Re: Random: Shigeru Miyamoto Did Exactly What We Did When Playtesting Donkey Kong Bananza

Colonel1000

So far I'm enjoying it a lot, and I was playing Mario Odyssey quite a bit in the run up (and that game still plays and looks amazing- especially on Switch 2!).

Wasn't sure quite what to expect going into it, but it's got that real old school video game vibe where it's just fun playing! Exceeding expectations. Way more than MKW, and this probably should have been the launch game.

Re: Donkey Kong Bananza Director Acknowledges Performance Drops: "We Prioritized Fun And Playability"

Colonel1000

Well, to echo the sentiments (mainly)! It won't be a deal breaker if it's barely noticeable, but the concern us that if Nintendo's 2nd next gen game is struggling then this is more than a little worrying for the Switch 2 generation. And this is Nintendo's fault.

I like the Switch 2, but so far it's only felt like a machine that can play Switch 1 games properly. The last Nintendo console where it felt like 'okay, well what can it do?' was the Wii U. And I'm not saying it will be another Wii U because it won't, but I held off getting the Wii U at launch because of that feeling. And this was the first Nintendo I never got at launch.

Now, to reiterate I think the Switch 2 is a pretty good piece of kit, and it improves on the Switch 1 in nearly every way but it is not without issues; namely lack of OLED display (which when I look over at the Switch OLED I can't help thinking I wish it had one - and how long until the Switch 2 OLED!) But Nintendo has pretty much been marketing it a 'look how powerful this thing is!' And with a press release like this it does dispel that this is really not the case.

The Switch 2 is not cheap, and granted all costs have gone up since Switch 1 but it's still a big price tag to ask. The Switch 1 could get away with being underpowered as the concept was so fresh that the industry needed it; but the Switch 1 was chugging away for 8 years and whilst there are some great games in it's first half of life (and they're still pretty great now) towards the end it was feeling pretty aged. And consumers will be aware of this, and it won't get the same pass as the Switch 1 did. The Switch 2 doesn't feel like I'm really playing the next generation of Nintendo yet.

Also, MKW is pretty underwhelming compared to 8 Deluxe!

Re: It's Official, Switch 2 Has Sold Over 3.5 Million Units Globally In Its First Four Days

Colonel1000

My thoughts, if anyone cares (or reads this far)! The main complaints seem to around pricing, and the power of the system. Dealing with pricing, all gaming is expensive and this is largely to do with inflation. The Switch 1 launched in the UK at £280 in 2017 and if that is adjusted for 2025 it would be around £385. So that means the Switch 2 is almost identical to Switch 1 price at launch. The PS5 cost £449 at launch! Game prices have gone up but unfortunately so have developer costs; one can blame Nintendo for being greedy, but that standard would also have to be applied to every other company. On the whole, gamers consume more of this media now than at any other point in history. When I was growing up games were really expensive, and you would buy 1 or 2 games a year!

People being upset by the power of the Switch 2 is bizarre, but comes down to a tribalistic mentality. So far it would appear that Switch 2 can run current gen games and run them quite well. And this really bothers a lot of people. If you have to justify your own purchase by the metric of how much 'better' it is than someone else's, then I'm afraid you are the one with the problem.

Now onto the actual system! This feels like the first time that Nintendo has done something quite different with a new mainline hardware launch and that is that they have gone totally iterative with their new console. What I mean by this is that it does not feel entirely like the 'next' Nintendo. Usually, with each new system there was a sense of moving on from the previous generation, which is not present here at all (possibly because I'm replaying BotW!!). Nintendo has always done revisions within a generation (e.g. ds, ds lite, dsi), but never between generations. And I think that feeling comes from no real change to the UI. This makes me think that Nintendo is placing the Switch 2 along side the Switch 1 for the time being, and time will tell how that works out for them. I think this really comes down to a testament of how good the Switch 1 actually is. My concern around this though, is that should this have come to market a couple of years earlier which would have bridged the gap in generational cycles.

Finally, we've not really seen what Nintendo is planning on doing this generation. MKW is good but so far it has not been the massive leap forward I was expecting. This may be because I have not spent enough time in it yet (damn BotW, why did that game have to be so good!), or because it followed the pinnacle of MK. The Switch 1 had BotW and I don't think it can be overstated how great that game is (and yes it is better than TotK!).

In conclusion then; will the Switch 2 be successful? Yes. Will it shift Switch 1 numbers? Probably not. It has already become the fastest selling console of all time, and I think that is of the back of a 'soft' launch! Nintendo hasn't yet revealed what it has up its sleeve when it comes to the Switch 2 (or maybe it has!😄).

