I wish the article has emphasized that this poll is what we think the best Zelda game is, not what our favorite Zelda game is. I think that A Link to the Past is the best Zelda game (though to be fair, Windwaker HD wasn't far behind it), and thus it gets my vote. However, my favorite Zelda game is actually Ocarina of Time, followed by the original Legend of Zelda.
Oh geez, I wish I had remembered this game for the difficult NES games thread. I remember this game being brutal and one of the few I never managed to beat back when I was younger.
I'm not sure how much of this was playing for the camera. My niece is 8, and she has both an iPad and a DS. I can't imagine her having most of these reactions to the old Gameboy.
I plan to grab Samus, Zelda, and Link. I may consider Peach if they give us a version from the Super Mario comic series. As I grab more, I plan to have them slow phases out the Krosmaster figurine collection I currently have decorating my TV stand.
A combination is best. I love Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc as much as the next person, but Nintendo can't survive just by spamming those titles alone every year. New IPs bring some much needed new life to the console.
@andreoni79 To be fair, the DLC doesn't fit any worse than the sports coupe that you can unlock normally. Though I generally don't use the coupe either for the same reason.
Advertising and product placement have already infected just about everything. I'd rather not have it do the same to my game. So no, I won't be downloading the DLC. Even though it's free. Even if they were to pay me.
While I agree that it would have been amazing, it's unfortunately not feasible either monetarily (most sources still say that Nintendo is paying ~$100 per gamepad, and the vast majority of people aren't going to fork over ~$300 for additional controllers) or in terms of hardware capability - the Wii U's GPU has to render the gamepad video separately . In order to be able to render five separate video streams simultaneously, the Wii U would need to be at minimum 3x more powerful than it currently is.
@earthboundlink You're not going to see Skyward Sword style controls again. The new game will confirm to the current Wii U controller, not the last generation controller.
While I liked the control of Skyward Sword, even the MotionPlus wasn't enough of an improvement to make it work as well as it could have.
I can't say I disagree with Miyamoto on the VR issue. I know that for myself, personally, I'm super excited about Occulus and Sony's version. However, like Miyamoto I'm not sure the widespread appeal is really there to make is a ubiquitous feature in the gaming world.
Maybe I'm misinterpreting what you're trying to convey, but how is Nintendo supposed to fix their major issue (severe lack of 3rd party support) with a convention that's designed simply to build hype for upcoming games? It's not like they can somehow build help build support for something that isn't there. The only thing that's really going to fix the 3rd party support is pushing more console units, which MK8 and SSB seems to be addressing currently (as well as the plethora of other interesting games like Zelda, Splatoon, etc).
Do I think that Splatoon will be anywhere near as popular as Smash in the long run, or even that it will even be a franchise? Possibly, possibly not. But I'm simply trying to ponder what the poll results mean. Everything you've said in the previous two posts is merely your own projected personal conjecture.
However, even for an informal poll like this, the fact that a previously unknown title beat, by a significant margin, the main title of the show (a massive amount of Nintendo's E3 coverage revolved entirely around Smash - the amiibos, the character reveals, the Smash invitational, etc) is a really telling thing to me.
@2Sang Splatoon was my favorite game shown, so I was super happy with the coverage it received. Given that Splatoon currently has double the votes that Smash Bros does in the poll, I highly doubt I'm alone in that stance...
@Kirk (#182) Given that in the poll Splatoon was second only to Zelda, and beat out even Smash Bros by a landslide, methinks your opinion is in the minority.
I don't ever use the Off-TV functionality myself, but I still really like the gamepad. All else aside, it's a really comfortable controller, which is quite an accomplishment since I find most large controllers to be a bit much for people like myself with small to medium sized hands.
The vast majority of the time I use the gamepad, even though I have a pro controller - the pro controller really only gets used when I have other people with me playing local multiplayer.
Wow, the editor's picks for this list are really bad, to the point where I wonder how many of these games they've actually played. NES Remix being #1 in particular is rather horrifying.
Child of Light at the very least should have been #1 on the list. Scram Kitty, Giana Sisters, Little Inferno, and Stick It to the Man should have rounded out the rest of the top five.
(Note: I didn't include Ittle Dew or 1001 Spike as imagine they were likely released after this list was put together.)
My vote went to Wonderful101 (I wish ZombiU had been on the list), though SMBU was a very close second. As for MK8...it's lots of fun, but massively overrated.
I imagine that it's for the same reason we played with dolls when we were little - simulating reality and being able to tweak it to our desires is fun.
@sinalefa Ahh, that makes much more sense than what I was thinking. Variable acceleration is definitely something to be desired.
I have three of these controllers, but sadly the left shoulder button on my Wave has been messed up for ages...I may have to finally attempt to fix it.
@Geonjaha You don't have support everything someone does to support one facet or stance. This sort of all or nothing approach is why the US government is so stupidly polarized and more akin to rooting for football teams than reasoned discourse. That we see the same thing in something as innocuous as video games is incredibly disheartening.
I agree fully. I've never really gotten the stance that Youtubers should be able to make money from streaming a product created from somebody else. It's non-nonsensical.
And before somebody comes in and counters with "But it's their commentary/additions that people come to watch, not just the game!" keep in mind that that is exactly why people watch Zero Punctuation's reviews, and he does it without so much as a screenshot. If you're really that entertaining, you can do it on your own merits (like Yahtzee, though some may disagree).
What's this, a positive article about Nintendo? This simply won't do. Quick, we call Gamespot and have them post another doom and gloom article, stat! Before this toot toot gains momentum.
I don't want to see DLC unless it's done New Super Luigi U style. AKA, large updates that add a lot rather than small bundles that nickel and dime you to death.
@Kirk
Given how much they tout off-screen play, if it was even remotely feasible they would added it. The Wii U simply isn't powerful enough to render both streams and keep a consistent frame rate, most likely.

Definitely the Zelda U feature, but Splatoon was a huge surprise, and definitely nailed second place.
Finding out that we would get Bayonetta 1 for free alongside the sequel was also pretty amazing.
