hook. Just to be made sequels that take advantage of the current gen power and the Wii U community.
@Kyloctopus Shigsy May have tried and failed a few times recently but this guy has given up! He's in charge of EA sports and so is responsible for the "no new features" in FIFA on the DS, Wii and Vita this year. Also I don't understand why he seems to make the point that Nintendo is responsible for all gamers becoming gamers in the first place and it has nothing to do with them either? If the whole gaming industry is reliant on one man, then why don't they support him?
I still can't believe the original wii is still outselling the Xbox360 and we never hear about it, just how bad WiiU is selling and it's beating Vita! The 3DS is really kicking some donkey though......look at him go! Really looking forward to playing MH4 it can't get localised quick enough!
@Kifa That's sad as I was the same when it originally released but when I bought it anyway was instantly sucked in by the story and characters. If you get the chance give it a rent or borrow it from a friend as I understand some people will never be swayed into liking the art direction, but hopefully you won't turn down playing through a great adventure all together.
@Peek-a-boo. Hahaha! I don't think any analysis of a system takes into account the price as to whether or not it's a valid comparison. The WiiU has been compared to ps3 and 360 sales since it's release and they're a lot cheaper plus a lot older, I personally don't get your point.
@Peach64 I always thought people compared it to ps3s launch? Which is not only comparable in hardware sales but also better for Wii u in game terms as some people didn't even buy games for their ps3 at launch and just bought the system as a bluray player they might get a game for later. PS3 still got supported through this rough patch by third parties, hopefully Nintendo are doing enough (we don't know about yet) to back up the games they are soon releasing and gain some real momentum.
@Pachterkid I can't understand why so many games crash the system, but I have not yet had a problem with Lego city, the others you mentioned, yeah I have had my fair share of crashes. But it should be mentioned that so far (195 hours of "so far") Monster Hunter has never had one hiccup in my machine and neither has wonderful 101, splinter cell, Injustice or pikmin3. I'm hoping the bad crashes are becoming a thing of the past.
Though I am happy as a pig in Larry that Mega Man X is coming I wish someone would let us know why on earth there are so few VC releases on WiiU and why its only NES and SNES. Even if they could only release Nintendo machines, I wish Ninty would hurry and get on the GBA and DS bandwagon so I can get my Castlevania on! But I would kill for a more robust PCengine catalogue and some classic Sega games (Saturn and Megadrive).
I like Zelda II, but then I like Simons Quest too as its one of the best Castlevania games, with Some of the best music. And although Castlevania II was a departure for the series at the time it was the first metroidvania version in the series.
@Peach64 I saw an interview with one of the free radical (FR) guys who said Ubisoft were to blame for Haze. FR apparently had a totally different game made, UBi said they wouldn't release it as they didn't know who to market it at and forced FR to remake it all in about 8 months. HAZE is a bad game, and that may explain why? It was annoying though, as due to the performance of that game, their Star Wars Battlefront 3 contract went up in smoke and even though the footage of it looks incredible it will never be played .
@rjejr Although I thought that too, I am a bit skeptical it would be as easy to do. Especially as the shapes aren't drawn across the screen but across the in game floor and effected by scenery. It would be too easy to draw a quick shape with the remote and it not be possible. Either that or change the whole mechanic and give remote players an advantage?
@Cohort Has anyone noticed how many French people are online on Wii u?! I remember going to France when I was in my teens and making friends with a bunch of kids of which only one had a console; which was an Atari 2600! Bearing in mind this was the mid nineties and as the videogame market was so bad I got chakan the forever man and rocket knight adventures from a super marche for less than £10. My how things have changed, went over with my kids this summer and checked out the Wii u games (which had big displays in store) just in case they were cheaper, but no, more expensive and yet most of the people playing need for speed or cod on Wii U seem to be French. I love this console it makes me feel more European!
@tchaten adding DVD wouldn't be too much of a cost, the Wii could play them according to homebrew sites. If the licences cost so much then Nintendo should make a DVD channel and charge those that want it to cover the licence fee, its possible as no hard tech needs to be added, just a media player.
I always liked the zero punctuation reviews on escapism, yahtzee hates all games aside from portal and thief! I can imagine him warming to a console like wii u because of its focus, having seen him talk badly about games which try and be everything rather than just getting the fun bit right.
@WiiLovePeace I had to wait this week until I was paid, and it was worth it Wonderful 101 has made me smile every step of the way so far and its pretty bloody hard to boot!