If anyone does read this, then I really appreciate you getting this far!❤️

Re: Hardware Review (In Progress): Nintendo Switch 2 - A Faster, Slicker, Sexier Switch

Colonel1000

Overall it's a pretty slick bit of kit and seems pretty powerful. I would like to have seem some update to UI in some way just to set it apart from the Switch 1 - didn't have to be fancy just different. I kind of get the feeling I playing a 'better' Switch rather than some truly new (it feels then that if it doesn't play the heavy hitting games really well then there's not a much point to it if that makes sense. To put it another way the only real innovation is more power). The other thing that Nintendo must fix is a Switch 2 only section in the eshop- this is a must as I want to be able to get away from all the junk at least for a little while!

Re: Video: Do You Even Need A Pro Controller For The Switch 2?

Colonel1000

Will pick one up at some point, but will probably pick up additional N64 controllers first (just got 2 for virtual console and they are essential for the N64). I've gone for additional joycon 2 as will still be playing overcooked and Mario party! Also, thought the money was better spent getting my allowance of Gamecube controllers! 🤣

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Busier Hyrule Is Making Me Miss BOTW

Colonel1000

It's a true sequel to possibly the greatest game every made.

I tried starting BotW from the beginning (not recently), but after spending so long with the game (350+ hours which is probably not a lot by some standards but probably 5x more than any other single player game - Vice City excluded!), but I had no real impetus to do so.

TotK feels like a remix, but fresh and full of surprises, which is incredible really when you consider it's the same basic Hyrule. The Depths in particular have really captivated me, more so than the surface, as there is a great sense of discovery and unknown.

Nintendo has really made this for the typical BotW player; and the typical BotW player will have sunk 100s of hours into that game. So it has to be mixed up quite a bit; coming face to face with a Gleeok with only half a dozen hearts now seems like fair game, but that is only because of my experience with BotW.

For me it has allowed me to start (figuratively) BotW again. I'm happy to grind again as the experience is fresh!

(I still miss the traditional linear Zelda game though, and would love to see another offering in some way shape or form. I don't think either BotW or TotK are the strongest narratively, and I think it is a shame for anyone not to have experienced Ocarina of Time!)

Re: Video: Here's Your First Look At The Shadow Man Remaster From Nightdive Studios

Colonel1000

Like most of the comments, it looks fairly underwhelming as remaster, and it looks like it still has the same horrible controls.

I remember the UK N64 magazine running quite a big article about it at the time, saying how impressively big it was and it was (at the time). It was quite enjoyable when you got into it, I must have sunk about 60hrs into then my cheap 3rd party memory card corrupted! Too much like hard work to start from the beginning.

May still pick it up but it'll have to impress a bit more than this.

Re: UK Pricing For Nintendo Labo Is Confirmed

Colonel1000

Is anyone else worried that this is very gimmicky this early on in the Switch life cycle? At the moment the Switch is riding high on essentially a 'cool' factor as a games machine with a very usp: console gaming on the go. This line of marketing is I think where the Wii fell down, with a move away from core gaming and the reason the Switch is proving to be so successful. The marketing of the Switch so far has been aimed at adults, whereas this (and although not directly shown) is aimed solely at the kids audience. Also no parent is going to buy a Switch solely so their child can play with this, then it becomes a £350 piece of cardboard! It is worrying that this may become the angle they start promoting, because if this is the case then it is the end of it being taken as a serious console.

Re: L.A. Noire

Colonel1000

Still waiting on this review! I see the score's up now. I had this on 360 the first time around and struggled to get into, and what the comments above are saying I would have agreed with back then. The trouble is when you play this initially it feels so much GTA IV/V but far more rigid, and as a result far less fun! But it is not meant to be like that and the clue is in the title! What they've gone for here is a detective game; think a cross between GTA and the Phoenix Wright games. It's not perfect, the interview sections could have borrowed some more from PW where in those games you couldn't advance until you collect all the relevant evidence; it's not always obvious how to approach an interview and if you even have the right evidence to do so. This I hope will become more apparent as the game goes on. But after all that l am enjoying playing it Switch and this is largely due to the console itself as it makes it so much easier to get into games like this. I was very much looking forward to it when it was announced as I thought it would be well suited to the Switch and it is. It looks very good on system, and is a noticeable improvement on original release. It's still amazing to be able to play games like this anywhere. It is a slower paced game but definitely worth picking up for anyone wanting to pick up a really solid detective game, especially seeing how it can be got for around £36 now. Fills the Switch game library nicely. 8.5/10.

