The main reason i still have a ps2 is for The Raiden Project and Raiden Project DX. Would love to see the Raiden Fighters Aces collection on switch too!
This is a great game ignore the reviewer. Yes the shame break is silly and unnecessary but it's hardly offensive and you see a lot worse in a 15 rated film. 8/10 easily, you can probably pick it up cheaper on steam/xbox/ps3 but you couldn't play it on the go.
Played this for 2 hours straight on the flight home from my hols last week - managed to get all the way to the 3rd boss! Great game but tough as nails! For serious shmup fans only I think. And keep clear of wireless pads for shooters btw, the input lag is horrible, even the wired hori pad sucks. Joycons attached in handheld mode (obvs) is the best, or shell out for the hori arcade stick. Woops went off on a bit of a tangent there sorry.....
Not keen on paying a sub to play games, I'll not do it. I like a box with art work to sit on my shelf. I want to own the game and hold a thing of value in my hands, a thing that I can sell on if need be. Bollocks to cloud gaming and subscription content, and mostly bollocks to EA and their microtransactions bullsh$t. Rant over
It's not that I cant comprehend it, only that for a rerelease of an older game I'd expect price to be mentioned in the review. A brand new release - price wouldn't be mentioned, cos it's a new game and I wouldn't expect it to be anything other than priced as usual. Again, Diablo 3 is going to be £50, it really should be mentioned in the review....'guys this is a AAA title no questions, but Bilzzard are taking the piss outta you if you've already got this game. I'd seriously ask yourself whether portable play is worth £50. If you're a new player and don't already own this, then it's a gem, buy it.' Can still give it the obvious 9 out of 10, but that caveat should be included.
@Medic_alert absolutely, I've got loads of games I've bought and not even taken the wrapper off - cos I could afford to buy them and just wait till I have time to play, but I'm still not going to let Blizzard take the piss outta me. Like I've said earlier, I guess what goes into a review score is the subject of much debate and my opening comment was that I was surprised price 'wasn't mentioned' whether that affects the score or whether the reviewer just mentions it, i think it's noteworthy.
@Medic_alert having said that, all the ACA stuff, indie games and those awesome psikyo games by Zerodiv all release at under a tenner and so they should - some of these games are ancient! Goes to show that not all companies are hiking the prices. I do take your point about price being a fluctuating thing, and I don't really have an answer, only that many people find price relevant judging by the comments on this thread alone.
I guess what a review actually considers in a review and crucially how it weighs those considerations are a thing of many a debate. Save to say I believe price to be important, especially for older games, and since Switch seems to be the go to machine for companies to dump their old games then I'd certainly expect price to be mentioned, if not actually affecting the score. I wonder if the reviewer or someone at NL care to provide an answer to any of this?
@PanurgeJr i think price point is - or should be an important factor in a review, especially of an old game that is available a lot cheaper on other systems. I'm going to pay 50 quid for BOTW but I'm not going to triple dip 50 quid for 8 year old Diablo 3, however I might drop 20 quid on it for example . Price is very much part of a review, a few people have said as much in the comments....
Got the Saturn Thunderforce collections and must say that these look better played on an old tv with a scart connection. On my big 4k tv this just looks messy, altho the filters do help.
Having grew up on the original Fallout and Baldur's Gate I think I'll love this so I'm giving it a shot. Dunno how it passed me by on pc! Let's hope they can get Xcom working on Switch too
Still playing Octopath Traveller, also been spending some time on Into the Breach. Btw to the older guy buying games and not playing them - I feel your pain! Only way round it I've found is to only buy one game at a time and until it's complete don't buy anything else major! Ofc I stick to this rule ALL the time lol
I like scores and would probably find another site to read my Switch reviews on if they were ditched. That said, I usually bother to read the content as well as look at the score, however I always read the conclusion!
The Amiga was Team 17's heyday. Project X was my favourite but Stardust was a close second! Would love to see them re release some of their classics on Switch perhaps with original graphics intact!
Maybe it's stating the bleeding obvious but this is only a must buy for jrpg fans. For me it leaves me wanting to play the legend of zelda. Bloody jrpgs and their stupid random encounters combat system spoils a lovely game for me. Give me real time combat or even Baldur's Gate (remember that?) style d&d combat!
@NewAdvent yeah i got stung with fifa 2018, bought it january only for it to go on sale in feb. Contacted nintendo customer services who literally said "unlucky".
@oorwullie great idea mate, count me in. I've double dipped on almost every shmup for Switch so far - own them on Saturn Dreamcast playstation etc. already. Now if only they'd release Raiden Project/DX and I might actually get close to winning one time!
I can confirm the zg2- update for the UK. it allows you to half configure your controller altho annoyingly does not allow use of the shoulder buttons which is a sin. Also vibrate is now all or nothing, and invisible bonus pick ups seems a lot better. They've still not fixed the sodding bonus pick up movement and the boss difficulty hasn't been touched. Still not a bad game guys but I'd recommend shoot em up purists go find the DC version and an HD cable to see Zero Gunner in all it's glory.
@shiryu yeah someone said it went live today? Looking forward to it. Tbf they've done a cracking job with the high res gfx altho the screen filter mode is awful - my dc hooked up with just a SCART doesn't look that bad!
@Shiryu. Well your chopper bashes into stuff on the ground which didn't happen in the orig, lots of pick ups completely disappear but can still be collected if you guess where they're going to drift/ allow them to get sucked into you. The way the pick ups get sucked towards you is wrong and takes a thing away that used to be massive fun - bonus herding. You stop shooting but crucially you can still move or turn and the pick ups should follow you - a small but significant problem. The difficulty is way off for bosses- you've all played Gunbird's train boss right? All ZG2's bosses should be this tough but even in arcade mode they take 30 secs to down. There is more but that's off the top of my head. If I had time I'd do a video of the DC version but I'm at work atm.
Samurai aces was brought out in a double pack for ps2 altho I've forgotten the other game. It's one that plays much like Gunbird and is ideed a vertical scroller. Sengoku blade was a horizontal shooter and was much better imho. I do hope they fix the awful port of Zero Gunner 2 first!
So finally had time to play this. Jeez, I can only assume the reviewer has never played this on DC. This game is a mess. I'm saddened like an unwanted kitten at Christmas.
Don't think a boss's energy going down too quickly is widescreen optimization. But I guess the animation issues could be. Altho I've read that Zerodiv had to code from scratch parts of the game due to no access to sourcecode. Let's hope that you're right however.
