The Wii U was touted as a multi-media device, when? Also, way to miss the entire point by singling out the fact that Nintendo have "finally" gone HD. As if that's what the Wii U is really going to be about...
@JesusSaves: ...Are you serious? I honestly can't believe how many complaints I've seen about GC functionality not being offered anymore since the Wii U's announcement. This is on a different level, though. If you still want GC functionality that bad, keep your Wii or pick up a GameCube. Eventually the line must be drawn, you know...
People are already complaining/fearing that the price of the Wii U will be too high, so adding DVD and/or blu-ray playback would only serve to jack up the cost some more. Besides, it is 2012 (its release date), meaning virtually every home should have some kind of means by which to view DVDs; the Wii U (and the Wii, for that matter) doesn't need that feature. I, for one, am perfectly satisfied with Nintendo sticking to what they know best: making game consoles...
@timp29: "The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."
So, yeah, adding DVD/blu-ray playback capabilities costs money...
@warioswoods: Likewise. I recently did a 100% play-through of Ocarina on my N64 cart, so I doubt I could be bothered to play through the regular game again in order to unlock Master Quest...
That Wii compilation sounds interesting. Depending on the price, I might add it to my list. I want to see what all the fuss is about with this series...
I've still yet to play the original, but this game sounds phenomenal. Yet another reason for me to purchase a 3DS soon (though still not the clincher)...
@Corbs: "It's been an incredibly long wait for a new Luigi's Mansion release, but after putting a few turns into the upcoming 3DS release, it's clear that the wait was well worth it."
Only a few? Don't be so modest, Corbs. I bet they had to wrestle that 3DS away from you...
Man, this game sounds fantastic. Now all Nintendo needs to do to really get me to move on buying a 3DS is announce a Metroid title...
@Corbs: "The simple look and gameplay objectives bring back memories of the 64-bit adventure, but he game doesn't stop there." You missed a 't' there (second paragraph). Also, great impressions...
After playing MGS 2 last year, I became interested in the series, so this is definitely one game I'll be picking up once I own a 3DS. Prepare for some nice, dark green camouflage, Snake...
As long as they bring back some of the challenge of the previous games in the series (MP 8 was way too easy), I'll definitely be picking it up. Seriously, there's really no need to win any coins (except to buy cheat candy) when Toad just gives you the stars and the AI relies on cheating to make sure you don't amass too many of them. With that said, the game does look good; I wonder if Hudson is going to be developing it...
Personally, I think the controller looks phenomenal and can't wait to see what new play-styles Nintendo creates with it...
@Skotski: Speaking of Pip-Boys, if Bethesda doesn't bring Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas (GOTY editions) to the Wii U, they'll really be missing out on a golden opportunity. As long as the games launched bug-free, I wager they'd become the definitive console versions, with Pip-Boy navigation being much more fluid and akin to playing the games on a PC...
Playing as yourself in a platformer? And a Mario platformer, at that? Who can honestly say they've never thought of/wanted to do this? I'm going to be all over this when it releases...
This won't turn out to be just a mere tech demo, not unless Nintendo wants to miss out on some mega-bucks...
Also, a cool feature that Nintendo should implement is full customization: first off, have the Miis wear caps; secondly, let people pick the colors of their Mii's outfit (overalls, shirt and cap); and lastly, make it so people can personalize the initial on the caps to match their own. My Mii decked out in black overalls and a green shirt and cap with the letter 'F' emblazoned on it would be too awesome for words...
Personally, I'm way more intrigued by how Nintendo's going to change the way I play games with their new controller (as I was with the Wii), than by its HD output. Nintendo already made fantastic-looking games on the Wii, so all this really does is take away third-party developers' excuses for leaving Nintendo out when it comes to ports. Of course—as all you cynics are already speculating—they'll probably change their tune and abandon ship once the competition announces their new, more powerful consoles...
From what I gleaned from the press release, I am concerned by the fact that it sounds like the Wii U will only support one of its new controllers at a time, though. Hopefully this will be further elaborated upon once a bit more time passes. Literal split-screen multi-player would really make some genres—the FPS genre in particular—shine on the Wii U, so it'd be a shame if this was hampered by the fact that you could only use one touch-screen controller at a time...
Nice to see third-parties jumping on the bandwagon now that HD is on the table. Hopefully Bethesda will toss their hat into the ring with ports of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas...
@James: "Through an on-stage video we already know about several third-party games on the way to Nitnendo's new home console:" In your excitement, it looks like you made a tiny slip-up...
New Smash Bros., you say? Awesome. I wonder what look Samus will sport in this one, Prime Trilogy or Other M... perhaps both will be offered? That would be swell...
@TrevorTheChan: "In celebrating the game's 20th anniversary, what better time thenthan now?" Minor slip-up there...
I've only tried the original Mega Man and found it quite frustrating. Then again, I wasn't playing with a d-pad, so that made the more precise jumps that I needed to make damn near impossible...
The only good Driver game that I've played was the original on the ps1. I'll echo what others have already said—teaming up with Capcom for bundles would be a much smarter move...
I addition to being flat broke, I'd go with 1, 5 and 6 for reasons I don't own a 3DS yet. A Metroid title being announced would be all the motivation I'd need to secure the funds for one...