Re: Anniversary: It's One Year Since Nintendo Showed Us The Switch

Colonel1000

What a turnaround in fortunes it has been for Nintendo in the last 12 months, and not to forget the Switch has been on the market less than a year still. But who can honestly say that they are suprised Nintendo has managed to knock it out of the park when we know this is what they are capable of doing!

I do think that the failure of the Wii U has been to the benefit of the Switch, because they may have rested on their laurels after the success of the Wii. Either that or they knew that the Wii U was always going to be failure, as the Switch is the concept that the Wii U was meant to be but restrictions didn't allow the realisation of it at the time!

Re: Nintendo Fixes the Left Joy-Con Problem with a Small Piece of Foam

Colonel1000

This is a really easy diy fix if you have the screwdrivers. £2 for the foam from Maplin. No need to worry about voiding warranty if done carefully, just take the foam out if you have to send to Nintendo. Joycon come apart easily, just open from non-docking side. Had real issues with mine but now works perfectly! Would normally go back to manufacturer but didn't want to be without zelda for a few days!

Re: Review: 1-2-Switch (Switch)

Colonel1000

@ironside1911 Couldn't agree more really, not sure the point of this 'game'. It arrived yesterday and today I've already traded it in! Glade I didn't pay full retail or go digital. Wanted to try it from all the videos and talk about but found it, on the whole, very underwhelming and not much fun to play. And I've had fun with past games like Nintendoland, Warioware, Wii Party (U), and even Wii Music! I'm glad its not a pack in title as its embarrassing next to Wii Sports. This is not a good showcase of the Switch, and I'm not sure who its really targeted to. If you want to play video games without the video part, then are you really going to spend over £300 to do so? If thats what you're after there are plenty of cheaper and more fun board games out there!

Re: ARM Confirms That The Nintendo Switch's Chipset Is Very Close To Tegra X1 Spec

Colonel1000

https://youtu.be/Wq5E2Z2hww0

This guy's channel is so much better for a rational discussion!

Yes third party support is important to keep a supply of games coming, but technical prowess of a machine is now less of a factor than is economics and business relationships. If the Switch sells there will be developers. Graphical fidelity is plateauing. In all previous generations games that came out 4 years in to a consoles life span look significantly better than those at launch. Now not so much so. This is why Microsoft and Sony are releasing/released new consoles as there is nowhere else to go. Isn't this PC gaming?

Nintendo have made an exciting console, that will have some amazing games on it. Will it get all the games? No. But name me a console that has? All people have to decide is whether the content enough to convince themselves to get one?

It is going to be amazing though! Tabletop mode: mini sessions of bomberman and street fight 2! Honestly, what more do people want!!

Re: Tatsumi Kimishima Responds to Criticism Over the Switch Launch Line-Up

Colonel1000

It's hard to know what people want from Nintendo. The Wii U launched with something like 38 games! And look how that turned out. Even if those were the only games (and Zelda) coming out this year that's an amazing line-up and reason enough to get the system (fair enough if you want to wait till Mario). Just 30 days to go! Whoop whoop!

Re: Nintendo Will Replace Your Dead Switch Battery, At A Cost

Colonel1000

I put this on another post as well but it seems Argos are still taking pre-orders for delivery on the 3rd when in actual fact their quota is fulfilled and subsequent order are becoming back orders. I found this out in time to secure a neon unit elsewhere but would have been very annoyed otherwise!

Re: Video: New Nintendo Switch Advert Shows Off Its Number Two Feature

Colonel1000

Off topic, but argos are taking pre-orders still for the 3rd and they are actually going straight to back order! I order neon at the beginning of the week thinking 'great, secured for release' but when text alerts came through confirming the games and not the console got suspicious! Anyway if anyone sees this just be aware!

Re: Guide: Everything We Now Know About the Nintendo Switch

Colonel1000

I hope the docking systems does more than just connect to the TV! I expect that when it is in it you get the full power of the system; removing the screen/portable component you get a scaled down system. I think it's telling that NVIDIA are talking about scalability. Also I expect to see at least a full blown version and a stand alone portable option comprising just the game pad. This would be the obvious way to appeal to both their home console and portable markets.

Re: Gallery: Let's Take a Look at the Nintendo Switch

Colonel1000

I never comment about Nintendo, but wow this looks truly awesome! The thing to remember here is that they are not just replacing win u but the 3ds as well, and if it is as functional as it is stylish the big N will have done an amazing job! Never, ever count Nintendo out! I expect to see at least a full home version and just a portable SKU. But truly, well done Nintendo! NB. The 4 sitting around playing the 'portable' component, at first glance it does look like they are playing Atari Lynxs!! Super-charged Atari Lynxs!!