@galetyler I get your point but they have some guys who are responsible for Okami (the closest you can get to Zelda without Zelda) so they don't have to do this kind of action and perhaps could bring something new to metroid. Though I would kill for them to make star fox.
@6ch6ris6 But it was milked to death the first time and the HD remake only had about 5 songs on the playlist for some reason so it got annoying fast. BASS! HOW LOW CAN YOU GO!
Oh and I disagree, indie games can be system sellers, I was trying to decide on if I wanted a Wii U just before launch and the reported change in stance on how indie developers were being treated by Nintendo made me buy on day one. I understand the value of indie devs trying something new and have a 250gb Xxbox HAD with only 3gb of space left to prove it, no retail downloads to be found bar red dead redemption. I am an indie game freak, I love steam for their aggressive pricing and indie focus, so mixing that in with Nintendo first party games and the VC sounded like heaven! I have backed this with my wallet too and have bought every download only game on the eshop. Honestly I never thought I'd be able to say "I've been playing spin the bottle with the kids"..... without getting my house burned down.
It seems like for the first time ever NOE is trying to do right by European consumers, whether that's being more aggressive in its Nintendo directs to make the system look more appealing or with a few recent titles beating American releases to the shops by a week or two. For the first time since I bought a Nintendo system (1987) I feel like they are returning my devotion with what I want most, more games!
All this has done for me is to realise how nice AC's basic art style looks on Wii U especially with lots of animals on screen at one time. I need Animal Crossing Wii U now!
Though it has been debated that this isn't a system seller I was talking to an acquaintance this morning on the train who was waiting until Christmas to buy a Wii u and mentioned that I would be playing pikmin 3 thus weekend, he seemed shocked and asked if it was an eshop game. When I said no it's a full title and somehow got onto the fact that windwaker was out in a couple of months he called in sick at work to go buy one
@antonvaltaz That's fair enough, I am UK based so I accepted it would be a bit more and I wasn't necessarily saying it wasn't a bad thing just wondering why it wasn't addressed earlier. Either way thinking about it, Nintendo announced their pricing for VC games in the Feb Nintendo direct, did it say anywhere about pricing titles on a game by game basis? If not I'm sure a few people would have grounds to complain
Back when they were released I paid £65 for SNES SF2 and virtua racing on the megadrive, to me this with the guide is a bit of a deal.
Nintendo have done this before with VC games on the Wii, I remember a little blue and yellow icon next to some which were a different price. I think perhaps sin and punishment was one or maybe rondo of blood? It's been a while since they first did it so why are we only questioning it now?
Wow this game is looking brilliant especially Bingo! That's why its selling so well in Japan. I once read an article in edge or games tm magazine about a guy who went to see some videogame composer in concert and the whole gig stopped for a 3 hour bingo break in the middle. Apparently that's quite normal.
@Krzysztof I keep dreaming that would happen, one missing from the list though, SEGA haven't had the best of rides over the last few years a couple of poorly received AAA ps4 and XBone games and they might find themselves on the bankruptcy end of a bidding war. If Nintendo could buy all major Japanese dev's it would be the best console in the world, one with a unified goal like back in the NES days
I was wondering when the rumours around this would begin. I for one would love Nintendo to pull it off, though the article says Sony could outbid Nintendo and I wouldn't have guessed that likely? Last years financial results put Sony in a very precarious position financially (mainly due to the shift in the music industry and their bad performance in the phone making business). They're about to release a new console and advertise the hell out of the earth, I'd bet they have enough money tied up in games they're not going to take a risk on a bankrupt companies assets.
The claws seems to only be on two fingers like each hand has a snake bite. At least they're rolling with the character a bit more than a boring dude who never did anything.
@World I have the exact same opinion about the midi I was hoping it would be released with orchestral recordings of the sound track just they haven't announced it yet. That being said I was really hoping new dungeons, wind control etc were going to be in but as it's one of my favourite Zelda games up there with link to the past so as I no longer own a Wii or GameCube it's going to be nice to have it in my collection. Reserving judgement on all enhancements they are making to this version at the min, especially as the main article missed a small one and as a whole the game may be better for all these little tweaks Nintendo are making
@datamonkey I haven't tried the 3DS version I was put off with the use of the Wii Sports resort style island and the mii characters, Pilotwings on the NES was awesome as you got these increasingly hard areas to get used to then given a desert strike themed helicopter stage to rescue instructors every 4 levels, it made it interesting and fresh all the way through and the N64 version was just bonkers chasing robots around with your gyrocopter!
